OCTOBERR 2019 / TRINITY TRUMPET 3

It may come asa surprise that weare actually wel-coming two newclergy, one half-time and theother quarter-time. This is agood thing, givenwhat we ex-pected a fewmonths ago, butit requires a bitof explanation.

We enteredinto the searchfor a new priest with the rather difficultnews that the Diocese would only author-ize a half-time appointment. (We are byno means alone in this situation. Today, only a minority of Connecticut parisheshave full-time priests, and many havegone a year or more with no priest at allof their own.) Last year, however, theDiocese conceived a new model in whichnewly-ordained clergy going into part-time positions would be paired with ex-perienced mentors for their first year, and we have been selected to participatein this new initiative. As a result, for thenext year, we will have two new clergy:one (Mary Barnett) who is new to theministry and will hopefully serve with us

for years tocome, the other(Mary Anne Os-born) an experi-enced priest whowill be with us forone year andserve as a mentorto Mary Barnettas she begins herministry.

The ReverendMary Barnettcompleted herseminary trainingthis past year at

Yale Divinity School, after a career run-ning her own dance company, In GoodCompany, since 1986. She was ordaineda Deacon this past summer, and will beordained to the priesthood early in 2020.(In the Episcopal Church, clergy are firstordained Deacons for at least six monthsbefore ordination to the priesthood.)Her initial official title will be “MissionalCurate.” While she is still a deacon andnot yet a priest, we will not be without apriest between now and her ordination.Mary Anne Osborn will serve at HolyTrinity with the title “Missional Priest inCharge” for a period of one year, andwill be the sole parish priest until MaryBarnett is ordained a priest. She will be

that began the search process, the Vestrythat completed it, the Intercessory PrayerGroup that has supported us with theirprayers, and to the entire congregationfor their faithfulness, patience, andprayers as we have carried out a ratherlong transition process with grace, pa-tience, hope, and good will. I would alsolike to thank the Reverend Lee Ann Tolz-mann, the diocesan Canon for MissionLeadership, and the Reverend JosephKrasinski, who served as consultant in theprocess. This was a two-year effort that re-quired a lot of time, work, and thoughtfuldiscernment from a lot of people, andprayer from everyone, and we shouldthank everyone involved for a job welldone.

I would also like to offer the most heart-felt thanks to the Rev. Dana Campbell, who has served as our interim priest incharge for five and a half years. Interimministers generally serve from 1-3 years, of-ficiating at worship, taking care of theparish’s pastoral needs, and often doingsome of the hard things that need to bedone to put things in order before a newpriest is called. Dana did all this, but alsobecame, in essence, our parish priest anda beloved member of our parish family. Asa consequence, it will be hard for many ofus to say good-bye, but we do so with ourprofound thanks, as well as our blessingsand prayers as she begins her retirement.Deepest thanks also to Deacon Pat Jack-son, who has tirelessly and joyously lookedafter many of the pastoral needs of ourcongregation, and who – thankfully – willbe able to stay on with us for up to an-other six months.

ecclesiastical authority in the parish forthe year she is here, officiate at Eucharist, and help attend to pastoral needs, butmuch of her responsibility will be as apriest-mentor. After the first year, we hopethat Mary Barnett will continue on with uswith the new title of Missional Priest-in-Charge.

The Rev. Osborne will be with us twoSundays per month, as her position isquarter-time. This means that, until theRev. Barnett is ordained to the priesthoodearly in 2020, we will alternate services be-tween Eucharist and Morning Prayer onSunday mornings, with a single service at9:30. When the Rev. Osborne is present, she will celebrate the Eucharist. When sheis not, the Rev. Barnett will lead MorningPrayer.

If all these new titles and the newmodel of ministry are new and confusingto you, they were to us at first as well. Wehope to have opportunities in the comingweeks to introduce our new clergy morefully, to explain this innovative model, and to answer any questions.

But the most important thing for themoment is that we are welcoming twowonderful clergy to our parish, after along interim period. They bring us awealth of experience of many differenttypes, and I can tell from my meetingswith them how enthusiastic they are aboutour church. I hope that we will all givethem a warm and enthusiastic welcome.

I would also like to say a word of pro-found thanks to a number of people whohave helped to make this transitionprocess a success: the Transition Team

NOT LONG AGO inthe presence of theAbbot and fellow

members of the Compan-ions of St. Luke, BrotherThomas Anthony Goddard(known at Holy Trinity as Br.Thomas) made his SolemnBenedictine Life Vows atConception Abbey, Mis-souri, during the order’sAnnual Convocation. The ceremony fol-lowed the ancient rite of prostrating atMass before the altar while covered witha funeral pall, symbolizing death to sinand life to Christ. The vows Brothermade for life were:

Obedience, derived from the Latin verbmeaning “to hear.” This vow is to the Su-perior who holds the place of Christ inthe community. The first words of theRule are “Listen carefully. . .”

Conversion of Life which means “re-nouncing yourself in order to followChrist,” (Matt 16:24), and acting in a waythat is different from the world’s, placingthe love of Christ before all else.

Stability is commitment to the to theRule, family, parish and the area whereone lives and works. The commitment toourselves and to each other strengthensour commitment to God.

Many at Holy Trinity have wonderedwhy Br. Thomas’ Community meets at aRoman Catholic facility. When the Com-

panions of St. Luke, Order of St.Benedict was first establishedmore than 25 years ago, theywere welcomed by the Abbot ofConception Abbey to meet therewhen necessary, especially sincethey had large guest facilitiesand also because they were partof the world-wide Benedictinefamily. (A true ecumenical gesture!)At the time, and still true today,

Religious Communities for men andwomen in the Episcopal Church can notaccommodate large groups. At timesthere would be at least fifty guests in agroup.

Be reminded that the religious orderthat our Brother follows is non-residen-tial, meaning he does not live in amonastery. His home and the communitywhere he lives as well as his Parish are hismonastery. He follows the Rule of St.Benedict and when ever possible daily re-cites the Prayer Book Offices of MorningPrayer, Noon Day Prayer, EveningPrayer, and Compline at home or whereever he may be. Br. Thomas asks yourprayers and your understanding.

MINISTRY FAIRTo kick off our Stewardship Season, please join us for ourMinistry Fair onOctober 6 immediately following the9:30 service. Please save the date andplan to join us in the sanctuary duringcoffee hour to learn about our variedministries of CHT.

Stewardship is about being grateful, re-sponsible stewards of the gifts we receivefrom God. The tradition of giving backto God and to the church comes fromthe Biblical practice of “tithing,” whichmeans to give back a tenth of our earn-ings to God (Numbers 18:26). The Epis-copal Church sees stewardship as morethan simply contributing money to thechurch; it’s also about contributing timeand talents, and volunteering for min-istry and mission. It’s about reaching outto build relationships from a perspectiveof abundance instead of scarcity..

Dear CHT,

Hi, I’m Mary Barnett, your new Missional Curate. I gradu-ated from Yale Divinity School and Berkeley Divinity Schoolin 2019; got an earlier master’s degree from Wesleyan inDance and Writing and sometime in the previous century, graduated from Connecticut College. I live in Branford with

my husband Dave and three kids. Well, now two. The eldest we justdropped off at Northwestern. At YDS, I particularly enjoyed studying justabout everything with just about everybody and focused most deeply onpoetry and theology with Christian Wiman. I am inspired by Julian ofNorwich, dealing with limitations and nourishing my beginner’s mind. There is always an infinite amount to learn. I am most eager now to learnabout all of you.
