† The term, “Orthodox,” describes our doctrine and practice best and takes the least amount of explanation to others. “Orthodox ”means“ correct, straight, true, pure, containing no false doctrine.” This is a very good description of our doctrinal position and church practices. † Out of respect for our Lord and those gathered here to worship Him, please turn your cell phones and electronic devices off or to silent mode as soon as you come into church. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated † The last two pews on the pulpit side of the church are reserved for families with small children. If you need assistance finding a place to sit, an usher will be happy to help you. † The congregation has a voice-activated AED Defibrillator to be used by trained and certified CPR personnel. † If you have small children and need to leave during the service, there is a monitor in the fellowship hall for viewing the service. Also restrooms, baby changing table, and water are available. Please clean up after your

children when leaving the sanctuary or fellowship hall. † If you have a need to get hold of Pastor Spencer after office hours, please call his cell...858-214-9879. During the day leave messages on the office phone – it is checked frequently when he's out of the office. † The service is video streamed in real time on the church website www.orthodoxlutheran.info. Sunday worship folders are on the same page.

The Call To Worship

P: I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the LORD." (Psalm 122:1) Let us prepare our hearts and minds for worship.

Silent prayer and meditation. Eternal God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, give us Your Holy Spirit who writes the preached Word into our hearts. May we receive and believe it and be cheered and comforted by it in eternity. Glorify Your Word in our hearts and make it so bright and warm that we may find pleasure in it, through Your Holy Spirit think what is right, and by Your power fulfill the Word, for the sake of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen.

DIVINE SERVICE Setting Three A, Page 184

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: In the name of the Father and of the ☩ Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: (Spoken) Amen.

P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us

The Call to Worship will begin with the ringing of the church bells at 10:25 AM for one minute. During this time all worshippers should be seated and refrain from all conversation. At the end of the bells the Pastor will address the congregation briefly, after which there should be SILENCE until the opening hymn. Please use this time to direct your thoughts toward God: pray for His blessing on your worship (page 308 in the front of the Hymnal), and read through and meditate on the Lessons for the day found in the bulletin. May God accept and bless our worship together today!

forgiveness. P: Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: (Spoken) Who made heaven and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C: (Spoken) And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

P: O almighty God, merciful Father, C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the

name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: (Spoken ) Amen.

SERVICE OF THE WORD INTROIT

P: O LORD, You are our Refuge; You have brought us into Your bountiful King-dom. You have delivered us because You delighted in us. C: Therefore, we love You, O LORD, our Strength, our Rock, and our Fortress. P: Praise the Lord! C: (Sing) Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT

ISAIAH 25:6-9. The Lord of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples on this mountain; A banquet of aged wine, choice pieces with marrow, And refined, aged wine. And on this mountain He will swallow up the covering which is over all peoples, Even the veil which is stretched over all nations. He will swallow up death for all time, And the Lord God will wipe tears away from all faces, And He will re-move the reproach of His people from all the earth; For the Lord has spoken. And it will be said in that day, “Behold, this is our God for whom we have waited that He might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation.” P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: (Spoken) Thanks be to God.

PSALM 28:6-9 P: Blessed be the Lord, C: Because He has heard the voice of my supplication. P: The Lord is my strength and my shield; C: My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; P: Therefore my heart exults, C: And with my song I shall thank Him. P: The Lord is their strength, C: And He is a saving defense to His anointed. P: Save Your people and bless Your inheritance; C: Be their shepherd also, and carry them forever.

EPISTLE REVELATION 3:20-22. Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”

P: This is the Word of the LORD. C: (Spoken) Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL P: In my distress I cried unto the LORD, and He heard me. C: Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! P: God judges the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day. Hallelujah! C: (Sing) Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

HOLY GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the Fourteenth Chapter. C: (Sing) Glory be to Thee, O Lord. LUKE 14:25-27. Now large crowds were going along with Him (Jesus); and He turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.” C: (Sing) Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom

will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life ☩ of the world to come. Amen.”

“There IS No Other Name!”

ACTS 4:5-12. On the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem; 6 and Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of high-priestly descent. 7 When they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire, “By what power, or in what name, have you done this?” 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people, 9 if we are on trial today for a benefit done to a sick man, as to how this man has been made well, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by this name this man stands here before you in good health. 11 He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief corner stone. 12 And there is salva-tion in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”

P: The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. C: (Spoken) Amen.

OFFERTORY C: (Sing) Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Merciful God, we give You praise for all Your undeserved kindness: for Your Son our Savior, for Your Spirit our Comforter, and for Your Church our home. Cause us to show our thanks for all Your benefits by giving ourselves to You and conforming our lives to Your perfect will. Fill Your Church with truth and peace. Defend her from error, want, and division. Give all ministers Your Holy Spirit and enable them to serve Your church with faithfulness and zeal. Bestow Your blessing upon all those who rule over us as Your

representatives, so that they may always work for the good of all people. We commend unto You all who are afflicted with danger, poverty, sickness of body, or sorrow of mind. Grant them answers to their prayers and cause their present sufferings to bring them eternal good. We ask You also to answer our private prayers. (Pause for silent prayer.) We give You thanks for all saints, martyrs, confessors, reformers, and all those near and dear to us whom You have taken into Your heavenly presence. Grant us Your grace to follow them as they followed Christ; and bring us, with them, to those things which You have prepared for them that love You; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT

COMMUNION NOTES. To receive the Lord’s Supper: Please proceed to the center aisle and then to the middle of the Communion rail. The Bread will be dropped into your hand. Pick up your own individual glass of wine, drink, then move directly to the left or right to dispose of the empty glass, and return to your seat by the side aisles. VISITORS: Trinity practices the Biblical teaching of “Closed Communion,” meaning that only members of our congregation or those in doctrinal fellowship with us have the privilege of joining us in the celebration of our Lord’s Supper. If you desire to commune with us today, please obtain a questionnaire from the Pastor or an Elder and follow the instruction printed there. Thank you!

PREFACE

P: The Lord be with you. C: (Sing) And with thy spirit. P: Lift up your hearts. C: (Sing) We lift them up unto the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks unto the Lord, our God. C: (Sing) It is meet and right so to do.

P: It is truly meet, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all

places give thanks unto Thee, O LORD, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God: And in the confession of the only true God we worship the Trinity in Person and the Unity in Substance, of Majesty coequal. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Thy glorious name, evermore praising Thee and saying:

SANCTUS C: (Sing) Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth; heav'n and earth are full of Thy glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He, blessed is He, blessed is He that cometh, in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

LORD'S PRAYER

P: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven: give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us: and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. C: (Sing) For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night He was betrayed, took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is My body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” Then He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is My blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

PAX DOMINI P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: (Sing) Amen. P: Behold the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the World. C: (Sing) O Christ, thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin

of the world, grant us Thy peace. Amen.

THE EXHORTATION TO HOLY COMMUNION P: Whoever now accepts these words, and believes that what they declare is true, has it. But whoever does not believe it has nothing, as he allows it to be offered to him in vain and refuses to enjoy such a saving good. C: The treasure, indeed, is opened and placed at every one's door, yea, upon his table, but it is necessary that you also claim it, and confidently view it as the words suggest to you. P: This, now, is the entire Christian preparation for receiving this Sacrament worthily. (Luther’s Large Catechism, Sacrament of the Altar, sections 35-36)

NUNC DIMITTIS C: (Sing) Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace according to Thy word, for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation, which thou has prepared before the face of all people: a light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of Thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

THANKSGIVING P: “We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.” C: (Sing) Amen.

BENEDICTION

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and † give you peace. C: (Sing) Amen, Amen, Amen. NEXT SUNDAY Third Sunday After Trinity “Obey God Above All!” Acts 5:27-33
