strategies of Encouragement,
Mentoring and Monitoring
(EMM) to achieve a high rate
of retention and persistence
for SSS TRiO Scholars.
The SSS TRiO Scholars project helps to ame-
liorate some of the academic barriers that
Students encounter daily by employing aca-
demic success strategies that have a proven
record of facilitating a high rate of graduation
and transfer to a four (4) year college.

There are lots of helpful features in iPhones and iPads and Android phones and tablets
that can help you succeed in your studies. There are calendar and reminder apps that, once
you enter in your classes and appointments, can keep you on schedule and make sure you
get to class on time. You can set up reminders for one-time or for a whole semester of re-
peating events. Using iCloud or another cloud service can make sure your calendar, ap-
pointments, contacts, notes and reminders are the same across all of your devices, too.
There are voices inside those little devices that can read you books or webpages out
loud, too. Look under Accessibility on your device for Vision and you will find voiceover
on Apple products and TalkBack on Android units. These apps can read words, pages or
entire documents out loud to you. They can also highlight or spotlight the text as it is read,
helping some people focus on what they are hearing. You may also find the Speak Screen
and Speak Word options useful for listening along as you read.
There are other features inside phones and tablets that can make print larger, or bold and
easier to read. You can make the icons larger or increase screen color contrast as well. You
can even speed up or slow down the amount of time between taps for double taps.
NCC offers apps to our students to improve reading efficiency and comprehension. You
can download and use Texthelp’s Read & Write Gold on your phone, tablet or PC to read
your text out loud, predict what you are going to type (which can help with spelling and
word choice), or even give you word or picture definitions of words from its dictionaries.
If you have any questions about any of these apps or functions on your various portable
devices, please stop in to our CSD Access Lab in Building U (CSD) room 109 and ask our
AT Specialist about them. You can ask what AT stands for too, if you like.
We’ll be looking forward to seeing you on Tuesdays or Thursdays between 10 AM and
3:30 PM.

Secrets towards Success: Submitted by Karen Granville, TRiO
Grant Technician
Knowing what type of learning style you prefer, may help you deter-
mine what type of study skills work best for you. Some study skills you
can use include:
Rehearsal and rote learning. This can be done by memorizing in-
formation, re-reading chapters and/or notes, and re-writing notes.
This can help to store what you learned into your brain to retrieve
when needed. Re-writing information in your own words is a great
method to help you understand what you read or heard.
Flashcards. Flashcards are a great way to write down key infor-
mation in an abridged format to help you recall what you learned.
Keywords. Keywords can be used to help you condense large
amounts of information into short notes. A sample would be an out-
line showing specific topics to remember or discuss. Another would
be the use of diagrams to show a visual summary.
Visual Imagery. Using images in your mind to help you “ walk
through” an environment or thought process.
Knowing what type of learning style you prefer, may help you deter-
mine what type of study skills work best for you. Next issue, I’ll talk
about some more of the different types of study skills.
