Can you taste it? That utterly delicious & sumptuous aroma of summer…it’s everywhere…savour it, devour it, indulge in it. It’s time to refresh your wardrobe & re-invent your look…because fashion this summer is sizzling hot. July is like dipping your toe into a pool of summer delights… before you know it you’ll be plunged into sultry, barely there dresses with chocolate skin & raspberry lips. But for the moment, lets enjoy the cool evenings….with soft bolero jackets, maxi dresses, suede fringed boots & denim layers. Jumpsuits work wonders by taking you from lazy beach days to early evening cocktails and beyond, oh so sexy one step dressing. One of the pleasures of summer is following the breeze, jumping seamlessly from daytime into nighttime….be prepared for anything & everything…all you need is sunkissed skin (I love NARS bronzer & copacabana highlighter), summertime jewellery (natural stones in coral or jade), a great pair of clogs (mine live in my car for this very reason) and, most importantly, a carefree spirit. So whether your style is hippy beach bohemia or 50’s poolside glamour this summer is all about looking fabu-lous...effortlessly.

Marbella Old Town...although not the epitome of fashion, the amazing colours, smells & sights evoke nostalgia for it’s incredible history & tradition...alongside new eateries, vintage clothes shops & and many hidden treasures.

Larios 12 Villa del Mar

The fashion crowd of Marbella flocked to Villa del Mar, the private villa of Marbella Club and probably the most extravagant setting for par-ties on the coast. I was mesmerized by the utter romance of the place, later to discover a kitsch style nightclub in the basement…what a sur-prise! No surprise was the huge fish bowls of “Larios 12” gin & tonic (my favourite summer tipple) with plenty of freshly squeezed lemon…zing…r&b music pumped throughout the villa as jackets came off and the dance floor got hotter & hotter…another g&t over here!!!

I LOVE suiteSuite gave back the love to Marbella with heart shaped cookies, I heart Suite t-shirts to our favourite people (you know who you are) and a kickass party. The summer evening allowed dinner guests to dine in the incredible terrace of Plaza Romana where Moroccan lamps adorn the walls and the lush tropical plants infuse the air with a suite smell. By midnight dj Zoe turns up the volume & gets heartbeats racing, the dinner tables clear and magnum’s of grey goose appear. Linda, Suite’s very own “Goddess”, greets all the clients like good friends, which actually they are. One of the last weekends before we move to the beach.....just declaring our love for our cosy winter hang out and all our incredible clients (you’re all wearing I heart Suite t-shirts by the way)…..it’s going to be a suite summer 2010.

Easy summer style

We all embraced the wind, used it like Kylie does…so all the girls dancing in the wind on the beds looked sexy as hell. As did Ana Lucia, Nikki Beach’s lovely PR.Everyone in white yet so many fashion statements made – from simple white jeans & vests with cowboy hats to sparkly diamond encrusted works of art….has that girl just got married? Nikki beach staff, all drop dead gorgeous, literally running with huge-ly oversized bottles of wine, champagne & vodka…cat like girls in cages…wild men bang passionately on metal makeshift drums…but all of us who have experienced the white party know this – once the fireworks light up the sky to the sound of the crowd’s whhhooooas & whheeeeees we all go crazy… sipping cold champagne suddenly seems so boring…dancing like it’s the end of the world? That’s Nikki Beach style.

HOW TO BE A GREEN GODDESS.BECAUSE GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK

This page is dedicated to those earth conscious girls out there who want to be more eco-friendly, and what better way to do it than via our passion for fashion? However, we definitely do not want our appearance to suffer by “going green” and so we have found some cute ways to keep couture sustainable.

VINTAGE: For ethical and unique chic, go vintage. This has got to be one of fashion’s biggest buzz words of the moment. If it is quality, attention to detail, eclectic style and one of a kind pieces you are after then vintage clothing is for you. You can scour the Internet for key pieces for your wardrobe or pop into one of the few thrift stores here in San Pedro or Marbella (unfortunately the coast is not a vintage haven) or search through the goodies at the markets.

Why Buy Vintage? You can find

“One must either be a work of art, or wear a work of art” Oscar Wilde.

some serious bargains when buying vintage clothing and can sleep safe in the satisfactory, planet-friendly knowledge that you are helping to recycle exist-ing clothes and not contributing to sweat shops, slave labour or using the earth’s limited resourc-es in the production W of new items.

Who Wears It? For inspiration look to Dita Von Teese, Alexa Chung, Agyness Deyn, Kate Moss, Sarah Jessica Parker & Katy Perry. Take a look at: www.decadesinc.com , www.absolutevintage.co.ukwww.beyondretro.com and www.relliklondon.co.uk for some online vintage treasures.

Hints On Buying Vintage: Go for key pieces that never date such as, great denim, evening dresses, trench coats, white shirts, pencil skirts, cashmere twin sets or the pea coat. Vintage sizes tend to be smaller so be careful to check measurements.

Local Vintage? There are a few thrift stores in San Pedro, Mar-bella and Estepona however they are more the kind that house your Spanish granny coats, old golf jumpers and strange nick-knacks but if you look hard enough and really think outside the box you can find some great little treasures, even if you just use the material to create some-thing new, open your mind and you will find! Also check out my favourite little hidden treasure – Déjà vu Vintage Clothing shop in old town Marbella for an on the doorstep browse of some great designer oldies but goodies in-

cluding Hermès, Leonard, Pucci, Fendi & Louis Vuitton to name a few.

Vintage Accessories: Go forth and rummage at one of the many local “rastro” markets (Fuengi-

rola on Saturdays, Savanillas on Sundays – get there early to avoid traffic and to nab the best items). You can find some love-ly old ornamental pieces for your accessory collection such as brooches, pins, hair pieces, shawls, scarves, belts, etc.

We Love: Old wicker style hand baskets instead of your regular beach or shopping bag.

If you do get a chance to visit London and are serious about buy-ing Vintage here are some top end stockists with the best in all that is classic Vintage. Follow the many fashion house scouts on their search for new in-spiration and head for the King’s Road to Steinberg &

Tolkien, a Vintage institution. Virginia in West London. Rellik in Portabello Road and last but definitely not least Beyond Retro just off Brick Lane...it’s amazing how suddenly, an old classic can become the season’s hottest look.

Next month…how to recycle and re-invent your own wardrobe into a whole new collection with just some scissors and some inspira-tion!

Slouched, sheer, and sparkling, the socks at Christian Dior

It’s not often a runway trend comes around which can be bought for under €5. For spring 2010 the ubiquitous exposed sock is just that—both chic and cheap.Slouched, sheer, and spar-kling, the socks at Christian Dior were paired with metal-lic party dresses and platform sandals. At Alexander Wang and Alexandre Herchcovitch the look was knee-high and sporty, while Christopher Bailey and Hannah MacGibbon went for chunky knit socks in neutrals at Burberry Prorsum and Chloé, respectively.

“Fashion fades, only style remains the same.”

Coco Chanel

We all know the names, Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Dolce and Gabbana, Armani and all the other icons. We are familiar with their designs but what do we know about the people themselves. Here are some

short notes on when and where they started.

O.k lets start with some of the ones mentioned above.

Coco Chanel was born in 1883 and worked as a milli-ner (hat maker) until the first World War when she was a nurse. Following World War 1 she opened a couture house in Paris and revolutionised women’s fashions during the 1920s. She started the ‘little black dress’ the ‘chemise’ dress and collarless cardigans Marilyn Monroe when asked what she wore in bed famously said Chanel No 5

A more recent fashion house was founded in 1982 in

Milan by Domerico Dolce the one with the beard, a shy man from Sicily and Stephano Gabbana. During the 1990s Dolce and Gabbana went into menswear and started their youth line. Although their personal romantic liason finished in 2005 after 19 years the label continues.

Christian Dior was born in 1905 at 40 years old just after World War 2 he started his fashion house which became famous for the long skirted ‘New look’ in 1947 and later the H and A line. He died aged 52 in 1957.

Donna Daran or Donna Faske, her real name, was born in New York City in 1948. she worked for Anne Klain until Klins death in 1974 when she took over the company. She later started her own label with her husband Stephen Weis,

Fendi Now I need your attention on this one. In 1918 Adele Casagrande opened a fur and leather workshop in Rome. In 1925 she married Edoardo Fendi, and as men will always do it you let them he took it over. He died in 1954 and his daughters Alda, Anna, Carla, Franca and Paola took over the company. Adele lived until 1978. Prada and Louis Vuitton now have a controlling interest, and Karl Lagerfield has designed the Fendi Fur collection since 1962.

Hermes an even older label. Thierry Hermes founded the world famous fashion house in 1837 as a madder of equestrian accessories, saddles etc. It is still in the family’ the present boss being Jean-Louis Dumas, the fifth generation. They are famous for camel coats and grunge, but their silk scarfs and handbags especially the ‘Kelly’ bag (Grace Kelly made it popular) are their best sellers.

A. What’s a typical day in the life of Nicole the fashion blogger? I wake up, reply to emails, read my daily blogs and then start whatever i need to get done for Gary Pepper which can range from sourcing new stock, taking photos, listing on ebay to sending out items, replying to customers or ordering new supplies. Because i try to juggle my blog with running my online vintage store every day is never really the same and is the main reason i struggle to find time to do outfit posts as often as i would like to!

A. So, we’ve heard you’ve been a busy busy lady of recent times. Launching the very sought after vintage brand Gary Pepper, How did you come about to setting up this fabulous company? I always knew i was going to own my own online vintage boutique since i was about 15. It was about the same time i walked into my very first opshop and discovered the exciting and fascinating world of vintage. Once i finished school i spent about 2 years research-ing and planning and finally launched my own brand in late 2009. After about 2 months i decided to take a leap of faith and quit my full time job and it’s been one of the best decisions i’ve ever made. I could never have imagined the store to start as quickly as it has though and am constantly overwhelmed by the attention it receives.

Nicole Warne

A.Where did you get the name “Gary Pepper”? Gary Pepper was actually created as a side project by my boyfriend who is a graphic designer and is one of the many gifts he has contributed to my store since it opened. About three years ago i saw Gary Pepper on his desktop and instantly fell in love with it’s quirky and unique name, especially as Gary is a girl and it contradicts itself. The name just stuck and i’ve kept it ever since.

A.what is your hottest item in your wardrobe, and why? I can’t go past my YSL ring and Jeffrey Campbell wedges. I love to mix my modern items with classic vintage pieces and these wedges go with absolutely everything and give my outfit that extra edge.

A. Is there a particular designer that inspirers you? Alexander Mcqueen, Alexander Wang and Karl lager-field are constantly pushing the boundaries and i am excited to see what they design every season.

A. You’re quickly making a name for yourself in the online fashion circles, what is it about fashion that you passionately love? What i love about fashion is not only the freedom you have to express yourself in a unique and quirky way but also the feeling of putting together an outfit despite what trends and magazine tell you to and being con-fident in yourself with what you’re wearing. For me, fashion helped me to discover who i am and taught me

to be comfortable in my own skin, and i think that’s something every girl should learn whether it be through fashion or something else.

A. In your mind what makes a great fashion design? For me it would have to be innovation and risk taking. Yes, it may or may not work but how would fashion ever evolve if nobody took some risks? Innovation is a gift and what i admire about every great fashion de-signer.

A. You must get creative block every now and then, where do you go to get inspiration from? I draw my inspiration from vintage, online lookbooks like chictopia, lookbook.nu and weardrobe and fashion blogs. I am more inspired by the everyday girls i see than anything i see in magazines. I also find opshop-ping very therapeutic so if i am feeling a little unin-spired i always go searching for some amazing vintage!

“I also finally got to wear this amazing vintage floral two piece that i have decided

to keep after weeks of contemplating”.

Page 24: TRES CHIC, July Issue 2010

A.What’s been the highlight of your career to date? This one happened very recently but i have just been invited to be one of 5 guest stylists on Sole-struck.com by Jeffrey Campbell. Seeing as every single girl, myself included, loves Jeffrey Camp-bell this has been one of the most surreal experi-ences that i cannot wait to be a part of.

A. If you could choose one fashion icon (dead or alive) who would it be? It sounds cliche but i would have to chose alexa chung. She is the epitome of cool modern prep

meets classic vintage style. She mixes her modern and vintage pieces with ease and is constantly inspiring me.

A.And finally what’s the fu-ture got in store for Nicole? The next year you will see me expanding my store, design-ing and producing my own clothing line, traveling over-seas to source new fabrics

and vintage, opening my own web store, hiring staff, moving into a new studio and many other ex-citing projects. Everyday i’m constantly thinking of new ideas and projects to improve Gary Pepper but i just don’t have enough time to do them all!

To keep up to date with Nicole, you can follow her blog at www.garypeppervintage.com or become a fan on facebook!

“Melbourne, i adore you.”

“Celebrating with my coloured confetti. The day was just perfect and everything

had a beautiful whimsical feel.”

to travel the world sourcing exquisite UNIQUE PIECES and meeting interesting new

people along the way.’

HER STORY: Lia was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland to parents who danced competitively in Ball-room dancing and started the big-gest dance school in Ireland. She decided from a very young age that she wanted to follow in her par-ents’ dancing footsteps and trained in their school fast developing her passion for dance from the age of three. By the time she was twelve she was studying and competing in London every weekend from Friday to Sunday and flying back to attend

school, she managed to maintain this level of commitment for four years, never missing a trip even at Christ-mas time. At 16 years old she went to London for the whole year and then at 17 linked up with Rosario Guerra as her long-term competing partner. He was the Italian champion at the time and so when she moved to Naples to compete at a serious level they went ahead to conquer the world. Together within four years they had won the British, UK, USA and International Championships,

ranked World No.1 by the IDSF (In-ternational Dance Sport Federation and met success at every turn.At 21 she gave up competing to teach at her parents dance school and pass on her enthusiasm, energy and passion for dance to the next generation. She became a qualified teacher with the UKA (United King-dom Alliance) and the IF (Irish Fed-eration) teaching in Dublin for eight years until her recent move to Mar-bella to take on further challenges of teaching in Spain and becoming a mum. A couple of years ago Lia was the first Irish person and youngest ever to be asked to judge the world championships.Let’s find out a little more about the girl behind the steps…meet Lia Mullins.

Lia and her new husband Sean came to meet me at a beachfront location in Estepona looking fresh-faced, smiley and glowing with her five month bump barely noticeable. You can feel the dedication and determi-nation literally oozing out of Lia as she describes her love of dance and urgency to pass on her knowledge to as many as she can. Hello Lia, I have read all about your achievements, did you ever have time to be a teenager? No. I really didn’t. When I was twelve I would have been going to parties but as you know I was trave-ling to London every weekend to dance and compete and so never re-ally had the chance to do any of that. Then being back at school all week and trying to focus on that took up all of my time really. It must have been hard to focus on school with so much else going on in your life.Yes, I did try to concentrate at school but really from day one of secondary school I knew my heart wasn’t in it, I knew I wanted to be a dancer.Did your parents influence you into becoming a dancer or did you decide that for yourself?

LIA MULLIANSRanked number one in the world for Ballroom dancing, Lia Mullian talks to us about her years of dedicated training and her life here on the Costa Del Sol so far.by Victoria Wood

No, I was never pushed, but I de-cided from a very young age that it was what I wanted to do and they simply encouraged and supported me through it all. So was there anyone you aspired to, any idols or inspiration?Actually no, I didn’t aspire to any-one as such; I just knew where I wanted to get to. My inspiration was to reach a certain level and to achieve that was my goal. And you certainly achieved that goal. You had done so much by the age of 21, why did you decide to stop competing then?It was very young to stop compet-ing, I could have continued well into my thirties and entered into different age groups but by that time we had already won some major titles and been ranked number one in the world, plus I felt like I needed a break and as I mentioned I had never had a chance to be a teenager or “have a life” for myself so I decided to take a different path. So you went on to teach, is that the next step for ex-competi-tors?Yes, if you still want to be in-volved in it all, teaching is the best way to go. You can focus all your energy on teaching something valuable to the kids. It was a natural progression for me, I didn’t want to walk away entirely from the dance scene and so started teaching at my parents’ school and eventually took that over. The dance school was very success-ful, I hear you had classes all over Dublin, how did that work?I couldn’t be everywhere so I would train up other dance teachers to go around Dublin and teach adults but I always taught all the kids myself in the school. We had around 300 students per week and would send some of them off to compete; they were very successful. Business was going well, what made you decide to pack up and

move out to Marbella?Business was great and is still run-ning back home now but I needed more of a challenge. I have been coming to Marbella in the summer for many years as a child, and so knew the area pretty well, but when I heard that in Madrid & Barcelona there are around 10,000 competi-tors in Ballroom and Latin Ameri-can Dance compared to Andalucia where there are practically none I saw a big challenge ahead of me and jumped at it. I wanted to cre-ate opportunity for people where it doesn’t exist. And you are expecting a baby, is this your first and do you plan to

stay now?Yes, I am five months now. Sean and I got married and moved out here last year and have decided to settle here and bring up our little girl. It is such a lovely place, we love the lifestyle and also as I said there’s the challenge of bringing competitive Ballroom Dance to the area. You already have classes in the area, where can we find you?We have classes in Sotogrande, Es-tepona, San Pedro (coming soon), Marbella, Swans School, Torreque-brada and Benalmadena so far. And are you planning to keep on teaching well into your pregnancy?Oh yes, definitely. I hope I will be able to keep going right up until

the end. People think I am mad but I think it is possible. I hope to be back soon after the baby is born too. My mum was actually back dancing three days after I was born!So we can see where the dedication and determination comes from then, a true strong Irish woman! So what is your long-term plan?My husband is a personal trainer and so we want to set up a proper centre for personal training with a fully equipped gym and of course a professional dance studio. There re-ally isn’t anything like that here at the moment. Where did your costumes come from when you were competing?

The people who make all the costumes for Strictly Come Dancing designed them. They also made my wedding dress- the only one they have ever made. It was amazing. That brings me on nicely to my final question, which I wasn’t sure whether to bring up! What do you think about Strictly Come Dancing and has it had a positive effect on Ballroom Dancing?I honestly don’t really watch it, I did at the beginning out of curiosity but now it isn’t that interesting to me. However I do think that it has had a major effect on Ballroom Dancing in

that it has taken away the stereotype that it is just for old people and has given people a chance to see the glamorous and attractive sides of it. Also we definitely had people queuing up outside the doors to start classes thanks to the hype that sur-rounded it. People were definitely keener and excited to get involved so yes it was fantastic for business!

If you would like to get in touch with Lia Mullins or join one of her classes please visit her website and see more about her amazing achievements, www.liamullins.com.

Hareem Pants - Another fabulous fashion trend for the summer. A key piece for any fashionistas wardrobe they can take you from day to night.Harem pants have been trying to be a hit

on the high street for a few years but only now are we starting to see a fabulous variation of styles and fabrics appearing in magazines and shops. Don’t feel you have to keep up with every trend as they don’t always suit our body shape / size or age. If you don’t feel confident wearing them there are so many other style of trousers out there you can wear instead from crop to flare to skinny jeans or leggings or linens. Never wear something you don’t feel confident in.Harem pants come in a variety of styles from low crutch seams that hang down to your knees – the ‘ham-

mer time’ look - great for the more adventurous of us. These are not flattering and really do make you look short in the legs. Or the most versatile and wearable style has baggy trouser legs with a cuff hem. There is a style of harem pants that suits your body shape it’s just a case of trying on different styles to see which you feel best suits. Look for them in different fabrics from tailored cottons to jersey fabrics or silks. Watch out for elasticated waists which add pounds, go for a flat front waistband, with elasticated or cuff hems as these are more flattering. They look better worn on the hips as this elongates tummy area. Loud or tie dye prints can look over whelming and very unflattering on any body shape. My favourite glamorous look for the those hot sunny lazy days by the pool or sipping cocktails with the girls would be a pair of hareem pants with baggy legs

teamed with a metallic bikini, gold bangles and gold strappy heels. Dress with style and bring out your personality through your choice of accessories. For a casual day look – wear Hareem pants with your favourite jewelled flats and a lovely satin or silk vest top and tailored jacket or denim waist coat – layering is key. For the beach or pool parties, hareems are a must. They look fabulous with your bikini and again chunky wooden or metallic bangles worn with metallic of se-quined flats perfect with your sun kissed body – team with beaded or sequined jewellery to give your outfit the edge. You could always finish off with a straw cowboy hat. There are some beautiful satin jump suits around with harem style pants which look beautiful and very glamorous; these are perfect for those summer nights out on the town especially when worn with a great pair of strappy heels, clutch bag and metallic bracelets with a sizzling sun tan.If you want to look chic and classy, keep your outfit similar shades of colour, khakis or neutrals are great. If you are larger on the bottom half then avoid them with any detail that will attract to your areas you don’t like or feel are too big – the planer the fabric, the bet-ter and at all times avoid gathering!Hareem pants are a great style of cover up, rather than a sarong or sundress, so have a go and try a pair they are so versatile and comfortable.E mail me your fashion questions or fashion dilemmas: [email protected]

The studio was literally a hive of activity with Liza working her hair and make-up magic on this month’s cover girl, the Spanish beauty Christina, a naturally gorgeous, very long-legged chica with a sparkly, bubbly personality. They were busy getting beautiful whilst chatting away regaling funny stories about past experiences and some of the best and worst shoots they have encountered. Dani then pops her head in with some more outfit options before rushing off to yet another boutique to grab some more dresses for the following shoot, the model for which has also ar-rived and is chatting with CJ while she waits for her turn in the hair & make-up chair. It is all go, go, go in here today. Ruth the photographer is busy trying to take snapshots and document the shoot in the midst of

all of us lot buzzing around doing our thing, bumping into one-another and laughing. We are all keeping busy with our relevant tasks but simultaneously manage to be chatting, sipping tea and umming and ahhing over the perfect dress for Christina and this month’s cover. We all agree on the one you can see and she looks sim-ply stunning in it. CJ, having turned her hand to painting earlier in the day by changing the colour of a chunk of the wall in her studio, got snapping and within half an hour had created the perfect ‘Très Chic’ look for June. However then Christina’s hair was re-teased and a few altera-tions made and we had another go at it, because that’s what you do to create the perfect cover! Written by Victoria Wood

Q & A By Lisa-Jayne

QI like the nautical look but don’t know what I should buy, to update my wardrobe. What do

you recommend?

AEvery spring the nautical look reinvents it-self – look for new variations on the nautical

theme. We all have a stripe t shirt in our wardrobe if not it is great key piece to invest in. this T is great with jeans or dressed up with a blazer or fitted jacket. Go for navy with cream or red stripes as an alternative to the white with navy stripes. If your bigger busted go for a v neck t shirt as this opens up and elongates your neck area, whereas a crew or boat neck style can emphasise the bust area and make your top half look too big in proportion to your bottom half. You want to create a wonderful hourglass shape showing off your sexy curves. For the person with a smaller bust, you can find gor-geous embellished t shirts especially on the shoulder

or front panel area this gives more interest to the top half always ensuring you balance out your body proportions.Vertical stripes are always a winner as they elongate the body, making anyone look taller and slimmer. If you are lucky enough to be tall and slim already then play with horizontal stripes to your advantage, cre-ating an hour glass shape. There are lovely dresses or tunics that can be worn over leggings with pumps for daytime and with a great pair of heels to take you from day to night. The width of stripe is important too, go for a nar-rower than wider stripe as the width adds extra poundsI have bought myself a lovely narrow stripe soft knitted cardigan, which will be so versatile this summer.

CHIC HEALTH

In the race to summer and the desire for the perfect beach body I joined the gym and de-cided to lose all the unwanted winter warmth I had collected. I’ve never been able to diet because I just can’t say no to food. So for me, exercise seemed to be the obvious choice. However, after 3 months of religiously going to the gym, every morning, for an hour, 4-5 times a week, I was sad to say there was little difference. I felt fitter and healthier but the weight wasn’t coming off fast enough and I couldn’t afford a personal trainer. I probably could have done with advice from Sean (per-sonal trainer and columnist for tres chic), but then ‘tres chic’ wasn’t out in March. Anyway, with my bikini body nowhere to be seen I moved onto my sofa for a lazy Sunday afternoon with my favourite magazines and newspapers. It was reading the newspaper that I came across the clean and lean diet. The first thing I noticed on the double page spread was the title ‘eat yourself slim’. I was immediately inspired so began reading carefully and learnt that the clean and lean diet isn’t a diet, but a way of living, a choice to eat healthy, not a starvation process or re-gime of cabbage soup twice a day.Instead, there is a simple philosophy behind the plan, which is to cut out the toxins we take in from processed foods, refined sugars, caffeine and wine. He mentions that a heavy concentration of toxins are low fat and diet products which shocked me even more! Es-

CHIC HEALTH

pecially when I think of the money I have spent on diet food! He explains how most people who take on a tough exercise regime but do not examine what they are put-ting into their bodies are on an up-hill battle because our bodies way of defending itself from these tox-ins is to store them in our fat depos-its. This means that when we start to burn fat our body is frantically trying to grab onto it so that the harmful toxins aren’t released into the body. When they are released, he explains that we can begin to feel sluggish, headachy and have sugar cravings. In short, everything he described was how I felt on a daily basis. Clean and lean foods on a basic level are those which are eaten as close to their natural state as pos-sible, and preferably organic. For example, fish, meat, vegetables and eggs. I find that if I read any-thing I’ve never heard of or can’t pronounce on the back of a food packet then it probably isn’t clean and lean!I have found that this way of eat-ing isn’t limiting! Especially as I’m fond of experimenting in the kitchen. I have started substituting the spaghetti in my King Prawn chilli and tomato linguini for rib-bons of courgette and carrot, and just a handful of whole-wheat pasta bows. I find this satisfies me more and I don’t get the usual sugar crav-ing afterwards so the mini mag-nums are now safe in the freezer! I’ve also started adding griddled courgette ribbons and asparagus to my salads to help bulk it out and making my own salad dressings which taste amazing compared to store bought.Breakfast is a meal I’ve always struggled with because there just isn’t the time! But now I make an omelette which consists of me chucking an egg, some spinach

and smoked salmon into a frying pan and I’ve got a delicious meal that took 2 minutes to cook and keeps me full until lunch. Also, I learnt from this diet that eggs are a key food to stop those pesky sugar cravings so now I make them an in-tegral part of every breakfast. The clean and lean diet was cre-ated and inspired by James Dui-gan, who has helped models such as Elle Macphereson stay in shape. Macphereson even claimed ‘there is nobody better in the world than James for getting a women’s body into amazing shape’. So, after read-ing a recommendation from an International model, I thought this must be worth a try! The plan is en-dorsed by nutritionist Alice Sykes, PhD and is promoted as a com-pletely flexible eating plan so you can do all or some of what James recommends. James has now published his book and it is available on Amazon for £12.99. I have already ordered my copy and can’t wait to learn more about how to start my summer with a healthy kick start without calorie counting or cutting out my favour-ite foods!

With around 500 different looks featuring ruffles this Spring/Summer you would be a fashion faux pas to ignore it, but a word of warning here fashionista’s.. Don’t be overin-dulgent, Bo Peep may have a place with couture, but it may look a little too much on the promenade! Keep basic form simple, paired sparingly with straights or tailoring, an ambiguous blazer or simple cigarette trousers. Use as an accent, a frothy blouse, a billowing skirt, or a delicious shift dress with simple accessories. Air of the side of romantic caution, and let the Summer breeze be what carries you away!

What did she do next? So readers, this is it, the first column by Angela of its

kind......I have been lost in a world of nostalgia and ru-

minations on life in Marbella recently, in a bid to pro-

vide you with a philisophical and interesting theme for

this column. Lots of memories about my bizarre expe-

riences here in la la land began to resurface to feed this

monthly critique on Costa life. However, my editor had

a specific idea about what could inspire the material for

this month. A date. A blind date. Words that scare

me. Despite my apprehension I had to be professional

and admit it was a good idea. I tried my best to not be

afraid and told myself I am a sophisticated and fully

grown woman who is used to the unexpected (it always seems to find me!)

I was somewhat cheered by the choice of venue; the

Small World Cafe..a restaurant I have wanted to visit

for a while. So far so good. When i told my friends that

I would be going there on a blind date they squealed

in the girly way that actually makes me wince and

shrieked things to the effect of ‘it could be the man of

your dreams!’ Hmmmm....i don;t think so was my wry

reply. I am a little too long in the tooth and cynical to

believe in fairy tales. Especially Costa del Sol fairy

tales. Especially blind date fairy tales.

However what transpired, despite not being the fairy

tale scenario that my friends had squealingly envi-

sioned for me, was a thoroughly enjoyable evening

and the type of evening that seems to epitomise my life

here on Costa Crazy; indulgent, enjoyable and unex-

pected. As I walked into the Small World Cafe I was

feeling apprehensive as all i knew was that I had a table

booked for 9pm and that I was meeting a total stranger.

As I walked through the front door i felt as though I had

walked out of Marbella and into New York. The setting

is modern, cool and intimate. The staff greeted me with

friendly and expectant smiles and ushered me over to a

man who introduced himself as my date. I was met with

a face and a name that seemed very familiar but i just

couldn’t quite place.....and my first impressions? Well,

they could be voiced through the words of my date him-

self as he later said ‘well i am sorry that I am not the 28

year old hunk that you were probably expecting..’ which

I wasn’t and......erm, he wasn’t.....but he was great com-

pany and proved to be one of the most interesting people

I have ever met so hunk schmunk. I was actually re-

lieved that my date was a little older and someone I could

relax with, talk to and eat in front of! In my experience

younger, adonis ‘my body is a temple’ types seem to be

addled with more ego issues and brawn than interesting

conversation and make me feel guilty to munch on more

than a lettuce leaf.

Well this evening i definitely ate more than that. And

drank quite a bit too. In fact even before we had or-

dered anything a couple of tequila shots had been sent

over to our table, courtesy of the management. Oh dear.

And they were accompanied by an orange slice covered

in cinammon rather than the usual lemon slice. More

yummy, less tart and a definite relief for the burning te-

quila sensation. Anyway, we got stuck into several of

these shots throughout the meal. Well, they were being

sent over compliments of the staff, it would’ve been rude

not to!

The conversation was in full flow well before the arrival

of the starters as I was learning that my date is a big name

photographer on the coast and has been over here since

i was just out of nappies. We know many of the same

people although he knows many more as proven by his

number of facebook friends being tenfold that of mine!

He knows many celebrities, (which he disclosed in a very

humble and not a ‘name dropping’ manner at all) and

it was very cool to learn that despite being models or

‘beautiful’ actresses some of these women suffer with

bad skin and a ‘you wouldn’t look twice’ appearance!

I don’t think I am permitted to say who but if you see

me out and about then a glass of champagne may loosen

my lips (well it’s worth a try!)

Anyway my date was defi-

nitely interesting and has lived

a full and interesting life and

career here on the coast.

So...the food. I am no AA Gill

or expert in writing sophisti-

cated restaurant critiques but

I do appreciate my delicious

food and a good ambience,

which we were certainly of-

fered. We had the prawns to

start followed by seared tuna steak and solomillo steak...

all perfectly cooked to our request and definitely tasty.

My date chose a delicious bottle of wine.......and right

now I am giving myself a mental bashing because I can’t

remember what kind....but i do know there was an exten-

sive list and i can remember that it was advised as a good

bottle to compliment the food....true!! The presentation

of all dishes was impressive, the food a good amount, not

over-facing but enough to get full up on and the service

was efficent and very friendly. So friendly in fact that

we invited our waitress to join us for a drink or two in

Tribeca afterwards, which she did where she was just as

sunny and nice to talk to! The dessert of brownie and

ice cream was heavenly and not at all ‘claggy’.....a word

used by my date and apparently a way to describe an

unsuccessful brownie. Which this was not. I am sure

AA Gill would shoot me for using the following descrip-

tion...but it was just yummy.

The whole Small World Cafe experience is one I would

recommend for an uber-cool and enjoyable meal out.

But our evening didn’t end there. We then scooched

next door to Tribeca...again i felt as though I was in

New York. This is a trendy bar full of cosmopolitan

people. It doesn’t get going until late but neither do the

in-the-know Marbella locals! After drinking a couple

of vodka, lime and sodas (i am rarely seen to be out

and about without one) I decided that I may have to

head home if I was to remember the evening sufficiently

for my column! But the fun didn’t end there....the taxi

service was unavailable so my date decided to gallantly

give me a lift to the taxi rank...on the back of his motor-

bike. Now, I don’t know why but

in the past few months i have found

myself on the back of a motorbike

no less than 3 times! Enough times

for you to suppose that i enjoy mo-

torbike riding. But no. Motorbikes

scare me. However......third time is

a charm and despite clinging on to

my date enough for him to suffer

a hernia it was quite refereshing to

whizz up to the Puento Romano

taxi rank with the wind whipping

around us and I didn’t feel scared at

all. It is quite amazing what courage a few vodka, lime

and sodas can inspire!

Safely in the taxi and on my way home I thought about

how this evening had been quite an achievement...I

had made a new and very interesting friend, enjoyed a

fabulous meal, made some more friends of the restau-

rant staff and faced my fear of pillion motorbike riding

head on.........and as I went to pay the taxi driver I saw

and remembered a gift from my date poking out of my

wallet....a ticket for the Nikki Beach White Party which

he generously donated to me! This evening had certain-

ly been interesting and column-worthy...but how could

any evening out on this colourful coast not be? So read-

ers I will continue to keep you informed of my news,

views and gossip of the upcoming weeks...and I guess

I will be seeing you all at the White party! Ask around

for Angela and we may be able to share a cheeky drink

and a gossip! Until next month.....be good and be care-

ful! Angela xxxx

treat your wood and give if a fresher look withbee’s wax

MIXING THE OLD WITH THE NEWBy Natalia Lutz

Mother of three Pernilla and her hus-band Pedro run and own an Antique and Decorating store called Tejaima, located in Urbanicacion La Cancela de la Quinta. Their charming shop is a family run business bursting with beautiful furniture, innovative lamps, and quaint knick knacks. Pedro dedi-cates his time to being the carpenter of the shop making lovely pieces of furniture out of Antique wood while Pernilla juggles the care of her daughters with running Tejaima in the mornings. Her passion for every-thing to do with antiques and interior

design comes from her mother who is also an Antique dealer and runs Anigüedades Cavon in Guadalmina. Who better to guide us through, where to find and what to do with our old pieces of furniture?

Pernilla’s Top TipsFirst of all if you’re looking to give your modern home a more original look try and mix it up a bit by using 3 or 4 Antique pieces around your house. This will auto-matically give your home a warmer and cosier feeling.

BUT where do you find these wonderful new additions?

Stating the obvious you can pass by either Pernillas shop or her mothers and buy some beautiful furnishings HOWEVER according to Pernilla the best place to start off in is your own home, take a second look at the furniture that you we’re think-ing of getting rid of and venture into your attic or store room to dust off the old and forgotten tables and chairs you’ve hidden in there.

If you don’t find anything in your house you can always go to the local “mercadil-los” which take place on Saturday morn-ings in Puerto Banus, Fungirola and Ben-havis and on Sunday in Sabanillas. You can find some great bar-gains for hand crafted furniture.

If you’re worried that some of these An-tique pieces may carry wood worm what you need to do is keep it away from your other wooden furniture! Put it in your garage or an out of the way place and let it stand on top of an old plastic curtain, leave it for a few days without moving or touching it. If after a couple of days you see a layer of dust on the plastic then un-fortunately you do have woodworm, BUT don’t despair, you can treat it. Pernilla suggests that you stay away from store brought products as they can be highly toxic; instead hire a professional from Garbi Malaga S.L. who will go to your house to treat it for you.

Once you have your piece, whether it’s made out of wood or even some sort of metal the best thing you can use to treat it

Pernilla

Page 91: TRES CHIC, July Issue 2010

91

and give if a fresher look is bee’s wax, which you can buy in La Tejaima, Anigüedades Cavon, or La Mece-dora. The Bees wax helps to keep you antiques in per-fect condition but keep in mind that before you use it on your furniture and especially if its wood, you first need to sand it down. Once that’s done you can add a thin layer of bees wax going with the flow of the grain. Make sure to use a paint brush as it allows you to get that sheer layer across. Let it dry for a day and then polish it, with either a special polishing brush, or a pair of old and broken tights, (these apparently work best!) But remember if you choose to put more layers of wax on your furniture you must always polish in-between layers, if not you’ll get a thick greasy look.

If you’re looking to paint your furniture use a “sellado-ra”, which is a sort of sealing paint. Remember to sand it first, and then paint. If it’s a piece of furniture for the inside of your home, stay away from the varnish! Instead opt for the beeswax which will give it a softer finish. If it’s for outside the varnish which gives the best results is either xyladecor or procobar, but make sure that the label also says “incoloro” and “satinado”

which means no colour and medium shine.

Once you have your love-ly home mixed in with some beautiful antique pieces, one of the most important things for you to remember according to Pernilla is light, the source of light and how you use it. Although long

lasting bulbs are of course more economical they don’t create any shade which then tends to give a flat atmos-phere to your room. Use candles or normal bulbs to play with light and shadows, giving your home a warm and cosy feeling. If you have any more questions or inquiries don’t hesi-tate to get in contact with Pernilla herself! Visit her at Tejaima, call her at: 952 79 98 63, email her at [email protected], or visit the website www.tejaima.es

When Paul is not driving a digger or indeed directing a 30 strong team on how to build the ultimate dream home, he occasionally takes time out to indulge in his other pas-sion in life. Tasting the finest food and wine that money can buy.Paul has now set himself the ulti-mate challenge; to visit 50 of the top 3 Star Michelin Restaurants. So far he has managed an impres-sive 38 in four years. Here is his account of his time spent at some of the most exceptional gastronomic (and some not so good) establish-ments worldwide.

LET’S START AT THE TOP.

“My favorite 3 star Michelin for all round food, wine, ambience and service, without question is “The Waterside Inn at Bray” I have been there many times. I used to fly over and take my daughter on Easter Sun-day. This year I took my wife and mother-in-law for Mothers Day. I sat next to Peter Jones from Dragons Den and Matt Dawson (Question of Sport Captain and Rugby player).”

“Undoubtedly the most chic was ‘Louis XV’ (Alan Ducasse) in Mo-naco. I stayed at the Hotel de Paris where the restaurant is situated, last year for five days and had one of the most memorable evenings with my

wife and daughter. We had the Gas-tronomic menu, as you should, in a 2 or 3 Michelin restaurant. The food was prepared with such finesse and precision, like a Formula1engine, nothing left to chance. (Incidentally Paul was a former professional rac-ing driver). Of all the 3 star restau-rants I have been to, their wine list was the most comprehensive. We started with Montrachet, followed by a 1982 Chateau Lafite and the dessert wine was Chateau d’Yquem. We finished our evening in The Ho-tel de Paris Bar, with the French ac-tor Jean-Paul Belmondo.”

“The best meal we experienced was at ‘PETERMANN’S KUNSTSTU-BEN’, just outside Zurich. Probably the most unassuming restaurant in the world but, without any ques-tion, one of the best restaurants for

food in the world. It had a delight-fully small room, with only 8 tables. The restaurant even organised a car to take us back to the hotel; a 1956 Cadillac limo!”“The highest/ maddest Restaurant has to be ‘Mathis Food Affairs’ St Moritz at 2486 metres on the piste, where we went to eat most days on our annual holiday. We were there to watch ‘polo on snow’ on the frozen lake in St Moritz. It’s like a setting from a James Bond film, where you sit with Billionaires.

As an example, the table next to us drunk two bottles of Petrus at €28,000 each !!!!!

On the culinary side, their Truffle pizzas start at over 150 Euros each!!

GOURMET VOYAGEPaul bramley, one of marbella’s chief property de-velopers, takes us on the ultimate gourmet voyage of discovery, sharing his dining experiences at the crème de la crème of 3 star michelin restaurants

‘Louis XV’ in Monaco

Paul with Reto Mathis, St Moritz

Page 96: TRES CHIC, July Issue 2010

96

Whilst dining, we sat on the next table to Vanisha Mittal, daughter of the top ten richest man in the world. Vanisha ´s wedding cost her father sixty million dollars!! WOW….” Incidentally, Paul has also patronized the food festival in St Moritz for the past two years. Is there no stopping this gastronomic streak?

“The furthest 3 star Restaurant is ‘Lung King Heen’ Hong Kong. I went there with my father on busi-ness and got stuck for 8 days in Hong Kong, due to the fact that I hate fly-ing and could not bring myself to get on the return flight; even though we were travelling first class. In the end, my father took me to a Chinese doc-tor and all I could remember when arriving home is waking up in Heath-row airport. Lung King Heen is not a patch on anywhere else in the world for Chinese cuisine; however if you want to try a one star Michelin In-dian restaurant closer to home, then visit Tamarind in Mayfair London; exceptional.”

“The worst 3 star Michelin restaurant was, Gordon Ramsey’s Royal Hos-pital Road, London. The food was bland, uninspiring and the service leaves a lot to be desired. For exam-ple; serving one of the courses, prior to some of us finishing the previous course. Pouring sparkling water into still water glasses on numerous oc-

casions and having a Sommelier who was no older than 23. Being employed as a Sommelier, cer-tainly requires age and experience! We had a table for 6 people and all felt that it was a dreadful evening. If I were judging, considering that I would have eaten in over 150 Michelin Star Restaurants, I would never have considered giving it 1 star, let alone 3. Unbelievable!”Now to Marbella, if you want clas-sical old style service, it would have to be the Marbella Club Grill. The veal chop is to die for and the menu remains consistently good. I am probably biased because they know me very well. The service there is second to none. However, if you want a Fusion tasting meal with a fantastic gastro-

nomic menu, then it has to be Schilo at Finca Cortesin. The first time we went there, we took a friend of ours who is a Chairman of PLC Company and eats out most days in the top res-taurants in London. He thought it was the best meal, he had ever had.Thirdly and in no particular order, ‘Calima’ in the Don Pepe Hotel (Dani Garcia) for a more Heston Blumenthal type of gastronomic menu. For example pouring nitro to make sea bass popcorn. A stunning visual and tasting menu. Great loca-tion with stunning views. Now, if you are like me, and would prefer fantastic wine and a good meal rather than fantastic food and good wine, then you must visit El Portalon on the Golden Mile, with the best wine list on the Coast. On a final note and being a resident in Marbella, there was one signifi-cant highlight during our gastro-nomic adventure; sitting in the same restaurant as King Juan Carlos in ‘Zalacain’ a two star Michelin res-taurant.”Well I think that says it all, Paul has undoubtedly dined at some of the finest restaurants throughout. How charming that his most memorable moment was being in the same es-tablishment as King Juan Carlos. He will always remain true to ‘his country’. God Bless Spain.

NIKKI BEACH, White Party

We all embraced the wind, used it like Kylie does…so all the girls dancing in the wind on the beds looked sexy as hell. As did Ana Lucia, Nikki Beach’s lovely PR.Everyone in white yet so many fashion statements made – from simple white jeans & vests with cowboy hats to sparkly diamond encrusted works of art….has that girl just got married? Nikki beach staff, all drop dead gorgeous, literally running with hugely oversized bottles of wine, champagne & vodka…cat like girls in cages…wild men bang passionately on metal makeshift drums…but all of us who have experienced the white party know this – once the fireworks light up the sky to the sound of the crowd’s whhhooooas & whheeeeees we all go crazy… sipping cold champagne suddenly seems so boring…dancing like it’s the end of the world? That’s Nikki Beach style.

Holiday is a magical word which is sure to put a smile on anybody’s face, and with holidays come ho-tels... Now if you’re looking for something a little out the ordinary, something with a little twist, keep on reading. Here on these pages I’ve chosen three gorgeous hotels

which all add to that very special vacation you have in mind.

Hotel: The MetropolitanWhere: LondonRates: €165 - €450 per night. If you’re looking for something edgy and cool The Metropolitan in London is definitely for you. The suites are full of trend-setting features, including suede uphol-stery and pear wood bathrooms, and the penthouse offers a personal assistant and butler on call. Found smack bang in the middle of Lon-don (Park Lane), it is perfectly lo-cated for those who want to enjoy the sights and sounds of London. One could say that the crowning glory of The Metropolitan is the Met bar. Embracing London’s ur-ban style the Met bar attracts Lon-don’s hippest crowd, entertaining them with an on-going rota of the

most cutting edge D.J’s around. But let’s not forget the views that this hotel has to offer. Situated on the corner of Hyde Park the buildings floor-to-ceiling win-dows offer beautiful views of the city sky line and park. The Metropolitan is also home to Nobu restaurant, which serves Japanese-Peruvian cuisine and posses a Michelin star. Just make sure to make your reservation well in advance! There’s so many things to do in London, musicals, art exhibitions, museums, shopping... If your into art definitely visit the Tate modern, right now they have a photography exhibition called “Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance and the Camera which will be on show till October. For those who love the theatre I would rec-ommend Pricilla Queen of the Desert, but only because I’m a huge fan of the film, if that’s not your cup of tea then there are plenty of other musicals to choose from. For shopaholics you’re basically in heaven, make sure to visit Selfridges on Oxford St, Dover Street Market on Dover St. Liberty on Regent St and Harvey Nichols on Knightsbridge.

The re-sort offers a wide range of activities, including all your usual water sports but as well as all that they offer things like submarine piloting, which means that you get to learn how to pilot a three passenger Triton submarine! Or “Sea trek on the sea floor” which means you put on a fancy helmet which allows you to breathe underwater while you take a stroll on the sea floor!

Now many people, who know me, were understandably somewhat scepti-cal; that is an understatement when I announced that I was setting off for a week of intense physical exercise and dare I say nutritional training, miles away from my normal day to day comfort zone of work and luxuriating in the Costa del Sol way of life. Many people know that Julia and myself throw ourselves enthusi-astically into our work of public relations and jour-nalism, but many of our meetings revolve around food and shall we say a tipple or two. As the date loomed, Julia was becom-ing like an excited puppy, however I was quite liter-ally fazed by my forthcom-ing fitness regime and was frantically trying to come up with every excuse in the book, not to attend. Un-surprisingly Julia was having none of it, despite the fact that I had a terrible virus, following a trip to the Jerez Grand Prix training day, where I got absolutely drenched, all in the name of journalism. Did I get any sympathy – no. I was promptly frog marched to the Doctor, by Julia, for antibiotics, prior to our departure two hours later. So on an extremely wet and miserable day in March, I jumped or rather begrudgingly sloped behind the wheel of Julia’s car and off we set. I have to admit, even the other side of Malaga, I was still trying to make Julia see sense to turn round and return back to civilisation. No, she still was not having any of it. So some three hours later, having stopped for a ‘cuppa’ on the way (purely for Dutch or English and Scottish courage – for Julia), we duly arrived at our destination, ‘El Molino del Conde’, a converted Anda-lucian Mill allegedly set in tranquil hills and olive groves, but due to the horrendous weather, I felt as if I was stranded in the middle of Dartmoor. However prior to arrival, my spirits lifted (slightly) as we discovered en route, that we were a mere 12 minutes (yes I had timed it) from the nearest town Villa Nueva de Tapia (where of course we could buy certain supplies should they be urgently required and I mean the liquid variety!). As soon as we had alighted from our/my comfort zone (the car) we were welcomed by Spencer Cuckney who was our Fitness Master, or in my eyes ‘The Com-mandant’, for the next 7 days. Spencer, 41, is a certified personal trainer with 20 year’s experience. Initially he worked at The David Lloyd centre for 10 years and then had his own personal training studio for five years. Over the past five years he has been running these outdoor fitness boot camps. Spencer is also a fat loss and functional training expert, mostly specialis-ing in women. He has a Masters Diploma in ‘Fitness Training Premier’ and Sports Medicine. He was personal trainer to Harry Redknapp – the

Tottenham Premiership Manager and also worked with a celebrity trainer in London who looks af-ter Kate Moss, Sophie Dahl, Ant & Dec.” Now that is impressive and, of course, not forgetting …….Annabel Milnes-Smith. I was now one of his students or should I say, on my own behalf, his latest victim! On arrival at our home from home for the next 7 days, think boarding school and that is about as close as you can get. Julia of course was still bubbling with enthusiasm; mean-while I was having a major sense of humour failure. The scene that lay before us was as follows. Ten women all sitting around a rustic kitchen table drinking cups of water and tea. Oh cripes, this was worse than I thought! We were duly introduced to them. Thank heavens they seemed a nice bunch. However this was

that’s it. I am going home now. Do you mind awfully, if I take the car?” Julia realising she had a whole bun-dle of trouble on her hands, replied, “Now come on, give it a go, just for one day. I sulked but agreed. So I then reluctantly donned my tracksuit and trainers and headed outside for the first of the gruelling fitness sessions. Now is probably the time to give readers our daily schedule. Basically it was up at 7.30am. I DO NOT DO MORNINGS, where we were presented with a smoothie. I had smuggled coffee in so downed the smoothie, whipped upstairs with a mug of boiling water (they thought I was being incredibly healthy) and had my first mornings fix of caffeine. Then it was off for a two hour hike. Not on your nelly – Julia, this is all yours. Then back for breakfast which one could say was not bad with the exception of a rather interest-ing porridge dish that was served up. It was the only dish that Julia turned down. She has had a severe loathing of this since she was a child. I was mightily surprised; after all she is Scottish). Anyway, moving swiftly on. Following the first meal of the day it was now off to fitness classes on the lawn. This involved lifting incredibly heavy large stones to strengthen the biceps. Ah ha another escape route, I could not par-ticipate, having broken my arm rather badly. Follow-ing this training session, where I was sent running up and down the lawn while the others toiled with their stones, and getting drenched once again, it was time for lunch; allegedly. The food was good, but, shall we say, nutritionally challenging. Nothing quite ap-peared as it seemed once on the table and once again, all served with water. Boy, that drink is dull. Follow-ing our somewhat meagre meal, we were given a vari-ety of activities for the afternoon, interspersed with track work. Anyway back to the extra circular activities. One of the first was mountain climbing. Now many may think that was a stroll up in the hills. Not a bit of it. Have you ever heard of El Chorro? This is one of the most famous and tough rock climbing areas in Europe. Indeed it was the backdrop for the famous train scene from the film ‘Von Ryans Express’.Well I em-braced this with great gusto, having climbed like a mountain goat when I was young. Sad-ly I was floored by this wretched virus due to inner ear problems. As soon as I attempted the first leg, all har-nessed up, I fell backwards. Rather dangerous when you are hundreds of feet up. So I handed over the baton to Julia. Incidentally by this stage our nick-names were hinge and bracket, I can’t quite think

why. Well forget mountain goat, she rapidly trans-formed into a gazelle and was the only one to reach the summit. What a feat. I was so proud of her. Even though I could not participate, but being the only jour-nalist on the team, Jose, the instructor, whispered to

me that it was a par-ticularly tough one pri-marily because they couldn’t use the begin-ner’s climb due to the rain which had swept away some of the cliff,

subsequently he had no oth-er option but to send the troops climbing up a cliff face which was for experi-enced climbers only! I have kept that quiet from the girls until now! The following day with the team still recu-

perating from their monumental climb, we geared up for our next challenge. A kayaking competi-tion. Now Julia and I are not too bad at this and thought we could win. Even though we were fast we made a

rather blond mistake which cost us the competition. This was mixing up one of the markers with a dis-carded orange bag. Oh well, you can’t win them all. Once again we were drenched from head to foot and

needless to say my virus took hold once again, but brave old me decided to soldier on, with much needed sym-pathy from my co-pilot Julia. Now as you can imagine having ten women together in a confined area with basic nutrition, no drink and a day to day ex-hausting routine, you may expect some friction. Not at all. The camaraderie was unbelievable. All the girls were in unison as to why they came to this par-

ticular boot camp. It is principally because Spencer’s is not regimented like military styled ones, where there are at least some fifty participants and people are just a number to them; during their time there, indi-viduals are yelled and cajoled on a day to day basis. Spencer’s is built around motivation and fitness, to-gether with overcoming personal, fitness and mental

difficulties. His boot camp in the UK is located in the New Forest. He works with his wife Kate, where they concentrate on the natural form of movement; bodywork, sprint intervals, sup-portive nutrition and developing the right mind set for fitness training, as opposed to machines and gimmicky gadgets. The indi-viduals themselves came from all walks of life. Here is a brief synopsis of the group and their thoughts over the week. Kate Pulka, 45, married with two children - a solicitor who runs her own practice. “The week, was all a bit of a dream, but not necessarily a bad one because I lost 4 inches and 2.5% body fat (only 35% to go, how depressing). I think he’s onto a winner with the camps. As for the food, it was delicious and nutritious and I got to really like Diana (the nu-tritionist who was on board) and was interested in learning her cooking methods, but for a big girl with a big appetite (that’s me and NOT Di-ana!!) there just didn’t seem to be enough of it! Kim Moody 45. She is an IT Director with her own com-pany who despite being fairly heavily pregnant, still wanted to take up the challenge. She attends Spen-cer’s boot camps in the UK. “It is difficult for me to comment on the exercise programme as I could not participate in many of the sessions, although having seen Spencer in action before; he was very good and motivated us. Over the food, I was sur-prised at the portions. They were somewhat on the small side.” Allyson McGurran-Hodgins, 35 married with four year old twins. She started boot camp about 20 months ago, mainly for fitness and also for a better social life. “I have had a really good week. Perhaps in hindsight, there needs to be a bit more structure to our daily routine and meal times. However overall, I have really enjoyed it, challenged myself and had a break.”Julia Mouland. – 45 married with step children. She had a small shop selling tex-tiles but found it was just too much stress... Subsequently she sold it three years ago. That is when Julia found the time to attend boot camp. “It has certainly been an interesting week. Not in a physical way but an emo-tional one (Julia Mouland had a set two with Spencer

one night). However following the fracas, the girls were rewarded with copious amounts of wine – re-

sult! Good on you Julia! Lisa Church-ill – 40. Married. Works in Mar-keting, Business Development and trouble shooting. “I liked the ac-tivities we did. The rock-climbing was brilliant. The kayaking great but I think we could have done more fitness routines rather than just hik-ing and walking every day. Hopeful-ly I have left a few pounds lighter. At the end of the day, it was an absolute blast.”Irene – 32 single. Works as a strategist in Ecommerce. “I really en-joyed the experience and the people have been great. I have come away with strength training, which I really needed. I loved the kayaking. I will be doing that again. I do feel I have achieved my per-sonal goals, although I have yet to step on

the scales. We did need a little more structure and planning.” Tracy Nadin – Flight service manager for Virgin Atlantic. Married with two step children. Aged 41. “The expectations were very different from how I originally thought it was going to be, however, I do feel I have challenged myself. I ran the hill each

morning (which in Spencer’s opinion was more like a wall).I didn’t like the rock climbing. The weather has been awful, but the food has been pretty good, although not what I would normally eat. I got out of boot camp what I wanted and now feel

much better about myself.” Ali-son Jones. 47 Married with a fourteen year old. She works with her husband running an exhibition business and edits online content for their website. “I have loved the people. We have had a really good laugh. I

haven’t enjoyed the food. Too much dried fruit. I loved the challenge of boot camp, especially going up the rock face - the first time in my life. The weather has been absolute bxxxxxxx! The ca-maraderie -fantastic. I have reached my personal goal which was not to cry when being physically and emotion-

ally challenged. I left feeling satisfied.”Rebecca Oliver 44 – Married with two children. “The girls have been fantastic. I have not laughed, for as long as

‘hey’, I was the only one to reach the summit. Not bad for a wee Scot. I enjoyed the food, with the exception of the aforementioned porridge! My co-pilot Annabel took some persuading to stay, but by day three I sneaked a look in her room and found she had finally unpacked – result! Remaining on the packing subject, track suits seemed to be the order of the day so my leathers and suede’s which I brought with me were somewhat redun-dant! I didn’t quite know what I was thinking; Finca Besaya may be, with some excellent wines. Oh well, we all have our dreams!”Finally a word from our ‘Lord and Lady Fitness Masters.“We travelled to the hills of Spain with an amazing bunch of women, who were all there for different rea-sons; weight loss, fitness, confidence building and to learn about health and fitness and make new friends – albeit a tough week, it was incredibly enjoyable and some amazing results in the terms of fitness and confi-dence, were achieved – I don’t think there was anyone who didn’t put in 100% effort and as a result reaped the rewards……….at the end of it everyone went home happy and relaxed” Spencer Cuckney The writers per-sonal note to this, “Happy and relaxed but desperate for that first cuppa!!!! Well we all deserve treats, when we have been such good girlies!!! “In the week spent, in the hills of Spain, we got to try some amazing activities such as climb-ing El Chorro and kayaking, running etc. The food was amazing – to-tally out of this world, with no artificial in-gredients or wheat or dairy, the girls achieved so much in the form of advanced fitness and weight loss…and found out a lot more about themselves!” Kate Cuckney My other personal note to Kate is “I certainly did find out more about myself. For once in my life I learnt a little bit of discipline, but Spencer must remember that yelling at me in the morning, to go running, is not the way to encourage me in fitness. Forging iron is a long lost art in many plac-es with mass-produced ironwork being far simpler and quicker to create. This artisan forger however is unstoppable in his crea-tive genius, recent focus on sculpting and his true love of art using this feisty yet ver-satile material. To meet such a humble, gen-tle being in the midst of sheets and rods of iron, heavy machinery, welding irons and anvils was not the only display of irony that my visit with Nimrod Messeg had to of-fer. Take a look at the forged iron delights, for another example, that beautifully clut-ter the Aladdin’s cave wonderland that is his workshop, showroom and office. They are dumbfounding in their yielding, curva-ceous appearance and their undulating gen-tility graciously depicts the versatility and adaptability that iron as an artistic material provides. How iron can be so aesthetically pleasing is truly awe-inspiring. Another

case in point being the juxtaposition of the fe-male form, flowers, pet-als, feathered creatures and expressive faces having been forged from this raw material having such a fierce and power-ful nature in its original state. Nimrod’s hand and eye for artistic beauty naturally and literally gives iron wings! Nimrod Messeg was born in Israel in 1970; art surrounded him at every turn. With leading Israeli painter father, Aharon Messeg, and famous poet mother, Sabina Messeg, as parents it is not surprising that he developed an artistic life for himself. Having begun his flair for crea-tivity in his father’s workshop many years ago in Israel, Nimrod has since developed a most unique and eclectic style that is hugely sought after on this coast. Having always felt like a nomadic soul our black-smith had a natural talent for moving from one place to another with no care for mate-rial things, just a keen interest in the world,

nature, culture and spiritual-ity. Having to make the decision to sign a ten-year contract on his warehouse in Marbella was an enormous decision and life change for Nimrod but he does

not regret a thing. Follow-ing the hard work he put in to building up his very suc-cessful artistic iron forged furniture and architectural ironwork business over the last eleven years, he has now given himself the wings to focus on his true artistic love of sculp-ture. When I asked him why he chooses to only work with iron, he replied that he started out with wood and stone and real-ized that, “Your options are so limited by so many things with these materials, when it comes to iron it is so versatile and flexible in its size (you can add more and more on to a piece of iron 5cm long until it ends up being a room-sized sculpture), shape pos-sibilities and textures”. Sometimes he says he begins a sculpture with an idea in his mind of how it will look (he never makes a drawing or a plan) and as he forges and sculpts the end result can become some-thing entirely different as though the piece itself decides what it will be as it is created. This is an added beauty of his work and one that truly indicates that every sculpture is entirely unique and definitely not mass pro-duced. Although he will re-make a desired piece for a client he would never guarantee that it will be identical. Messeg Design has an enormous repertoire here in Marbella and the ironwork he does has an unusual and delectable style that you can easily recognize. With works including the de-sign and manufacture of furniture, lighting supports, designer projects for commercial surfaces, architectural wrought iron work for spaces requiring intricate design detail such as banisters, doors, gates, window cages etc. Each project being designed specifically to the architectural features of its surroundings and created from start to

finish by hand in the workshop. Lately a large amount of their work has been to re-design, construct and replace architectural ironwork for the larger more expensive villas around the coast, due to them being sold off-plan and the construction compa-nies opting for mass-produced, run-of-the-mill ironwork on these stunning houses, the owners request Messeg’s touch to give such dwellings the beauty and exclusivity they deserve. Nimrod has appeared at a few art exhibitions in the last couple of years with his huge variety and range of sculptures and furniture however he is not so inter-ested in the limelight or putting his pieces on display as such, he prefers people to pass by his warehouse and take a look around there where you can get to grips with the real feeling behind his work, view the full range of his art and explore their birthplace! I strongly urge anyone to go along to take a look at his work place slash showroom, to experience this for yourself, as it is truly a haven of craftsmanship wonders. Pea And Prawn Lemon Risotto

INGREDIENTS (serves 6)600g raw prawns in shells4 tblsp olive oil2 red chillies, de seeded, half sliced and half finely chopped2 ltr fish stock1 lg onion chopped400g risotto rice2 small glasses of white wine300g fresh or frozen peas2 lemons, zest and juice

METHODPeel the prawns, reserve the head shells. Heat 1tblsp of olive oil in a sauce pan, fry the head shells with the sliced chilli until toasted and col-oured. Pour the stock and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer. Take another sauce pan and sweat the onions in 1 tblsp of oil until transparent, stir in the rice, turn over to coat all the grains, stirring until the rice starts to look transparent, pour in the wine and sim-mer until its all evaporated, now add the strained stock, a ladleful at a time, stirring until absorbed. Continue adding the stock over a low heat until the rice is nearly cooked, add the prawns and peas with the last ladleful, by the time the prawns have changed colour the rice should be al dente (a bit of bit left in the middle-not a crunch) the texture should be creamy and slightly soupy, if a spoon is drawn through it, the mark left disappears after a moment or two. The rice cooking process should take 25/30mins. Turn off the heat and stir in the chopped chilli, re-maining oil and lemon juice. Cover and leave to rest for the flavours and creami-ness to develop. To serve, give a final stir and serve in bowls topped with lemon zest.
