Joe DeLamielleurePro Football Hall of Fame Member and Member of the 1970s NFL All-Decade Team

In the 1970s, Joe DeLamielleure and his Buffalo Bills offensive line mates were dubbed the „Electric Company,‰ because they „turned the Juice loose.‰ The „Juice‰ of course was Hall of Fame running back O.J. Simpson. An All-America and three-time All-Big Ten performer at Michigan State, „Joe D‰ as he was known, was selected in the first round of the 1973 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. At first, when he failed his physical, it seemed he would never play pro football. Fortunately, further tests showed his irregular heartbeat was not serious, and Joe went on to win All-Rookie honors. It was the beginning of a string of career honors that few guards had or have since exceeded. He went on to become the most honored lineman of the Bills respected front wall. Eight times during his career he was selected first- or second-team All-Pro; seven times he was named first- or second-team All-AFC, and six times he was named to the Pro Bowl. Since 1970, only two Hall of Fame guards, John Hannah with 10 and Gene Upshaw with seven, were named All-Pro more often. In 1975, the NFL Players Association named him Offensive Lineman of the Year. Extremely durable and dependable, Joe played in 185 consecutive games during his 13 playing seasons with the Bills and the Cleveland Browns. A starter from the first game of his rookie season, DeLamielleure played and started in every game for eight seasons in Buffalo before being traded to Cleveland in 1980. During five years in Cleveland he played in every game and had only three non-starts. Primarily due to the success of the Bills running attack led by Simpson, DeLamielleure was best known for his run blocking. Behind the swift pulling guard, O.J. became the first player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season. But Joe was more than just a run blocker, he was also an effective pass blocker and rarely allowed his opponent to disrupt BuffaloÊs or ClevelandÊs pass plays. DeLamielleure, who was named to the NFLÊs 1970s All-Decade Team, finished his career in 1985 with a final season back where it had begun, in Buffalo.

Livingston Wins Award as Top LinemanLivingston Wins Award as Top LinemanThe Buffalo NewsDecember 7, 2003

John Livingston of Eden has been named winner of the inaugural lineman of the year award by members of the Trench Trophy Committee. The award, sponsored by the Lancaster Elks Lodge, takes into account a playerÊs performance on and off the field, as well as attitude. Livingston, a 6-foot-1, 285-pound senior tackle, helped open holes for an Eden backfield that averaged 267 yards per game. Eden finished 11-1, reaching the New York State Class B semifinals losing to Chenango Forks. „Our committee felt Livingston kind of portrayed the intensity that carried Eden as far as they got,‰ said committee chairman Len Kuhn. „We felt like he dominated on both sides of the ball, even against Chenango Forks, and thatÊs what made him stand out above anyone else.‰ Livingston was chosen from a group of finalists that included Ryan Amos (Cleveland Hill), Matt Graham (Orchard Park), Alex Haney (Lockport), Doug Ingraham (Grand Island), Garvie Freeman (South Park), Justin Kindt (Depew), Gary Maull (Olean), Brandon Randle (Burgard), Chris Smith (St. Francis), and Doug Worthington (St. Francis).

The Buffalo NewsDecember 5, 2004

Jason Weber, whose work in the trenches helped lead the Orchard Park football team to the Section VI Class AA championship, is this yearÊs winner of the Trench Trophy as Western New YorkÊs superior lineman. Weber was a three-year starter for the Quakers and was named to the All-Western New York first team. At defensive tackle, the 6- foot, 265-pound senior captain led OP in tackles with 90, and at right guard he helped create openings for running back Andy Pace (1,277 yards). Weber also finished fourth in the state as a heavyweight wrestler last year, is a shot put and discus thrower in track and is an Eagle Scout. The Trench Trophy was created last year by the Lancaster Elks Club, which will host an award ceremony Dec. 14 at which Weber will be presented with a $500 scholarship. He will also be honored at SaturdayÊs Western New York football banquet. The Trench Trophy Committee, which included more than 50 scouts and coaches who attended games and viewed films throughout the season, picked an honor roll of top linemen each week before selecting 11 finalists. The other finalists were: Tim Brown (Burgard), Steve Coan (Frewsburg), Matt Langworthy (Southwestern), Ian Margerum (Hamburg), Matt Miller (Portville), Alex Port (North Tonawanda), Adam Rosner (Depew), Adriel Santiago (South Park), Chris Smith (St. Francis) and Doug Worthington (St. Francis).

Christman Wins Trench TrophyChristman Wins Trench TrophyThe Buffalo NewsDecember 6, 2007

The notion that Sweet Home had an exceptional line this season got a big boost Wednesday when two-way standout Nick Christman was named winner of the fifth annual Trench Trophy. The award, sponsored by Lancaster Elks Lodge No. 1478, recognizes the top lineman in Western New York. „IÊm really excited because this is a really big thing and there are a lot of good kids out there,‰ said Christman. Christman was presented the award during a banquet attended by over 200 at the Lancaster Elks Club on Broadway. The eventÊs guest speaker was Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame member Joe Foyle of Lancaster. Christman, a 6-foot-2, 285- pound senior, was an offensive guard and defensive tackle. With Christman dominating on both sides of the ball, Sweet Home won Section VIÊs Class A title finishing with a 10-1 record. The PanthersÊ only loss was in the Far West Regionals to Aquinas of Section V. In that game Christman was named Defensive MVP. „My goal on defense is to run sideline-to-sideline on every play and on offensive itÊs to knock the kid across from me on his butt. That keeps me going every play,‰ said Christman. „You play as hard as you can and never give up.‰ The annual winner of the Trench Trophy is determined by a 51-man committee of qualified Elks Lodge members, local coaches and former players. During all 11 weeks of the football season, Trench Trophy scouts attended select games of all 87 teams in Western New York to rate and grade players for nominations. An original list of over 300 lineman was whittled down to a top 10. Carl Kuras, a Trench Trophy co-chairman, said Christman was the top vote-getter on most ballots. „The committee felt his tenacity on both sides of the ball was the deciding factor,‰ said Kuras. „He had stamina to go both ways. He had a motor on both sides of the ball and displayed leadership. Being the MVP on a losing team in the Regionals is pretty impressive.‰ Christman played four seasons on Sweet HomeÊs varsity team. For the past two seasons he was a first-team All-Western New York selection. Previous winners of the award have been Gil Rodriguez (Frontier, 2006), Jesse Jesonowski (Iroquois, Ê05), Jason Weber (Orchard Park, Ê04) and John Livingston (Eden, Ê03).

Canisius tackle is top lineman

By Mary Jo MonninThe Buffalo NewsDecember 11, 2008

Seeing John Urschel compete against Aquinas and St. Francis was all Charlie Graver needed to convince him he was looking at this yearÊs Trench Trophy winner. The organizationÊs head scout and 30 other committee members agreed as the Canisius senior was named winner of the sixth annual award Wednesday night before 200 at the Lancaster Elks. „Considering AquinasÊ reputation and the linemen and the size they had, even though Canisius lost the game, he was dominant,‰ said Graver. „He was all over the field on every play on offense and every play on defense. He had that never-quit attitude.‰ The award, sponsored by the Lancaster Elks Lodge No. 1478, recognizes the top lineman in Western New York. The committee includes members of the Elks Lodge, local coaches and former players. During the 13-week season, the committee scouted all 87 teams in WNY. Urschel was chosen from an original list of more than 300 candidates. The 6-foot-4, 275-pound Urschel was a two-way tackle for the Crusaders (6-4), runners-up to St. Francis in the Monsignor Martin AssociationÊs League AA. Urschel was named to the All-Catholic first team in all three of his years as a starter. His tremendous skills, along with a 94 academic average, has allowed him to consider Stanford, Princeton, Cornell and the University at Buffalo. The timing of the award couldnÊt have been better for Urschel, who had an in-home visit with PrincetonÊs head coach after the award presentation. „This is a great feeling,‰ said Urschel, who wanted to recognize his line coach Rich Robbins and head coach Brandon Harris. „I wasnÊt sure I was going to win it; these are all great players. It could have been any of us.‰ The eventÊs guest speaker was longtime NFL offensive line coach and Kenmore native Jim McNally. He encouraged the athletes and their parents to „enjoy the journey‰ their high school years offer.

SouthwesternÊs Carlson Best in the TrenchesSouthwesternÊs Carlson Best in the Trenches

John Hickey/Buffalo News SouthwesternÊs Jasen Carlson, with Trench Trophy co-chair Ed Sciera and former Buffalo Bills offensive line coach Jim McNally, starred on both sides of the ball.

By Mary Jo MonninThe Buffalo NewsDecember 10, 2009

The Trench Trophy scouts who focused on the play of SouthwesternÊs Jasen Carlson this season often came back with similar observations. „It was like running into a brick wall when you went to his side,‰ said Carl Kuras, co-chairman of the organization that annually recognizes the top high school football lineman. „You had to game-plan around him. If you didnÊt you were in trouble.‰ The 6-foot-3, 300-pound senior was recognized for his efforts on both sides of the ball Wednesday night as he won the seventh annual Trench Trophy during a banquet for 230 held at the Lancaster Elks. Carlson anchored both sides of the line for Southwestern, winners of the past two New York State Class C titles. This season he had 51 tackles, two fumble recoveries and forced two fumbles. In CarlsonÊs four years as a starter, the Trojans went 42-4. „It helps a lot having great athletes at the quarterback and the running back position like Zack Sopak, Levi Bursch and John Mistretta and all my other teammates. It makes it pretty easy,‰ said Carlson. „A lot of great players have won this award. IÊm just glad to be one of them.‰ ItÊs been a big week for the Southwestern football program as quarterback Zack Sopak won the Connolly Cup last Saturday. Southwestern coach Jay Sirianni said Carlson is the best lineman heÊs coached in his seven seasons. „He demands a double team on defense. Offensively, JasenÊs technique is well refined for a high school player,‰ he said. The eventÊs guest speaker was Buffalo Bills right tackle Kirk Chambers. Also attending was longtime NFL offensive line coach and Kenmore native Jim McNally. The award is sponsored by the Lancaster Elks Lodge No. 1478. Players from all 86 teams in Western New York were scouted during the first 10 weeks of the season. Kuras, along with 24 other committee members, chose Carlson from an original list of 100. For the first time juniors were eliminated from consideration. Other finalists for this yearÊs award were: Troy Bigelow (Eden), Dillon Gallagher (Williamsville South), Eric Harnden (Grand Island), Matt Hornung (Cheektowaga), Desmond Howard (St. Francis), Zach Marsh (Panama), Sean Mulhern (Riverside), Casey Shreve (North Tonawanda) and Kyle Shreve (North Tonawanda). Past recipients are: John Urschel of Canisius (2008), Nick Christman of Sweet Home (2007), Gil Rodriquez of Frontier (2006), Jesse Jesonowski of Iroquois (2005), Jason Weber of Orchard Park (2004) and John Livingston of Eden (2003).

PioneerÊs Anna wraps up Trench TrophyPioneerÊs Anna wraps up Trench Trophy

Mark Mullville/Buffalo News Dylan Anna was chosen from an original list of 55.

Dominant lineman hauls in hardwareBy Mary Jo MonninThe Buffalo NewsDecember 9, 2010

Dylan Anna made a first impression that turned into a lasting impression. The Pioneer senior, discovered by scouts early in the voting process, was named the winner of the eighth annual Trench Trophy on Wednesday during a banquet for 200 at the Lancaster Elks. „One of our scouts after the first week said ÂyouÊve got to see this guy,ʉ said Trench Trophy co-chairman Ed Sciera. „He just goes and goes. He was on our radar from the beginning. He plays to the whistle. HeÊll make his initial block, and then he looks downfield for the next guy to block. That was one of the first things that attracted us.‰ The award recognizes the top senior lineman among all 86 football teams in Western New York. Sciera, along with 40 other committee members, chose Anna from an original list of 55, which made up the five nominees from each of the 11 weeks of voting. Committee members watched an estimated 700 hours of film before giving the nod to Anna. „IÊm kind of stunned, all the hard work and sweat and tears finally paid off,‰ said Anna, who received the award from former Buffalo Bills line coach Jim McNally. „I was so happy to be a finalist and then they called my name.‰ The award is sponsored by the Lancaster Elks Lodge No. 1478. Its $1,000 scholarship was funded by the friends and family of the late John Gebhardt, who died unexpectedly on Dec. 10, 2009. Gebhardt was a member of the Elks and a 1964 graduate of Lancaster. He played football at Maryland. Anna hopes to continue his career and is considering St. John Fisher, among other schools. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Pioneer co-captain was also second team All-Western New York. An offensive guard and defensive tackle, he led the Panthers to a 7-2 record and a No. 8 ranking in the WNY small school poll. Retired Lackawanna coach and Trench Trophy Executive Committee member Bill Pukalo saw Anna play three times. He said he was good in pass protection, hitting a second-layer defenseman and could get down field. „He was everything you wanted in a lineman,‰ Pukalo said. „It seemed he was well-respected by opponents because he was getting double-teamed. When it takes two people to block one guy, thatÊs a good sign. I talked to him before one of the games. He seemed very focused.‰ Guest speakers were Jack Catanzaro, a Lancaster graduate and All-American at Union College; Dave Hack, the Niagara-Wheatfield coach and All-CFL Hamilton Tiger Cats lineman; and Nick Christman, a Sweet Home graduate, starting guard at Edinboro and the 2007 Trench Trophy winner. The Underclassman of the Year award was presented by Hack and went to junior guard/defensive tackle Andrew Burgio of Depew. Other finalists for the Trench Trophy were: Austin Bauer (Lancaster), Jack Cambria (St. JoeÊs), Ben Fluent (Randolph), Pat Langworthy (Southwestern), Thomas NeMoyer (Canisius), Anthony Sanders (McKinley), Mike Schiavi (Lackawanna), Todd Therrien (Williamsville East) and Dereon Washington (Riverside).

OPÊs Leach powers his way to Trench TrophyOPÊs Leach powers his way to Trench Trophy

John Hickey /Buffalo NewsDevon Leach of Orchard Park was presented with the Trench Trophy by former NFL line coach Jim McNally.

By Mary Jo MonninThe Buffalo NewsDecember 8, 2011

Devon Leach couldnÊt be beaten on the field and on Wednesday night he couldnÊt be beaten off of it. The Orchard Park senior came out on top in a field of 10 finalists to land the ninth Trench Trophy. A punishing run blocker on an undefeated team, Leach was presented the annual award recognizing the top lineman in Western New York before an estimated 250 at the Lancaster Elks Lodge. „It was quite a surprise and IÊm honored to get it,‰ said Leach, who is 6-foot-3 and weighs 290 pounds. „I had four great guys play around me, and they made me look good. We worked really hard together. WeÊre good friends, we spent a lot of time together and had really great chemistry.‰ The handsome trophy also comes with a $1,000 scholarship named for the late John Gebhardt, one of the Trench TrophyÊs founders. After a year of prep school at Bridgton Academy in Maine, Leach is planning to attend Yale and continue his football career while majoring in pre-med and biology. Leach becomes the second Orchard Park lineman to win the award, joining Jason Weber, the 2004 recipient. „One-on-one blocking, there was no one who could take him on,‰ said longtime OP line coach Bob Ferrentino. „As far as run-blocking, heÊs right up there with the best. He moves pretty well and is also a good student.‰ Ferrentino said this was the biggest and strongest line heÊs had in his 18 years. „Not only did they have size, they moved very well. They were like 300-pound ballerinas,‰ he said. Leach, who can squat 650 pounds and bench 350, anchored a line from his left guard spot that paved the way for gifted running back Okoya Anderson to gain 1,705 yards and score 33 touchdowns. Leach was at his best in short-yardage or goal-line situations. He was named the offensive line MVP of the Class AA state championship game. Trench Trophy scout Dave Hajduk watched hours of film of Leach from four games and voted for him. He was one of 43 Trench Trophy scouts who saw at least three games. „The biggest thing I liked about Leach was he was good at going after the linebackers and defensive backs,‰ said Hajduk. „In high school you donÊt see a lot of that. He was very good at getting the right angle and taking them out. For a big guy like that, that was unusual.‰ Orchard ParkÊs O-line averaged 267 pounds. Joining Leach with his hand on the ground were senior Matthew Dolan (RG), sophomore Adam Belica (C), junior Michael Senn (RT), senior Chris Eisenhut (LT). Leach and Senn were first team All-Western New York selections while Eisenhut was third team. Other Trench Trophy finalists were: Dan Austin (Southwestern), Nathan Anderson (Frewsburg), Miles Bartholomew (St. Francis), Josh Chase (Alden), Kyle DiPirro (St. MaryÊs), Brandon Lathrop (Kenmore West), Mike Morganstern (Cheektowaga), T.J. Scamurra (Williamsville South) and Andrew Burgio (Depew).

Trench Trophy caps HunterÊs journeyTrench Trophy caps HunterÊs journey

Mark Mullville/Buffalo News Winner Ryan Hunter of Canisius holds the Trench Trophy after it was given to him by Jim McNally during WednesdayÊs ceremony.

By Mary Jo MonninThe Buffalo NewsDecember 5, 2012

Ryan Hunter, the 6-foot-5, 315-pound lineman, felt as humbled as he is big on Wednesday night after being named the winner of the Trench Trophy, recognizing the top lineman in Western New York. The 10th annual award was presented before a gathering of 250 at the Elks Lodge in Lancaster. „Linemen donÊt get the awards as much because, honestly, people are watching the running backs or quarterback or wide receivers. WeÊre kind of hidden,‰ he said. „And coming from Canada, and not being from the area originally, I really appreciate what everyone has done for me.‰ A native of North Bay, Ont., about five hours north of Buffalo, Hunter made the most of his two varsity seasons at Canisius, displaying an ability to move people. He played right tackle on the offensive line and nose tackle and defensive end out of the CrusadersÊ 3-4. With English as his second language · he transferred to Canisius from Ecole Secondaire Catholique Algonquin · heÊs managed to maintain a 90 average at a demanding school academically. Hunter bettered a field of nine other finalists. The Trench TrophyÊs scouts were fixtures at games all season and watched hundreds of hours of film before arriving at their decision. Hunter was quick to cite his teammates on the offensive line as sharing in the award with him: center Patrick Haley, left guard Jake Muscarella, left tackle Emil DiNardo and right guard David Koeppel. Hunter, who can bench press 350 pounds and squat 550, anchored a line that opened holes for a running game that averaged 251 yards per game. He helped the Crusaders to an 11-0 season and the Monsignor Martin Association championship. Last week he was named The Buffalo News co-Player of the Year. „We cared a lot about each other and were a really close-knit senior group,‰ said Hunter. „WeÊre a good group of friends, we like to hang out and we had a lot of chemistry. We understood the concepts of the offense and our backfield understood what we were trying to do.‰ Hunter becomes the second lineman from Canisius to earn the prestigious award, following 2008 winner John Urschel, a redshirt junior at Penn State. The other finalists were: Jason Bunk (Alden), John Czech (Jamestown), Cortland Haines (Jamestown), Sean Murphy (Timon/St. Jude), Nick Nocek (Fredonia), Michael Senn (Orchard Park), Tyler Studd (Springville), Khalil Summerville (Bennett) and Jake Swan (Maple Grove). Winning the Trench Trophy also comes with a $1,000 scholarship named for the late John Gebhardt, one of the Trench TrophyÊs founders. Hunter plans on applying the scholarship toward his education at Bowling Green University, a Division I program that plays in the Mid-American Conference. HeÊs given his verbal commitment and is expected to sign his national letter of intent with the Falcons in February. He also has an offer from the University at Buffalo. A possible college major would be psychology. He said heÊll listen to offers from bigger programs if they come, but as of this writing, he likes the relationship heÊs fostered with the Bowling Green coaching staff and is sticking with his decision. „I donÊt have any intention on de-committing for now. I told my parents I want to play the best football I can, and if a better offer comes, I would probably end up taking the better offer. The opportunity hasnÊt come up yet to take another offer, but I donÊt want to close all the doors until you have to.‰

By Mary Jo MonninThe Buffalo NewsDecember 12, 2013

In what was the closest vote in its 11-year history, Hamburg senior Jeremiah Bill graciously accepted the Trench Trophy at a banquet held Wednesday night before 220 at the Lancaster Elks. The 6-foot-2, 265-pound Bill was presented the award, given annually to the top lineman in Western New York, by retired NFL offensive line coach Jim McNally, a native of Kenmore. „It means a lot of hard work paying off,‰ Bill said. „It shows anyone can achieve what they put themselves out to do. ItÊs also an award for my teammates. It was all of us working together and we had a lot of young guys step up.‰ Winning the Trench Trophy also comes with a $1,000 scholarship named for the late John Gebhardt, one of the Trench TrophyÊs founders. Bill is undecided on his college choice but is considering the University at Buffalo, the University of Rochester and Cornell. Bill becomes the first player from Hamburg to win the honor. The Bulldogs finished 2-3 this season in Class A South. Linemen from all 78 high school football teams in Western New York were eligible. Bill, an offensive tackle and defensive end, was also recently named second team All-WNY on the O-line. The guest speaker for the event was 2009 Trench Trophy winner Jasen Carlson, a graduate of Southwestern, who played left guard for the University at Buffalo. This yearÊs vote was so close there were five linemen within three points of each other. A committee of 50-plus members scouted games during the season eventually narrowing their list down before choosing Bill. Trench Trophy scout Dave Hajduk said he saw Bill play in person and also watched plenty of film. „If you look, he was the complete package,‰ said Hajduk. „He could box somebody and look to make another block. HeÊs got the right attitude. He played to the whistle. The word for him was aggression under control.‰ Trench Trophy co-chairman Ed Sciera said Bill was identified early as a possible winner. Bill scored high grades for technique and consistency. „We had him in our data base from last year so we had a little heads up,‰ he said. „We had guys watching him early as potential finalist. We liked his consistency on both sides of the ball, subsequent scouts confirmed that, but it was the close vote. In all the years this was the closest vote.‰ The third annual Underclassman Awards, sponsored by Dave HackÊs Be the Best Football camp, were also part of the event. First team All-WNY selection George Attea of Williamsville North and third team OL Michael Bowers of Randolph and were this yearÊs recipients.

In 2010 the Trench Trophy saw the loss of two of its founding members, John Gebhardt and Tom Terhart. These men were very important supporters of and generous contributors to the award. Their loss greatly affected the committee and everyone who knew them.

The Trench Trophy is proud to announce that our yearly college scholarship and Pitbull Awards have been renamed in honor of these members.

The John Gebhardt Memorial Scholarship and Tom Terhart Pitbull Awards, which recognizes players at linebacker, fullback, and tight-end, are proud additions to our program; these awards were both renamed by result of a unanimous vote by the Trench Trophy Committee in late August of 2010.

Though we will always miss these great men, the Trench Trophy is honored that their legacy as supporters of the award will live on.

John Gebhardt and Tom TerhartForever Enshrined
