Introduction Thank you for your interest in triathlon a very exciting sport to participate in and also to watch. Belonging to Holmfirth Harriers is an excellent way to get more involved in triathlon. We cater for all abilities including complete beginners. Some of our senior athletes have represent Team GB in the Age Group Championships and our junior athletes represent Yorkshire & Humberside at the Inter Regional Championships. Yorkshire & Humberside have been IRC winners in 2009 and 2010 a great achievement for the area and individually for our club with 4 individuals in 2009 and 5 in 2010 being part of the winning team. All of our athletes have been a first timer at some stage or other in their Triathlon Career. Although the reasons for starting may differ all agree that it is an addictive sport, which is fun and varied to both train and compete for. Holmfirth Harriers is a club that cater for all levels of ability and experience, with our own Triathlon coaches, as well as access to all of the running coaches. There is training at all three disciplines available throughout the year for all athletes. We have a very active junior section which has been competing since 2005 and the adult section becoming more active in 2009. Triathlon is a great sport for all ages from 8 to 108! Getting started in the sport of triathlon at Holmfirth Harriers is easy. All you need is a bike, running shoes and pair of swimming goggles. There are heaps of races for beginners offering short distances which are easily achievable with a small amount of training for people who are fit and healthy. For the children there is a series of events over various distances based on your age. For seniors there are also lots of events up and down the country to take part in. Other then triathlon there is Aquathlon an event where there is no cycle leg, just Run, Swim, and Run. There is also Duathlon which has no swim leg, just Run, Bike, and Run. To make it even more interesting there are also mountain bike Triathlon and Duathlons. Then there is the Ironman which is the marathon of Triathlon, it still has the same legs as a triathlon but the distances are much much longer! Benefits of Membership Access to Qualified Coaches and Training Programmes Access to Open Water Swimming Subsidised Club Kit Discounts from suppliers Friendly advice and knowledge Additional fees will be paid for swimming sessions, both pool based and open water. It is highly recommended that members join British Triathlon, as well as getting the annual handbook, which contains all the races and information, you get insurance and a race licence which with allow you reduced fees when you enter events. See the British Triathlon web site www.britishtriathlon.org for more details. How does triathlon work? A triathlon (aquathlon or duathlon) is a continuous race over different disciplines and timed against the clock. The winner is not necessarily the first across the line as there can be many different heats, especially for the adults. 1. A triathlon starts with a swim, mostly in a pool but some, especially adults, in open water. 2. After the swim the athletes enter the Transition Area, this is where they change into their shoes and

helmet and then enter the cycling leg of the course. 3. Once finishing the cycle leg of the race, triathletes enter into the Transition Area and dismount the bike,

shoes are put on and helmet is taken off. 4. The final leg is the run, sometimes laps sometimes not, then across the finish line! What makes a successful triathlete? You can be a good swimmer, a strong cyclist and a fast runner, but you need to be an organised triathlete. Transition, where you change from one sport to another, is the key to success. If you are prepared and your gear is ready you will have a successful race.

What do I Wear? You don't need to spend bundles of cash on all the latest tri gear. A few of the basics are all you need to get started. It couldn't be simpler: Swim Novice events tend to be pool-based; a swimming hat lowers water resistance and saves you vital seconds in the water, so it definitely counts as a triathlon essential. Goggles are a godsend when you're swimming in a pack of enthusiastic triathletes. Being able to see what's going on is the difference between getting stuck in the pack or making a breakaway lead. Cold British open water swims mean you can't overlook wetsuits - they're compulsory with water temperatures below 14 degrees. A full-length wetsuit is still advisable. Bike Nobody is excused from wearing a helmet, so you'll never see a triathlete riding without a lid, not even an elite. Modern helmets are reasonably priced, simple to use and they give the best protection to your most important parts. One nasty tumble is all it takes. You don't need a purpose-made tri-suit to compete in, but something close-fitting and comfortable and, if you are taking part in an open-water swim, which can be worn under a wetsuit is ideal. This means you save valuable time in Transition, although without spending a load of cash your Harriers vest and shorts will do just as well, but extra padding in the saddle area is desirable. A bike has to count as an essential piece of triathlon equipment, but until you get to a more advanced level you don't have to worry about the quality of your bike. Drag your old one out of the shed, but be sure to give it a good service; you don’t want your first race cut short with mechanical failure! Cycling Shoes are a luxury if you're just starting out, but you definitely want shoes that are easy to get on and off during transitions. The advantage of cycling shoes is that they attach to the pedals giving you better cycling stability and power. Juniors do not tend to change shoes and just race in trainers. Run Again, there is no real need for specialist running shoes and gear at first. Swim, run and bike kit can double up; just make sure that the outfit you choose to wear is comfortable, even when you've been cycling in it.

Training For full training including, swimming, open water swimming, circuits, turbo, brick sessions, running and more please see our web site or notice board at the club. Or contact Andrew Kerry. Running Every Tuesday and Thursday at Neiley, 7-8pm Holmfirth Harriers, New Mill Road, Honley Swimming There are KAL courses in Huddersfield for you to access as well as local swimming clubs. If you need details please contact Andrew Kerry who will be happy to give you more information. In 2011 we are hoping to support our senior Triathletes further in this area and holding coached swimming sessions as a club at a local swimming pool. Please look out for details. Open Water Swimming We currently swim at the Redbrook reservoir at Marsden, from June to September. For further details of the swims please contact us. This is a swim only session with no coaching. There will be a small fee for each swim session which will go towards fees for used of the facility and refreshments. A full open water swim pack will be available. If open water swimming you must complete a declaration form before swimming and also read and abide by the Code of Conduct outline for Open Water Swimming by the Club. Open water swimming is probably the most daunting aspect of triathlon for the novice competitor. So long as you are prepared and practice it is not to be feared. By the end of your first “open session” you should be able to complete the following:

1) Get in and out of your wet suit without help (especially so in a race) 2) Be happy and comfortable in the water 3) Be able to swim in a straight line and “sight breath” 4) Be prepared for how and why you may feel “faint” on exiting the water 5) Be happy swimming in a close pack 6) Be aware, understand and be able to do “deep water starts” 7) Understand how to attract attention in unlikely situation of needing help/rescue

Above all it is vital you listen to the safety brief given at the start and remember that it is not advised to drink the water you are swimming in! If you have any questions then ask before entering the water, this includes notifying the organisers of any medical conditions you may suffer from. Cycling / Turbo Various cycle training over the summer, see web site for details. Turbo training over the winter at Neiley on Wednesday evening s, with sessions available for juniors and seniors.

Triathlon – in brief! Preparation: Before Race Day Make sure all of your race equipment is ready: Trisuit/Swimming Costume/Trunks, Goggles, Swim Cap (if desired, but you may be given one at the event), Number Belt, Pins, Cycle Shoes, Running Trainers, Towels, Drink pre race and on the bike. It is better to use trainers designed for running in and that have been worn before to race in. Practice running and swimming (doesn’t have to be done together) over the set distances for your age so that you are use to/ aware of how far you are going, Registration: You will need to go to registration before each event and in good time and have a good look at the course. Especially transition where you go in and out after the swim and the bike. At registration you will usually collect a bag with everything in it that you will need for the race i.e. number pins etc. Make sure you know what time your race starts, it is your responsibility to be on time! At registration it is usual to: • Collect your race number and safety pins, but take some just in case! • Get your right arm and right calf marked with your race number, not at all events. • Show your Triathlon England license if you are a member • Collect your Day licence if you are not a member Race number must be attached, in all four corners, to the front of the vest/T-shirt that you will be wearing during the event. The use of number belt is usually allowed. Point to remember – number on back while cycling, number on your front while on the run. Race Briefing: After registration shortly before the event starts a race briefing will take place. It is recommended that you attend to make sure there are no last minute changes to the course. You will be able to ask any questions as well at the briefing, if you are unsure just ask! Rules: Event will be held in accordance with British Triathlon rules. A copy of these rules can be obtained from the national web-site (www.britishtriathlon.org). There will be a race marshal at events and at his discretion can apply time penalties or disqualify athletes who do not follow the rules. Make sure you know them. Transition Area: Before the first race begins you will be required to put your bike, cycling and running gear in the transition area. The transition area will be marshalled and you are not allowed in without showing your race number first. Transition areas are usually numbered. It is important you know where you have left your bike and know where to run in from the swim, out with the bike, back in with the bike and out again on the run! Sounds complicated but is usually straight forward.

Page 10: Triathlon is a great sport for all ages - Holmfirth Harriers › archive2 › triathlon › Holmfirth... · 2011-12-27 · Triathlon is a great sport for all ages from 8 to 108!

8

Swim: Most pools are 25m long but some not, make sure you know how many lengths you have to swim. Each event especially for juniors can be different. For seniors at least with open water you do not have to count which is great but you have the added pressure of swimming in a pack. Make sure you arrive at the pool or water in good time, wet suits can be tricky to get on when in a rush! The marshals at the pool will check your race number and direct you to your lane. Do not get into the water until directed to do so. You will start in the water (no diving is permitted). The starter will remind you of the number of lengths you need to do. At the end of the swim you will climb out of the pool and follow directions to transition. Remember even the time it takes you to get out of the pool and changed into your running gear is recorded. This is where you will put on your shoes, helmet, number belt and collect your bike. You must put on your helmet before you touch your bike. Push your bike, riding in transition is not allowed, to the mount line where you can then get on your bike. Make sure your race number on your t-shirt is clearly visible for the Bike your number must be shown on your back and for the run it must be on the front. Some athletes put Talcum powder in their trainers, also al little Vaseline is also useful. You can put on socks and extra clothing but don’t forget the clock has not stopped. Practice transition, it sounds obvious but practice makes perfect. Find the right order for you. Elastic laces in your trainers are much quicker to fasten than ordinary laces. Bike: On the bike section while riding drafting is not allowed. This means that you are not allowed to take pace/ride close on the wheel of the rider in front. Keep wide and pass as soon as possible. You will get time penalties and after the second warning may get disqualified. After completing the bike section, make sure you know how many laps, enter transition again, but you will be asked to dismount at a certain point make sure you do this. There is no riding in transition allowed, if you do you may be disqualified. This time make sure you rack your bike before you take off your helmet. Change into your running shoes if you have used different shoes for the bike. Then the run section is last to go, making sure you move your race number to the front. Run: Out of transition follow the run route, may be multi laps, make sure you know how many laps you need to do. When you have completed your laps run through the finish line with a smile on your face. Try to finish, you may regret it later, no one wants a DNF! If this sound complicated, please don’t worry, please speak to other athletes who will be only too happy to put you at ease and answer any questions you have.
