PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE CONSECRATION SUNDAY - February 15, 2015

Consecration Sunday will be our time to turn our Estimation of Giving Cards in for our

planned gifts for 2015.

There will be a lite brunch after the 8:15 worship service and a lite lunch after the 10:30

worship service. More information will come, but mark the date for this special event.

The following piece is something I’ve found that shares some helpful thoughts.

WHO ASKS FOR MONEY

Sometimes you hear people say, “The Church is always asking for money.” That statement is

profoundly untrue.

It is the world that is always asking for money, not the church. When did you last go to the

grocery store and the cashier failed to ask you for money? Your mortgage company asks for

money with unfailing regularity. If you live like most people, each month brings a new

collection of bills.

Are any of them from the church? Who withholds a percentage of every dollar you earn?

Your Uncle Sam does that. God does not!

There is no free lunch—except at church. You can attend worship every week – there is no

admission charge. Where will your children be married? What do you do when your loved

one dies? What will it cost? The funeral home will certainly charge for its services. Your

church will not. The church building will always be there when you need it – clean, heated,

and with kitchen and nursery provided. You may make full use of it and never pay one dime.

No one will even know whether you contribute or not.

You have to pay taxes to provide your children “free” public education, but your church

operates a Sunday School which will give quality Christian Education with absolutely no cost

or obligation.

Money given to the church is money invested in the eternal kingdom. God is not poor. There

are many who are glad to have a part in providing ministry in Jesus’ name through the church.

They joyfully give more than their share so that others who cannot or choose not to

contribute may receive that ministry at no cost.

The Church is here to share the love of Jesus Christ. Our money goes to serve Him. We will

continue to provide ministry in Jesus’ name to everyone, whether they can afford to

contribute or not. Isn’t that something you would like to be a part of?

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21

Happy New Year! We are so happy to be back with the children after our Christmas break. After some relaxing time off (and a couple of extra days off due to the weather!), we are back in the swing of things. Believe it or not, it is time to begin enrollment for the 2015/2016 school year! We open enrollment this month to currently enrolled families and also to Trinity Church members. Enrollment will open to the community in February. If you are looking for a wonderful,

educationally sound, Christian preschool experience for your child, or know of someone who is, we encourage you to consider our program. You are always welcome to come and observe our classes or call Nancy Harrow at 474-9870 for information. We are looking forward to a new year of growing, learning and fun as we enter 2015 and the second half of our 25

th year! (We will be closed on Monday, January 19 in

observance of Martin Luther King Day). -Nancy Harrow, Director

CHILDREN & FAMILY MINISTRIES The children in the Sunday school program have had a couple weeks off to spend time with their families during the Christmas Holiday. We returned to Sunday school this past week and continued our journey through the Old Testament. The students learned about Gideon and how God used him to help save the

Israelites from the Midianites. The Israelites had once again turned their back on God and began worshiping idols and God was not happy about it. God chose Gideon to help the Israelites find their way to back to Him. Gideon asked for many signs from God to be sure it was really Him, but in the end Gideon did just as God had asked. We have to trust God even though we may not understand what He wants right away. The students made a magnet for home that displayed the letters “ASAP”. ASAP in our Sunday school room does not mean As Soon As Possible. To our students ASAP means Always Say A Prayer. The students made magnets to help them remember that when they are in doubt or in need they just need to slow down and say a prayer. -Marisha Eveland, Director

To the many members of Trinity Lutheran congregation, Rev. Dr. Gerhard Kraus, Rev. John Mittermaier, Pastor Paul and Marilyn Young, and Pastor David and Marilyn Hammel, Linda and I would like to thank you all very much for the many visits, cards and phone calls for your concern, prayers and get well cards. It is and will be a long and rocky road from the stroke I had in

November but with all the wonderful people and God on our side, we are working hard to conquer it. The progress is coming very slow but with the continued prayers and wonderful congregation we will strive with all that we have to try to conquer this task. The support of all of you on our side will and has been a great asset. Yours in the Glory of God, Linda & Charlie Dunkle

Thank you to Cindy Ferguson and Darlene Woodward for their Altar Guild service in December. We appreciate all of our Trinity volunteers!

Trinity Lutheran Church and Pastor Kraus, Thank you ever so much for the scholarship. As a senior at Capital, there is relief in knowing I’ve had help from you guys financially over the years as I start planning how I will pay off my student loan debt and covering all my current costs. Trinity has felt like a piece of home to me for so long. Many members feel like extended family. I look forward to keeping in contact with you all in the next chapter of my life. Thanks, Jeremy Young

Thank you to the wonderful crew that helped to take down the church Christmas decorations. Cindy Ferguson, Joann VanBuskirk, Doris Young, Dan and Judy Manes, Sam Shapiro, Katie Schneider, and Leah Pettit were all a tremendous help in taking down and putting away the decorations. Thank you! TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH ENDOWED BENEVOLENT FUND PROJECTS

The TLC Endowed Benevolent Fund Disbursement Committee has 12 projects on the 2015 ballot set for Sunday, January 25, 2015. Each voting member of Trinity will have ten votes to use on the ballot in any manner desired, but not to exceed ten votes.

Available funding will be divided among those projects receiving 3% or more of the votes. Additionally, projects that receive 2% or less of the total votes will be re-considered for next year's ballot. These steps will allow the desires of the congregation to be recognized while avoiding the need to make small and inconsequential donations.

LOCAL 1. Emergency Clearinghouse Association This organization is funded through the support of area churches. This organization that provides families with emergency food and supplies. This program maintains the Food Pantry and also supplies sundry items when available to those in need throughout our county. 2. Good Samaritan Fund This Trinity Lutheran Church fund is used for emergency needs of people in our community. These funds have been used to assist with the purchase of medicine and to assist in the payment of utilities for people living within Pickaway County. It is to be used above and beyond where the Emergency Clearinghouse Association can help. 3. Pickaway County Hands for the Disabled The Pickaway County Hands for the Disabled (PCHD) is located at 210 Lancaster Pike, sharing the building with Schieber Pharmacy. PCHD has medical equipment such as wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, and things to make a house temporarily handicapped accessible, for loan to anyone in Pickaway County at no charge. They will assist with the purchase and repair of these items along with braces and hearing aids. Speech therapy services are provided at the summer speech and hearing clinic. Their only income is from the annual mail campaign, volunteer contributions, memorial gifts, and contributions from special events. One hundred percent of contributions stay in Pickaway County. 4. Trinity Lutheran Preschool Trinity Lutheran Christian Preschool is a vital and thriving component of the educational ministry here at Trinity. We serve an average of 100 children and their families each year and we are able to support and enhance our program with funds received from TLCEBF. The money received is used to: purchase educational materials and resources that allow us to stay current with ever-changing educational trends; meet curriculum standards and licensing requirements for the State of Ohio; replace old outdated and damaged toys, furniture and equipment with updated and safer items; provide weekly take-home student magazines that reinforce at home what is being taught at school; keep our tuition costs affordable and offer financial assistance to those who need it. Thank you for your continued support of this wonderful ministry. 5. Ruth Neff /D.A.R.E. Support Fund The Ruth Neff DARE Foundation was established in 2011 in memory of Ruth, who was a long time member at Trinity. She was a tireless builder and supporter of the DARE program in our county schools to instruct students about the dangers of drugs and to provide them with inspiration and coping skills to avoid using drugs. Initially, her memorial gifts were matched by Trinity from the general treasury and, together with family contributions, became the seed money for the Fund that is organized through the Pickaway County Community Foundation. State funding for DARE has been steadily decreasing, however the Sheriff’s Office still provides a deputy to make classroom instructional visits. The Fund supports all the other expenses that are necessary in a successful campaign. 6. Circle of Caring – Faith in Action (COC-FIA) COC—FIA caregiver program, based at Berger Health System, 1280 N. Court St., attempts to meet the everyday, but unmet, needs of frail, elderly, and disabled people in Pickaway County, helping them maintain independence, dignity and quality of life in their homes. Approximately 100 volunteers assist with transportation, handyman chores, minor home repairs, yard work, shopping, errands, friendly visits, respite care, building ramps, and light housekeeping on a casual, occasional basis. Last year volunteers built 21 ramps. In addition to donations, they are supported by an annual Garden Tour, golf tournament, dinner with concert, and the Kroger Rewards Program.

TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH ENDOWED BENEVOLENT FUND PROJECTS continued

7. Boy Scout Troop 170 Forty boys and growing! Their active program has a major activity every month, usually camping, but always involving the three aims of Scouting: citizenship, character, and fitness. At Pumpkin Show, their winning float proudly proclaims their association with Trinity and is a positive face for us in the community. The boys have several service projects involving the church and the community, most recently collecting 1,500 canned goods. Activities are funded through troop-conducted fundraisers, such as spaghetti suppers. Troop 170 won the Philmont Scout Ranch lottery and will be privileged to send a crew of 12 scouts and adults to New Mexico for three weeks in summer 2015. Cost for this life-changing trip is $1,500 per scout. Troop 170 is officially chartered through Trinity. Nationally, more than 12% of Scouts have their first contact with a church or synagogue by joining a troop. 8. Berger Hospice Care Every member of the hospice team is dedicated to optimizing a patient’s quality of life in the comfort and safety of a homelike environment that includes nursing homes and assisted living facilities. They use a holistic approach to care that provides for the medical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their families regardless of their ability to pay. The whole hospice theme includes RNs, LPNs, aides, social workers and chaplains. Hospice volunteers provide companionship, support and comfort to hospice patients and their families by running errands, cooking meals and delivering supplies and equipment. Bereavement services are provided to the patient’s family for 13 months consisting of mailings, calls and a monthly support group. This is the only not-for-profit hospice in Pickaway County. 9. Maintain Trinity Trinity has a number of missions, outreach and local groups that rely on our facility each week. The Maintain Trinity Fund was created in order to maintain our facility, replace aging equipment and provide an inviting place for these groups to carry out their work.

REGIONAL AND GLOBAL 10. Uganda H20 (Help 2 Others) The initial focus of the project was to provide fresh drinking water to a small village and school in the Lira, Uganda (Northern Uganda) area. Information regarding the needs of the area and the Alemere School was presented to Trinity members by Fr. Francis Akono, a native of the area and teacher at the school and friend of Trinity member Brenda Palm, in May 2013. Since the inception of the program, funds have been raised through sponsorship by private parties as well as from the church to begin work on the wells. Efforts to begin drilling the wells are being coordinated by the ELCA Global Mission Office and Lutheran World Federation in Kampala, Uganda. The only water source for the village is a small stream some distance from the village. Providing fresh water is only the first step in helping the residents of the village. Children need clothing, school supplies, and school scholarships as well. Sponsoring a semester of school for a child is approximately $50 to $75 and provides school supplies, fees, and a uniform. 11. h2o church at the Ohio State University Nate and Katie Dresbach (parents Patty and Norman Dresbach from Trinity) are spreading the love of Christ to students on the Ohio State University campus. Their sending organization is Great Commission Ministries (GCM), which is located in Orlando, FL. GCM is a Christian, non-denominational missions organization that mobilizes missionaries to work with local churches for the gospel. As full time missionaries, Nate and Katie have the responsibility for raising all of their own funding for GCM. The local church they work with is called h2o, which is focused on impacting the Ohio State students and community for Christ and making disciples. Currently, hundreds of students are involved at h2o and they offer a Sunday service, small groups, and many other opportunities to deepen their faith. Nate and Katie focus on sharing the gospel with unbelievers, leading a small group community on campus, and discipling students as they learn to follow Jesus. 12. Wernle Youth & Family Treatment Center Wernle Youth & Family Treatment Center (an agency of the ELCA), located in Richmond, IN, is a family-focused, child-centered agency providing opportunities for the growth, development and treatment of troubled children and their families - individually, interpersonally and socially - through caring programs and healing relationships, and through best-practice programs and a variety of therapy approaches. Wernle offers residential and outpatient service for adolescents (boys and girls) aged 10-21 who exhibit significant behavioral challenges. Some are physically and sexually abused or exhibit sexually maladaptive behavior, or they may have a high level of aggression, suicidal behavior, or AWOL risk. Wernle doesn’t just clinically treat young people. They educate them, nurture them, and return them to their families.

CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS IN THE UGANDA LIRA DISTRICT The following is an article written by Brenda Palm’s Ugandan granddaughter (who wants to be a journalist) regarding the Christmas customs in the Lira area. According to the people in Lango sub region Lira in particular, Christmas Day is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed most commonly on December 25 as a religious and cultural practice. From the Christian point of view it’s not just about celebrations but before the real celebrations Christians are given a period of four weeks called Advent for them to prepare the way for the coming of the permanent visitor, who is the Messiah and the son of God. The day of Christmas is seen as a period of purification, a period where one has to prepare his heart to welcome him, a period where people begin new journey of faith, a new look and the period of repentance, a period of generosity, and the period of alms giving to those in need, a period for us to visit the people in prison and period for us to be close to sick people in hospitals. For the people in Lango during the Christmas day there are always Christmas Games organized within different communities, Christmas dinner, among other activities for their fun. The media houses in the region also get involved and participate during Christmas by playing Christmas songs like “Jingle Bells” and “Joy to the World” among others. In connection to this, people are given time to compose their Christmas songs, then the winners are always awarded with lots of Christmas gifts. Additionally, media houses normally reach out to the public in teaching and giving some highlights about Christmas celebrations in Lango sub region. More so people also strive to know the origin of Christmas, by asking questions like where is the origin of Christmas, what does the term Christmas mean to different people and communities. From the understanding of religious leaders from all denominations their teachings are always centered on Christmas which they believe to be the day Jesus was born and the day God reveals himself to the world so that the whole humanity can attain salvation.

Suppose I gave everything I had to charity. You probably

would say I was a very good person—a fine Christian. But Paul said that unless I acted out of love, “I am nothing” (I Cor. 13:2). George Sweeting has said, “Life minus love equals nothing!” Do you have this kind of love—a love that puts others ahead of yourself? Without Jesus Christ in your heart, without the Holy Spirit in your life, you can’t produce this love. This is the kind of love Jesus had for us, when He willingly left the glory of Heaven and went to the cross for our salvation. Only God can give us a selfless love for others, as the Holy Spirit changes us from within. This is one reason we

must receive Christ, for apart from His Spirit we can never be freed from the chains of selfishness, jealousy, and indifference. Will others see Christ’s love in your life today? - Billy Graham

Pastor Carl Zehner’s son was kind enough to send the memorial bulletin from Pastor Zehner’s Celebration of Life service. Below is the obituary from the back page. The bulletin is posted on the Trinity News bulletin board if you would like to see it.

Rev. Carl Gazlay Zehner, 98 of Tucson, Arizona, passed away on December 9, 2014. He was born May 21, 1916 in Bellevue, Ohio, the son of Carl Christian and Jenne Gazlay Zehner; brothers Robert (deceased), and Clifford (deceased); sisters Charlotte (deceased) and Ruth Zehner Paul (Bellevue, Ohio). A graduate of Capital University and the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbus, Ohio, he went on to serve in the U.S. Navy Seabees as a Chaplain during WWII in the South Pacific, attaining the rank of Lt. Commander. Following his military service he served as a pastor in Greenville, Toledo, and Circleville, Ohio, before moving to Wilcox, Arizona, as the pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church. After 50 years of service to God in the

church, he and his wife moved to Tucson. Carl was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, sailing canoeing, archery, and badminton - the latter earning him a gold medal in the International Senior Olympics. He was a skilled woodworker, leather tooler, stained glass artist, and woodcarver. As a carver, he was a founding member of the S.W. Arizona Woodcarvers Association in 1983. He loved music, played the trombone and guitar, and was among the third generation of Zehner fathers to sing in church choirs for over 50 years each. He was an Executive Board member of Capital University, and a member of The Rotary and Lions Clubs. The Circleville Herald declared him one of the city's "10 Most Exciting Men." Carl was a devout Christian, investing his life in service to God and others. He was an exemplary, loving husband and father who was loved in return by all who knew him. He left a legacy of friendship, joy, laughter, and vitality for life. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Dorothea Koester Zehner, Tucson; his sons, Carl (Leonard Lindsay) of Nashville, Robert (Stephanie Shea Zehner) of San Francisco; his daughter Christine (Les Sheridan) of Atlanta; grandchildren Jenne Artz of Garfield, Arkansas, Henry and Anna Lehner of San Francisco; and great-grandchildren Kai and Ian Artz of Garfield, Arkansas.
