As Catholic Christians, we firmly believe that The Lord, our God, is God alone. There are not many Gods but just the One God who revealed himself to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and to their descendants down through the ages. But we confess our belief in this One God as the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is Jesus himself who taught us to call God “Our Father”. But Jesus also states clearly in John’s gospel that “the Father and I are one”. From this and many other passages we conclude that The Father is God and his son Jesus is God. Not two “Gods” but One God revealed to us as two distinct “Persons”. It is Jesus who also taught his disciples that there is a “Third Person” in God whom he referred to as “The Holy Spirit”. He called him the Spirit of Truth who would be their advocate and would remind them of everything he had taught them. In this Holy Spirit, also known as “the promise of the Father”, we encounter yet a third distinct Person in the One God. Not “Three Gods” but “Three Divine Persons in the One God. While the word “trinity” does not appear in the scriptures, it is undeniable that the scriptures reveal to us One God in Three distinct Persons. The diagram below illustrates the essence of this key Christian belief. Christians are mono-theists not poly-theists.

SUMMER JOURNEY OF FAITH

As is customary, JOF will meet once each month on

Sundays between the Masses during June, July, and

August. Here are the specific dates:

JUNE 24TH JULY 15TH AUGUST 12TH

JOF IS OPEN TO ALL

To anyone sensing a call to explore the faith

To Catholics wanting to deepen their faith

To family members or friends who may be

seeking a new spiritual home

Here is a golden opportunity to share the Good

News of our Catholic faith with people you care for.

Attending JOF does not require a commitment, but

rather offers an opportunity for spiritual growth.

There was not adequate interest by

catechists or parents this year to warrant

our usual VBS program. But our Coordinator

of Children’s Faith Formation, Tommie Tran,

is proposing an every other weekly gathering

of children on Wednesday nights during the

Summer from 7—9pm beginning on June

13th. Please contact Tommie for further

information or to register.

SMALL DISCIPLESHIP GROUPS

We have had bible and other kinds of study groups at St. Andrews for forty years or more. And on two different occasions—many years apart—we had numerous “Renew Groups” that met in each other’s homes. With some exceptions (in particular with Renew), individual parishioners and couples participated in these groups pretty much just for the time it took to complete a particular course--though some people participated in several groups. Over these many years, countless parishioners have seen their faith grow through these small groups. Even more importantly these groups facilitated the development of community and good friendships. So how do the present Small Discipleship Groups differ from the groups we’ve had in the past? They actually have a lot in common but they do differ somewhat in their purpose. In the first place, they are more than just study groups. And though friendship and community building will undoubtedly occur, these groups exist primarily to form small ongoing communities of intentional and missionary disciples. In the past, the primary purpose of the parish was focused on what might be called “sacramental maintenance” to churchgoers. But as recent popes and bishops have stressed the importance of evangelization, we have had to adopt new strategies that will help us learn how to bring the Good News of God’s love and mercy to the many people who may not feel connected to Christ and the church. One of those strategies is the Alpha Course which has helped hundreds of people to see the best in Christ and in his people, the church. A second strategy is the formation of SDG’s. We have 20 or more groups of various sizes studying discipleship, scripture, and prayer while forming a small community of friends and disciples. Watch the bulletin for new opportunities to become part of a Small Discipleship Group.

PREPARING FOR BAPTISM CLASS

SUNDAY JUN 3rd

1pm in Room 4 We conduct this one session program for members of our parish who are planning to baptize a child for the very first time. First time godparents are also welcome, but participation is optional. There are other expectations of parents who are going to promise to raise their child in the faith of the Church. Following this class, parents must contact Father Jack at least 30 days before the date you are requesting to see if there may be any special circumstances in scheduling the actual baptism. Child care is available upon request during the session.

PROVIDING A SAFE ENVIRONMENT

The Archdiocese of Oklahoma City through its programs, organizations and events, has numerous daily contacts with many children and young people. It is, therefore important that all our personnel, clergy, seminarians, religious, employees and volunteers, protect the rights of children and be alert to the possibility for child abuse.

Under Oklahoma State law, all individuals MUST REPORT an incident or suspicion of sexual abuse of a minor (person under 18 years of age) to the civil authoriites. The Oklahoma Department of Human Services has established a statewide abuse reporting hotline for reporting: 800-522-3511. This number is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you feel a child is in immediate danger of harm call 911.

For the safety of children and the healing of victims, the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City provides an Abuse of Minors Pastoral Response Hotline for reporting the abuse of a minor (in the past or present) by a member of the clergy or other church personnel: 720-9878. The Archdiocesan Victims Assistance Coordinator, a licensed professional counselor, will respond to calls to the Archdiocesan Pastoral Response Hotline.

A report to the Archdiocese does not relieve the individual of the duty to report child abuse to civil authorities as required by Oklahoma State Law. In Oklahoma, failure to report child abuse is a misdemeanor punishable by law.

Training for those who are interested in helping or working with the children or youth of our parish will be offered:

SUNDAY, JUNE 3rd

AT 10:20 am

IN THE MCCONNELL ROOM

This training is especially for those who want to help in the nursery, help as catechists or aides within religious education program, help with vacation bible school, or help as chaperones or drivers for our youth programs.
