President’s Message: I was happy to see a good crowd attending September's meeting. However, I
sincerely hope that the number of attendees continues to grow . This is a great
outlet for folks to communicate desires and concerns amongst each other. The
programs also continue to keep us aware of new techniques, supplies, and
various information to keep us up to date.
I was very excited to learn more about the Wannawearone Race taking place
on Saturday, October 4. I do believe that we can all contribute in some way
to this program, either by walking or running on that morning, contributing
financially to the cause, or by purchasing an item at the Silent Auction taking
place there.
I am looking forward to seeing you at our October 7 meeting and every first
Tuesday of the month.
Sincerely,
Sam DeAngelo

One of the wonderful things about Fall is the start of the football season! This is a great time to take inspiration from Rolf Benirschke, the place kicker for the San Diego Chargers from 1977 to 1987. Benirschke was diagnosed with UC and became an osto-mate in 1978. He returned to the team in 1979 to become their leading scorer. He was chosen to the Pro Bowl in 1982 and was the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 1983. "When I was first diagnosed with ulcerative colitis," Rolf remembers, "I was convinced in my mind (wrongly) that if I submitted to surgery, I would be forced to give up football and all the other activities I loved. It was during my recovery that I realized that there were thousands of other people living with the same fears I had experienced." Benirschke has gone on to work with the CCF as well as the Great Comebacks Award Program that recognizes ostomates who have overcome challenges in their life.
