DOES MY CLASSROOM HAVE AN APPLE TV?

If a classroom’s AV Controller lists APPLE TV as a source option, then Apple TV is available via the AV system.

MIRROR YOUR iPHONE, iPAD, or iPOD TOUCH

Use Screen Mirroring to see the entire screen of your iOS device on your Apple TV

1. Turn the AV system on with the room’s AV Controller and choose APPLE TV as the source. 2. On your iOS device, open Control Center and tap Screen Mirroring.

3. Select your classroom’s Apple TV from the list. If you don’t see your Apple TV, make sure that your iOS device is connected to the eduroam Wi-Fi network.

4. When an AirPlay passcode appears on the projection screen or display, enter the passcode on your iOS device.

Your TV uses your iOS device's screen orientation and aspect ratio. To fill your TV screen with the mirrored iOS device screen, change your TV's aspect ratio or zoom settings.

To stop mirroring your iOS device, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, then tap Stop Mirroring. Or press the Menu button on your Apple TV remote.

MIRROR OR EXTEND YOUR MAC DISPLAY

With Apple TV, you can mirror the entire display of your Mac to the projection screen or display in the classroom, or use the projection screen as a separate display (extended desktop).

1. Turn the AV system on with the room’s AV Controller and choose APPLE TV as the source.

2. On your Mac click in the menu bar at the top of your screen.

3. Select your classroom’s Apple TV from the list. If you don’t see your Apple TV, make sure that your iOS device is connected to the eduroam Wi-Fi network.

4. When an AirPlay passcode appears on the projection screen or display, enter the passcode on your iOS device

To change the size of your desktop mirrored on the screen, click in the menu bar. Then select Mirror Built-in Display to match the size of your desktop or Mirror Apple TV to match the size of your projection screen or display.

AirPlay also lets you use the projection screen or display as a separate display for your Mac. Just click in the menu bar, then select Use As Separate Display.

To stop mirroring or using your projection screen as a separate display, click in the menu bar, then choose Turn AirPlay Off.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the effective range for using Airplay/Apple TV?

The limiting factor will be the distance from each device to the wireless access point or router you are using for your wireless network, not the device to the Apple TV. An exact distance is impossible to determine due to the numerous variables involved in wireless networking.

Can I use my Android or Windows device with an Apple TV?

Generally, no. There are paid, third-party applications available that may work but are not directly supported by Apple or Trinity College. Faculty should contact their Instructional Technologist for more information.

Why don’t all classrooms have an Apple TV?

The Fall 2018 Semester is Trinity’s first significant rollout of Apple TVs. If they prove successful and faculty ask for them in more locations we will likely see the program expand.

When I look for the Apple TV for my classroom via the Control Center I see many other Apple TVs. What are these?

Many students bring their own Apple TV to campus. Most will not be visible but some may show up in your control center. Be sure to choose the Apple TV for the location you are in.

Is there a list of all locations of Trinity College supported Apple TVs on campus?

See the next page for a current list.
