From the Dean’s Pen …

Dear Friends and Family of Trinity Cathedral, Grace and Peace to you from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

With the first Sunday of December we begin our new church or liturgical year. It is also a time to prepare our hearts, lives and homes for the celebration of the coming of our Lord with Christmas, the Feast of the Holy Incarnation. Just as it had been over 2000 years ago, people stand in the midst of a world stricken with fear, wars and threats of wars, poverty, persecution, oppression, and natural disasters. It is in the midst of all of this that we experience the presence of our God and Creator. We are reminded that all of this happening around us is not the will of a “great puppeteer God” who desires to punish us. Rather, it is a manifestation of the brokenness and sinfulness of a world where humankind have made themselves rulers and deities (as we were reminded on Christ the King Sunday). Despite this world-wide condition, there is our benevolent God manifesting around us hope, strength, courage, and faith to be shared with all in need. As we hear the message of Advent, may we open our eyes and ears and experience the manifestations of an incarnate God who lives in, through, and among us. This is what Advent prepares us to know and to experience; this is what we celebrate with Christmas—God with us - Emmanuel. Blessings,

Father William+

Advent is a Good Time to be “Unamerican”

The Rev. Canon Rick Millsap, Associate Priest for Pastoral Care & Parish Life

It is a very American trait to be self-sufficient. We see ourselves as descendants of hardy

pioneers who crossed deserts, built log cabins, and skinned bears… all in one day. We, the

pioneers’ gentler descendants, multitask, work long hours, and try not

to ask for help… we can handle it.

Advent is a time, perhaps, when we should admit we can not handle everything

ourselves. We yearn for someone to help us. The world is too complicated to handle

it all alone. It is a time, where we can unclench our fists, and let go a tiny bit of being

the self-sufficient American.

Christians spend the four weeks before Christmas waiting. It is not the kind of

waiting we experience in a dentist’s office or in traffic, but more the kind of waiting we experienced as kids looking

forward to Christmas — that suppressed excitement, knowing something amazing is just around the corner.

And it is amazing. In just a few weeks, the Savior of the World is born once again in our lives. And couldn’t the

world use a Savior right now?

So take a deep breath, slow down, and wait. You do not have to handle it all yourself. Help is on the way. The

only question is not whether Jesus will come into the world again— nothing can stop that. The only questions is

how prepared our hearts will be to welcome him.

Trinity helping the Homeless this Nov.!

Every day more of our Trinity families and neighbors find their backs up against the wall. Rent is skyrocketing. Thousands are stuck in weekly motels. Homelessness is on the rise. The status quo is literally killing people. While feeding the poor is something we do regularly at Trinity Cathedral, we need to do more to reach the roots of homelessness in our community.

Here are some things you can do this fall to be part of the solution:

Sign up at our website trinityreno.org to be on our “Home Means Nevada” mailing List (Under

“Outreach” tab) so you will be up-to-date about actions you can take. Plan to help staff the Homeless Overflow Shelter in Nov. In the winter months, we volunteer to staff the

overflow shelter. You can sign up to help by filling out the form at http://bit.ly/trinityhelps

Emmanuel: God With Us Advent Retreat Sat., Dec. 14, 9:00 AM– Noon

A retreat or quiet day invites you to withdraw in time and space from daily activity: to take stock, share with others in worship and in quiet, and allow yourself to be stretched a bit, with the hope of returning nourished and refreshed to ordinary life. For many Christians, regular retreats are as important as regular vacations. During this busy holiday season especially, it is good to pause and catch our breath.

During our half-day retreat, you will explore what it means to each of us personally that God is now walking among us. In the middle of this hurried season, take a few hours to pause and listen for a deeper, quieter note beneath all the rushing.

Cost of the retreat is $10.00 for materials and lunch, payable the day of the retreat; scholarships available. You can sign up at the back of the Church. If you have questions, you can see Rev. Rick after Church or contact him at [email protected]

“Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel’, which means, ‘God is with us.” — Matthew 1:23

Taizé services —5pm on Wednesdays during Advent!

On December 4, 11, and 18 a simple contemplative prayer service in the manner of

Taizé will take place in the sanctuary. This service runs only about 30 minutes, but

it is a great way to slow down and take in the beautiful stillness of the season.

An Invite for those who have lost a loved-one in the past year … A Contemplative Eucharist for the Bereaved

Thursday, December 5th at 12:10 PM Holidays such as Christmas that involves family gatherings and the sharing of fond memories, can be a bit difficult to face for the first time without our loved one’s presence. On Thursday, December 5th, at 12:10 PM (afternoon) we will have a “Contemplative

Service with Eucharist and Healing” especially designed for those who have lost loved ones in the past year. This service offers wholeness and connectedness as we reconcile our broken lives and world with our God who comes to be in and with us, God Emmanuel.

Bible & Books in December!

In December, we are reading, Because of Bethlehem by Max Lucado. From Amazon: “Max Lucado loves Christmas. Let the sleigh bells ring. Let the carolers sing. The more Santas the merrier. The more

trees the better. He loves it because somewhere someone will ask the Christmas questions: What’s the

big deal about the baby in the manger? Who was he? What does his birth have to do with me? And the answers he’s found give us all hope.”

Copies were available in November for purchase in the back of the Church for $9.00. Amazon has used paperback copies starting at about $5.67 and the Kindle version is $9.99. New paperback copies are $11.75.

Bible & Books meets every Sunday at 9:00 AM in Conference Room A downstairs in the Parish Hall across the parking lot from the Church) Join us for coffee or tea and great conversation!

Stewardship and Three Forms of Giving

P a g e 4

The Stewardship of Finances in the Episcopal Church

Question: Why are we asking for money?

Answer: Every committed and active member of a parish have a responsibility to give of their monetary gifts to

the work of ministry and the building up of God’s kingdom on earth. This has been our tradition even before the

time of Christ with our Jewish roots. All that we have is God’s and we are blessed in returning 10% (a tithe) as

thanksgiving for God’s work. A commitment is made of our income with regular giving pledged to the operating

budget of a church. This campaign is done yearly during the Fall season with a short appeal period while a

budget for the next year is being formulated. It often involves an invitation to submit a written pledge, with a

reminder follow-up letter and a phone call if needed. Knowing that Trinity has lacked a history of stewardship

education, the last three years we have introduced a process in raising our awareness of this responsibility and

privilege in serving Christ. We are most grateful for those who have responded faithfully as we see a growing

number of parishioners making this commitment in order for your leaders to create a budget for our expanding

ministries and work.

As we are soon to launch our Capital Campaign in January for some major renovation work and building, it is

important for you to have an understanding of the following information.

Three Forms of Giving in the Episcopal Tradition

The first form of giving in the Episcopal Tradition is the Annual Pledge Campaign. This involves making a yearly

commitment of regular weekly, monthly or quarterly giving to the working budget of the parish. This covers

administration expenses, staff and clergy salaries and benefits, utilities, maintenance of property, and ministry

programs.

The second form of giving in the Episcopal Tradition is a Capital Campaign. This type of giving is an appeal that

occurs once a decade or two. It involves sacrificial giving over and beyond the annual pledge for the purpose of

capital improvements to the buildings or campus because of deterioration, needed improvements, or

expansion. This type of giving usually comes from assets beyond weekly income, like savings, trusts, or

investments dividends.

The third form of giving in the Episcopal Tradition is Major Gifts. This is giving that is often a one-time life event.

It occurs through designated gifts usually from one’s estate, or large investment returns and inheritance.

Legacy planning is encouraged by faithful members to include their church in their wills. Often this giving is

designated toward the church’s Endowment Fund.

Interim Music Director’s Report

Barbara Small continues to capably lead the St. Cecelia Choir while Howard Bennett remains on the organ bench as interim. We are very fortunate to have Pat Gardner serving as our excellent accompanist for the choir. We’re happy to report that we have gained three new choir members: John Lilley tenor, Brandon Bishop, bass, and Aja Johnson soprano. Christmas music is being prepared and rehearsals are in full swing. We will have brass for Christmas Eve as well as the regular prelude of choir and musical offerings beginning at 10:30. Additional musical talent is being recruited as well for Musician Search Committee.

Musician Search Committee Report The Vestry created the Musician Search Committee at its July 22 meeting. The committee consists of two Vestry members (Howard Bennett and Jim Lamb, co-chairs); two members elected by the St. Cecilia Choir and approved by Vestry (Josette Dornoff and Margaret Zuccarini); and one member at-large appointed by Vestry (Barbara Small). The committee has met seven times. The first responsibility was to review current documents and job description to develop a revised job description that would incorporate the expectations of the Organist/Choir Master. The new description was approved by the Vestry on October 21st. Because of its importance and the expectations included in the new description, the Vestry voted the position to be full-time. The job description is available on the Trinity website (www.trinityreno.org) under the Music link.

Beginning November 1, the position was announced on several national websites. As of November 26thwe have a received 17 applications! Our announcement indicates the application process ends on January 31, 2020 with the evaluation and interviews to begin in February. We anticipate a final selection may happen on or before June.

In the meantime, the committee is working on the creation of a Trinity Music Guild. The primary purpose of the Guild is to support the music ministry of Trinity Cathedral and to assist the Trinity Organist/Choir Master in coordinating, organizing, and managing music programs, concerts, and other performances. We anticipate having the Guild in place in early 2020.

Art, Music, & Godly Play

This month, we journey to Bethlehem, in a four-part story that builds up to that moment in the stable when God

became human with us. What a great & mysterious story!

12/01 — Advent I 12/08 — Advent II 12/15 — Advent III 12/22 — Advent IV

12/29 — Mystery of Christmas

Coming up…

at the 9am Service in December

Sun., Dec. 1— Jesus remembers the great flood, and reminds people that the world could change at any moment! Especially when we don’t expect it!

Sun., Dec. 8— Cousin John (the Baptist) speaks out in the wilderness saying: Repent! For the Kingdom of heaven has come near.

Sun., Dec. 15— John has his doubts, and writes to Jesus (from prison) to see if he’s the real deal.

Sun., Dec. 22— Joseph has a dream about the amazing thing that’s happening within Mary!

Sun., Dec. 29— “The Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory!” This beautiful piece of poetry points to the wonder and beauty of the incarnate Christ.

Where is life breaking in?

The Church year is turning over, my friends. And

contrary to what the bare trees and the hard earth

might suggest, there is something new afoot! At the

9am service, we will be singing the “Canticle of the

Turning” for our closing hymn each week, and I can’t

think of a more valid modern take on Mary’s

Magnificat: “My heart shall sing of the day you bring,

let the fire of your justice burn! Wipe away all tears,

for the dawn draws near, and the world is about to

turn!” We all have a hand in that turning. Are you

ready? I hope you feel a tug of conscience and hope

this Advent season.

With hope, Mikayla+

ST MARTHA'S ALTAR GUILD AND LINEN MINISTERIES Have you ever considered joining the Trinity Cathedral Altar Guild? We are looking for new members at this time. The commitment is one weekend per month with an extra weekend once a year. We prepare for the services on Saturday morning then on Sunday we set up before and clean up after the three services. There are other events, such as funerals, throughout the year in which we also participate. It's impossible to describe the spiritual joy and fellowship we all experience. And gentlemen, this is not just for women. We also have men in our ranks. This would be a perfect ministry for a married couple. We would be more than happy to discuss Altar Guild membership with anyone interested. And if you enjoy ironing, the Linen ministry would be perfect for you. This commitment is also once per month. The linen is picked up early in the week. Then it's washed, ironed and returned before services the following weekend. The best part is that you make your own schedule. It is very rewarding. With the growth of the Cathedral we find our resources are being stretched to the limits. Please give Altar Guild and Linens consideration. Please consider joining us for a weekend at your convenience. Then you can really see if either ministry would be a good fit. Below are listed the names and phone numbers of the Altar Guild team captains. Please feel free to contact any of us if you have any questions, explanations or concerns. Ann Crase 775-338-6376, Carol Roman 775-229-3884, Juliette Leneaux 775-247-7703, and Pat Ikehara 775-853-7706

All general business meetings of the parish are open to members. The proposed

agenda is generally posted in the church, on the Sunday

preceding the meeting.

We can usually be found at

these liturgies on Saturday &

Sunday:

5:00 PM (Sat.): Robert

Andrade.

7:30 AM: Eloy Ituarte, David

Morgan (Treasurer)

9:00 AM: Kate Flocchini (Chancellor & Clerk), and

Gretchen Wolfe. 11:00 AM: Robert Andrade (Sr.

Warden), Lindsay Campbell,

Lynne Charlat (Jr. Warden),

Julie Demler, Guy Moreno,

Jim Lamb (Secretary), John

Lilley, and Dorothy Walrath.

November Vestry Summary Our meeting began after our dinner at 6:00 PM with our candle lighting, opening prayer, and bible study led by Robert Andrade on the topic of St. Francis. David Chute was a guest and presented on behalf of and under the guidance of the Property Committee a proposal to create a volunteer ministry called Ministry of Special Services (MOSS) where a data base of volunteers is created to reach out to when special projects arrive – like when Altar Guild does semi-annual cleaning, or the parish hall floor needs stripping and waxing. The agenda, October Minutes, and finance reports were approved. The expense figure was higher than usual because of 3 major repairs with the furnaces in turning them on for the season. In regard to the Annual Pledge program, only 173 have been received to date compared to 215 last year. We are behind from last year’s trend to date. The FFA Committee reports that the 2020 Budget process has begun and of major consideration is the large increase needed to handle a full time church musician. Also, a professional audit was done on the 2018 books. All is in order; only recommendations are to improve the check/invoice payment process and not have a church credit card in an individual’s name. Ministry reports state that the New Members Integration Committee held a social after the 5:00 PM services for new members. It was a successful and enjoyable event held in the Bishop Lewis Chapel. Hospitality reports the work with the Oktoberfest Annual Campaign kick-off, the Angel Tree dinner, the St. Paul’s Fund Raiser with the Phantom movie. All the volunteers, including EYC help, were greatly appreciated! Property Committee reported on boiler repairs and an issue once again with the keyless system at the parish hall glass entrance doors. All have been repaired. The Dean reports that Bishop Jim will be visiting for Advent II, Dec. 7th for the Saturday evening service only to do the three adult confirmations. The bishop cannot be here on Sunday because of another commitment. There will be an ecumenical pulpit exchange on Sunday, January 26 with the 11:00 Service. Father William will be at Good Shepherd; Rev. Chris Marshall from First United Methodist will be with Trinity. There is an Interfaith Thanksgiving Service for Sunday, November 24th at 6:30 PM. Trinity has been to host the service and a reception to follow. The Vestry Nomination Committee will be dealt with as a part of the special meeting we are having for Wednesday evening, the 20th, since we do not have the full slate of information available for discussion. With Administration Reports, the Musician Search Committee states that at present there are 14 applicants with varying credentials and education. We are taking applications till the end of January. Teleconferencing will be the initial interview process; final candidates will be brought in to accompany a worship service, lead the choir, and do a recital. The committee had 8 meetings and has also developed the charter for the Music Guild that will be in place to work with the church musician. The Vestry passed the Charter. Staff evaluations have been underway and all is well with some positive recommendation with salaries. We talked about parking issues as well as the possibility of holding a rummage sale in March to clean out church closets. Next Meeting is Thursday, December 19th.

Thank you for your on-going financial support!
