Hi! My name is Suzy and I was rescued from a shelter. I am a 6-8 year old of dubious parentage but I am extremely affectionate and well mannered. I love my new home; everyone is so friendly. I was a mess when my new companion met me but my groomer and vet took good care of my health and appearance. I love my new family and wish every dog at the shelter could find a home.

Inexpensive activities the whole family can enjoy
Family-friendly activities provide great opportunities for parents to strengthen the bonds they have with their children. But finding affordable, fun events the whole family can enjoy can sometimes prove challenging for budget-conscious parents.
Few families can make it through a month without developing and adhering to a household budget. But even if money is tight, there are a host of affordable activities families can enjoy together.
Hiking
One of the best things about the great outdoors is that it’s often free to enjoy. Research local parks to find ones that offer age-appropriate hiking trails. Parents with young children should look for parks that offer more relaxing hikes with well-established trails that do not require any difficult climbing. If the kids are a little older, parks with more challenging, less-developed trails may suffice. Prepare lunches at home and enjoy a family picnic in the park. Many parks do not charge entrance fees, and packing your own lunches will save on meals. The only cost you might be on the hook for is the fuel it takes to get from home to the great outdoors.
Bowling
While bowling is not free, bowling remains a relatively inexpensive and family-friendly activity. Bowling alleys may
offer discounted rates for children and lower rates during off-peak hours. Seniors may also be eligible for discounts, so bring grandma and grandpa along as well. Bumper bowling makes it possible for toddlers to join in the fun, too, so don’t be discouraged from bowling if your children are closer to preschool age than high school age.
Festivals
Many communities host weekend festivals that offer various family-friendly activities. These festivals may focus on a particular town or city’s cultural history or offer wider appeal, such as an apple festival or a film festival for kids. These festivals tend to cater to families, offering games and possibly even rides kids will love. Adults, too, can enjoy such gatherings, as festivals often invite local restaurants and food and beverage merchants to set up booths and peddle their wares to hungry festival goers.
Volunteering
Volunteering provides a unique way for parents to bond with their children while instilling a sense of community responsibility in their youngsters. Volunteering does not cost a dime, and parents can choose activities they feel will teach kids while simultaneously providing an activity they can enjoy. For example, local beach or park cleanup programs can teach kids about the importance of protecting the environment while also allowing them to enjoy the great outdoors.
Many communities offer a wealth of affordable family-friendly activities the whole family can enjoy.

C-C community, families and students support Unified Basketball
The Unified Sports® program is becoming an integral part of school athletics all over Monroe County, but the impact it has had in the Churchville-Chili community is remarkable. This is the school district’s second year of fielding their “Dream Team,” a single basketball team composed of athletes and partners, with and without intellectual disabilities. This year’s C-C team is unique in that its teammates include four pairs of siblings, along with a volunteer assistant coach who also happens to be the mother of two of the players.
There are 30 members on the Churchville-Chili team: seven athletes (one player stays on the sidelines due to a medical condition, but is the team’s biggest advocate), 17 playing partners and six ambassadors (partners who are unable to compete, but who help behind the scenes). Three of the athletes who live in the district attend the School of the Holy Childhood, bringing more of the community into the Unified environment. The sibling pairs are: • James and Jenna Creighton (Mom Pam
Creighton is the team’s volunteer assistant coach)
• Nick and Samantha Taylor • Jake and Carley Murphy • Rebecca and Rachel Czoglosz
“Unified is about so much more than competition,” said Youth Activation Committee Advisor Mary Pat Dewey. “It’s all about family and community. The experience builds lasting relationships and creates an atmosphere where everyone is included. We are so lucky to have students who are committed, who advocate for the program. They get all the credit for the growth and success of Unified here.”
Coach Greg Kincaid, a physical education teacher at Chestnut Ridge Elementary School, is responsible for much of the team’s success, making sure that each
participant has “meaningful involvement.” Positive energy abounds at every game; spontaneous dancing among competitors has sometimes broken out after a game. “We have many special moments,” said Dewey. “Sometimes we don’t remember the score, but we remember those moments.”
“Every athlete and partner from last year’s team who could come back, did come back,” she added. “All kinds of kids have volunteered to be partners. I have heard from many parents who say that the growth they have seen in their children has been amazing. The selflessness and compassion partners are learning have changed their lives as well as the lives of our athletes.”
In the Monroe County Athletic League, Unified Sports is a partnership between Section V Athletics, the NYS Public High School Athletics Association, and Special Olympics. Churchville-Chili’s team has grown from 15 members in 2015; driven mainly by the work and advocacy of student partners. The program is supported by the school district, parents, and the community-at-large, with about 200 + enthusiastic fans attending every home game.
Athletes and partners prepared to hit the court at the opening game against Spencerport.

Treasure Hunting Safety Tips For The Savvy Yard Sale Shopper
Second-hand items, especially electronics, building supplies, appliances and helmets, may carry certain risks if damaged or used. If you are planning on reselling consumer items, check the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Web site for a guide on things that can and cannot be sold, and for product recalls. CSA Group, a leading certification and testing organization, offers these safety tips for yard sale shoppers.

Recently a company hired by our local gas and electric company did routine tree trimming in our neighborhood. Soon after the work was done we noticed that our landline phone service was out. The phone company required 24 hours of weekday notice for scheduling repairs, and our report came in on a Friday, service wasn’t restored until the following Monday. Fortunately we had cell phones to use during the down time. But if this was our only phone service during an emergency I hate to think about what might have happened. While many households don’t have landlines anymore a situation like this still could happen to an elderly friend or relative. Notification is mailed out when this type of work is scheduled. Keep that paperwork and notify the gas and electric
company about any damage that results from it.
Recently I’ve observed a trend occurring in my mobile home park. This trend has to do with the increasing number of “service dogs” living in our park. I’m well aware of those who require the assistance of legitimate service dogs in daily life. Life would be difficult for you without these helpful furry friends. I’m referring to those who go online for a fee and buy a registration to “certify” their beloved pet as a “service dog” to keep them in our currently “dog free” park. I love dogs, but rules are rules--- for some, but not all.
Sometime last Friday evening or early Saturday morning someone took a solar cat & owl as well as a spotlight from my front flower bed. The owl was a mother’s day gift from my kids. The cat I had for some time and is not replaceable. The spot- light was for the flag hanging on my house to illuminate it at night. I don’t understand what is happening to this world we live in, especially in light of recent events as well as past ones.
Our town looked so beautiful on Memorial Day with all the flags placed in people’s yards by The Lions Club. Thank you to the volunteers who put up and take down the flags on every holiday.

Cheers to the 140 plus volunteers who made the recent Free Smile Day a huge success! 84 people gladly received free dental treatment worth in excess of $22,000! Area dentists, hygienists and dental personnel provided services including cleanings, X-rays, fillings and extractions. The entire day was supported by area businesses, donating food and supplies to make this day completely free! Our generous dental community partnered with our generous business community to bless so many people! A HUGE THANK YOU to all! Smiles were everywhere that day! We are looking forward to next year’s Free Smile Day! Mark it on your calendars: May 20, 2017.
To the officer who saw
past my initial reaction and was able to sit with me and make a connection so that I could calm down, I want to share how extremely thankful I am that you were there in a time of great stress! In this day and age when we are constantly finding faults, I am so thankful to celebrate your outstanding compassion and heart! You changed many of my perceptions! Thank you for one of the most amazing learning experiences I have had in some time.

Did you know ?
Fireflies are often seen lighting up the night sky on w arm evenings. They are particularly abundant during the summer months. One reason that fireflies glow is to attract mates. M ales w ill flash, and females w il l respond to mates they find interesting. Fireflies also may glow to avoid predators. The luc iferase enzyme in fi refly cells causes a chemical reaction that stimulates light, a phenomenon called bioluminescence. Fireflies are filled w ith luc ibufagins, a poor-tasting chemical that turns off predators from attacking the blinking bug. Some fireflies cannot light up at all and use pheromones to attract mates. Fireflies can be fun to catch and releas e and also benefic ial to have around. In the larval stage, fireflies w ill eat destructive insects. Adult firefl ies may feed on nectar and could help to pollinate plants. Despite their name, fireflies aren’t really flies. They a c tually are a type of beetle. Fireflies are difficult to spot during the day because they’re often resting on leaves or plants. It’s only at night w hen their brilliant light show comes alive.

Tips for a Healthier Heart (Family Features) The message that a healthy lifestyle helps protect your heart isn’t new. If
you’d like to do more to take care of your heart, here are 10 w ays technology can make that easier.
Take Care of Your Teeth. Research suggests that there may be a link betw een periodontal disease and heart disease. Go
online and check the American Dental Association’s database at w w w.ADA.org to find oral health care products that
have the ADA seal of approval. At the ADA w ebsite, you can also w atch videos on a variety of oral he alth care topics.
Keep Tabs on Your Blood Pressure. The M ayo Clinic recommends you monitor your blood pressure at home and visit
your doctor regularly. W ith the iHealth Blood Pressure Dock, (w w w.ihealth99.com), you can accurately measure your
blood pressure, track your readings over time, and share that information w ith healthcare providers, friends and family
members. The Dock comes w ith a blood pressure arm cuff and doubles as a charging station for your iP od touch, iPhone
and iPad. The companion iHealth app is available for free.
6. Reduce Stress. Try a portable biofeedback device, like the StressEraser, to help you relax by synchronizing your
breathing and your heart rate. If having too much on your plate and too many interruptions causes yo u stress, try Quiet
Hours. It lets you shut dow n your computer’s communication apps, like instant messaging, for a speci fied period of time.
Milk Your Buck for All It’s
Worth (Family Features) Eating w ell doesn’t have to mean spending a lot. In fact, there are many w ays to eat the foods that make you look and feel your best w ithout hurting your pocketbook. For example, penny for penny, ounce for ounce, milk packs more nutritional value than just about any other beverage you can buy.
Protein: From building lean musc le to keeping bones healthy, there’s good reason to add protein to the shopping cart. Protein, espec ially in the AM , helps to keep you full and satisfied, making it easier to stick to a healthy eating plan. Not all protein sources are c reated equal so be sure to opt for a complete protein - like the protein in milk. Each eight ounce glass of milk contains eight grams of high-quality protein - that’s more than in an egg!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Vision Loss May Cause Hallucinations DEAR DR. ROACH: When I lost the vision in my eye in an accident, I had Charles Bonnet syndrome hallucinations. I am 80 years old, and I went completely blind in one eye. There were patterns that I saw whenever my eye was unfocused, which pretty much obscured everything. I saw complicated figures like very bright TV. I have read Oliver Sacks’ explanation in his latest book, called “Hallucinations.” What I viewed is exactly how he described CBS. Seven months later, I am still having hallucinations, but they are much subdued and not very interesting. I think it is gradually disappearing.
What concerns me is that none of the hospital personnel knew of the syndrome. The best that was offered was that it was from a bladder infection, which I did not think I had. I imagine that there are a lot of old blind folks who think they are crazy, and there is no one to tell them otherwise. I am hoping you might write an explanation for all of us who have failing eyesight and no explanation for what ails us. I had so many interesting visions, and since I knew it was not real, I rather enjoyed it. -- L.R.
ANSWER: I can’t criticize the doctors at your hospital too much, since I had never heard about this type of hallucination before your letter. In fact, a brief survey of some colleagues, with hundreds of years’ worth of clinical experience, showed me that many of us, unlike Dr. Sacks, had never heard of this syndrome, so I am glad to be able to bring it up.
Charles Bonnet syndrome, also called visual release hallucinations, occur in people who are losing or have lost vision. It does seem to be more common in the elderly, but it has been reported in children. Most people who have had these hallucinations do not bring it up to their doctor, probably because they fear being labeled as having a psychiatric disease. It is thought to happen due to the firing of nerve cells in areas of the brain that process vision when they are deprived of visual input from the optic nerve.
There are treatments available, including moving the eyes rapidly back and forth, which often can stop the hallucinations if they are bothersome. There are also medications to stop them in people who don’t enjoy them the way you have.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: A dear friend of mine has been diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica and is being treated with prednisone. Can you give me any information about this illness? -- G.O.
ANSWER: Polymyalgia rheumatica is a common illness, almost always found in people over 50. It causes pain and stiffness, especially in the arms and shoulders, and especially in the morning. It responds very well to low to moderate doses (10-20 mg) of prednisone. The prednisone is continued usually for one to two years.
PMR often is associated with a more serious condition, temporal (or giant cell) arteritis. Any symptoms of vision loss need to be evaluated immediately, since permanent blindness can result.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

stress, but they also might be used to improve circulation and
increase relaxation, both of which can contribute to their patients’
long-term health. The BLS projects the job outlook for massage

there figures to be an array of opportunities available to men and
women interested in pursuing massage therapy. Such people
