7:30 a.m.isaiah 43:16–20 (nrsV)

16Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, 17who brings out chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: 18Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. 19I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. 20The wild animals will honor me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people,

11:00 a.m.mattheW 26:47–54 (the message)47–49The words were barely out of his mouth when Judas (the one from the Twelve) showed up, and with him a gang from the high priests and religious leaders brandishing swords and clubs. The betrayer had worked out a sign with them: “The one I kiss, that’s the one—seize him.” He went straight to Jesus, greeted him, “How are you, Rabbi?” and kissed him. 50-51Jesus said, “Friend, why this charade?” Then they came on him—grabbed him and roughed him up. One of those with Jesus pulled his sword and, taking a swing at the Chief Priest’s servant, cut off his ear. 52-54Jesus said, “Put your sword back where it belongs. All who use swords are destroyed by swords. Don’t you realize that I am able right now to call to my Father, and twelve companies—more, if I want them—of fighting angels would be here, battle-ready? But if I did that, how would the Scriptures come true that say this is the way it has to be?”

6:00 p.m.mark 6:14–29 (niV)14King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.” 15Others said, “He is Elijah.” And still others claimed, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago.” 16But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, the man I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!”

17For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. 18For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” 19So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him. 21Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. 22When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.” 24She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” “The head of John the Baptist,” she answered. 25At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” 26The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, 28and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29On hearing of this, John’s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

A powerful week on two fronts!

Since 1979, the third week in July has been the week that our Annual Church Revival has been held. The third week in July has always been a powerful week for us.

During this week, we have had Dr. William Augustus Jones, Dr. Roscoe D. Cooper, Dr. Anthony C. Campbell, Dr. Dearing E. King, Dr. Charles Walker, Dr. James Forbes, Dr. Charles G. Adams and Dr. Frederick Douglas Haynes III as our annual church revivalists.

This week, as we gather to be blessed once again by the powerful preaching of the Reverend Dr. Frederick Douglas Haynes III, the power of God will be felt by members, visitors and friends in some amazingly new and refreshing ways. We anxiously look forward to this powerful week on the home front.

For a little over a decade now, the Children’s Defense Fund has been meeting the same week as our Annual Revival and they have been meeting near Knoxville, Tennessee on Alex Haley’s farm. Pastor Otis Moss III is at the Annual Children’s Defense Fund Annual Summer Program this week.

Many of our members are not familiar with the work of the Children’s Defense Fund. Dr. John Hope Franklin helped to draft the manifesto which set forth the hopes and the goals of the Fund, which meets this week in Tennessee at the Haley farm. This is a powerful week!

So that you can enjoy the full flavor of where it is Pastor Moss is, and what so many of our members have been a part of (Dr. Iva Carruthers, Georgette Greenlee and Mary Crayton have all been to the Haley farm.), let me share with you Dr. John Hope Franklin’s “manifesto” concerning the Children’s Defense Fund.

“Our desires and hopes for our children are reasonable to the point of modesty, but we wish no less and no more for them than we wish for every child in every land. We want our children to grow up with healthy bodies and healthy minds in a drug-free society, with ample tools for engaging in critical thinking and making sound judgment.

We want African American children to have every opportunity to achieve success in school and to understand fully the world of work, what is involved in acquiring marketable skills, and how important it is to make a significant contribution to that world.

order of Worshippastor’s paGe

We want African American children to learn that the greatest success lies not so much in amassing a fortune, as in having a concern for others and in recovering and preserving the tradition of selfless service to family and community.

We want African American children to fully appreciate the artistic, moral and spiritual values that will bring to them much of their heritage of the past and make it possible to pass these on to their successors. We want them to have an understanding and appreciation for family, for their own rich heritage derived from their African forbearers as well as their American experience, the kind of understanding that will simultaneously provide them with roots and wings!”

As Pastor Moss presents for this summer’s Children’s Defense Fund at the Haley farm, this is a powerful week. Those who travel to the farm on behalf of the Children’s Defense Fund each year have pledged themselves to do “everything humanly possible to strengthen the Black family, save Black children through succor as well as love and to improve and modernize our schools in order to enhance significantly their chances for education and life success. In this gigantic task, we shall utilize to the fullest the resources of parents, children and the general public.”

While we are being spiritually empowered this week, those who gather at the Haley farm are being empowered intellectually and programmatically to make a difference for

African American children and for African children throughout the world! That is a part of what you hear each third Sunday, as we dedicate new babies.

That is what I call you to embrace and to commit to as we “serve this present age!”

Sincerely yours,

Pastor Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.

Boycott Disney, Pirates of the

Caribbean

Starting in February of 2005, we began to post a number of items regarding Walt Disney’s proposed plans for showing Island Caribs as blood thirsty man eaters. In Dominica, where parts of the film were shot, then Carib Chief Charles Williams loudly protested the movie and condemned select members of the Carib Territory for collaborating with Disney.

The Government of Dominica warmly welcomed Disney, guided by the incredible notion that a media giant showing local natives as cannibals would promote tourism to the island. The movie was also shot in St. Vincent. Since then, Chief Williams was deposed by the Government of Dominica (although to what extent Williams embarrassing the government over this issue played any role in the government’s decision is unclear for now).

Other indigenous communities, including Tainos, Garifuna, and the Caribs of Trinidad, also vigorously protested the movie in the news media. Indian Country Today, in the United States, ran an editorial that was very critical of Disney’s plans.

Now, the movie is about to hit theaters and, if anything, it appears to be worse than was first imagined. A trailer for the film clearly shows the Caribs roasting live people on spits and holding captives to be eaten...in a stark reminder of some of the most vile imperialistic imagery produced in the early colonial era. Such images are getting a new lease on life thanks to Disney, which with the resources that rival those of a colonial power, has now dedicated itself to popularizing and

internationalizing images of the Caribs as “cannibals.” You can see the movie trailer at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAx02SQ5Mjs&mode=related&search=piratesthecaribbeandead manschest.

Images that follow are stills from the trailer, accompanied by one colonial illustration that seems to have been part of the corpus of visual imperial denigrations that the movie so

cheerfully enhances.Let us keep in mind that such depictions were

used to enslave and murder the ancestors of today’s Caribs, there was never anything innocent or “fun” about these portrayals. In addition, generations of Carib-descended school children in the Caribbean have been taught that their ancestors were savage cannibals.

Shame over ancestry was inculcated as a matter of routine. In my own field research experience,

pastor’s paGe

I have encountered individuals in their forties and fifties who told me very directly that the main reason they did not wish to self-identify as Caribs is that people in the wider world see Caribs as cannibals, as inhuman man eaters, and they found the stigma unbearable. Disney is playing its part in centuries of ethnocide.

This action on the part of Disney, flying in the face of countless protests, is not accidental, nor just uninformed carelessness. Let’s place these images in their current context as well. This is a time of renewed generalizing about the “non-West” as the “uncivilized” world of inhumane acts of savage atrocities. Anti-immigrant attitudes are on the rise in many Western countries.

Anyone “brown-skinned” is deemed a potential terrorist. This is not inflammatory exaggeration on my part: for a glimpse at the tip of the iceberg, look at reports produced within the Canadian media itself: http://www.cbc.ca/news/viewpoint/vp_mallick/20060616.html, and, http://www.cbc.ca/news/about/burman/20060614.html.

Many white citizens adjoining Native reserves seem to feel empowered now to express openly derogatory views about Natives, even joining in the occasional riot where they can bash some in the face. A peaceful gathering of Natives in Canada is widely depicted as “terrorism.” You don’t believe me? Please have a look at pages from the Caledonia Citizens Alliance where members of the public submit their feedback on the issue of the Native reoccupation of their territory.

Images specifically of charred bodies, hung like roasted offerings, have also been popularized in the international press, especially when showing the “horrid” acts of Iraqi insurgents in Fallujah who captured and killed four American mercenaries in March of 2004.

All of the raw material, daily news, centuries of inherited stereotypes, revived bigotry, fear, hatred and paranoia are all out there ready to be fused in people’s minds who are thus predisposed to making a series of associations. One line of association is that linking Al Qaida with all Muslims, then immigrants, “brown skin,” Natives, and finally Caribs. The other line of associations to complement the first: terrorism, insurgence, resistance and cannibalism.

This is the world we are inheriting, folks! Either we deal with these issues head on, or sit back and let the tide of a new nazism wash over us with the help of our own quiescence.

Disney’s concept of family “fun” is about as light hearted as showing groups of Jews as rats. Disney won’t do exactly that, since that is anti-semitism, and numerous holocaust memorials tell us “never again.” But really, never again? That seems to be either unduly hopeful or just terribly naive.

You are encouraged to actively protest and boycott Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and any and all Disney products. Such cultural imperialism cannot be allowed to pass without consequence.

JuDge nominee hAynes oversAw torture policy

This week the Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a second hearing on the nomination of William J. Haynes II to a permanent judicial seat on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Haynes serves as General Counsel for the Department of Defense (DOD).

Judge Haynes’ nomination leads many to raise concerns about his role in overseeing U.S. policies allowing torture and the inhumane treatment of prisoners and detainees. Therefore, it is critical that members of the Senate use the nomination hearing process to consider carefully Mr. Haynes’ role in overseeing the development of detention and interrogation policies.

The incidents of torture and human rights violations that took place at Abu Ghraib prison, as well as more recent concerns about U.S. torture, detention and interrogation policies in Afghanistan, Iraq, Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere, make Mr. Haynes’ record as DOD General Counsel all the more relevant to the nomination process for a federal appellate court position.

As DOD General Counsel, Mr. Haynes oversaw the development of policies for the military’s handling of prisoners. He was the primary architect of DOD policies which:

Defined torture so narrowly that it was later disavowed by the administration; Failed to apply the Geneva Convention protections to detainees captured in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the world; Authorized private, and therefore unaccountable, civilian contractors to participate in interrogations.

Communities of faith share a profound commitment to affirm the dignity and fair treatment of all people. Every person should have the protection of the law. This is a fundamental value of our democratic society.

Expediency and short-term “necessity” are no excuse for rejecting the rule of law or the

moral imperative of justice. In fact, our failure to follow international human rights principles will only serve to undermine our standing in the global community. From a moral and faith perspective, there are grave concerns about Mr. Haynes’ fitness to serve on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Click http://www.ucctakeaction.org/haynes to contact your senators and urge them to use the confirmation process to investigate fully Mr. Haynes’ views on detention, interrogation and torture.

cuBA council of churches

Blessings to all our members and to all with special connection to the United Church of Christ’s Global Ministries’ Latin America and the Caribbean programs, I have been affiliated with the Cuba Council of Churches since the 1980s. I have several close Cuban friends who work with the Cuba Council of Churches and you have heard me preach about our affiliation and the Black Theology Project’s trips to Cuba.

The sermon I preached for the dedication of the Martin Luther King Center in Havana over 20 years ago was sponsored by the Cuban Council of Churches. At that service, the translator accepted Christ while translating my sermon. (You can pick up a copy of that sermon today.)

Our denomination’s Global Ministries is committed to calling for an end to the U.S. sanctions against Cuba. Currently the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba has prepared a second report that recommends the U.S. place an embargo on aid to Cuba through the globally recognized Cuban Council of Churches.

The so-called “Commission” is a right wing political group determined to bring down Castro’s government, no matter who gets hurt in the process. The Cuban Council of Churches, on the other hand, has been a non-partisan global mission partners for decades. I have worked with them for two decades.

Global Ministries supports its ecumenical witness as a Christian organization and attests to its integrity of ministry and mission. The Area Office of Latin America and the Caribbean of Global Ministries asks you to join us in speaking out and taking action and write to President Bush and Secretary Rice and petition to stop support of this ban against aid to Cuba through the Cuban Council of Churches.

Visit http://capwiz.com/churchworld/issues/alert or http://ga3.org/campaign/cubareligiousfreedom to join Church World Service or Faithful America’s efforts to speak out against the curtailment of humanitarian aid to Cuba. Or if you prefer, you may visit the State Department at http://www.state.gov <http://www.state.gov/> and the White House at http://www.whitehouse.gov <http://www.whitehouse.gov/> to make your contact.

I thank you for helping me with this matter and I ask you to send your letters of support and affirmation to:

Rev. Reginald Williams, Jr.

A quality education is a right of all children, which is currently not fully protected. Currently, in the state of Illinois, we find that, all too often, the quality of a child’s education is dictated by the zip code in which they live.

The spending gap for public schools in the state of Illinois is steadily increasing. In fact, Illinois ranks number 50 out of 50 states with regard to the size of the gap in per pupil education spending between the states’ lowest and highest districts. Roundout School District in Lake County spends $23,799 per student, while Central School District in Tazewell County (Central Illinois Spends $4438 per student). According to the 2004 statistics, Chicago Public Schools spend $4810 on each student. According to statewide statistics, the average dollar amount spent per child is now $5164 (up $200 from Fiscal Year 2005). This still is far less than the $6405 that has been determined to be an adequate level of funding per student. Included in this spending is the ability to pay teachers in order to reduce or inflate class size, to purchase learning aids such as computers and other aids; and to have foreign language and fine arts courses, etc. Funding per child dictates the quality of education to which a child will be exposed.

This disparity is greatly due to the fact that funding for public education in Illinois relies heavily on property taxes. Therefore, those affluent areas, because of the property taxes paid, are able to place more money into their school systems than are the less affluent and low income areas around the state. Moreover, the federal No Child Left Behind Act appears to do exactly the opposite of what it says. In addition to being underfunded from its

initiation, the NCLB Act requires annual achievement improvements among the poor, minority and disabled students with penalties for those who do not improve. However, educational funding, based primarily on property taxes, does not support improvements because the bias financially favors schools with the wealthiest tax base, while kicking poor, minority, and/or disabled students in the behind.

This system of funding education is unacceptable. A child’s quality of education should not be determined by how much money their parents or neighbors make. A child’s quality of education should be guaranteed by that child’s ability and opportunity to learn.

The Fiscal Year 2006 budget has already been passed. No funding reform for public schools was adopted for this year. However, we can begin now to demand that beginning in Fiscal Year 2007, some changes be made to the funding system for public schools so that each and every pupil in this state is offered an adequate quality education.

I urge you to sign the post card given to you today and contact your legislator to let them know that you demand reform in the way that education is funded so that every child in the state of Illinois has access to an adequate quality education.

As senior pastor of Friendship-West Baptist Church since

1983, Rev. Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III leads one of the largest church congregations in Dallas. In the last decade alone, the 28-year-old church has grown from approximately

500 members to over 8,000 members.A native of San Francisco, California, Dr. Haynes

is the third in a line of well-known, socially con-scious preachers. He graduated from Bishop Col-lege with a bachelor of arts in religion and English, earned a master of divinity degree from Southwest-ern Baptist Theological Seminary and received hon-orary doctorates of divinity from Paul Quinn Col-lege and Texas College. In May 2005, Rev. Haynes received his doctorate in ministry from the illustri-ous Oxford University in England. His progressive, Bible-based message has reached millions of people around the world, including Africa, Australia, the Caribbean and throughout North America.

A true proponent of faith-based community development, Dr. Haynes and the Friendship-West family are moving towards a vision that God gave Dr. Haynes more than ten years ago for a “Christian community within a community.” The visionary project, named Friendship Community, is currently being developed on 60 acres of land in southwest Dallas. When completed, the multi-purpose com-munity will include a school, athletic complex, offices, retail space, a holistic health center, a 315,000-square-foot Worship and Family Life Center, and a museum dedicated to the history of the African American church — the first such museum in the country.

With a gift for relating to young people, Dr. Haynes has taken steps towards reaching the

young secular community, which has been turned off by tradition and who require a more contem-porary method towards receiving Christ. In 2001, he was asked to close the #1-rated Dallas morning radio show with a spiritual segment called “In-spirational Vitamin.” In 2002, he added a fourth worship service, “Saturday Night Live,” an hour- long service designed to reach the unchurched and unsaved. Both methods have proven successful with a 50% increase in membership of people ages 18–29. His out-of-the-box approach and empower-ing preaching style has made him one of the most respected pastors among this generation.

A firm believer in community involvement, Dr. Haynes is vice president of the American Pastors Coalition and a former board member of the Dallas Urban League. He serves on the honorary commit-tee of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Project Foundation based in Washington, D.C. He is the executive secretary of the Evangelism Board of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. and is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Rev. Haynes is the Founder/CEO of FDH Ministries, Inc. and Chairman of the Board of FW Empowerment, the community development corporation of the church.

Dr. Haynes has received numerous awards and recognition. Like great preachers before him, he was inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers at Morehouse College. In 2000, he was invited by U.S. President Bill Clinton to participate in dialogue regarding issues impacting the African American community, and he has spo-ken on national platforms, including the National Urban League Convention.

Dr. Haynes is married to Debra Peek-Haynes, and they are the parents of one beautiful daughter, Abeni Jewel Haynes.
