What Is Reader Response? - Reader’s reactions to literature by interpreting the text in their own
way
Goal of Reader Response- To be able to look at the literature, and take something from it.
Reader Response is relating to the reader’s personal life.
Who was the founder/ creator of Reader Response?- Reader Response started in the late 1960’s.
-The critics in the group were Stanley Fish, Wolfgang Iser, and Norman N. Holland.
-They started questioning different things, such as how reader response creates literary text.
How did Reader/ Response come about?- School of criticism, which emerged in the 1970s
- It considers reader’s reactions to literature as vital to interpreting the meaning of the text.
- Reader Response theorists share two beliefs:
1) Role of the reader cannot be omitted from our understanding of literature
2) Readers do not passively consume the meaning by an objective literary text; rather they actively make the meaning they find in literature
How can a reader recognize Reader Response in songs?- Reader response can be recognized in songs quite simply.
- Whenever you find yourself listening to a song and feeling what it’s saying, is Reader Response.
- All songs can relate to someone’s life, but the way someone interprets it is also an example of Reader Response.
