Dear Treasure Island Community Member:
We developed this Treasure Island Family Resource Guide in response to comments and feedback we received from community members when we were doing the TI Children & Youth Needs Assessment and Services Plan earlier this year (2016). Basically, there was a lack of information on what was available to support families and children and youth on Treasure Island. This Resource Guide is our first attempt at trying to provide information that is located all in one document.
As a first effort, there will undoubtedly be information that may be missing. One of these is prepared food and restaurants available on the island. There are changes afoot in this area so we are going to wait to include that as a separate handout that can be inserted in this guide once more specifics are in place.
We welcome any helpful suggestions on information that may need updating and/or would have been good to include. Again, this is our first issue and we can improve upon it over time. If you have suggestions, please kindly submit them to Minnette Simmons at [email protected].

You must live on the Island in order to receive services free of charge. Youth under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years of age to enter the facility, with the exception of the afterschool program. Registration for most services is required online.

Additional Program Information
The YMCA on Treasure Island is generally the gathering place for island youth, with activities to satisfy all curiosities. They offer a full variety of services to keep
participants engaged. Wellness Program:
The YMCA offers recreational activities on a daily basis to accomplish ones fitness goals. There are wellness appointments available to help guests achieve any fitness goals they may have. The YMCA is fully equipped gym with three full-size basketball court, weight room and cardio machines. The YMCA prides itself on promoting ways to live a healthier lifestyle. Wellness staff creates monthly challenges to encourage guests to be physically active. YMCA also offers the Y600 challenge and all guests who successfully complete challenge will receive a FREE YMCA T-shirt. Their wellness program is offered at no cost to all residents on the island.

Additional Program Information
The Treasure Island Sailing Center's (TISC) Junior Sailing Program is designed to enable young sailors to move and learn at their own pace as they progress from novice to advanced sailors in a variety of one-design sail boats. They offer a wide range of Summer, Fall, and Spring class options. TISC's progressive curriculum is designed to give all of our sailors a developmentally appropriate understanding of sailing fundamentals, water safety, knot tying, nautical terminology, boat handling, and race theory. In addition to teaching students to sail confidently and independently, TISC's Junior Sailing Program encourages the development of teamwork, respect, leadership and communication. Our Junior Sailing classes are taught by certified instructors and professional coaches who use a blend of on-shore and on-the-water activities to create an environment that is safe, educational and fun! 4. San Francisco Youth Baseball League

Process to Obtain Services
To qualify to play in the San Francisco Youth Baseball League, your child must either reside in or attend school within the city of San Francisco. Register at sfybl.com, under the registration tab.
Options for Financial Assistance (if any): $88 per child, which includes their uniform Scholarships are available and should be discussed with the team coach.
Additional Program Information
The San Francisco Youth Baseball League (SFYBL) is one of the most widely recognized youth programs in in San Francisco. The SFYBL works in conjunction with the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department and SF FLAME (San Francisco Fire Dept. youth athletics program). The SFYBL is run by a board of partner and volunteer commissioners.
SFYBL is team based. There is no draft where your child is assigned to a different team each season.
Registration for SFYBL opens on November 12th and a close date is yet to be determined. Registration is team-based as well as individual. The SFYBL Opening Day Ceremony will be held in February. The season will begin shortly thereafter and end around late May/early June.

What is Gaelic Football?
Gaelic Football can be described as a mixture of soccer and rugby, although it predates both of those games. It is a field game which has developed as a distinct game similar to the progression of Australian Rules. The Gaelic Athletic Association is the governing body of the Gaelic Games of Hurling and Gaelic Football. It also governs such games as Rounders and Handball. It is a totally amateur, non-profit, community-based organization whose remit includes the promotion of Irish culture as expressed through sport, poetry, song, dance, and music.

Additional Information
Rugby is a fun group centered activity, with graduated levels of play. The onset of play begins with non-contact play for participants who are 5-8 years old. After a player turns 9 years old, they are promoted to the group that engages in contact play. The goal of the San Francisco Golden Gate Youth Rugby Club is dedicated to building character, friendships and community through the interest in the game of Rugby.
We are affiliated with the San Francisco Golden Gate Rugby Club (SFGG). We are members of the Northern California Youth Rugby Association (NCYRA) and USA Rugby.

Additional Information
Catholic Charities runs the island’s only Child Development Center. The facility provides licensed childcare services in addition to. The center offers full-time childcare for infants, toddlers and preschoolers, ranging in ages from 3 months to 5 years old, on Treasure Island.
The Child Development Center offers accredited educational programs with play-based learning and unique opportunities in expressive arts and natural sciences. Children enjoy a well-rounded, stimulating experience that prepares them for engaged learning from elementary school to beyond. In addition to clean and bright classrooms, with all sorts of play materials, the Center features a vivid budding community garden tended to by the little hands that attend the center.

The Life Learning Academy is a non-traditional school, which is an alternative to a traditional high school setting. They are committed to a nonviolent community for students who have not been successful in traditional school settings. LLA welcomes students into an ‘extended family’ which motivates everyone to give and receive support, develop responsibility and judgment, and build the academic, vocational and social skills necessary to be successful. Most students are involved in or at risk of involvement in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems. Many of LLA’s new enrollees report histories of physical and substance abuse, and more than half have parents known to abuse drugs or alcohol. Nearly half report current or past gang affiliation, and the majority have profound histories of school failure and truancy LLA is a project based learning environment. LLA successfully engages students with histories of school failure who desire new paths to academic, career and life success. LLA is designed specifically to serve the highest-need students in San Francisco. To serve these students effectively, LLA’s multidisciplinary team of educators, counselors, peers and alumni surround each student with support, identify their strengths, and work to ensure that no one falls through the cracks. Their student to teacher ratio is much smaller than a traditional school setting with a ratio of 6-12 students to 1 teacher. Students graduate with a high school diploma offered at a credit count of 200, as opposed to a traditional high school graduation credit count of 220+ credits.

Afterschool Program Description:
The YMCA on Treasure Island is generally the gathering place for island youth, with activities to satisfy all curiosities. Students are welcomed into a fun, safe, learning environment focused on building community and youth development. Students are able to participate in fun engaging recreational and enrichment activities during program. Students are also provides academic support to assist them in homework and engage in activities tailored towards continued learning. Afterschool program takes place Monday – Friday from the hours of 3:30 - 6:30 p.m. Afterschool program also offers counseling services to all afterschool program youth to provide additional support to children while in program setting. Afterschool program staff highly recommends that parents pick up their children at the end of the afterschool program. However, youth can be escorted home by Y staff, if there is not a parent home or transportation available for pickup. Treasure Island YMCA provides an afterschool program for all youth K- 8th who reside on island at no cost. Holiday/Summer Camps Program Description:
In partnership with the Embarcadero YMCA, Treasure Island residents have the opportunity to participate in various Holiday and Summer camps. During the school year, the Embarcadero YMCA provides School Holiday Camps for students in grades K-5th. The camp is located at 169 Steuart St. These camps are fee based camps that vary in prices. Financial aid is available and is based on a first come, first served. Participants have the opportunity to participate in creative enrichment, travel around the Bay Area and exciting new opportunities. More information is available

During spring break and summer, the Treasure Island YMCA offers 1 week of free camp for spring break and 7 weeks of Summer camp for all participants in the afterschool program that lives on the Island. Camp starting location is hosted at the Treasure Island YMCA. Participants then travel off the island to engage in exciting fieldtrips and meaningful experiences. The Treasures Island also offers the 7 week camp program to families of those who work on the Island at a discounted price. For more information, please stop by the Treasure Island Gym.

The Clinic is administered by DPH's Maxine Hall Health Center and is run by Maria de la Luz Abarca, RN. Maria and her staff are happy to help with common illnesses, contraception/pregnancy tests, minor injuries, blood pressure and blood glucose checks. Residents can also get flu shots and other vaccinations, “on the spot” treatments for colds, viral infections, aches and pains, asthma and allergies, rashes, lice, and more. Clinic staff also offer medical advice/counseling and can serve as a liaison between you and your primary care provider. The staff in bilingual, speaking both English and Spanish, making health care services more accessible to island residents. No appointments are necessary and no insurance or co-pays are required for services.

The Ship Shape houses several programs hosted by The Treasure Island Homeless Development Initiative (TIHDI). The Food Pantry allows you to get free food, as an island resident (ID and proof of residency required) every Tuesday from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. The Food Pantry provides one allotment of supplemental groceries per household free-of-charge, on a weekly basis (rain or shine). You can also access financial coaching services at the Ship Shape via the Economic Self-Sufficiency Program (ESSP). We can assist in correcting inaccuracies on your credit report, help you establish or re-establish credit, plan for retirement as well as other financial matters, including, but not limited to resolving back child support and taxes. We can refer you to a partnering agency to open a bank account or apply for a loan. The Economic Self-Sufficiency Program aims to assist all Island residents in building long-term economic security and offers free-of-charge services including financial management, budgeting workshops, computer classes and more. TIHDI operates a Job Broker System where we offer job placement for those interested in the construction trades and other job opportunities on the island. We work with partnering referring agencies to recruit candidates with the necessary skills to fill the various job openings that this office receives. The dog park is surrounded by open space, giving it a nice, away-from-the-city feel but is just steps away from the Treasure Island neighborhood. The park is a favorite of local island dog owners and walkers from all around.

The Treasure Island Parent Council Advocates for families and children on Treasure Island regarding various issues and concerns. The network of parents utilizes their knowledgeable and expertise in identifying resources on and off the Island to address the needs and concerns of families. The Treasure Island Development Authority (TIDA) is a non-profit, public benefit agency dedicated to the economic development of former Naval Station Treasure Island. TIDA is also responsible for administering vital municipal services to Treasure and Yerba Buena Islands. TIDA lists on their website the changes that are happening with the redevelopment of the island. On the website you can see a phase by phase projection of the planned changes along with timeframes for completion. See the attached map (Appendix B) for all four phases of development. TIDA is governed by a Commission that meets monthly: 1:30pm the second Wednesday of the month at City Hall, except in April and November when they meet in the evening on the island. Members of the public are encouraged to call this hotline number whenever they are concerned about visible dust or improper contractor practices. Those calls will have immediate response through TICD’s oversight and the caller will hear back from TICD within 48 hours.
