The Institution of Engineers (India) or IEI is the largest multidisciplinary professional body that encompasses 15 engineering disciplines and gives engineers a global platform for sharing professional interest. IEI has

membership strength of above 0.8 million. Established in 1920, with its headquarter at 8 Gokhale Road, Kolkata-700020, IEI has served the engineering fraternity close to a century. During this period of time, IEI has

been inextricably linked with the history of modern-day engineering.In 1935, IEI was incorporated by Royal Charter and remains the only professional body in India which has been

accorded this honour. Today, its quest for professional excellence has given it a place of pride in almost every

prestigious and relevant organization across the globe. It provides a vast array of technical, professional and supporting services to the Government, Industries, Academia and the Engineering fraternity, operating

through its 123 Centres located across the country and 6 overseas chapters. Besides, IEI has bilateral agreements with about 31 international bodies and membership of another 8 international bodies of the

developed nations across the globe.Being recognized as a Scientific and Research Organisation (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, IEI promotes the cause of

research and development by providing Grant-in-Aid support to undergraduate, post graduate students and PhD Research Scholars of Engineering Institutions and Universities.

IEI conducts Section A & B Examinations in various engineering disciplines (popularly known as AMIE examination), the successful completion of which is recognized as equivalent to Degree in appropriate field of

Engineering of recognized Universities of India by the Ministry of Human Resources Development,

Government of India. Every year large number of candidates appear for these exams.IEI in collaboration with Springer regularly publishes peer-reviewed international journal in five series,

namely, Series A, Series B, Series C, Series D and Series E covering fifteen engineering disciplines.For details, please see: www.ieindia.org.

From a little hut to a campus with a two storied building, two-conference halls, each capable of seating 100

people, office, library, guest house and an auditorium for 300 people, 3 class rooms for continuous education has been an impressive journey. This has been possible only due to the hard work by fellow members, State

Government, Public Sector Undertakings and Private Sector Organisations. At present around 3000 members including Associates, 7500 student members are enrolled with Jharkhand State Centre. This is an achievement

in comparison to 87 corporate members in 1961. Jharkhand State Centre is designated as 'A' category centre

by the Institution of Engineers (India). The centre has been actively engaged in voicing its concerns over many issues from time to time and call on engineers to face the challenges to emphasis on the engineer's role in

Society and engineers as managers. The Centre has been organising cultural programmes to inculcate bond among members and their families. Independence Day and Republic Day are celebrated with family members

Tribology Society of India (TSI) is a premier professional society set up in 1989 with a vision to spread

awareness and practice of Tribology all across India. The Society is affiliated to the International Tribology Council, UK. For fulfilling its mission, the Society is regularly organising various Conferences at International,

National and Regional levels. The International Conference on Industrial Tribology (ICIT, now IndiaTrib) is

being organised biennially at different locations of the country and is highly popular among industries and academia. TSI is also striving hard to disseminate knowledge through international level training

programmes. In this endeavour “Summer School in Tribology” is its annual education course where a unique blend of participants from academia and industries are selected for promoting research in Tribology.

Publications of TSI include “Indian Journal of Tribology” and “TSI Newsletter”, which not only serve as a useful

source of current technical knowledge, but also provide a forum to Tribology professionals for sharing their own work and learning.

Mining and Heavy Industries play a significant role in the development of National Economy. In Mining

Industry heavy earth moving equipment are deployed which are mostly powered by diesel engines. These engines consume a large amount of HSD and lubricants. Similarly in heavy industries different type of

lubricating and cooling lubricants are utilized. It has been recognized beyond doubt that wear and tear constitute the major portion of maintenance cost and systematic application of tribology practices can save significantly the energy cost as well as maintenance cost. Tribology is a multi-disciplinary subject dealing with science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion. The term has been derived from the Greek word “Tribos” (meaning “Rubbing”) and in general it

denotes the subject of Friction, Wear and Lubrication. Over the years, Tribology has been recognized as a very important aspect in all industrial operations. Application of correct Tribological practices is helpful to the

industries in protecting and enhancing life of plants and machinery, preventing expensive breakdowns, improving efficiency of operations and reducing energy consumption.

India has a large network of steel, mining and allied heavy industries. Besides working under tremendous load

of heat, dust and severity, these industries are highly energy intensive. These conditions pose big challenge to Tribology and therefore it is required to develop and apply advanced tribological concepts for improving

equipment reliability, reducing energy consumption, and providing healthy working environment to the operating personnel and other habitants. It is need of the hour to evolve suitable tribological approach

especially for reduction in energy consumption in these industries.

In view of the above, The Institution of Engineers and Tribology Society of India, two eminent professional

bodies of India, have joined hands together in organising an All India Seminar on Tribology as Energy saver for Mining, Steel and other Heavy Industries on September 28-29, 2019, at Ranchi. The Seminar shall provide a

common platform to industry practitioners, maintenance engineers, researchers, academicians and technology suppliers for smooth exchange of latest knowledge in the field of Tribology for heavy industries

engaged in Steel & other metals, Mining, Cement, Power, etc. It shall create awareness among participants

about the benefits of applying advanced Tribological practices in their respective fields which ultimately translate not only in improving reliability of machinery and cost saving but also into the saving of energy.

It will be dealing with various innovations in Tribology for energy saving in Heavy Industries. In addition to this, deliberations may also be made on some other topics of general interests. Some of the broad areas which may be covered in technical sessions are:

Engineers, scientists, academicians and practitioners in Tribology are invited to present papers in line with the

theme of the Seminar. Prospective contributors are requested to submit abstract of their paper in about 250 words to the Convenor latest by July 31, 2019. Contributors of the selected papers would be required to

submit manuscript of the full paper latest by August 31, 2019. Format of the paper shall be intimated to the

authors separately.

The seminar will endeavour to give preference to papers, which deal with new advancements and developments in the aforesaid areas. All papers shall be subjected to review by a Technical Committee and

shall be published in the Seminar Proceedings.

Ranchi is the capital of state of Jharkhand, which is endowed with rich iron ore and coal deposits. With its rich mineral resources and industrial base, Ranchi is rapidly developing into an important industrial sector in India.
