BY TIM ROWE | @ANZ_NEWS

It takes a special individual to take

on a challenge the enormity of a

thoroughbred stud. That goes for

anywhere, not least of all on the other

side of the world and at the age of 81, but that

is what American racing visionary B. Wayne

Hughes undertook in Australia almost seven

years ago.

Hughes died at his home on Spendthrift

Farm in Kentucky yesterday, aged 87,

surrounded by his family, triggering tributes

from industry figures from around the world.

Garry Cuddy, Spendthrift Australia

general manager, said US-based Hughes

would leave a long-lasting legacy on the

racing and breeding industry Down Under

despite the relatively short time which has

elapsed since the inception of his Australian

operation.

Cuddy yesterday reflected on Hughes,

a man who has undoubtedly left a big

impression on him since being called up out

of the blue to fly to America for an interview.

“The one thing I guess everybody would

know about Mr Hughes is how driven he was

to succeed,” Cuddy said.

“To be the best is really the only option

for him. He’s obviously got into the stallion

business later in life but he’s given it a fair

whack.”

That was at the forefront of Cuddy’s

mind when speaking to ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday, adding: “It’s not

been a great morning, that’s for sure, but he probably wouldn’t want it any

other way (and that is) we plough on. The breeding season is just around the

corner, he’d be telling us, so we’ve got to keep selling those nominations.”

Hughes established Spendthrift Australia in April 2015 after

purchasing Yallambee Stud at Romsey in Victoria from which his southern

hemisphere operation is based.

Opening an Australian arm came 11 years after Hughes, one of this

century’s most influential industry investors, took over and subsequently

rebuilt Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Kentucky.

He bought the farm in 2004 and moved from California to Kentucky

to indulge his passion for racing and breeding. He remained on the farm

until his death.

Hughes immediately set about redeveloping Spendthrift Farm by improving

its infrastructure and depth of its bloodstock. His blueprint was helped

immensely by stallions Malibu Moon (A.P. Indy) and twice reigning champion

Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday), but Cuddy was in no doubt that it was the

latter’s son Authentic (Into Mischief) who provided Hughes with his finest

moment in the industry when he won last year’s Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f).

“Malibu Moon was a homebred for Mr Hughes, so for him to become

the first stallion to come to Spendthrift (in 2008) and get to the levels that

he did (was special),” Cuddy said.

“For us to then be lucky enough to follow Malibu Moon up with a

horse like Into Mischief was a fantastic thing, but I definitely think the

icing on the cake for Mr Hughes was Authentic’s win in the Kentucky

Derby last year.

“That was the race he always wanted and it was a race he hadn’t had

very much luck in.

“Even on that day, he had a second runner in the race who gate

scratched in the saddling paddock (Thousand Words), so we thought,

‘here we go again’ but some of the footage that was circulated at that

time of Authentic’s win just showed how much the industry meant to Mr

Hughes and how much he just loved it.”

Hughes, who owned horses for five

decades, also raced the three-time Breeders’ Cup winner of 11 Grade 1

races, and 18 in total, in Beholder (Henny Hughes), who was one of only

three mares in history to be crowned a four-time Eclipse Award champion

in the years of 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016, a prize recognising the leading

horses in the US from across the different divisions.

Hughes employed Cuddy as Spendthrift Australia’s inaugural general

manager at the age of 27 on the recommendation of then Magic Millions

managing director Vin Cox and Chauncey Morris, the executive director

of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association.

“Ned Toffey rang me one day, our general manager from Kentucky,

and he said he’d been talking to Vin Cox who was obviously my first boss

in this industry and Chauncey Morris and they’d recommended me for

a role in the company in Australia and could I come up to Kentucky and

have an interview with them?” Cuddy recalled.

“I jumped on a plane two days later, went up and met Mr Hughes and

Ned. From the first time I met him, I knew that I liked him. He was such a

kind, generous man.

“The level of conversation that you could have with him went from

general chit chat through to boardroom level discussion and that could be

from sentence to sentence.

“He was a very inspiring man and it was great when I was able to get

up there and meet him and join the team.”

Under Cuddy’s leadership, Spendthrift Australia is now entering its most

exciting phase with Group 2-winning sprinter Dirty Work (Written Tycoon)

standing his first season at stud this year and the first two-year-olds by Overshare

(I Am Invincible), another yearling purchase, about to hit the racetrack.

However, Cuddy said the plan for Spendthrift Australia was not

initially the vision Hughes had for his racing and breeding interests in the

southern hemisphere but that it was his determination to achieve which

led to the stud’s establishment.

“We were just looking to have a couple

of stallions to shuttle down here and in the end Mr Hughes decided,

‘bugger this, I am going to do it myself and I am going to buy a farm’. He

employed me to do a job and the job changed pretty quickly but he stuck

by me and gave me an opportunity,” he said.

“Here we are seven years down the line and hopefully what we have been

able to achieve down here so far was good enough for him.

“I know we’ve got some pretty exciting horses on our stallion roster and

hopefully there’s an Into Mischief or Malibu Moon level of success for us still

to come in the future.”

Cuddy added: “It was a risk Mr Hughes was willing to take, he was willing to

set it all up and run the gauntlet that he would be here when the success started.

“Unfortunately, he won’t be here with us but his legacy will live on

through his family and through us down here. Hopefully we can get the end

result that he wanted for Australia and make him proud.”

Australian auction houses Magic Millions and Inglis were among the

bodies which paid tribute to Hughes upon learning of his death, as did

Thoroughbred Breeders Australia and Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria.

“TBV and the Victorian breeding industry are saddened to hear of the

passing of Mr B. Wayne Hughes of Spendthrift Farm,” TBV executive officer

Charmein Bukovec said.

“Mr Hughes established his Victorian farm in 2015 and his philosophy

was to always ensure that both breeders and horses were at the centre of

everything he did. His loss will be felt by many in the industry, especially

those who were close to him.”

The Hawkes family, which trained Overshare and Dirty Work for Hughes,

as well as a number of other horses, also gave their condolences to his family.

“Thank you for all the support that you have given us. Condolences to all

the family. Gone but never forgotten,” Hawkes Racing posted on Twitter.

Churchill Downs racetrack president Mike Anderson also paid tribute to

Hughes.

"The entire Churchill Downs family was saddened to learn about the

passing of legendary owner and breeder B. Wayne Hughes. Mr Hughes was a

visionary, who elevated Spendthrift Farm to new heights,” Anderson said.

“We take solace in knowing that he was able to enjoy and win America's

greatest race last September when Authentic led every step of the way to garner

the roses and solid gold Kentucky Derby trophy he coveted for many years.”

Hughes, who was born Bradley Wayne in 1933, turned his focus

to racing and breeding in 2002 after retiring from a successful business

career. Last year, the University Of Louisville honoured Hughes with the

Galbreath Award, a prize given to recognise entrepreneurial leadership in

the equine industry.

Upon receiving the award, Hughes said: "There are few thrills greater

than what horseracing can provide, and it is our responsibility to do a

better job of improving this great sport so that future generations can

enjoy it as much as I have."

76 for Dark AngelDark Angel (Acclamation) notched his 76th

individual stakes winner as a sire when Berdibek

(7 g ex Beraviyna by Zamindar) landed the

Rowley Mile (Listed, 1600m) at Hawkesbury

yesterday. The John O’Shea-trained gelding

scored by a neck under Brenton Avdulla, ahead of

Kukeracha (Night Of Thunder), with Surf Dancer

(Lope De Vega) three lengths behind in third. It

was the grey’s fifth career success and third since

arriving in Australia from France as a three-year-

old, where he registered two provincial wins and

a Listed placing in the silks of his breeder, the Aga

Khan. “Most importantly a lot of the credit must

go to Brenton, he’s ridden the horse very well,”

O’Shea said. “We were hopeful to be on the back of

James (McDonald, on Kukeracha) in the run and

that’s where we landed. He’s a deserved winner of

a Listed win in Australia. He’s been a little unlucky

but he’s been a really enjoyable horse for his

owners so I’m really happy for them.” Broadhurst

Agency purchased Berdibek for €220,000 out

of the Aga Khan Studs draft at the 2017 Arqana

Arc Sale. The northern hemisphere seven-year-

old’s dam, Beraviyna (Zamindar), is a half-sister

to the Hong Kong champion stayer Mighty High

(Peintre Celebre), winner of the Champions &

Chater Cup (Listed, 2400m) at Sha Tin and fourth

in the Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m). His second

dam, Bernimixa (Linamix) was a Group 2 winner

in France. Dark Angel stands at Yeomanstown

Stud at a 2021 fee of €60,000 (approx. AU$97,900).

Mo’unga barrier worries Berry Barrier 12 of 14 was not what Tommy Berry

was hoping for the Annabel Neasham-trained

Mo’unga (Savabeel) first-up for the term against

the likes of star mare Verry Elleegant (Zed) in

the Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick

tomorrow. "I would've liked him to have fared a

bit better in the barriers, drawing out where he

has has made our task a little bit more difficult,"

Berry told Racing.com. "It just means I've

probably got to ride him a little bit quieter than we

first would have liked, but that's without speaking

to Annabel yet." Barrier aside, Berry is pleased

with last season’s Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m)

winner. "I've only had the one sit on him, but he's

always been renowned as a pretty poor worker

and a pretty poor trialler, but I think watching

his trial, he wasn't getting ridden along, which is

very good for him, and in his trackwork, he did

it much easier than he has done in the past, so

he's obviously matured quite well, he's had that

break," he said. The four-year-old, an $8 chance,

was last seen racing when last of seven behind

Addeybb (Pivotal) in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes

(Gr 1, 2000m) in April. "He's got a big step up to

make,” Berry added. “Up against these weight-

for-age horses, he got found out in the Queen

Elizabeth a little bit, but I do believe he's made a

lot of improvement since then.”

Cummings keen on CascadianGodolphin’s Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner

Cascadian (New Approach) will bid to win the first

Group 1 of the season tomorrow when taking on

the Winx Stakes, and his trainer James Cummings

is keen on the seven-year-old’s chances. “He well

and truly has to measure up to top class weight-

for-age horses here,’’ Cummings told Racing

NSW. “But with his performances in the George

Ryder and the All Aged Stakes, combined with the

meat in the sandwich which was his Doncaster

victory, he’s got the credentials to be highly

competitive. I think he is going particularly well,

I must say 1400 metres first-up is an attractive set

up for him.” Cascadian, who finished fourth in

the George Ryder (Gr 1, 1500m) and third in the

All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in addition to his

Doncaster success, will be set for the George Main

Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and will be given his chance

to achieve a Doncaster and Epsom Handicap (Gr

1, 1600m) double. “This campaign will well and

truly be an opportunity for Cascadian to convert

that expectation into more silverware for the

Edgecliff cabinet,’’ Cummings added.

Sargent filly to make her moveJohn Sargent has always believed Four Moves

Ahead (Snitzel) would improve as a three-year-

old and expectations about her future are high

ahead of her first-up run in the Silver Shadow

Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick tomorrow.

“She’s done very well with the age change, she’s

grown and matured a lot mentally,’’ Sargent told

Racing NSW. “You’ll see a lot bigger and stronger

filly this time in. Touch wood, she’s injury free this

time, we were always half a step behind last time

but she’s had a trouble free run this prep.” The

filly’s past issues included a cold and a knock to

her knee two days before the Silver Slipper (Gr 2,

1100m), forcing her to be scratched. The Sweet

Embrace Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner charged

home from near the tail in a trial at Randwick on

August 6. “Another horse half came across and

because it was only a trial he (Nash Rawiller)

didn’t bustle her, she just relaxed beautifully and

hit the line strong when he asked for a bit,’’ Sargent

continued. Four Moves Ahead is a $2 chance this

time and could go on to the Flight Stakes (Gr 1,

1600m). “She can relax so we’ll jump and work it

out, either glide on over or settle in somewhere,’’

the trainer added. “There’s a good run down the

back and she’s won over the course and distance.”

Mallory the apple of Ryan’s eyeGerald Ryan believes his star three-year-old

filly Mallory (Not A Single Doubt) is in great

order ahead of her first-up assignment in

tomorrow’s Silver Shadow Stakes."She didn't

come in carrying huge weight and (Arrowfield

Stud's) Paul Messara, because he spelled her

and pre-trained her, he was a bit worried

about it. But I said, 'don't worry about it, each

preparation she's had, she's done better in

work than what she's done out of work'," said

Ryan, who trains in partnership with Sterling

Alexiou. Mallory raced four times as a juvenile,

winning the Widden Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) and

placing in the Gimcrack (Gr 3, 1000m) and

Sweet Embrace Stakes before a luckless ninth

in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m). "She

wasn't a precocious, running two-year-old. She

always gave the impression she'd get better as

she got older. That's why we were only very light

on her as a two-year-old," Ryan continued.

The Silver Shadow is the first leg in the four-

race Princess Series for three-year-old fillies.

Mallory has drawn barrier seven in a field of

12. "Even though she's shown more speed this

time in than she did last time, I'm not going to

be changing her racing pattern in this race. She

will just begin and find her feet, let the speed

go and try to have the last crack at them. She's

forward enough and fresh enough if she's good

enough," he added.

Entriviere under injury cloudInjury has cast a shadow over Entriviere

(Tavistock)’s first-up run in the Toy Show

Quality (Gr 3, 1100m) at Randwick tomorrow

after she was found to have mild lameness in

her off-fore following trackwork at the course

yesterday morning. The mare’s trainer Jamie

Richards informed Racing NSW stewards of

the situation and will provide them with an

update on the five-year-old’s condition today,

after a stable vet applied a poultice to the foot.

Entriviere, runner-up behind Fasika (So You

Think) in the Sapphire Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at

Randwick back in April, will be subject to an

inspection by Racing NSW general manager

of veterinary services Dr Toby Koenig prior to

racing tomorrow. Should Entriviere get the all-

clear, Richards has advised stewards that the

intention is to ride the Kiwi raider with cover

from the outside barrier.

Richards’ mare seeks InvitationThe $2 million Invitation (1400m) at Randwick

on October 23 is the big target for Entriviere

should she come through her Group 3

assignment tomorrow. Richards is looking

to take in the likes of the Sheraco Stakes (Gr

2, 1200m) on September 11 and the Golden

Pendant (Gr 2, 1400m) on September 25 to earn

the New Zealand mare’s place in the field of 12.

“She’s got great form, she’s had seven starts and

been beaten twice,” Richards told Racing NSW.

“On those occasions she’s run second sitting

deep in one and had a nightmare run in the

other. I don’t think there’s any doubt she’s good

enough to be there. She’s a very competitive

mare. We think she is a mare with real speed

and real ability. Although Saturday looks to

me a hard race to win, it should give her a nice

grounding for, hopefully, a good preparation.”

Entriviere drew widest of 14 when second in

the Sapphire Stakes and will break from widest

in barrier 19, under top-weight of 59 kilograms,

should she make the Toy Show Quality. “At

the beginning of a nice preparation with a bit

of weight on our back we’ll take our time and

certainly be telling the stewards we’ll be riding

for cover,” he added. Entriviere posted an easy

trial win over 900 metres at Ellerslie on August 3.

Splintex on right course for dynamic return

Splintex (Snitzel) will contest the Show County

Quality (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick tomorrow

and aim to maintain his unbeaten record over

the course and distance. The five-year-old has

recorded his two most significant victories at

the course and distance, in the 2020 Arrowfield

3YO Sprint Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and the Hall

Mark Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). "It's the track

and distance that suits him. He's just a good,

genuine, on-pace, talented horse," said his

trainer Mark Newnham. Splintex hasn’t raced

since finishing down the track behind Baller

(High Chaparral) at Eagle Farm in June. "He is

generally better after a run but this time around,

he's coming off a lot shorter break. He has had

more of a freshen-up than a spell. He did win

the Arrowfield off a seven-week break." Splintex

meets 11 rivals tomorrow, headed by Doncaster

Mile runner-up Icebath (Sacred Falls). "He'll

have his first couple of runs in Sydney and we

have taken him to Melbourne previously, but

he tends not to go well around Caulfield and

Moonee Valley, so I may look for a couple of

races down the straight for him in Cup week,"

Newnham added.

Esta La Roca ready for The ValleyEsta La Roca (El Roca) will attempt to nail a

first stakes success at Moonee Valley tomorrow

when she takes in the Carlyon Stakes (Listed,

1000m). The Lloyd Kennewell-trained four-

year-old was third in the Lightning Stakes

(Listed, 1050m) at Morphettville last time. "She's

more suited at 1000 metres than 1050 metres,

and to top it off, she got a Heavy 10,” Kennewell

told Racing.com. "For mine, it was a very good

run because she really gave a good kick when

she straightened, she was gunned down by

one of the most promising horses in Australia

in Beau Rossa, and I thought she was probably

just out on her feet the last 75 metres, which

on a Heavy 10 over a trip that was probably a

fraction further than what we would have liked

for her, I thought she was good." Beau Rossa

(Unencumbered) franked the form when a

close second to Group 1 winner Behemoth (All

Too Hard) in the Spring Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m)

last weekend. "The form is good all around her,

she's a very good short-course horse around

Moonee Valley and her work there yesterday

morning was first class, I was very happy with it

leading into a race of that quality on Saturday,"

Kennewell added. Joe Bowditch will ride from

barrier six and the mare is a $17 chance.

Express Pass chases stakes winRhys McLeod will reunite with the talented

Express Pass (Wandjina) in tomorrow’s Carlyon

Stakes where the Nick Ryan-trained gelding

will be aiming for his first stakes win when

returning from a freshen-up having not raced

since finishing fifth at Flemington behind the re-

opposing Kalkarni Royale (Nicconi). "After his last

some time in the paddock,”said Ryan. “He's had

one little soft jump-out on the course proper and

we took him to The Valley on Tuesday and we've

got him fresh and bouncing for Saturday. It looks

like it will be a high-pressure race. He's always

shown good ability and would be up to this at

his best, it's just whether he's in touch with them

and they come back to him." McLeod has ridden

Express Pass to two of his four wins from 16 starts.

"Rhys rode his work at The Valley on Tuesday and

was happy with how he went. I think there is a

good race in him. He's been stuck in the 80s with

his rating and with the set-weights here he gets a

bit of relief. He's super and I think he's going the

best he's ever gone."

Jigsaw blinker test

Cindy Alderson is awaiting a clean scope which

will enable Jigsaw (Manhattan Rain) to take

his place at Moonee Valley tomorrow. The colt

became cast in his stable in the lead up to the

Vain Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) and took some skin

off his nose. Alderson said the abrasion was not

hugely worrying but added she is cautious about

discharge from a nostril which could indicate a

sinus problem. "We've scoped him, it's cleared

up nicely and it's just a bit of bark off and we

didn't want to take the risk that close to the race

last week," the trainer told RSN Sport 927. After

a good week at home in Cranbourne, Jigsaw

is expected to line up in the McKenzie Stakes

(Listed, 1200m) and will wear blinkers for the

first time. "The key with him will be to see him

with the blinkers on. He looks a different horse,

a more professional horse when he's got them

on,” Alderson continued. “He's worked in them a

few times now and from all reports they help him

switch off and focus on what his job is. I'd like to

see him camp off the speed, follow them into the

race, come out and use that turn of foot that he's

got and ping over the top of them."

Godolphin fillies set to meetGodolphin hold a strong hand in the Roll The Dice

Racing Plate (1200m) at Moonee Valley tomorrow

with Zapateo (Brazen Beau) and Sliders (Street

Boss) both engaged in the sprint contest for three-

year-old fillies. But trainer James Cummings has

cautioned that Zapateo might have come to the

end of her preparation and Sliders might find the

1200-metre trip too far first-up. Zapateo kicked off

her career with a win in maiden grade at Geelong

in June before running second over 1100 metres

at Caulfield and then posting a win at Moonee

Valley on July 31. "She is proven at the track, and

she's got to get up and do it over six furlongs, but I

don't think that should be too much of a problem

for her," Cummings told RSN Sport 927. Sliders

has finished unplaced in two starts at 1200 metres.

"I probably would have preferred 1000 or 1100

metres, but we did not quite have that race for her

outside of the Quezette up against a couple of our

other fillies last week. So, we waited for this race

and are prepared to tackle the 1200,” Cummings

continued. “She is a small, quick filly and the

question is whether or not she has the depth to

perform over 1200 first-up. It's an interesting race

for both fillies. They are just a kilo above the limit,

having a decent enough record behind them.”

Mcdonagh expects Lonsdale Lady to bounce backAfter taking hold of her rider on the way to the

start, Lonsdale Lady (Maschino) was a late

scratching at her most recent outing at Belmont

Park and the mishap left her trainer Kieran

McDonagh wondering. "I honestly can't work

it out. She's never done it before and it was

completely out of character. She pulled up fine

and there were no issues with her, she hardly

had a blow. She's been completely vetted and

we can't find anything wrong with her. I guess

you have to put it down to one of those things

that can happen,” said McDonagh. Last time she

raced, Lonsdale Lady charged home from the rear

of the field to defeat Zaratite (Animal Kingdom)

by a neck. The pair finished eight lengths clear

of third place getter Bad Wolf (So You Think), a

subsequent winner two weeks ago. Tomorrow she

will line up in the Amelia Park-Blue Spec Stakes

(1600m) at Belmont where Lucy Warwick will ride

her, replacing the suspended Shaun O'Donnell.

Nikau Spur impresses at Sandown

New Zealand import Nikau Spur (Proisir), now

under the watch of co-trainers Ciaron Maher

and David Eustace, picked up his fourth career

victory when successful over 1500 metres at

Sandown on Wednesday in the hands of jockey

John Allen. “He is a funny horse,” Eustace told

Racing.com. “He does need everything to go

his way in preparation to a race and in the run

as well. He enjoys a bit of cover. He quickens up

on slow ground really well, which is probably

pretty key.” Eustace believes the variety in Nikau

Spur’s training has also benefited the gelding.

“He seems to like being down at the beach,”

he continued. “The team have done a great job

down there with him. He has been coming into

the stable and spending some time at Caulfield

as well.” Eustace said finding suitable conditions

will be key going forward. “He just doesn’t want

it really firm,” he continued. “We have probably

got to pick our way a little bit, but he could travel

up to Sydney as well. It’s been seven weeks

between his last run and today so it shows he

doesn’t need racing to keep him up to the mark.

We can be patient and tick him over and he is

going to go up a bit today and it will be lovely if

we can find a 78 over a similar trip.”

Mile to suit Cherry TortoniCherry Tortoni (Night Of Thunder) headlined

trainer Patrick Payne’s 21 trialists at Tatura on

Wednesday with the handler searching for a

first-up opportunity with the-four-year-old as

he looks to keep his Adelaide Guineas (Listed,

1600m) winner to a mile this campaign. After

running second in the Australian Guineas

(Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington last autumn, the

handler tested his charge over further in the

Alister Clark Stakes (Gr 2, 2040m) and Tulloch

Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) before dropping back to a

mile last time at Morphettville. "We're not sure

where to kick him off, there isn't really a suitable

race for him first-up," Payne told Racing.com.

"There is a race at Flemington, The Sofitel

1400 metres, then a race at Sandown over 1500

metres. I was just going to let him run around

over 1100 metres, but I think that will be a non-

event. Whether he just needs that to keep him

sharp and have a gallop that's OK, or whether

we go into Flemington with just another trial

or a gallop somewhere." Cherry Tortoni was a

quiet seventh in his 1000-metre trial. "He's a

laidback character and I think his trials have

been fair," admitted Payne. "I think he's going

to be better as an autumn four-year-old rather

than a spring four-year-old. I don't think we

are going to have anything too ambitious this

preparation and not too many runs.”

Anamoe suffers setback

James Cummings revealed yesterday that ATC

Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner

Anamoe (Street Boss) had suffered an elevated

temperature overnight, leaving plans for his spring

campaign uncertain. The Caulfield Guineas (Gr

1, 1600m) and the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1,

1400m) remain targets for the three-year-old,

but Cummings said he would have to ease off

the colt in the coming weeks. The trainer told

RSN yesterday that he was ‘open minded’ about

Anamoe’s spring campaign and was ‘willing to

let the horse’s preparation unfold for us’. “There’s

all sorts of different variables that might throw

a spanner in the works but at the moment the

concentration on the Golden Rose and Caulfield

Guineas is very important,” he added.

Trekking likely to fill Godolphin Everest slotDespite an abundance of three-year-old riches

to call upon, it looks likely Godolphin will give

the nod to seven-year-old Trekking (Street Cry)

as their Everest (1200m) runner this year. The

gelding finished third in 2019 and fourth in

2020 in the $15 million feature, with Godolphin

managing director Vin Cox suggesting he

remains their top sprinter. Trekking, who

hasn’t won since landing the Goodwood (Gr 1,

1200m) in May 2020, has returned to full work

at Osborne Park.

Remarque to prove Everest credentials John Messara believes Remarque (Snitzel) can

emerge as a serious prospect for The Everest

when he contests the San Domenico Stakes

(Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill a week tomorrow. The

Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) remains Remarque's

immediate target but the colt’s managing

owner is looking to the lucrative feature, for

which his Arrowfield Stud holds a stake in The

Star's vacant slot. Remarque raced twice last

year when he followed an impressive debut

win with a solid fifth in the Todman Stakes (Gr

2, 1200m). He made his three-year-old bow at

Randwick on August 7 when an unlucky third

in the Rosebud (Listed 1100m). "The best horse

we have is Remarque," Messara told RSN927.

"He was mortally unlucky last week I reckon

when he couldn't get a run on the inside and

virtually got stopped in his tracks. I'm hoping

that next week in the San Domenico - it'll be

a tougher field because I think the Golden

Slipper winner (Stay Inside) will be there - he'll

show us he's up to the standard we think he's

at. Initially, the Golden Rose (is his aim) but

we could add The Everest to that program if he

shows us some dominance next week over that

1100-metre distance. I think he's going to prove

himself to be an exceptional three-year-old but

that's still to be seen at the races."

Memsie for Pannell and BeauTodd Pannell is preparing to miss three Adelaide

meetings to ride exciting four-year-old Beau

Rossa (Unencumbered) in the Memsie Stakes

(Gr 1, 1400m)) at Caulfield a week tomorrow.

“It’s obviously all still dependent on what’s

happening in Melbourne but at this stage I’m

hoping to ride the horse in the Memsie and then

quarantine for two weeks at home,’’ Pannell told

RacingSA. Pannell notched his 1,000th career win

at Morphettville last weekend and he will stick

with the four-year-old, who beat home Behemoth

(All Too Hard) in last weekend’s Spring Stakes (Gr

3, 1200m) before losing the race on protest. “I’ve

always thought he was right up there with the best

horses I’ve ridden,’’ Pannell continued. “He’d be

right up there alongside Behemoth. Bella Vella

was a very nice horse, but he’s always given me

the impression he can be top class. He’s pulled up

well from the Spring Stakes, he fought hard when

he was put under pressure and I’m sure he can

measure-up in Melbourne.”

Stephens eyes Kalgoorlie CupA Kalgoorlie Cup (Listed, 2000m) campaign goes

on the line for Scintillating (Blackfriars) when the

gelding lines up in the BHP Newman Cup (2100m)

at Mt Newman tomorrow. Trainer Matthew

Stephens believes the seven-year-old deserves a

go in the iconic race after consecutive seconds at

Port Hedland, in the Ladies Day Cup (2050m) and

behind Staaden (Blackfriars) in the Port Hedland

Cup (2200m). “He is going well, but we avoided

the Broome Cup because we thought it would be

stronger,” Stephens told The Races WA. “When

Staaden won the Broome Cup it was pretty good,

we knew we weren’t far behind the eight ball. We

thought Staaden was good, but there were going

to be some more handy ones up there. Rather

than run a good fourth or fifth and even place, we

wanted to go confidently towards the Newman

Cup. After Staaden’s run in the Broome Cup we go

into Saturday’s race with confidence. Hopefully it

all goes well and if he’s up to the mark he can go to

Kal (Kalgoorlie). I will talk to the owners and it’s a

plan I could put in place.”

Nash Rawiller out through injuryNash Rawiller was taken to hospital after

sustaining an injury at Hawkesbury's Rowley

Mile meeting yesterday and was found to have

suffered an undisplaced fracture with an open

wound over the fracture. The rider went into

theatre on Thursday evening to wash out the

wound, with his foot expected to be placed in

a boot. Rawiller’s injury will be assessed next

week by Dr Tim Musgrove. The top jockey was

leaving the mounting yard aboard the Gerald

Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained Fine Ruby

(Rubick) prior to the opening race when his foot

became jammed against a fence. He dismounted

and was attended to by paramedics with Racing

NSW stewards confirming in an initial statement

that he was taken to the local hospital to have

the injury assessed. "Jockey Nash Rawiller has

sustained a laceration to his right foot after

becoming wedged by his mount prior to race one

at Hawkesbury on Thursday," the statement said.

Rawiller was replaced on his remaining rides and

will miss the first Group 1 meeting of the season at

Randwick. His booked rides tomorrow included

veteran Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock) in the feature

Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Four Moves Ahead

(Snitzel), who is an even-money favourite for the

Silver Shadow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m).

Messara to draw line in the sand John Messara is two months into his tenure as the

chairman of Racing Australia and has admitted

that attempts to unite the states, particularly

New South Wales and Victoria, is proving to be

frustrating. "There is an impasse and we've got to

break this impasse, which I'm working daily on,"

Messara said on RSN927. He is hoping to bring

together the leaders of each racing authority in

the coming months. "It has been a bit difficult,

I must say, and people are stuck in their views

on various sides, but we've got to rule a line in

the sand and work together. We have to have a

board meeting sooner rather than later because

there are issues that need attention. I'm the

independent chairman and I'm trying to take

an independent view on everything." The future

health of Australian racing's Pattern has come

under the microscope in recent times. "We do

need a pattern, it's critical I think to the industry

and to our linkage with industry worldwide.

It's very important that it remains a moving

thing so we can improve it, whilst sticking to

the guidelines, to ensure that it's meaningful,”

Messara continued. "It needs to be a rational,

consistent pattern and that's a process we're

going through at the moment to determine what

changes, if any, should be made."

Leneva Park latest stud to cancel stallion parade Leneva Park Stud in Victoria has cancelled its

stallion parade scheduled for August 29 due to the

current Covid-19 restrictions in the Melbourne

metro area. But the farm will instead provide

opportunities for private inspections of its two

stallions, Fierce Impact (Deep Impact) and Royal

Meeting (Invincible Spirit). Appointments can

be made by contacting Mitchell Brown or Brian

Byrnes and Covid restrictions and protocols

will apply. The farm’s general enquiries phone

number is 0421 912 218.

Aquis extend Spieth dealAquis Farm will extend an innovative offer to

breeders for their dual Group 1-placed stallion

Spieth (Thorn Park), whereby if the resulting

foal is not of the desired sex for the breeder, no

service fee is payable. That promotion was due to

come to an end however, after ‘unprecedented

demand’, the stud farm announced yesterday

that the deal has been extended until the end

of August. Spieth’s first yearlings sold for up to

$180,000 earlier this year, as the stallion enters

his fourth season at stud, standing at a fee of

$8,800 (inc GST).

Hawkesbury and Newcastle switch datesRacing NSW has advised of a switching of dates

for meetings at Hawkesbury and Newcastle in the

upcoming period, with Hawkesbury now hosting

the August 31 card instead of Newcastle, while

racing on Saturday, September 4 will now take

place at Newcastle after being transferred from

Hawkesbury. As a result, several race distances

have been amended. Race 1 at Hawkesbury on

August 31 will now be run over 1100 metres from

the originally stated 1200 metres, while the class

1 and maiden plate has been extended to 2000

metres from 1850 metres and the three-year-old

maiden plate will now be run over 1000 metres,

from 900 metres. At Newcastle on September 4,

the following amendments have been made; the

class 1 and maiden plate will now be run over

1850 metres (from 2000 metres), while the four-

year-old and up maiden plate and the three-year-

old maiden plate, both previously programmed

as 1000-metre races, will now be over 900 metres.

NEW ZEALAND

Tivaci on a roll with homebred winner

Waikato Stud’s Tivaci (High Chaparral) sired his

third winner in eight days after his three-year-old

daughter Never Been Kissed dived late to snare

a 1000-metre maiden on debut at Hawkesbury

yesterday. The difference between Tivaci’s first

two winners and Never Been Kissed is that the

latter races in the Waikato Stud colours belonging

to Garry and Mark Chittick. The filly had shown

some promising trial form against several well-

performed opponents including Listed winner

Najmaty (I Am Invincible). She is also very

nicely related, descending from Waikato Stud’s

foundation mare, Georgina Belle (Pakistan II).

Her dam is Movie, a Moonee Valley winner by

Savabeel (Zabeel) and whose baby sister, It Might

Be You, was recently named ANZ Bloodstock

News’ Maiden of the Week. They are three-quarter

sisters to triple Group 2 winner Ocean Emperor

(Zabeel) plus blood-sisters to New Zealand Oaks

(Gr 1, 2400m) winner Savvy Coup (Savabeel).

Never Been Kissed’s granddam, Mannerism

Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) winner Tootsie (Pins) is

also a three-quarter sister to the dam of star mare

Probabeel (Savabeel). Never Been Kissed is her

dam’s first foal. She has a two-year-old colt by

Sacred Falls (O’Reilly) and the mare was covered

by Ocean Park (Thorn Park) in 2020.

Cup hope Sherwood Forest set for reappearance

Tony Pike is hopeful that tomorrow’s Cambridge

meeting will go ahead and give his Melbourne

Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) candidate Sherwood Forest

(Fastnet Rock) a chance to get his preparation

up and running in the Waikato-BOP Harness

Racing Handicap (1300m) on the synthetic.

The meeting needs the Covid alert level to drop

from Level 4 to to Level 3, if it is to go ahead as

planned. “If not, you’d hope the levels could

drop to three on Sunday and the meeting could

be moved to Monday,” Pike said. New Zealand

Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Sherwood Forest

impressed with a three and a half-length trial

win on the all-weather track at Cambridge

earlier this month. “A 1300-metre race on the

synthetic is something at least for him to kick

off in, then he can head over to Flemington for

a 1700-metre handicap on September 11. It’s a

race The Chosen One won last year on his way

to the Melbourne Cup,” Pike continued. “He’s

flying. He’s going as well as he ever has. At his

best, he’s going to be competitive over there.

All going well, he’ll continue down a cups path

but if he doesn’t measure up, there are plenty

of options for him over there just below the

top grade. The Melbourne Cup is the dream

for anyone. He’s nominated and if he keeps his

form and qualifies, he’ll run.”

Sharrock hoping trio can returnAllan Sharrock has his fingers crossed that

tomorrow’s fixture at New Plymouth will

go ahead. The handler has three entrants

including Collinstreet (Bachelor Duke) in the

New Plymouth ITM Interprovincial (1600m)

under top-weight of 60 kilograms, although

apprentice Callum Jones will knock off three

kilograms. “That takes him three (kilograms)

off the minimum, so that is going to put him

in the race at the right weight,” Sharrock said.

The trainer said punters can forget his last-start

ninth at Otaki. The stable’s London Express

(Shamexpress) will tackle the ITM Winstone

(1300m) where apprentice Bailey Rogerson will

provide three kilograms of relief from her 61.5

kilogram impost. “Bailey has only had two rides

for me for two wins,” Sharrock continued. “It

was hard to find another four-kilo claimer and

she has done a good job on Justaskme and Tavi

Mac, so I have elected to put her on. London

Express races really well at New Plymouth

and two starts back she ran second in a Listed

race (Opunake Cup, 1400m) with 57 kilograms

on her back.” Penelope Cruise (Ocean Park)

completes the trio in the ITM Makita 2000. “I

couldn’t have her any fitter,” Sharrock added.

“She is tough and does like it very heavy, which

it is going to be on Saturday. I can see her racing

really well again.”

Group 1-winning trainer Campbell announces retirementAndrew Campbell has retired from the training

ranks at age 54. Campbell, who trained the

Group 1-winning sprinter-miler Tavistock

(Montjeu), recently sold the property that he

bought in 2017 after training from Masterton’s

Opaki racecourse for more than 20 years. The

former plumber developed and traded horses in

the Wairarapa before shifting focus to training.

He was the trainer and part-owner of Tavistock,

who sired Campbell’s New Zealand Cup (Gr

3, 3200m) winner Gobstopper and his brother

Werther, a dual Derby placegetter in Australia

and a champion in Hong Kong. Earlier this

month, Campbell pleaded guilty to presenting a

horse at a Cambridge trial meeting in May with a

banned substance in its system, incurring a fine

of $2,500. “I had already made up my mind to

finish in November, but when they came at me

like that, I decided I’d had enough, that was the

final nail in the coffin,” Campbell said. “Life as a

trainer is a big enough battle without having to

deal with that sort of stuff. Staffing and costs that

just keep going up are making it impossible. My

family and I have to work every Sunday because

the cost of employing people is simply too much,

so now I’m actually looking forward to packing

up and heading back to the Wairarapa to enjoy

life. Racing has been a wonderful game. I’ve had

plenty of good times with some fantastic people

who have become lifetime friends.”

JPN: Loves readies for returnLoves Only You (Deep Impact) stretched out on

the Hakodate woodchip for her final fast work

hot edition of the Sapporo Kinen (Gr 2, 2000m)

at Sapporo on Sunday. The mare was not asked

to do much but still strode out easily as she

prepared for her first outing since she sealed

victory in the QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Sha Tin

in April. The Yoshito Yahagi-trained five-year-

old is set to face the white wonder mare Sodashi

INTERNATIONAL

Sensational Snowfall storms to third Oaks success at York Snowfall (3 f Deep Impact - Best In The

World by Galileo) posted another brilliant

performance to win the Yorkshire Oaks (Gr 1,

1m 4f) at York yesterday. The three-year-old,

successful with wide-margin wins previously

in the Epsom Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) and Irish

Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f), met older rivals for the

first time and brushed them aside with ease.

Ryan Moore’s mount raced back in the field

behind a solid pace, swept to the lead without

pressure halfway down the home straight and

galloped clear for a four-length verdict over

the runner-up Albaflora (Muhaarar), with the

front-running La Jaconde (Frankel) a further

two and three-quarter lengths behind in third.

“It was a truly-run race,” Moore said. “The race

was as good as over at the four (furlong pole).

She felt exceptional today: the last two furlongs

there was no real serious question asked, the

damage was done in the middle part. She was

exceptional today and she has been for her last

three runs.” Snowfall’s dam, the Group 3 winner

Best In The World (Galileo) is a sister to the

champion mare Found, being out of the Group

1-winning mare Red Evie (Intikhab). Snowfall

was bred in Japan after Coolmore sent Best In

The World east to be covered by the great Deep

Impact (Sunday Silence), who died in July 2019.

UK: Dawson delivers Zain Claudette for Lowther winZain Claudette (2 f No Nay Never - Claudette

by Speightstown) sealed a hat-trick of wins

and gave jockey Ray Dawson his biggest

career success when landing the Lowther

Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at York yesterday. The Ismail

Mohammed-trained filly was a narrow winner

of the Princess Margaret Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at

Ascot at her previous start and showed battling

qualities again this time. The 6-1 shot raced

handily, was shaken up two out, hit the lead

at the furlong pole and kept on to hold the

race favourite Sandrine (Bobby’s Kitten) by a

length. Desert Dreamer (Oasis Dream) was

a further two lengths behind in third. “To be

getting this opportunity on a big stage, not even

a week after I lost my claim, you couldn’t write

it,” Dawson said. “She’s so tough. She worked

on the weekend and she worked incredibly

well but I didn’t want to get too excited. She’s

definitely capable of going for Group 1 glory

now. I think she’ll go for the Cheveley (Park

Stakes).” Bred by Andriy Milovanov, the winner

was passed in at €58,000 at Goffs in November

2019 but sold as a yearling at the 2020 Goffs UK

Premier to Rabbah Bloodstock for £20,000. Her

dam, Claudette (Speightstown), was a four-

time winner in Poland and is a daughter of

US Grade 3 winner Tippity Witch (Affirmed).

Her sire No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) stands at

Coolmore, Ireland at a 2021 fee of €125,000

(approx. AU$203,895).

UK: Hello Youmzain half-sister wins on debutA low-key maiden at Carlisle on Wednesday

presented a filly with a high profile pedigree,

and she duly turned heads with a resounding

victory. Hala Hala Athmani (Dabirsim), a half-

sister to Cambridge Stud’s Group 1-winning

stallion Hello Youmzain (Kodiac), scored by

five and a half lengths on debut at the north

west track as the 11-8 favourite for trainer Kevin

Ryan. The sixth winner for unraced Shamardal

(Giant’s Causeway) mare Spasha, the filly is also

a half-sister to Group 2 winner Royal Youmzain

(Youmzain) and Listed winner Zuhoor

Baynoona (Elnadim). She is a homebred for

Rabbah Bloodstock, racing in the colours of

Jaber Abdullah.

UK: Early favourite Live Your Dream first reserve for Ebor Live Your Dream (Iffraaj), pre-post favourite

for tomorrow’s Ebor Handicap (1m 6f) at

York, has only managed to fill the position of

first reserve after declarations were revealed

for the 22-runner race yesterday. Historically

an important lead-up race for horses with

spring carnival ambitions, this year the Ismail

Mohammed-trained Melbourne Cup- (Gr

1, 3200m) aspirant Away He Goes (Farhh)

takes on the prestigious handicap, having

been expected tackle the Prix Kergorlay (Gr 2,

3000m) at Deauville. "We intended to run him

in the Prix Kergorlay at Deauville this weekend

but the ground is too soft out there for him. The

decent ground will be ideal for him and he's

in great form. It's a competitive handicap but

he'll love the track and big field. Hopefully he

has a good chance,” Mohammed said. The OTI

Racing-owned Mirann (Motivator) has also

been declared, with Epsom Derby- (Gr 1, 1m

4f) winning jockey Adam Kirby in the saddle for

the Johnny Murtagh-trained five-year-old.

MAIDEN OF THE WEEK

| 16 |

A Deep Field (Northern Meteor)

colt made heads turn at Ballarat

on Monday after Red Hawk

demolished his opposition to

win by a resounding six lengths on debut in

the maiden plate over 1000 metres, with the

manner of victory enough for co-trainer Tony

McEvoy to tout him as a potential Coolmore

Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) contender.

Sent off the $1.45 favourite to score after

an emphatic win at the Ballarat jump-outs on

August 3, Red Hawk gave his backers an initial

scare after shifting out after jumping from the

widest gate, but he soon showed blistering

speed to hit the front, and never looked back,

stretching clear under Luke Currie, who never

fully switched to top gear.

"I think he'll figure in some nice races in the

spring,” said Tony McEvoy in the aftermath of

the race. “Will he end up running in a Coolmore

(Stud Stakes)? I don't know. We're going to give

him the opportunity and he's pretty good.

"He's a horse we love but of course there's

butterflies when you bring a really good-quality

colt to the races that he doesn't make any

mistakes. We just needed to see that on game-

day pressure and I was suitably impressed with

him.”

Purchased by McEvoy-Mitchell Racing

and Belmont Bloodstock for $260,000 from the

Newhaven Park draft at the Inglis Classic Sale, the

colt has a pedigree to live up to, being out of a half-

sister to dual Group 1 winner Zipping (Danehill).

He is a further notable runner out of a

Foxwedge (Danehill) mare who, after so far

leaving four Group 1-winning fillies as a sire,

can count six winners as a broodmare sire,

including black-type siblings Diabolic (Dark

Angel) and McManaman, and impressive

metropolitan winner Bourbon Flyer (Flying

Artie), as well as Monday’s winner Red Hawk.

Red Hawk races in the colours of Seymour

Bloodstock, who acquired the colt after he

became available as a young horse.

"I had an ownership change in this horse

recently through a deceased estate so I just want

to say a big thank you to Mark Pilkington and

Darren Thomas of Seymour Bloodstock and

Wayne Mitchell, who is my business partner,

and Cameron Arthur as they stepped up and

said 'We'll buy this colt',” McEvoy said.

“They've got a good one.”

Analysis: BERDIBEK recorded his fifth win and his first at stakes level in 27 starts in scoring here. Coming back in distance after finishing a close-up fourth in the Grafton Cup (Listed, 2350m) on July 8, he was slowly away and settled in second last place on the rails, tracking a fast pace (first 1000m 58.54). He took a ground-saving split rounding the turn, challenged on the inner at the 200m and fought best to win well. It was also a good ride by Brenton Avdulla. Kukeracha settled towards the tail of the field on the rails. James McDonald steered him along the rails nearing the turn, switched into clear running on straightening to challenge shortly afterwards. He then fought really well for (neck) second in a good effort at his first start since winning the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Eagle Farm in June. Surf Dancer had a nice trip in seventh place on the rails before moving up at the turn. He put in

his bid at the 200m and kept battling on well to take the minor placing in another sound effort at his third Australian start. Blue Soldier raced in second place, chasing the tearaway leader (Whasir). He moved up at the turn and then held on quite well for (4.3 lengths) fourth. Riodini settled midfield, improved (wide out) at the turn and steadily made ground to finish (5.2 lengths) fifth. [KB]

VERDICT A fascinating race, not least because of the scorching gallop thatis anticipated and likely to be headed by US raider Golden Pal.

He is highly regarded by trainer Wesley Ward, who has had loads of success inBritain, and could be tough to reel in even if he sets a blistering pace along with theseveral other front-runners, such as Dakota Gold and Winter Power who bothexcel here. However, it may pay to look for something to come from off the pace andFrench filly Suesa is the obvious candidate after being so impressive at GloriousGoodwood. However, she’s likely to be going into the unknown ground-wise(unraced on good or faster) so is not risk-free at a short price. Arecibo, Moss Gill,Dragon Symbol and CHIPOTLE are others who should have the race run to suit, and preference is for the 2yo Chipotle who receives bundles of weight. He won in finestyle at Royal Ascot and has had excuses since. King’s Stand runner-up Arecibo issecond choice.[Ben Hutton]

VERDICT The clash between STRADIVARIUS and Trueshan did nothappen at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood due to ground

conditions but hopefully both will take their chance this time. In an ideal worldTrueshan would have plenty of give underfoot but he’s greatly respected on abilityand remains unexposed over 2m. Stradivarius still retains a good deal of ability agedseven and is taken to record a third success in this race. Spanish Mission is alsofirmly in the mix.[Steve Boow]
