Problem- Electronic locks generally cost

between $70 - $400 [2].- Normal locks do not have

forced entry detection [2].- The only locks that allow

remote unlock are the more expensive versions [3][4].

- Other electronic locks do not have the ability for the user to see what phone was used to unlock the system [2].

SolutionProposed Features:- Reasonable pricing at

mid-market value, approximately $200

- Forced entry detection feature notifies the owner upon attempt

- Door entry information: Number of entries, Phone used to unlock, etc.

Practical ConstraintsSustainability : ReliabilityThe system is wired directly into the customer’s electrical system and is

therefore as reliable as the power supply. In case of power outage, the system can be powered from the backup power supply for a 24 hour period.

Practical ConstraintsHealth & SafetyThe system will notify the homeowner via SMS if a forced entry is

attempted. The user will also be able to secure area with cell phone via SMS.

Name DescriptionWirelessCommunication

The device must be able to communicate with the user via Short Message Service (SMS), allowing the user to lock/unlock and to notify the user if the door has been locked or unlocked.

Power Supply The Smart Lock Security system must be powered by a 120VAC source. A backup battery with a current range of up to 3A is required to power the device in the case of a power outage.

Alternative Communication

The device must provide an additional method of access and system configuration at the physical location of the device.

Display The LCD screen must display the correct information to the user. Some of the required information will be a menu with multiple options and further instructions based on user’s decisions.

Forced Entry Detection

The device must be able to detect unauthorized entry when the solenoid is in the lock position.

Approach :

Microcontroller

SelectionName Pros ConsPIC24H • More experience

• Based on C• Already have several• Inexpensive $2.63

• Longer set up time• 21 I/O pins• No premade modules

ArduinoADK R3

• A lot of premade modules• 54 Digital I/O pins• Has its own Integrated Development

Environment (IDE)• Based of C/C++• Very little setup

• More expensive $62.99• No previous experience

Approach :

Wireless Communic

ationName Pros ConsGSM

Module• Compatibility with more cellphones• Requires little user setup and

maintenance• Lower dependency of external

systems

• Reoccurring service cost • Require cellular signal

Wireless Internet Module

• No reoccurring cost• Variety of uses

• Difficult user setup• A lot of potential implementation

issues• Large dependency of external

systems
