Since the last issue of the Trianglewas published, our Company hasexperienced a number of significantchanges.

Faced with low sales of ourproducts, at depressed prices, it wasnecessary to reduce employmentlevels, production and costs. Inaccordance with these cost saving

articles of interest to pensioners. Youcan look forward to seeing an INTouch section in the Trianglebeginning with the next edition.

Another change you should also beaware of, is the frequency ofpublication. The Triangle will now bepublished approximately every sixweeks instead of every four weeks aswas the case in the past. In order tokeep employees informed of thingsthat occur between Triangles, theCompany newsletter ''Direct Line'' willbe used in a slightly modified form tosupplement the Triangle. The DirectLine will be available through theDirect Line boxes at each location andthe Triangle will be available throughthe regular Triangle boxes as it was inthe past.

Welcome back. We, as a Company, you as individuals, along with ourcommunity, have been going through one of the most difficult periods in ourhistory. All of us have faced considerable problems, While we have a longrecovery period ahead, I believe that the worst is behind us and that theprospects for a recovery are brighter than they were a few months ago.

As we begin the complex task of starting up our mines and plants, I amparticularly concerned with the avoidance of injury. I ask for your commitmentto the practices and procedures which have been reviewed with you by yoursupervisors.

One of our most important objectives for 1983 is a substantialimprovement in accident prevention performance over previous years and thisobjective will only be met by a renewed effort by all of us.

We have taken a number of measures to keep our Company in acompetitive position, many involving decisions which were unpleasant anddifficult to make. These have been outlined in your employee presentationsand were also published in the Report to Employees that was mailed to yourhomes. I believe that these measures will enable us to succeed in our fight forsurvival.

To make them most effective, however, we will need your activeparticipation and support. I believe that one person can make a difference. Ifyou, in the course of doing your job, become aware of procedures which canbe made safer or more efficient and improvements which could conservesupplies, you can help by bringing your suggestions to our attention.

Your past efforts are appreciated and I am confident that together we canbuild for the future.

George Stesco at his desk in the purchasingdepartment.

"Prospecting the past,pioneering the future."

George Stesco had a few choicewords for the Sudbury CentennialFoundation and they made him awinner.

George, a buyer in the purchasingdepartment, thought up the winningslogan in the SCF's contest to statebriefly the theme of Sudbury'scentennial. ... ''Prospecting the past,pioneering the future.'

Not one given to entering contestsof any sort (he thought this mighthave been the first he had everentered), George saw this competitionas a way of taking part in thecentennial celebrations. His phrasewas selected the best out of over 200entries.

"It was very difficult to try and put atheme or catchy phrase in eight wordsor less," said George, "especiallyabout a city. In eight words or lessyou couldn't be too descriptive."

The centennial logo showing twominers, one from the past and onefrom the present, he explained,indicated to him that the words woulddefinitely have to reflect mining. Aweek before the contest deadlineGeorge submitted what turned out tobe the winning slogan and twovariations of it.

"When I submitted the entry, I trulyfelt I wanted to win," he recalled."The words did convey a theme theycould use, a theme that was veryapplicable."

The SCF informed George of hisgood fortune by telephone. "I wasquite pleased and surprised," hecommented. A cheque for $100 andvarious centennial souvenirs were theprizes he was awarded for winningthe contest. "The reward wasdefinitely in the winning," Georgemaintained. "The prize was a bit of abonus."

A proud, life long Sudburian, headded that the slogan reflects exactlyhow he feels about the city.

Frank SorochinskyWith the retirement of JohnMacDougall the areas ofadministration, engineering andmaintenance have been consolidatedunder one vice-president, FrankSorochinsky. Reporting to Frank areAlbert Magee , recently appointedassistant vice-president, administration;Randy Cave director of computerservices; Dar Anderson , manager ofmaintenance; Peter Pula, manager ofengineering; John LeMay , managerof central untilities and Don Bradley,recently appointed technical assistant.

Jack Juusolawas appointed to the position ofdivision planner.

Safety and environmental controlBill Collis was appointed manager ofthe safety and environmental controldepartment. This new department is aconsolidation of the safety and plantprotection and environmental controlfunctions, which recognizes theincreasing complexity of safety andenvironmental matters and the need toeffectively co-ordinate our resources.Reporting to Bill Collis are: LarryBanbury , superintendent,environmental control; Stu Gendron,superintendent, safety, milling,smelting, refining and maintenance;Peter Venus superintendent, safety,mining; John Rickaby,superintendent safety, central services;Chuck Greenough , chief security co-ordinator; Jack Hall, fire inspector. BillCollis will continue to report to AlbertMagee, assistant vice-presidentadministration and, on matters relatedto safety policy to Wint Newman.

Claudio Barsottimanager of the mines researchdepartment assumed the additionalresponsibility for the management ofCopper Cliff North mine, North minewhich was placed on standby in 1978,is being reactivated as an operatingresearch mine dedicated to thedevelopment of safer and moreproductive mining technology forapplications in all Ontario divisionmines.

Hank Derks and Livio VisentinHank Derks, chief first aid co-ordinator, and Livio Visentin,audiometric testing co-ordinator, willreport to Dr. Wally Woychuk, medicaldirector, occupational healthdepartment.

Consolidation of Copper Cliffnickel refinery and IORPThese two plants are now under onemanagerial area. Reporting to PeterRyan as manager are: Allan Bale,superintendent of operations; PeterTodd , superintendent of maintenance,George Tyroler , superintendent ofprocess technology; Tony Steers,administrative assistant. Reporting toAllan Bale are: Jack Noonan,superintendent of the nickel refineryconverter department ; Clive Lewis,superintendent of the IPC department;and Bob McDonald , superintendentof sulphur products department.

Consolidation of Copper Cliffsmelter and matte processingAs part of an overall plan to integratematte processing operations with theCopper Cliff smelter, Jose Blanco,manager of the smelter will have theadded responsibility of the matteprocessing department. CharlieMitchell will continue assuperintendent of operations for matteprocessing and reports to JoseBlanco.

Hugh Judgeswas appointed manager of centralmills. He succeeds Hilton Fowler whoretired.

Mines restructuringAll Ontario division mines are nowunder four major managerial areas.The Creighton mine area will nowinclude Copper Cliff South mine. JohnKelly is the manager of this entirearea. Frood Stobie area will nowinclude Garson mine and will beunder the direction of manager JimAshcroft . The Levack mine area willcontinue to include Levack mine,McCreedy West, McCreedy East andColeman mine. Johri Smith will beresponsible for this area.Shebandowan area will continue toinclude the mine and mill operations.Bill Anderson has responsibility forthis area.

"Safety remains ournumber one priority "

Many changes have taken placewithin the company since theproduction shutdown commencedsome months ago. One thing that hasremained constant is the commitmentto safety. "Safety,'' said Bill Collis,Manager of Safety and EnvironmentalControl, "remains our number onepriority."

In order to re-acquaint employeeswith the safety aspects of their jobsupon their return to work in April, acomprehensive training program wasgiven before actual "hands on" workcommenced. It was part of the re-orientation program that began with a"face-to-face" presentation to allemployees. Managers updated peopleon the state of the company, theoutlook for the future and their role inthat future.

Superintendents and foremen thenreviewed safety subjects common toall jobs such as personal protectiveequipment, fire procedure andreporting of accidents. Current safetyprograms such as Loss Control, theSafety System and the Five Star

Program were also reviewed. A newback injury prevention and treatmentprogram to be implemented in 1983was also unveiled.

The Loss Control program wasintroduced to all surface operations inSudbury during 1981-82. During thefirst four months of 1983, Mines Safetyand Loss Control will be introduced toall levels of management andsupervision in the mining and millingsections. Loss Control is defined asany intentional management actiondirected at the prevention, reductionor elimination of pure risks ofbusiness. Its concepts are designed toprevent or eliminate all factors whichdowngrade the system. These factorsinclude personal injury, propertydamage, fire, pollution, inadequatesecurity and poor hygiene.

The Safety System, also referred toas the Neil George System, is aprogram designed to make eachindividual aware of the hazards in theirwork area and to take the necessaryaction to reduce or eliminate thesehazards. The system was reintroduced

into the mining and milling operationsthroughout 1982. It will be introducedto all surface plants this year.

The five star program or theInternational Safety Rating System hasbeen in place at several Incooperations in Sudbury since 1981.Forty certified evaluators who are Incoemployees, trained by the IndustrialAccident Prevention Association,conduct evaluations at the areaswhere the program has been in effect.They measure the safety activity andinjury/illness experience against a pre-set standard.

Commencing in 1983 all employeeswill be covered by a new back injuryprevention and treatment program.Devised by Inco's Medical Director Dr.Woychuk in conjunction with theWorkmen's Compensation Board, thisis a comprehensive and rehabilitativeeducational program. Instructors willbe Inco employees and the programwill be given in-plant.

own Pb classifications. Finallyemployees and supervisors inspectedthe workplace and made anynecessary repairs and alterationsbefore actual production began.

We have two major Objectives toachieve this year,'' explains Bill. ''Nofatalities and an improvement in safetyperformance of 30 per cent over thefirst four months of 1982.

"All of us have to work together inorder to achieve these goals. We havelooked to our Safety and HealthCommittees for help in this regard inthe past and we will continue to seektheir assistance in the future."

1981 and 1982 were fatality-freeyears. This trend must continue if Incois to achieve its goal in 1983. Interms of disabling injuries in 1982, themonth of May showed a 30 per centincrease over the January to Aprilperiod which significantly affected theyear's performance. We expect amarked improvement in this area inthe next few months. The costs inhuman suffering are simply too high tocontinue at this level.'

Largo Albert talks about hoist safety devices with hoist mechanical supervisors from other miningcompanies during one of the training sessions he presented at the Scotia tower last year. Heconducts these sessions throughout North America in affiliation with INCO Tech and the MinesAccident Prevention Association of Ontario.

Largo Albert - CIMM'sDistinguished lecturer

Largo Albert, senior hoist specialistwith the company, was honoured lastspring when he was presented withthe Canadian Institute of Mining andMetallurgy Distinguished LecturerAward for 1982 by CIMM president,Noel Cleland, following the InstituteAnnual Dinner at Quebec City.

The award was one of sevengranted by the CIMM on an annualbasis. Distinguished lecturers areselected because of theiraccomplishments in scientific,technical, administrative or educationalactivities related to the mineralsindustry. They are expected to givelectures on subjects related to theirexpertise at CIMM branches acrossCanada in the coming year.

An Inco employee for the last 15years, Largo began his career as anapprentice electrician immediatelyfollowing graduation from high school.At 20 he was a first class electricianand six years later Largo undertook

his first plant construction. His worktook him to the gold mines ofManitouwadge and the huge potashoperations of Saskatchewan where hefirst became interested in the hoistingaspect of the mining industry.

Part of the central maintenancedepartment (originally the mechanicalengineering department), Largo hasbeen involved with major hoistoperations at Stobie mine, Colemanmine, Copper Cliff South mine, CreanHill mine and Creighton mine.

Much of Largo's efforts in the lastfew years have centered on the safetyaspects of hoists. He discusses andreviews safety requirements forhoisting with various groups includinggovernment inspectors.

His outside association and workwith the Ontario Mining Association,the Canadian Standards Associationand the International Organization forStandards has all been related to

upgrading standards for the increasedsafety of hoisting ropes and hoists.

Largo also conducts a unique safetycourse about Lilly Controllers andHoist Safety throughout NorthAmerica. Over 800 people have takenthis popular course sponsored by Incofor members of the Mines AccidentPrevention Association of Ontario.

''It's really an honor,'said Largo,commenting on the presentation of theaward. "I never expected that aDistinguished Lecturer Award wouldbe given to me."

His lecture to CIMM branchesacross the country was "Hoists,Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow."One of his concerns during the lecturetour was "to get to the plantsuperintendent level and talk to himabout his problems." He describes hisyear long tour of the country as arewarding experience in terms ofknowledge gained and in terms ofmeeting friends both old and new.

State of the nation first order of businessThe first order of business for employees returning to work this

month after the extended shutdown was learning the state of thecompany , its goals for the near future and the role of employees in thatfuture . Plant managers using overhead projections gave the orientationpresentation and addressed themselves to any questions or concernsvoiced by employees . The highlights of the orientation program were:- the goals for the Ontario division in

1983 are to work safely, improveproductivity and competitiveness,reduce costs and increaseprofitability and improve ourposition in markets.

- safety objectives are to realize afatality free year and to improvesafety performance by 30 per centover the first four months of 1982.

- major productivity improvementsplanned for the company includean expanded mining researchprogram and an acceleratedchangeover to lower-cost bulkmining methods at a number offacilities. In order to increasecompetitiveness, productivity gainsmust be realized at all locations.

- employment levels will be kept inline with production.

- lower demand and excessinventories held by major nickelproducers has kept the price ofnickel down. The company'saverage net realized price for itsprimary nickel products "includingintermediates" was $3.14 a poundin 1980, $2.99 a pound in 1981and $2.55 a pound in 1982. Therealized price per pound of copperwent from $1.00 in 1980 to 82cents in 1981 to 71 cents in 1982Inco has reduced SO2 emissions bytwo thirds since the 1960's. Thecompany is committed to reducingemissions further and has installeda new pyrrhotite rejection processat Copper Cliff mill at a cost of $14million.

economy. Nickel demand hasdropped for three consecutiveyears but there is room for cautiousoptimism that demand will improveif better economic conditions arerealized.

- Inco remains the largest nickelproducer and one of the lowest-cost nickel producers in the non-communist world. Inco is one of 37nickel producers in 19 non-communist countries, some ofwhich are government subsidized.No major producers showed aprofit in 1982. Problems werecreated when nickel deliveries tothe non-communist world wereincreased by communist blocnations. Also, certain producerssold inventories at extremelyreduced prices.

The Ken MacLean family of Lively loves the outdoor life,During vacation time, Ken, who is a tandem truck driverat the Creighton mine complex, his wife Kathy anddaughter Stephanie 4, load up the trailer and gocamping at the provincial parks in the Sudbury region.Ken and Kathy pursue their fishing interests in the wintermonths as well during their snowmobile treks to LakePenage and Fairbanks Lake. Since the time this photowas taken, the MacLeans have had an addition to thefamily with son Steven, born in November, 1982.

Angelo DiPasquale has been working at the Port Colborne nickelrefinery for 19 years. In his spare time he enjoys hunting, fishing andmaking improvements around his home. His wife Debbie considersherself a full time homemaker and is proud of it. The children areMaria. 2. Sandma. 7 and Angela. 6

SuggestionplanawardsThe great number of suggestionsreceived make it impossible (dueto space limitations) for theTriangle to publish all awardwinners . In April 1982, 92suggestions earned a total of$9,430 in Sudbury and PortColborne.

The processing of suggestion plan awards temporarily ceased during the shutdown last year. As aresult the Triangle is publishing the list of suggestion award winners for April, 1982 in this edition. TheMay, 1982 list of suggestion plan winners will be published in the next issue. Subsequent issues of theTriangle will carry winners processed since the return to work this year.

$3,250 Noticing that the carboflex on 368G roaster in the Copper Cliff smelter protected only thefront half of the blade, Georges Desjardins recommended that carboflex protection beextended over the full length of the blade. It is the back of the blade, he said, that did most ofthe work in removing feed from the hearth. His idea saved material and labor costs byprolonging the life of the blades and it earned him the top suggestion award this month.

$465 Robert Langdon of Copper Cliff South mine came up with an alternative method of blastingin vertical retreat mining that saved on costs of materials. Instead of using scufflex, Austinprimers, E. cord and 45 cm. anoline for the blast, he suggested using E. cord, sliders andNonel 45 cm. short delay caps.

$220 When flat guide wheels at Creighton mine were sent in for repairs punctured tubes weregenerally disposed of. William Blackwell proposed that punctured tubes be repaired byvulcanizing a hot patch over the hole. This saved on the expense of buying new tubes.

$185 A better, more reliable, more economic means of heating the bottom of the transportationdepartment's west scales resulted from Michel Trottier 's advice to switch from an oil heatingsystem to an electrical system.

$175 Harold Kiely of Stobie mine suggested an alternate method of coupling three-inch bull hosedirectly to four inch victaulic air lines that realized savings in material costs.

$150 Replacing stainless steel pipe in the 2300 level clarifier at Copper Cliff South mine with plasticpipe was recommended by Paul Latvala . This was found to reduce the costs of materials,

$150 Another employee at South mine, Wilfred Galipeau , saw stainless steel piping in filter drumswearing away at the elbows. He alleviated this problem with his suggestion of replacing thestainless steel piping with plastic piping.

$150 Two Levack mine employees, Jean Paul Coutu and Norm Prevost collaborated to design atool, adaptable to air drills, that permitted the installation of railway spikes. It turned out to be asafer, quicker way of installing them.
