A Good CatchOld Forge’s Tansley named two-sport

all-state performerby Dave LaurihaTRIBORO BANNER WRITER

Last summer, Old Forge’s softballerTori Tansley was celebrating beingnamed to the Class A all-state secondteam as a catcher. Some nine months later, Tansley be-

came a two-sport all-state performer asthe senior was selected to the Pennsyl-vania Sportswriters Class A first team forleading the Lady Devils to a return ap-pearance in the state basketball final. Both of those accomplishments

seemed unlikely to Tansley, who concen-trated on hard work and not what the ac-complishments meant to her.“I didn’t make any all-star teams

around here,” Tansley said. “I was ex-pecting maybe second team or honorablemention. I didn’t have any idea leadingup to that.”But lo and behold, the senior got

the recognition that only she thoughtcouldn’t happen.“I was taken aback a little,” Tansley

said. “Everyone around me told me theyexpected it, but I guess I was in my ownlittle world and I didn’t realize it.”Her softball honor probably was a little

less surprising because Tansley has signedto play at the college level with Concor-dia and, for now, the basketball honor ismore cherished by the senior.“The first team in basketball means

more now,” Tansley said. “Softball comeseasier to me as a sport and we workedhard as a team to get back to Hershey soall that hard work paid off for us.”Setting a strong example and having

the respect of her teammates has giventhe senior the latitude to take charge onthe court and in the huddle. Everythingat Old Forge comes back to work ethic, heart and leadership and the hope thatwhat happens now will pay dividendsdown the road. Call it “paying it forward.”“We have a lot of young talent,” Tans-

ley said. “I hope I can help the girls in theyears to come.”That requires leadership, and the

Concordia-bound catcher has that inabundance. As the returning player who

saw the most playing time in the LadyDevils’ first run to the state Class A fi-nal in 2014, Tansley knew her teammateswould look to her for guidance and that’sexactly what she did.“I love that role,” Tansley said. That was never more evident that

in the state semifinal win over Portage, where Tansley led the Lady Devils backfrom a 17-point deficit in the secondquarter with 24 points after halftime in a45-42 double overtime win.“That was one of the craziest games

in my career, [there were] a lot of upsand downs in that game,” Tansley said.“Watching everybody around me, all ourfans who came, the student section, everyone on the bench from the coaches to theball girls, we knew we had to go out andsomehow pull out a win.”That never-say-die attitude paid off

as the Lady Devils won eight straightgames before losing the state final. Asit turned out, an inside joke among thegirls on the basketball team became anunlikely reality.“It was definitely a joke; we would be

joking around, the seniors and Gabby(Verespey, the lone junior starter), wouldbe like, ‘oh yeah, we’ll be just like lastyear and get back to Hershey’ and wewould laugh, and take it as a joke,” Tans-ley said.“It didn’t hit us until Friday (the day

before the state final); we didn’t quiterealize what we had done to get back toHershey,” she continued. “On the way toHershey, it sank in.”Returning to Hershey was the focus in

the playoffs, and Tansley’s effort againstPortage reminded Old Forge coach RonStacchiotti of the importance of lead-ership that Tansley owned among herteammates with her second-half effort.“In the second half, Tori was unstop-

pable,” said Stacchiotti, who earnedClass A Coach of the Year honors by thePennsylvania Sportswriters group. “Shejust wanted to win so bad; to get back toHershey so bad. They had no answer forher in the second half of that game.”While the season ended with a state

silver medal, it was nothing but a golden
