Georg Philipp Kress received a musical education that allowed him to become an acclaimed virtuoso violinist, with a career that took him from the Mecklenburg court at Schwerin to Plön, Lübeck, Rostock, and ultimately to the University of Göttingen as Konzertmeister. Telemann, his godfather, gave him both his Christian names, but
there is no record of his subsequent involvement with the Kress family. Georg Philipp’s father died tragically young in 1728. Quite apart from his elder brother Ludwig Albrecht, who only left home in 1731 to begin a musical apprenticeship at the court of Löwenstein-Wertheim in Kleinheubach am Main, Georg Philipp had three younger siblings. His widowed mother barely coped; she died soon after, leaving the
orphans in the care of their maternal grandmother. The title page suggests the second part being played on a violin, but the part itself is in Scordatura and entitled ‘Viola d’Amour’. A discrepancy like this is a common
occurrence and we must presume the violin part lost. The existing Viola d’amore part poses a problem in terms of octaves: It is written in Alto and Bass clefs, an unusual choice for Viola d’amore, and fits well on a Bass Viol in the given octave. However, put in treble clef and octave higher, the middle part makes more sense on a Viola d’amore as well as on a violin.
