Our Advertisers

W ith August being one of the hottest months of the

year, we would like to remind everyone of the dan-

gers in leaving your pets inside a parked car. It can

take only minutes for the temperature to soar to a point that would

be dangerous or even fatal to your pet. Most people have good

intentions when bringing their pets along for a ride, but even on a

70-degree day, the temperature can rise to a dangerous level inside

a parked car. Plan your trips carefully if taking your pets along

for the ride. If you will have to leave them unattended in the car,

even for only a few minutes, it is best to leave them at home.

If you have adopted a pet from a shelter or rescue group, or if

you have rescued an abandoned pet, please send us your story to

share with our readers. Success stories are heartwarming and can

even encourage others to adopt. You can find our contact infor-

mation online at www.TriadHappyTails.com.

If you think you might be interested in fostering for a local

animal shelter or rescue organization, please be sure to read the

article on page 42 of this issue. As Becky Gering of Carolina

Basset Hound Rescue tells us, “Fostering literally saves lives

because it creates an open spot at a shelter or rescue.” Read

about the benefits and who knows. . .you might just decide that

fostering is for you!

Once again, we would like to give a big thanks to all of our

advertisers. We have listed each one below. Please take a minute

to check out who they are and patronize them whenever pos-

sible. Without these businesses, Triad Happy Tails would not be

possible. Some of them are in a pet-related industry and some

are not, but ALL are responsible for boosting animal adoptions in

our area.

Have a safe and wonderful August!

We have always tried

to think outside the

box when it comes

to fundraising.

Our organization,

the Animal Rescue & Foster Program

(ARFP), is quickly approaching 20 years

old. We held a golf tournament for 11

years, have held a book sale for 12 years,

have held a purse sale for 4 years and,

for the first time ever, will hold a denim

sale on August 20th, 2011. We had heard

about Golden Antiques and Treasures

and decided to investigate and see if a

partnership could be a winning situation

for ARFP.

Golden Antiques & Treasures,

located at 4537 Highway 220 North in

Summerfield, was opened in November

of 2009 by Kevin and Wendy Golden.

It is 24,000 square feet of antiques,

furniture, artwork, vintage décor,

clothing, photography and much more.

The building is divided up into over 70

booths and is open seven days a week

and often holds community events with

wine tastings and live music. On any

given day you will see a plethora of

vendors moving new things into their

booths to “freshen” up their booth’s

look. One of the things that was most

appealing to us was their “Animal

Friendly” signs hung at the entrance. It

was welcoming to roam the aisles and

see people with their well behaved pets.

After talking with Golden Antiques,

ARFP decided to take a leap of faith

and open a booth. We began seeking

donations from our supporters. Between

Facebook and word of mouth, before

we knew it, donations were coming

in. ARFP received furniture, pictures,

by Sharon Gray

Page 9: Triad Happy Tails Magazine Aug.11

and glassware, and soon had enough

donations to fill the booth.

With enough donations to fill our booth,

we began thinking about what to call the

booth! We asked ARFP volunteers for

suggestions and even ran a contest on

Facebook. The winning name deemed

most fitting was The Shabby Paw.

Quickly, Booth #43 became a home

and on June 1st, 2011, ARFP’s booth, The

Shabby Paw, came to life. The Shabby

Paw sells collars, leashes, dog and cat

toys, in addition to furniture, wall art

and dishes. It has been very exciting to

see something like this benefit homeless

animals. 100% of our sales are put

into ARFP’s medical fund to help

homeless animals.

One of the unexpected things that ARFP

has found in Golden Antiques is a family

of animal lovers much like ourselves. We

recently began holding adoption events at

Golden Antiques on the second Saturday

of each month. Vendors as well as

employees are almost as happy as we are

when we have a successful adoption.

You can find cute puppies and dogs for

adoption at Golden Antiques & Treasures

on Hwy 220 North the second Saturday

of every month from 11am-2pm. While

you’re there, please check out The Shabby

Paw and see what goodies you can find!

Golden Antiques & Treasures is open

Monday through Thursday from 10am-

6pm, Friday and Saturday from 9am-7pm,

and on Sunday from 1-6pm.

Fundraising is fun when you think

outside the box!

Animal rescue & Foster ProgramPlease call to adopt us!

Sienna loves to play

chase and hide and seek with

her friends at ARFP’s adop-

tion center where she resides.

Sienna was born on 1/7/11,

is spayed, and up to date on

her shots. Sienna is very cat

friendly and would love for her

forever home to have another

feline to play with. Sienna is

also just fine with dogs and

will sometimes try to play with the puppies at the adoption center.

We call Sienna a Torbi-Tabby because of her coloring. She thinks

that she is beautiful and so do we. Looking for some positive energy

for your family? Sienna might be your girl!

Call 574-9600 to meet Sienna. n

Tate was the runt in his

litter of three, but there is no

stopping this little guy. He

loves to explore in the back-

yard and always has time to

stop and watch a butterfly

or listen to a bird sing. Tate

loves a good game of chase.

At night you can catch Tate

curled up on the couch

watching his favorite TV

shows and enjoying a good bone. Tate would love nothing more than

to make your heart smile. This precious Terrier/Aussie mix was born

on April 14th. His mom was a 20 lb Terrier mix and Tate and his two

siblings had to be delivered via C-section. His dad was an Aussie mix.

Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information on Tate. n

Dolly is one of five pup-

pies that were rescued just

in time! Their mother was

chained out in the hot sun on

one of those 95 degree days

and all five puppies almost

died from the heat. Born

around 4/30/11, Dolly is

now looking for her forever

home. It is estimated that

she will be a medium size

dog, not too big and not too

small. She is an easy puppy

that is being crate trained and house trained and she is catching on

quite quickly. Dolly is truly a doll that will make any house a home!

Call ARFP at 574-9600 to meet Dolly. n

Huck (Huckleberry) is

a cute BLUE kitty. Well,

he is really white, however

for the 4th of July some-

one thought it would be

fun to dye a white cat blue,

hence Huck! Yep, he is

blue all over! Drop by the

Next Step Adoption Center

to meet him if you don’t

believe it! 705 Milner

Drive in Greensboro -

Home of the Blue Cat. Baby Huck is 4 months old and full of him-

self. He was rescued and then dropped off at Summerfield Veterinary

Hospital who in turn called us and the rest is history.

Call 574-9600 for more information. n

Kent. Meet Bad Boy

Kent...and we say that with

lots of affection. Kent was res-

cued by a very nice lady who

proceeded to name him after

her ex-husband...not sure what

that was all about. She could

not keep him in her apartment

so she sought out ARFP. Here

are the things that make us love Kent so much, and you will too, he is

inquisitive, nosey, smart, beautiful, cute, and very entertaining. Kent

is always into something but admits to nothing! Ever had a kid like

that? That’s our bad boy Kent. Kent loves other cats and would prefer

a home with a feline companion to play with. Kent just turned 1 year

old and hopes to find his forever home soon.

Call 574-9600 to adopt Kent. n

Cain came to

ARFP after he

and his 5 siblings

were rescued. He

is such a sweet

puppy who loves

to play with other

dogs and toys!

Cain is a Schnau-

zer mix who was

born on 5/8/11.

Q

Brooke Schwabenton, DVM Ask the Vet

Fleas and Ticks -

Dr. Brooke is a Greensboro native and works at Sedgefield

Animal Hospital and Dental Center. A graduate of NC State,

she has been practicing veterinary medicine for over nine

years. Dr. Brooke enjoys working closely with pet owners

to provide all of her patients with the best quality of life and

medical care.

My pet has fleas and/or ticks, what can I do?

The first thing to do is to look at what preventive care you are

currently using to treat your pet. Are you using the correct and

best product for your pet? Where did you purchase it? Are you

treating ALL of the pets in your household? Are you using a

monthly preventative EVERY single month? Do your pets swim

or get bathed often? Do your pets come into contact with other

pets at daycare, the groomers, around the neighborhood, etc.?

Do you have any wildlife in your yard? All of these questions

and more must be addressed when deciding which product is

best. With so many options available today the confusion is ever

so great. The best piece of advice I can give is to always talk to

your veterinarian first before trying any flea/tick prevention. Not

all preventatives work the same way and there is not one single

product that is right for everyone. Is it safe to get my pet’s flea or tick products from the big discount store or online?

My honest answer is I don’t know! As a veterinarian, I can tell

you exactly where all of the products that we sell come from, who

manufactures it, what the known side effects are, how it has been

stored and we can answer any of the questions you may have about

our products. Products purchased either online or from other sourc-

es can have many variables. There is no guarantee that products

purchased online are not counterfeit, expired, or have been properly

manufactured and stored. The FDA has published a wonderful

handout titled “Online Pet Pharmacies and Protecting Yourself and

Your Pet”! We have linked this article to our website which is avail-

able at www.sedgefieldvet.com under our “links” page.

Is my pet’s ‘generic’ Fipronil (or Frontline®) product the same thing as what I get at the vet?

The answer is no, it is NOT the same! We do not recommend

these “generic” products that claim to be, “The same as Front-

line Plus®”. Though these products may have the same active

ingredient of Fipronil, the concentration is different. Even more

important, these products do not use the same carrier ingredients

that allow the product to be absorbed into the oil glands to make

the product work. Nor do these products contain the ingredients

that kill flea eggs and larva. Therefore, 16 days later the eggs will

hatch and you will have a much worse problem on your hands.

The biggest reason why I don’t recommend these “generic”

products is because of the reactions! The generics can have more

frequent and much worse reactions. In conclusion, your veterinar-

ian is your best and most reliable source for questions and when

your pet needs any medications or preventatives.

Leah was turned into the shelter

as a stray, but she had an ear notch.

This ear notch showed that at some

point in her life, she had been trapped

and had been spayed at FCAP’s Spay

Day Clinic. The shelter was gracious

enough to let FCAP take her and

put her up for adoption. She is one

lucky girl! Leah was very frightened

at first, but she is turning into an

affectionate cat. She climbs into her

caregiver’s lap, makes biscuits and

purrs. She does not like other cats, so she would only be placed in a

single cat household. She is absolutley gorgeous. She is part Siamese

and has the most beautiful blue eyes and stunning markings.

Call 378-0878 to adopt Leah. n

Zelda is a three year old Torbie. She

was adopted to a family, but their child

has become allergic to Zelda. Reluc-

tantly, they are going to have to find her

a new home. They are fostering her until

she is adopted, showing you how much

they love this beautiful girl they call

Samantha. Zelda is very affectionate and

loves to be cuddled, petted and carried

around. She loves napping in a sunny window, on a comfy blanket

or in your lap! She loves dashing around the house, playing with her

toys and looking out windows. She’s great around kids - shy at first

around new people until she gets to know you and then she’ll meow

for you to pick her up! Zelda is up to date on vaccinations, spayed,

microchipped, FeLV/FIV negative, as well as DECLAWED.

Call 378-0878 to adopt Zelda. n

Pearl was just

returned from her

adopted home after

three years with

her family. She

is a very beautiful

silver tabby with

striking green eyes

and the softest fur.

Pearl will run up

to you with her tail

straight up to be

scratched on the

head and neck. Won’t you make this “pearl” your very own jewel?

Please call 378-0878 if you would like to make Pearl your newest family

member. n

Connor was surrendered by his own-

er to FCAP. He was adopted to a couple who

returned him due to him having issues with

one of their other cats. He does fine with

other cats at his foster home, so it must have

just been this one cat that did not get along.

Connor loves to hang out with you and he’ll

even climb into your lap for some cuddle

time and maybe a snooze. This affectionate

boy would like to find a real furever home

this time ‘round. Connor is an Orange Tabby,

but he has a dark gray tint to his coat, like he’s been hanging out in

a sootie fireplace. Very different looking boy! He’s currently being

showcased at Petsmart on Bridford Pkwy in Greensboro. Stop by and

see this handsome kitty. Connor is up-to-date on all shots.

Call 378-0878 for more information. n

Midnight was trapped as a

3 month old kitten, along with his

brother. He was living in a colony of

feral cats at a restaurant. He was very

shy at first, but he has turned into Mr.

Personality and Mr. Social Butterfly!!

He is in constant motion and would

make a great playmate for another

young cat. He gets along with everyone

and has met no strangers. This gorgeous

cat looks like he has been polished! Come and meet this stunning

young cat at Petsmart on Bridford Parkway in Greensboro, where he

is being showcased at the moment. Midnight is neutered, FeLV/FIV

negative, microchipped and has all of his shots. He is ready for his

forever home, so come and adopt this special boy!

Call 378-0878 to give Midnight his forever home. n

Misty. NO…that is

not an optical illusion,

Misty is a big girl, she

has a big purrsonality too.

She loves to talk when

she is being petted. Misty

was rescued when she

was a kitten. Her mother

was part of a group of

ferals living at a trailer

park. She is currently

being showcased at Petsmart on Bridford Parkway in Greensboro.

Stop by and meet this gorgeous girl. Her markings on her face

are just amazing!! Misty is up-to-date on her shots, spayed, micro-

chipped and negative for FeL/FIV.

for almost 2 years for the right family

to come along. He is a smart, eager to

please lab mix who weighs about 55 lbs.

Midnight is a little over 2 years old and

has spent most of his life at our rescue

facility. Throughout the whole process he has kept his spirits up,

waiting patiently for his time to come. He walked in the human race

and made a lot of friends. He even was adopted and did wonderfully

until the other dog decided she did not want him there. We were told

he was a perfect gentleman on his short stay. The family said to tell

anyone interested that he is a great dog!

Melvin and his brother,

Herman, were found aban-

doned at a local gas station. We

immediately took them to our

veterinarian and discovered they

probably hadn’t had access to

food and water for several days.

Their stomachs were full of sand

and dirt from them trying to eat whatever they could find on their own.

It only took Melvin a few hours to understand that we were the good

guys and his “purr-motor” hasn’t stopped since! Melvin is the perfect

kitten; he loves to play but equally loves to cuddle in your lap. He has

had his first kitten vaccines and tested negative for Feline Leukemia

and FIV and will be neutered before going to his forever home.

Sylvia came to Red Dog Farm after

being found in a storm drain. She was

starving when she was found but is now

slowly putting on weight and eats great!

She loves to play with her new toys and

especially enjoys playing and chasing her

foster Mom’s older cat. She is quite the

social bug and loves to greet new people.

When she is not busy playing and be-

ing a kitten she can be found snoozing on the couch or watching TV.

Her foster mom says if she had to pick one word to describe Sylvia it

would be “Awesome”, she’s just that, one awesome kitten! She has had

her first kitten vaccines and tested negative for Feline Leukemia and

FIV and will be spayed before going to her forever home.

Myrtle came to Red Dog

Farm Animal Rescue Network

from the Wilkes County Humane

Society because she had been

found as a stray and they had

nowhere suitable to house a pig.

Myrtle appears to be less than a

year old. She is very shy but is

slowly warming up to humans.

She enjoys spending her days

interacting with Otis and Agnes

and learning that life for a pig

isn’t always bad. Myrtle has been

vaccinated against rabies.

For more information on Myrtle and adopting farm animals please

visit www.reddogfarm.com! n

Otis & Agnes are lit-

termates and came to us together,

so we would love for them to be

adopted together. They are very

friendly and well socialized. They

weigh around 60 - 75 lbs each, so

they are probably going to be 90 -

100 lbs each when full grown. Otis

has been castrated. Agnes’s sur-

rendering owner said that she had

been spayed, but we don’t know for sure. This cute pair and Myrtle are

currently sharing a stall and paddock and they all get along quite well,

so we would love to see them stay together if someone had room for a

small group of pigs. Each pig has received a rabies vaccine.

mals please visit www.reddogfarm.com! n

feed him since he was two days

old. Unfortunately, she is no lon-

ger able to keep him because of an

unforeseen family situation. Spike

weighs about ten pounds and is

just a sweet cuddle bug. He enjoys

getting doted on by everyone he

meets. He does well with other

dogs, cats, and people. Spike loves to go everywhere you go and even

enjoys going to local pet friendly restaurants with his foster Mom.

Oliver. Meet Oliver! He’s

a laid back Mastiff mix who loves

sprawling out on his doggy bed

and is usually the last canine

to “rise and shine” in his foster

home. Oliver loves belly rubs and

any other attention he can get. He

is a smart boy and is very respon-

sive to training. He loves playing

with the other dogs in his foster

home and would probably do best

with dogs his size (approximately

75 lbs) to play with. Oliver is

ready and patiently waiting to become a part of someone’s life again.

He hopes to see you at an adoption fair soon...

Call 768-7387 to meet Oliver. n

Terri is a domestic

shorthair female with a

soft gray nose and gray and

white fur. She loves to play

tag and “catch me if you

can” with her siblings. Terri

is developing her skills in

soccer, practicing hard each

day with her plastic balls

and learning to defend the

goal against the other play-

ers. Her beautiful face, how-

ever, would melt the heart of

everyone who sees her.

Call 768-7387 if you would

like to adopt Terri. n

Tasha is a

black domestic

shorthair cat

about seven

years old. She

was surren-

dered to AARF

by her owner.

Her front feet

have been

declawed. She

has been spayed

and checked

out as a healthy,

mature cat. Tasha is ready to join your family.

Call 768-7387 to find out more about Tasha. n

Flip. Meet Flip! He is a

2 year old Hound mix. Flip is

waiting for someone patient to

come along, someone who will

spend the time getting to know

him so that they can see what a

truly special boy he is. Once Flip

gets to know you, he is a total

sweetheart! He loves to play

and go for walks but also loves

watching TV and being near his

people. Most people don’t wait

long enough to see that side of

him, though. If you think that you could provide a very special and

loving home for this boy, please come visit us at an adoption fair.

Call 768-7387 to find out more about Flip. n

Laura is a black

and white mustachioed

domestic shorthair

kitten. Her exact age

is unknown, but she’s

probably less than a

year old. She is a sweet,

loving, and calm little

girl. An AARF volunteer

was called after she was

found laying stunned,

scraped and bruised in

the road after being tossed from a moving car. This is a survivor kit-

ten and certainly deserves a loving forever home.

Can you offer Laura the loving home she deserves? If so, please call

768-7387 to find out more. n

Luka. Meet Luka! He is a 1.5

year old Terrier mix. Luka is a cute

little guy, weighing in at only 20 lbs.

He’s mostly black with a few small

brown markings. Luka gets along

well with everyone he meets. He likes

to play but also has very nice house

manners. Luka may be a little dog,

but he has a lot of love to give. He

would do well in a home where he

would get a lot of attention as he just

loves to be around his people. Stop

by an adoption fair soon to meet this

charming little boy in person!

Call 768-7387 for more information

about Luka. n

Delilah. This

is Delilah. Bless her

little heart. She is

10 years old and has

had a rough year.

Both of her elderly

owners went into

a nursing home on

the same day and

they could not bring

Delilah with them.

Fortunately, Sheets

Pet Clinic took her

in. Delilah is extremely beautiful with her medium length hair

and gorgeous calico markings. She is a bit shy at first, but is very

sweet once she gets to know you. She is in very good health and

has been spayed, microchipped, tested and is current on vaccines.

She is very tidy with her litterbox, too. She just wants a home

again with loving patient people... Could you be that home? Come

by Sheets Pet Clinic and adopt Delilah for only $75. Or call

Harrison. Hi. I’m

Harrison. I’m a sweet cat,

only 2 years old, who is

hoping for a loving family.

I absolutely love getting

brushed daily, so I hope

my new owner will give

me this luxury. I am super

affectionate and love to rub

my fluffy self against your

leg. I hope you’ll give me

the chance to be a wonder-

ful 4-legged addition to

your home and your family.

If you would like to find out more about me, call 721-1303 and they

will tell you everything you want to know about me. n

Tobie. Hi, I’m

Tobie! I’m only 1

year old. Don’t you

think I’m handsome?

I am very friendly

and sweet, and love

to play! I’ve been

living with my foster

mommy, who took

me in as a stray and

got me healthy, and

now I’m here to find

my forever home. I

am a very affectionate, talkative kitty and would make a wonderful

companion for a loving person or family.

If you think I am the cat for you, please call 721-1303. n

Mellow. Hi, I’m

Mellow! I live up to

my name and am a

pretty relaxed dog,

unless there’s a squirrel

around! I am 8 months

old, house broken, crate

trained, and walk great

on a leash! I am shy at

first around new people,

but I warm up quickly,

especially when a belly rub is offered. I am happy to do a meet and

greet with any dog I see while on a walk, and have a great time play-

ing with children. My favorite game is to be chased around the yard

so I would really enjoy living with an active family.

Call 721-1303 if you would like to find out more about me. n

Jack. Hi, I’m Jack! I’m a 1-1/2

year old, Shepherd Mix. I may look

like your average dog, but I am so

much more than that! My story starts

when I was found on the side of

the highway, injured, underweight,

and alone. Most people would have

probably given up on me, but luckily

my hero saw my wagging tail and

had other plans. My right femur was

broken (which happened probably 3 months before she found me), and

luckily I was able to get a Femoral Head Osteotomy which is kind of

like a human’s hip replacement. I’ve been through a lot, but I am as

happy as dogs come! I love people and other dogs, and now my inmate

trainer in New Leash on Life is teaching me all sorts of cool tricks!

Call 721-1303 to find out more about me. n

Zipper. Hi,

I’m Zipper! I’m

just a babe, only 3

months old. I was

brought to Forsyth

Humane Society

along with my

brothers and sisters

because we need

new forever homes.

We love to play

with toys that roll,

jingle, or wiggle when you paw at them! I am a funny little girl and

will keep you entertained.

If you’re looking for a girl like me I hope you will call 721-1303 to

find out how you can adopt me. n

Amore. Hi, I’m Amore.

I’m a 5 month old Shepherd/

Chow Mix. I am a big ball of

fluff that loves to get attention

from people and dogs alike.

I’m currently in foster care

where I am coming out of my

shell and having fun playing

in the yard. I’m hoping to be

fully crate trained and house-

broken super soon! I still

have occasional accidents,

but hey, I’m just a pup. I love

to run in the yard and lounge on the couch, so if I sound like a good

fit for you, please pick me to adopt!

Call 721-1303 if you would like to meet me. n

old, apparently had been in a home that

cared for her before going to another

home that neglected her. Despite the fact

that she had been tied outside with no

shelter, water, or food within reach, she

knows to sit, down, and stay on com-

mand. She knows “Go to your bed,” and

she is house trained. These are not the

indicators of a dog who has been neglected from birth. Thankfully

she ended up at Elijah’s House where she is being loved and nurtured

and well-fed once again. June is a beautiful, happy-go-lucky girl who

loves to play with toys and to get belly rubs. She loves to be made of

and is very easy going - just a grateful and happy girl who is look-

king for happiness in a home with a loving, nurturing family.

Molly. I’m a happy 4-year

old red and white basset hound.

Foster mom says I’m a sweet girl

who loves to get lots of loving and

attention. I get along nicely with

my foster brothers and sisters and

love to run and play with them,

but I also let them know when I’d

rather be by myself. I don’t mind

my crate at all, and am happy to

sleep there at night. I’ve been

learning a lot about house manners

and how to do my business outside like a good girl. If you’re ready

for some kisses and loving basset-style, ask for me — Molly!

Tiny. Hello! I’m Tiny! I may

be a mature Chi but I love people

and get along just fine with the

other foster dogs at my house. I am

spayed and up to date on shots. I

am house trained and laid back and

don’t really like to be picked up but

I love to snuggle in my blankets and

cover myself up. I have my foster

mom trained to let me outside when

I beg, and I love to lay on the deck in the sunshine. When I get too

hot, I bark at the door and she lets me back in. A home visit will be

required so I can only be adopted in NC/SC and VA.

he is small and wants to be a

Midnight. I am a quiet laid back girl that enjoys being held and petted. One of our volunteers puts me on a stool to be

groomed and I will sit for as long as she wants me to. I am fine with other cats, but I really prefer human companionship. Midnight is 3½ years old and she was spayed prior to coming into the shelter. She is holding on to her hope of finding a permanent home where she will be your best friend. loves car rides, long walks and swimming, but most of all she loves

Freija is a pretty, sorrel, 9

year old quarter horse mare. When

she was rescued in 2007, she was

in foal and gave birth to a lovely

colt. Freija was then adopted by

a teenage girl and has been her

steady mount for a couple of years.

Freija is a good trail horse and has

been taken to camp and rodeos. She

loads and travels well, and is up-to-date on vetting and Coggins. As

Freija’s girl progressed in her riding skills, she became interested in

barrel racing. However, it became more and more evident that Freija

did not enjoy barrel racing. So the hard decision was made to return

Freija to the League in order to purchase a finished barrel horse.

Freija needs a home where she can be a nice trail companion.

Hi! I’m Surfer

Joe, but I wasn’t

always! I grew up

in California and

some bad stuff

happened to me that I don’t like to

talk about. I ended up on the street

eating bugs and trash. I was dirty,

someone bit my cute little ear,

and my toenails were curled all

the way into my footpads. I was a

pretty sorry looking dude who did

NOT like people - the dogcatcher

had to get me with one of those

hook on a stick things (scary). The

first of my four angels, Chrissy,

saw something special in this

bedraggled little dog and decided

to try and save me. She got me

cleaned up and Pam (my second

angel) took me as a foster dog. I

loved my family - they had another

doggie, Kipling, for me to hang

out with, and a little girl for me to

watch out for. I am good at watching out

for things. (Mom says I have OCD, what-

ever that is!) But when someone came to

maybe adopt me she leaned over to pet me

and I thought my human baby might be in

trouble so I bit her!! I had to go to quaran-

tine for 10 days. I was so sad. I lost almost

all hope. I completely shut down and when

Pam came to get me I looked lifeless and

forlorn and was so withdrawn I was sitting

in the back of my cage in my own pee.

My two angels were so worried about me

they knew they had to get me to someone

who could try and understand my behav-

ior. (Us minpins are very complex and

persnickety dogs, and I am extra quirky!!!)

They found Friends of Penny Minpin Res-

cue all the way in North Carolina!! They

liked FOP’s philosophy on rescue dogs and

just knew this

was where I was

meant to be. Boy

were they right.

Although no one

likes to fly dogs, there was no other way

to get me there, so I had the most horrific

experience of my entire life - I was put in

a box and shoved into this big metal bird

and I had to endure 13 hours of really loud,

super scary noises all alone.

My third angel, now my very own Aunt

Paula, made all the arrangements for me to

fly into NC and my new Foster Mom (my

fourth angel and furever Mommy), picked

me up. She put me in her car and talked

sweet to me all the way home. I was in love

and knew I was never leaving. It took six

months to convince Foster Mom to become

Furever Mom.

At first Mom thought I was just

another foster. She already had

three girl dogs, and had no desire

to adopt a fourth dog, or a boy.

Plus I was naughty. I bit every

single person that came to Mom’s

house. And I was sneaky - I’d be

all nice until they turned away and

then I’d sneak up, bite them in the

calf and run away. I was also OCD,

and peed on things when I got mad

at them (like the vacuum), and was

generally a bit nuts. All the while,

despite showing my worst behav-

iors, Mom was falling in love.

Finally she figured out that I

wanted to stay and the biting was

to make other people not like

me so they wouldn’t try and take

me away. Once I knew she was

going to adopt me and protect me

forever and ever, I quit chomp-

ing people. Mommy and I have a

special connection and I trust her

completely. I know now I had to

go through all that bad stuff to get

here, and I could not be a happier

little boy. Mom says that I am a

very special dog who is truly loved from

coast to coast. My West Coast family even

came to NC to visit me last fall!

I hope my story gives hope to all the

doggies out there that worry about finding

a furever home. No matter what your issues

are, there is a family out there that will love

you in spite of, or sometimes because of,

your quirky ways. And to all the people

looking to add a doggie to your home,

PLEASE consider a rescue dog. And don’t

rule one out just because he is not what

you think you want. I was everything Mom

wasn’t looking for and turned out to be

more than she ever dreamed of.

training Your Pet

We live in a society

where many people

want and expect

instant gratification.

Unfortunately, this

trend carries over to our relationship

with others, including our pets! When

we bring a new addition into our home,

they many times require us to work at

integrating their wants and needs into

our existing environment. This requires a

real commitment to work with our pets,

not just a couple of days, but creating

a lifestyle (training) that reinforces

expectations and establishes routines.

Before Acquiring a New Pet.

First examine your reasons for getting a

furry companion. Did you ever see a movie

and think the animal actor was “So cute”?

Maybe you saw someone with a certain

breed and just “Fell in love”, or maybe you

just want to see if you are ready for a hu-

man commitment. Instant gratification.

Next, research the breed or the prospec-

tive pet’s temperament, size and any special

requirements. Research yourself. Does your

job requiring long hours or travel? How

active are you? Do you like to spend hours

in front of the TV? This is a long term

decision that should not be taken lightly.

Our shelters are filled with disposable pets,

abandoned after the owners suddenly found

they didn’t have the time, money or energy

to care for their new pets.

Now, if you are committed and accept

the task that you have a 24/7 job for years

– then let’s move forward.

Training - Let’s Look at the Definition.

n To coach in or accustom to a mode of

behavior or performance.

n To focus on or aim at a goal, mark, or

target, to direct.

n To prepare physically, as with a regmen.

To teach an animal to behave in accept-

able ways, especially by using repetition

or practice.

n To guide or teach (to do something),

as by subjecting to various exercises

or experiences.

Remember–If you pay someone else

to take your “new companion” to a train-

ing facility for weeks and return your “all

trained” companion – It is your ultimate

responsibility to maintain the structure and

schedule. EVERY DAY! When you send

your companion away for training, you have

to work on the opportunity to bond. Most

facilities who train dogs outside the home,

strongly encourage owner participation.

Why train your dog? A well-behaved

and obedient dog is a happy dog and

you will be happier too! The dog will do

better around other people and in various

social situations. This can be particularly

important if there are children in the home.

Training your pet will add to the stability in

your household. It will also give both you

and your dog the trust that helps to bond

your relationship.

Remember. . .The time spent on training

your pet is very worthwhile and will have a

lasting effect on both you and your family.

By Peggy McLeod

If you are not willing to be responsible - you will have

two broken hearts – yours and your companions!

I have a gift of communication with animals. They have always known I will not harm them and will protect at all costs. I Like to teach people just how special these creatures are and how lucky we are to have them in our lives. We ALL want love and understanding. Trust is the key. Why Foster?

Take a look at all the sweet

faces in this publication, and

you’re bound to ask: “How

can I help?” There are many

ways to help animal shelters

and rescues save an animal’s life, but one of

the most enjoyable and rewarding ways is to

foster a dog or cat in your home. Fostering

literally saves lives because it creates an

open spot at a shelter or rescue. Sadly, our

animal shelters are bursting at the seams due

to the influx of litters of puppies and kittens,

the offspring of dogs and cats who have not

been spayed or neutered. Often the parents

come along to the shelter as well, where they

join sometimes hundreds of dogs abandoned

or neglected by their owners. Rescues

desperately try to help with the overflow,

and most rely on foster homes to house the

animals they rescue. Fostering for either a

shelter or a rescue is a win-win situation for

both foster home and foster animal.

“So what’s in it for me?” Some folks

foster because they love dogs or cats, and

it’s an easy way to share that love with

multiple animals. Fostering as a family

gives children the opportunity to learn how

to care for an animal, and introduces them

to the responsibility that goes along with

it. If you’re interested in dog ownership

and don’t know which breed would be best

for you, foster for one of the breed-specific

rescues and find out! If you’re a retired

person, fostering an animal can provide

companionship , exercise (particularly

with a dog), and interaction with others.

Even elderly folks can foster an older,

more laid-back dog or cat, again providing

companionship, a sense of accomplishment,

and that all-important empty spot for another

needy animal.

“What’s so special about foster homes?”

All animals benefit from being in a home as

opposed to a shelter. Animal shelters often

need foster homes for litters of puppies or

kittens to protect their developing immune

systems. Sometimes a litter comes in

without the mother, so the foster home gives

round-the-clock care that the mother would

normally provide. These youngsters also

gain the socialization that prepares them

to be a family’s cherished pet. Adult dogs

and cats learn how to be part of a family,

and benefit from training in basic house

manners, which is impossible in the shelter

environment. Imagine the shock of a senior

dog or cat entering a shelter when all they’ve

known is a loving home with an owner now

deceased. What a mercy a foster home would

be for that dog or cat!

“So what’s involved with fostering?” Most

rescues pay for all vetting, flea and tick

medicine, and heartworm prevention. Many

shelters do the same. The Guilford County

Animal Shelter, for example, provides

their foster homes with vetting, medicines,

guidance, and support. All you provide is a

loving home. Some shelters or rescues ask

their foster homes to publicize the animal

or find it a permanent home, while some

have a website to promote their animals,

and adoption coordinators to process

applications. Take a look at the shelter or

rescue websites in this publication and you’ll

find that all are desperate for foster homes,

and outline their foster program’s details.

“But I can’t foster because I’d get too

attached to my dog/cat and want to keep it.”

So how do seasoned foster parents take an

animal in time after time, love and nurture it,

and then watch it walk away with someone

else? Some say they have a mindset that the

animal isn’t there to stay, but is merely on a

stopover on the way to their forever home.

Some focus on how happy the animal will

be in their forever home. Others realize that

there’s a limit to the number of animals they

can have, and reaching that limit means they

must say “no” to fostering and saving

another life.

So would you like the satisfaction of having

a dog or cat but not the expense? Could you

find a nook or cranny in your heart and home

to accommodate a needy animal? If so, you

would be giving an animal the gift of life, and

a shelter or rescue the opportunity to help one

more. Even if you can’t foster, spread the

word to friends and family that they can make

a difference by fostering. “Saving an animal’s

life won’t change the world, but it will change

the world for that animal.”

Thanks again for doing such a great job with Champ!! We loved him very much before, but now we can love him and actually enjoy him. This week he’s been to Tractor Supply, and a man commented on how well behaved our dog was. He was walked by

our 11yr. old neighbor on Sunday evening and this morning he shared his bed/place with a 12 week old hyper Doberman that kept climbing on his back, he did not even flinch....(I took pictures). Anyway, we are looking forward to letting him come to Companion Club, Maintenance Training and hopefully sometimes when we are at work. Thanks again for everything, we have really enjoyed getting to know you guys.Adam, Cesar Millan, (The Dog Whisperer)
