Taizé Evening Prayer Songs and Prayer for Reflection

Taizé Worship means multiple things to various people. Its setting in France has become a place of refuge and

pilgrimage. Its style has become synonymous with reflection and sometimes, silence. Its foundational intent is to

enter into the mystery of the presence of God, allowing for self-reflection and prayer. The repetitive nature of this

style is meant to open us up to that mystery and reflection, without an evolving text or demanding music to pull our

concentration. Join us in these songs for prayer.

Psalm Reading Psalm 141

Worship leaders will read the verses. We all join for the GLORIA PATRI in bold.

1I call upon you, O LORD; come quickly to me;

give ear to my voice when I call to you.

2Let my prayer be counted as incense before you,

and the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice.

3Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD;

keep watch over the door of my lips.

4Do not turn my heart to any evil, to busy myself with wicked deeds

in company with those who work iniquity; do not let me eat of their delicacies.

5Let the righteous strike me; let the faithful correct me.

Never let the oil of the wicked anoint my head, for my prayer is continually against their wicked deeds.

6When they are given over to those who shall condemn them,

then they shall learn that my words were pleasant.

7Like a rock that one breaks apart and shatters on the land,

so shall their bones be strewn at the mouth of Sheol.

8But my eyes are turned toward you, O God, my LORD;

in you I seek refuge; do not leave me defenseless.

9Keep me from the trap that they have laid for me,

and from the snares of evildoers.

10Let the wicked fall into their own nets,

while I alone escape.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen.

Alleluia

Scripture Reading

Reflection

A period of 2 minutes follows, during which we reflect on the Word of God.

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Lament

A worship leader guides us in prayer. When a note sounds, the prayer response will be:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,

now and forever. Amen.

Concluding Prayer and Blessing

A worship leader prays one of the concluding prayers.

O God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden,

through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your

hand is leading us and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

OR

O God, from whom come all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works: give to us, your servants, that peace

which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey your commandments; and also that we, being

defended from the fear of our enemies, may live in peace and quietness; through Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives

and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God forever. Amen.

OR

We give thanks to you, heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ your dear Son, that you have graciously protected us

today. We ask you to forgive us all our sins, where we have done wrong, and graciously to protect us tonight. Into

your hands we commend ourselves: our bodies, our souls, and all that is ours. Let your holy angels be with us, so

that the wicked foe may have no power over us. Amen.
