Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith . . . Letter to the Hebrews 12:1-2a

The Way of Discipleship

You are walking along a narrow road that climbs steadily upward. You are one of many who go that Way— old and young, male and female, strong and halting. Far ahead, obscured as if by mists and clouds is your goal.

From time to time, some of you catch glimpses of it. It is a city of indescribable beauty, where all hungers are appeased and all sorrows end. It is your heart’s true home. You name it for one another in different ways:

the kingdom of heaven, the City of God, the New Jerusalem. In this you are all agreed: it promises a far better future than the present place you occupy.

To encourage one another you sing the praises of the city in familiar hymns. The journey to God’s kingdom proves longer and more winding than you first thought. Nor is this high and narrow Way a detour around life’s difficulties. You encounter every kind of

suffering, known to humans: hunger, thirst, sickness, pain, sorrow, war, temptation, anxiety, depression, danger. Sometimes you quarrel; often you weep; occasionally you despair.

From time to time you come upon side roads. Many of these are broad, inviting boulevards that lead down and away from the Way. There is talk among you of the bliss that might be found at the end of these roads,

but the wise among you war n that they will prove to be dead end streets.

You are often tempted to turn back. There is no gate or barrier to prevent you. But when you turn around and look back, you see an empty cross. Its shadow falls across the way you have come.

Everything you have experienced is covered by that shadow.

As people do who travel together on long journeys, you tell one another stories. You like to hear about other pilgrims who have gone this Way before. Above all you want to hear about the Hero who blazed this trail. For you are his followers.

You are comforted, exhorted, enlightened by signs that he has left for you along the Way. They bear messages as these:

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. (Adapted from the Kerygma Bible Study, Blessed Are You . . .)

As we approach November and the annual remembrance of All Saints, I always find myself thinking about my grandparents and parents and brother and other loved ones who have died—my fellow beloved pilgrims on my journey here on earth—and I am filled with thanksgiving for their presence and the unique gifts they brought to my journey of faith.

This year the appointed gospel lesson for All Saints Sunday is the Beatitudes from Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount. I can’t help but think of the Beatles’ song, “The Long and Winding Road” whenever I hear Jesus’ sermon where he gives us a portrait of the way of discipleship. I especially like that the song lyrics remind me that the long and winding road inevitably leads us back to where we began: to the One who walked the way before us. And my heart is lifted up when I consider that this is not a solo walk but we are part of a “great cloud of witnesses”, a whole band of pilgrims walking together—past, present and future. It is a great comfort to know that there are other hands, arms, eyes and ears, legs and feet, hearts and minds and tongues to help sing our praises, shout our laments, share our joys and carry our burdens. Blessed are we, indeed!

As I give thanks this November for all the pilgrim saints—past, present and future—who travel with me on this long and winding road, I pray that God will bless us and keep us along the way and give us hearts to recognize his grace along the Way.

ADVENT PARISH FAIR AND BRUNCH An Intergenerational Event!

Prepare for the joy of Christmas with the gifts of Advent. Crafts, food, fellowship and fun for all ages are on the agenda and a brief worship will end the activities at approximately 3 PM.

A team effort on the part of our members is what makes this event so special. So, if you are available to be part of that team,* here are some things you can do:

help with set-up/preparations and clean-up — we will need some strong people to assist with the set-up and breakdown of tables and clean up after the fair,

make a brunch/lunch dish to share, help with serving and/or clean-up, bake a dozen or two of Christmas "cookie-cutter" cookies at home and bring them in for children to decorate –

cookies will be boxed for our shut-ins, and/or lead or assist with a craft by making samples, organizing the tools and supplies, etc.

Please contact Dianna Mammone at [email protected] or 201-843-5769 or Judy Danilchick at [email protected] or 201-935-2195 for more information, to submit a craft idea or to let them know of your availability. The Sundays in November 2014 Now, Lord, you let your servants go in peace . . .

PENTECOST XXII, November 9 Keep awake and be ready, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 9:15 AM 2nd Sunday Family Worship and 10:30 AM Traditional Worship Today the prophet Amos calls for justice to roll down like waters. Paul urges us to encourage one another with the promised coming of the Lord. Jesus tells the parable of the wise and foolish bridesmaids. Surrounded by the faithful of every time and place, we celebrate Christ’s coming in our midst in the word of life and the feast of victory—the marriage feast of the lamb.

PENTECOST XXIII, November 16 Abide in me and I abide in you; those who abide in me bear much fruit. Though we do not know and cannot calculate the day of Christ’s return, we live faithfully in the here and now as we anticipate the great day of his coming again. Jesus tells the parable of the talents, calling us to use our gifts, while we still have time, for the greater and common good. We gather around signs of hope—word, water, bread and wine—eager to welcome the good news .

CHRIST THE KING, November 23 We are the people of God’s pasture and the sheep of God’s hand. On this final Sunday of the church year, we gather to celebrate the reign of Christ and his victory over death, yet awaiting the consummation of all things yet to come. Acknowledging Christ as our merciful ruler, we go forth that his reign may be known in our loving words and deeds.

ADVENT I, November 30 The Lord Will Be Our Everlasting Light Let your face shine upon us and we shall be saved. Stir up your power, and come! The psalmist plea is our Advent prayer as we await together the day when Christ returns in power and glory to end all suffering. In the meantime, Paul reminds us that the Lord has enriched us through spiritual gifts and will continue to strengthen us until the coming day of the Lord.

ALL SAINTS SUNDAY, November 2 Holy Communion with Remembrance of All Saints and

Rite of Confirmation for Matthew Cupo; Owen De Cicco; Michael Fiore; James Frazee; Tim Obiso; Michael O’Malley; Sean O’Malley; Matthew Pierce; James Varga

The feast of All Saints celebrates the baptized people of God, living and dead, who are the body of Christ. The saints are those who know something about God and point away from themselves and towards the One

who is all in all for them, namely God. In holy baptism God makes saints out of sinners. This feast day is especially appropriate for nine young men to publicly affirm their baptisms in the rite of Confirmation

Book of Hope Update

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul

And sings the tune without words

And never stops at all Emily Dickinson

. . . so that you may not grieve as others do who

have no hope.

The Apostle Paul, letter to the Thessalonians (4:13b)

The great American poet, Emily Dickinson, who was acquainted with depression and times of despair,

describes hope as a bird that sings wordlessly and without pause. In another part of her poem, she

writes that she has heard the bird of hope “in the Chilliest Land / and in the Strangest Sea.” The

Spirit who intercedes for us “with sighs too deep for words” is what I believe Dickinson is describing as

the “thing with feathers that perches in the soul.” Though Dickinson’s bird of hope sings without

words, nevertheless, most of us long for words that encourage us, lift us up and . . . give us hope.

Sending words of encouragement to lift up and sustain hope is the very reason for Paul’s first letter to

the Thessalonians. And it is the purpose of the Book of Hope to offer words that encourage, inspire

and lift up, to help us hear hope singing in our soul.

The Book of Hope is designed as a resource much like our prayer shawl ministry. Last year, the book

folios were created during our Shrove Tuesday meal. Members of Holy Trinity have contributed

comforting and inspiring quotes from many sources, both sacred and secular, that have been

organized into a wide variety of categories from grief and joy, fear and healing, loss and thankfulness.

This collection of prayers and quotes provides a way to create a book that is personal to both the

receiver and the giver. They can be tailored to comfort people in grief, serious illness, or prolonged

times of trial. What is more, prayers and quotes can be added or changed in the Book of Hope.

The Book of Hope resource is now ready to be shared. We have 14 hand-decorated folios available

now but more folios will be created as needed. If you know of someone who could benefit from a

personalized book like this, please contact Dianna Mammone or Pastor Susan and we will work with

you to assemble a personalized folio of prayers and quotes.

2015 ELCA National Youth Gathering Update Ten young people and 6 adult chaperones have committed to attending the 2015 ELCA National Youth Gathering in Detroit this coming July. ELCA Youth Gatherings bring youth and adult leaders together around a theme that is integrated into all program components. These components include Bible study, service, worship, focused study areas, experiential learning, special events, dances and tours.

Through a variety of fundraisers, we hope to raise about $20,000 for our hotel and meal costs and to charter a bus to bring us to and from Detroit. Our first fundraiser is a Chicken and Chips dinner on Wednesday, November 19, catered by Tastefully British Caterers at Holy Trinity from 5 to 7:30 PM. You can either eat-in or take-out! Members of the YG 2015 Team will be on hand to sell tickets on Sunday mornings following worship.

A postcard from Confirmation Ministries . . . Confirmation classes resumed with an orientation for parents and students on Monday evening, October 6. On Sunday, October 12, the new class was presented to the congregation and they received their Study Bibles and handbooks. Students began their yearlong study of the Bible on Monday evening, October 13. There are five students currently registered for Confirmation studies: Emily Cupo, Katie Jones, Steven Kelly, Bradley Mika, and Christina Vazquez.

During the coming year, we will embark on a yearlong study of the Bible, our book of faith. We begin with a unit entitled “Family Matters.” Young people and adults alike struggle with questions about the roles and relationships they have with their families of origin, the community of faith, and the whole human family. The stories we will study in Genesis help us explore the joys and struggles of family matters. Relationships build community. We need others in order for us to be ourselves. We see in others things that we would like to see in ourselves, and sometimes we see things that embarrass us. Some of the questions we will explore together will consider the qualities we want to find and experience in a relationship. Other questions we will begin exploring at the orientation are:

What do you think makes for a good relationship with another person?

What makes for a good relationship with a parent or guardian? What makes for a good relationship with a son or

daughter?

Describe your relationship with God. Describe your relationship with other people. How are they alike?

Classes meet on the first three Monday evenings of each month from 7:00 to 8:15 PM.

Thanks Living

Scripture: "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these

brothers of mine, you did for me.'" Matthew 25:40

When someone does something nice for you, what do you do? You say, "Thank you," don't you? Sometimes that

just doesn't seem to be enough. Has someone ever done something for you that was so nice that you wanted

to do more than just say, "Thank You?" I have. When that happens, I sometimes send them a "Thank You"

card. Everyone enjoys receiving a "Thank You" card.

Another way you can show your thanks when someone does something really nice for you is by doing something

nice for them in return. For example, if someone invites you to spend the night and you have a really good

time, you should return their kindness by inviting them to come and spend the night with you.

It’s always important to show our appreciation when someone does something for us, isn't it?

Well, I don't know anyone who has done more for us than God has. God provides food when we are hungry and

water when we are thirsty. He heals us when we are sick and he comforts us when we are sad. The Bible tells

us that he is an ever-present helper in times of trouble.

Because of all God has done for us, we say, "Thank you." But somehow that doesn't seem to be enough. We

could write him a "Thank You" card, but I don't think the Post Office could deliver it, do you? I have a good

idea: Why don't we do something nice for him in return? But how?

Jesus told us how to do it. Jesus, said, "Whatever you do for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you

do it for me." That means when we feed someone who is hungry, it is the same as doing it for Jesus. When we

visit someone who is sick, it is the same as doing it for Jesus. When we give clothes to those who are in need,

it is the same as doing it for Jesus.

There is a very special name for this way of saying, "Thank you." I call it "thanks living." "Thanks living" is

when we show our thanks by the way we live. "Thanks living" is when we look at the many ways God has blessed

us, and we thank him by being a blessing to others.

Say the prayer below and ask God to help us to offer our thanksgiving by "thanks living."

Our Father, we come into your presence with thanksgiving.

Help us to turn our thanksgiving into "thanks living." Amen.

Meet Charlotte Schlindwein Charlotte was born in New York City and baptized in a Lutheran Church

in the Bronx. She was confirmed in an Evangelical Lutheran Church in

Germany during her parents’ 12-year residence in that country. They

moved to Hasbrouck Heights in 1950 where she attended Hasbrouck

Heights High School. Charlotte then majored in Textile Chemistry at

Fairleigh Dickinson College. After the move to Hasbrouck Heights, her

family joined Holy Trinity. Charlotte was an active member and partici-

pated in Luther League for many years. In fact, Charlotte met her

husband, Julius, when he attended Luther League meetings with his

cousin, Fran. They were married at Holy Trinity by Pastor Meiburg in 1955. They resided in Englewood

for several years and that’s where their two daughters joined their family. In 1959, they purchased a

home in Saddle Brook and enrolled their daughters in Sunday School at Redeemer Lutheran Church in

Maywood. They became members of that congregation in 1960.

As a parent of two children in Sunday School, Charlotte, became active in a variety of projects, pitching

in where help was needed. The projects included nursery duties, Sunday School activities, and many

years of confirmation class and youth group events. Special outings always included morning women's

Bible study meetings and afternoon “stocking cutting” gatherings for knitted blankets for Africa. In

later years, Social Service committee projects and Altar Guild responsibilities kept Charlotte active.

She also served as financial secretary, treasurer and council member.

Charlotte feels privileged to have been a "Housewife Mom" while her daughters were growing up and

was very active in PTA and Girl Scout activities. She returned to the working world in 1972 for a local

life insurance home office in the accounting field. During her years with the company, she obtained a

degree in Home Office Management. She retired in 1994 when the company was sold to a Texas

insurance firm. Currently, she enjoys crocheting, knitting and reading and she is a member of the

Saddle Brook Branch of the HUMC Auxiliary, which provides preemie baby hats, lap robes and cardiac

pillows for the hospital.

In 2002, Charlotte’s mom took a fall which resulted in a broken hip, surgery, much rehab and repeated

surgeries for multiple medical complications. Charlotte managed her many care needs both at her

home and in assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Her mother passed away in 2009 at the age

of 98. During this time of caring for her mother, Charlotte learned a great deal about the needs of the

many individuals residing in these facilities and the extreme difficulties they encounter every day.

Charlotte’s husband passed away suddenly and unexpectedly after a heart attack in 2004. They shared

10 years in retirement together — a very special time during which they enjoyed many good times with

their six grandchildren. This year, a new generation joined their family — a great grandson, Ryan.

Although Charlotte feels great sadness at the closing of Redeemer/Maywood, she rejoices in the warm

welcome she has received from the members at Holy Trinity. Charlotte says that she feels she has

come home. She says, “God has blessed me in so many ways.” At Holy Trinity, Charlotte is a member

of Readers and SWIM, she participates in WELCA activities as she is able, and serves as a coffee hour

host. She considers herself a “behind the scenes” person and we feel blessed, too, to have her as a

member of Holy Trinity, behind the scenes or not. Many thanks to Charlotte for all that she does.

December 19, at Old Bergen Church in Jersey City. This interfaith service will honor and remember

homeless neighbors, friends, and loved ones who have passed away, tragically lost to the streets.

National Homeless Memorial Day commemorates the first day of winter, the longest night of the year

and the start of another cold, painful season for the homeless.

New thermals, socks, hats, scarves, gloves or toiletries are needed and will be shared with those

attending the service who are in need — who are still living and dying on the streets.

Thank you for helping us to be a blessing to others — to make a difference!

REMINDER If you are filling a shoe

box for the Samaritan's Purse, Operation Christmas Child project,

aka "The Shoe Box Project," boxes or items

you are donating need to be brought in by November 2. Decorated shoe boxes are available in the lobby at Holy Trinity or you

may choose to use and decorate your own shoe box (please wrap the top and bottom

separately so it can be easily opened). Boxes should be filled with any of the suggested items listed in the brochure

found either in the box or on the table in the lobby; or, simply just donate any of the

appropriate items and let WELCA do the rest. If you decide to fill a box, please be sure to indicate whether the box is for a

BOY or a GIRL and the age category, 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14 years of age, using the avail-

able labels.

READERS

The Readers Group at Holy

Trinity met in September

over Chinese food to discuss two books that

had been recommended. We discovered both

books had themes of a mystery happening in

the past along with a present-day theme. Lively

discussion and fellowship were enjoyed by all

and plans for our next get-together were made.

The book selected is Two Sisters by Mary

Hogan. Amazon books describes it like this:

One family, two sisters, a lifetime of secrets . . .

The third child in a family that wanted only two,

Muriel Sullivant has always been an outsider.

Short, dark-haired, and round, she worships her

beautiful blond sister, Pia, and envies the close

bond she shares with their mother, Lidia. Grow-

ing up in their shadow, Muriel believes that if she

keeps all their secrets—and she knows plenty,

outsiders always do—they will love her, too.

But that was a long time ago. Now an adult,

Muriel has accepted the disappointments in her

life. With her fourth-floor walk-up apartment and

entry-level New York City job, she never will

measure up to Pia and her wealthy husband,

their daughter, and their suburban Connecticut

dream home. Muriel would like nothing better

than to avoid her judgmental family altogether,

one thing she does quite well.

Until the day Pia shows up to visit and share

devastating news that Muriel knows she cannot

tell—a secret that will force her to come to terms

with the past and help her see her life and her

family in unexpected new ways.

Two Sisters is a powerful and poignant debut

novel about two sisters—opposites in every

way—as well as their mother and the secrets and

lies that define them all.

Join us on Friday, November 14 at 6:30 PM

multi-purpose room at Holy Trinity. A sign-up

at 201-843-5769 if you have questions. We

invite you to join this lively group and, if you

will capture your interest.
