Pastor Love’s Message In the church year, the season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. Ever wonder why? The nature

and purpose of Lent gives rise to its beginning with Ash Wednesday.

Lent is a season or time in which the believer withdraws from much of the daily activities of the world

(turning away from the world) for the purpose of devoting more time with the Lord in prayer and Scriptur-

al meditation (turning to the Lord), what is commonly referred to as repentance.

The traditional words that follow the Invocation (calling upon God’s name) in the Ash Wed. service

are "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." This is done to emphasis our be-

ginning and our end because of sin in us and the sins we commit.

Scripture refers to ashes both as a sign of mortality and a sign of repentance. Joshua, Mordecai, Job,

and Daniel, all, during times of woe and sorrow, sat among the ashes, and others put ashes and dust up-

on their heads. In Daniel 9 we read: So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer

and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes. I prayed to the LORD my God and con-

fessed: "O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with all who

love him and obey his commands, we have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and

have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws. We have not listened to

your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name …..”

The season of Lent began in the 3rd and 4th centuries and would begin with the Day of Ashes -- Ash

Wednesday. On this day the believers would go to church after lunch or supper. During the service the

pastor would use the ashes of palms leaves and with the ashes he would then make a cross on the fore-

head of each worshipper while speaking a blessing upon their beginning the penitential journey into Lent.

WHY ashes placed upon the forehead? As a person allowed themselves to have the ashes placed up-

on them, it served as a confession and notice to ALL of two things:

First, that each of us acknowledges ourselves to be dust and to dust we shall return without Jesus

Christ. Second, that we, acknowledging our beginning and our end, are entering into a time when we will

withdraw from much of the busyness and ways of the world, even family and friends. We do this so that

we might draw near to the only One who can save us from our beginning (dust) and our end (dust) – Je-

sus Christ.

Ash Wednesday helps to provide the starting point for our journey in Lent as we examine ourselves

and understand our unworthiness to be saved and be given a Savior, and at the same time, meditate on

how great God’s love for us must be that He would give our fate to His Son so that we might be saved

from it.

American Christianity has thrown away much of the tradition of using Ashes on Ash Wednesday be-

cause it is believed too radical a truth to be true. Yet one only need to walk through a cemetery to see

that sin’s truth is that radical. Christian humbly acknowledge this radical truth through the confession of

our sins because in His radical love for us, He sent His Son to deal with our radical truth and give us that

totally radical victory He won for us through the forgiveness of our sins.

The use of Ashes upon a believer’s forehead does not conflict with Scriptures, it is rather taken from

the use of them in Scripture. The use of ashes is not a holy rite or sacred act, it merely serves as a tool to

help us give witness, meaning and understanding to our journey and meditations of Lent.

God bless you as we make our journey together this Lent focusing on the “Places of the Passion”.

February: the month devoted to love. Stores are filled with heart-shaped boxes of candy and heart-shaped cards and vases of flowers with heart-shaped gift tags. All this is available for the consumer so that he can find the appropriate expression of his devotion to his loved one. If that expression of love has been preceded by a year of thoughtful and loving words and deeds, it is welcomed and cher-ished by the recipient. If not, it is just an empty ritual, done out of duty rather than true devotion.

Our relationship to the Lord is similar. He, too, desires our sincere devotion, not empty lip service. “The Lord says: ‘These people come near to Me with their mouth and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me’ ” (Isaiah 29:13).

Stewardship is serving, helping, giving, but love is the basis for stewardship. Without love, our good deeds are empty and without merit. The first act of true stewardship is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength” (Deuteronomy 6:5). Jesus called this the most important commandment (Mark 12:29, 30). With that love for the Lord in us, we are enabled to be good stewards. Then we can do acts of good stewardship, acts of true devotion.

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, You are the owner and giver of all things. Help us to acknowledge You as the source of everything. Grant us, Lord, the same grace and faith that allowed the Macedo-nians to give so willingly and generously. In Your name we pray. Amen.

FROM EPIPHANY TO LENT...........The journey in the church year Dear Trinity Family, In January we recognized Epiphany, commemorating the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles in the persons of the Magi. During Christ's childhood He grew in stature and knowledge and was sinless for our sake. As we approach Lent and ultimately Easter, we know that He took our sins upon Himself on the cross so that we may have our sins forgiven forever. Lent is early this year and so is Easter so it's only fitting that we begin February humbling ourselves in preparation for that triumphant time that will soon be upon us. It's customary in some households to "give up something for Lent." As in many homes, I remember as a child giving up something for Lent. For some it's sweets, for others it's smoking or some other bad habit. I’m sure that if we look close, we all have something that we can "give up." Our “giving up” or sacrifice is done in light of our Lord’s “giving up” everything in order give us everything sin denies us. Prayerfully consider doing this as a spiritual exercise. When the desire for what has been “given up” arises it serves as a reminder of our Lord who denies us nothing of God’s love and grace. We all need to be thankful that our Lord Jesus Christ didn't "give up" on us. He took all our sins, our "bad habits," to the cross with him. Oh the sacrifice He made for us. Can we ever repay Him? No, but we can show our love for what only He could and did for us by attending worship to receive Him and His gifts so that we may be built up in our faith each week. Then we freely respond to His gifts by loving and taking care of our neighbor, by sharing our faith, by living our faith each and every day, by obeying His teachings. God grant us all the peace and joy of knowing that we care for Trinity Lutheran Church and School and that our mission is to "go therefore and Baptize all nations" and make our community of Christ, our family known to all the region. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall have everlasting life." May God grant you all the Love, Peace and Salvation that He has so freely given. In His Service Together, Roger Schlade, President Trinity Lutheran Church/School PH: 419.265.5626

The Lenten Season begins for us this year on

February 10 with Ash Wednesday Services. Our Lenten

series will focus on the “Places of the Passion.”

Each is drawn from Luke’s account of our Lord’s

Passion. Each week, a different section of the Gospel is read; and each week, Luke will take us

to a different place—the Places of the Passion. However, the focus will not be on those physical

places. Instead, throughout the series, the hearer is invited to gaze in wonder on the spiritual

work that our Lord does in those places. Jesus will share His strength in our times of weakness.

When Jesus enters a place, He never leaves it as He found it. The most troubling places in our

lives become the most amazing places of God’s grace when Jesus visits them. Week after week,

hearers will enter the places of the Passion, only to discover their Lord. . . waiting for them. . .

willing to share with them a love that was set in place before the foundations of the world.

Our Lenten services will be held on Wednesdays at 4:30 and 7:00 p.m. Our Ash Wednesday

Service (Feb 10) will include the imposition of ashes and communion will be offered.

As in past years, we will have a soup supper between services from 5:00—6:30 p.m.

Volunteers are needed to donate soup and desserts and also to serve and clean-up. Please sign

up on the poster boards located by each Welcome Center.

The following is the list of sermon titles and Bible verses that will be used during the

Lenten Season:

Ash Wed. Feb. 10 “A Place at the Table for You” Luke 22:1-13

Lent 2 Feb. 17 “The Upper Room: A Place of Service” Luke 22:14-38

Lent 3 Feb. 24 “Gethsemane: A Place of Strength” Luke 22:39-46

Lent 4 Mar. 2 “The Betrayal: A Place of Eternal Love” Luke 22:47-53

Lent 5 Mar. 9 “The Courtyard: A Place of Renewal” Luke 22:54-62

Lent 6 Mar. 16 “The Trial: A Place of God’s Will” Luke 22:63-23:25

Holy Thurs. Mar. 24 “The Last Supper: A Place of Forgiveness” Luke 22:7-23

Good Fri. Mar. 25 “Golgotha: A Place of Simple Love” Luke 23:44-49

Easter Mar. 27 “The Empty Tomb: A Place of Remembering” Luke 24:1-11

Take a moment each week to study God’s word as it relates to the upcoming sermon.

Remember there are devotional booklets on the Welcome Centers. Please feel free to take one.

Make sure and get your copy of the Daily Devotional titled the same. These can be found on

the Welcome centers.

Sandy and I would like to thank the members of

Trinity for the many prayers offered for my healing.

I am better even though I continue to walk with a

cane.

I have been approved to be an Intentional Interim Minister at St. Paul

Lutheran, Antwerp, Ohio. This position is for a year, or until they call a

pastor. My work will help heal the congregation and prepare St. Paul for a

new pastor.

I feel as though I represent Trinity as someone sent to help a sister

congregation! I solicit your continued prayers that I be given the strength

to do this service for God and the Body of Christ.

May God continue to bless Pastor Love, Pastor Kleimola, Principal

Landskroener, and Dcs. Hibbard as well as all my brothers and sisters in

Christ at Trinity.

Days for Girls - - Dignity for Girls

Women’s Hygiene Kits

Volunteer Seamstresses and Donations needed for Kenyan girls

We are partnering with several other churches across the U.S. and with

Deaconesses in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenya to combat

discrimination and abuse of young women. We can produce field-tested

washable women’s hygiene kits so young women won’t miss days of

school or work and fall behind their male peers.

Here’s ways you can contribute to this mission need:

Products needed: Travel size soap

Wash Cloths – sturdy enough to last three years, but not too thick for

efficient shipping and carrying

Fabric for Kits – 100% cotton broadcloth and flannel – sturdy, but soft;

bright colors to disguise stains and durable enough to last for three years.

Florals, batiks, plaids, geometric patterns all work well. (We cannot use

camouflage, bugs (including butterflies), or animal prints, girly-glam

figures. These things are taboo in these cultures.) A minimum of 2 yard

lengths will cut the most efficiently. Longer lengths are always welcome.

Fabric for Carrying Bags – 100% cotton or poly-cotton

Thread – poly-cotton – bright colors – regular spools or serger cone spools

Ribbon or sturdy rope – for the carry bags; ribbon at least ½ in. wide so it

will carry easily (for long walking distances)

Actions needed: Sewing – simple patterns are available

Kit assembly – watch for packing dates later this Spring

Assistance completing kits (lacing the ribbons in bags, adding snaps, etc.)

31, 2016. God places a great opportunity in our hands to share the salvation of Jesus through Mite offerings for LWML

Missions in the Ohio District and throughout the world. Of each dollar given, $.75 supports the Ohio District grants and $.25

provides funds for the mission grants of national LWML. With God’s blessings, we will be able to fund all of the LWML

grants. The next MITE INGATHERING at Trinity is on Sunday, February 21st. Bring the coins that have accumulated in

your Mite Box to church on that day. You may want to put your gifts into an envelope before placing them in the large Mite

Box in the narthex or near the gym door. Your Mite Box can be re-used or pick up another one. Here are suggestions to help

you fill your Mite Box: contribute an amount for blessings received; or for the number of handbags or shoes in your closet; or

pledge an amount daily or weekly to be given to the LWML. Giving an extra gift is always welcomed. If you want to write a

check, please make it payable to Trinity LWML. WHAT was on THE HAT AND MITTEN TREES? We boxed the following items for the Clothing Bank at Concordia

Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne and St. Philip Lutheran Church: seventy hats; twenty-six scarves; nineteen pairs of

children’s, women’s and men’s socks; forty-five pairs of mittens/gloves; five blankets; six hat/mitten/scarf sets and two

women’s dickies. Many thanks for your generous support.

RY2016

1. for all missionaries around the world, as they are separated from friends and family this holiday season. Ask that God would give them com-fort and courage.

2. that missionary families would be granted the things they need to serve in other countries, such as visas and work permits, solid educational institutions for their children and high-quality medical facilities near their new homes.

3. that the Lord would open up the hearts and minds of people around the world, so that His grace-filled message can be spread far and wide.

4. for short-term mission teams that are preparing to serve alongside LCMS missionaries and Lutheran partners around the world. We ask that they might be given support and safety in this work to share Christ with others.

5. for the Synod’s 36 partner church-es around the world, that they would continue to teach Christ’s Word in all of its truth and purity.

6. for the children of missionary fam-ilies, that the Lord would grant them health and flexibility as they adapt to new places and cultures.

7. for political stability around the world. Pray that God would bring peace to war-torn areas so that missionaries are able to safely enter those places to share the Gospel with hurting people.

8. for all refugees around the world, that God would work all things ac-cording to His purposes so that more people would have the opportunity to learn about His saving love.

9. for the pastors of the Independent Evangelical–Lutheran Church (SELK), the Synod’s partner church in Germa-ny, who are ministering to the flood of refugees to the country. Ask God to energize and encourage them for this fruitful but exhausting work.

10. for the work of the Global Seminary Initiative, that it might strengthen education at Lutheran seminaries around the world and help equip future church workers for service to the Church.

11. for the Bible camps that will be held in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland this summer. Pray that God would provide willing volunteers for these camps, where hundreds of youth will hear the Gospel and make new Christian friends.

12. that partners — including the Synod, LCMS districts, LCMS congre-gations, international church partners and others — would work together to effectively share the Gospel with people of every land and language.

13. that God would raise up indig-enous pastors, deaconesses and other church leaders to reach out to their own communities and share His saving Word.

14. for Christians around the worldwho are in danger, that the Lord would protect them from harm and strength-en their faith to face these trials.

15. with thanksgiving for the work God is doing in the hearts of students in Christian schools around the world, such as at Concordia Middle School in Chiayi, Taiwan, where several LCMS missionaries work.

Remember God’s work through LCMS international witness work as you pray:

INTERNATIONAL WITNESS — FEBRUARY 1–29 The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) has a long tradition of international mission work that dates back to the 1880s. This work has encompassed many different witness and mercy projects over the years in some 90 countries around the world. Today, LCMS efforts focus on training pastors, planting churches and starting schools, all while working in collaboration with partner churches in the five mission regions. God has blessed the far reach of LCMS mission work through LCMS members who support this work with prayers and gifts.
