Small issue this month so let’s get to it!

Be sure to flip to page 9 of this issue for information on the upcoming Drive-In Movie night that I will be hosting at my home. Looking forward to this event. It’s been fun in the past and now that we get to enjoy our wondeful weather let’s make the most of it with a throwback to an activity that was much bigger back when our cars were new.

On a personal point of order...

Those that know me know that I am a decidedly “Political” person. So when I saw these British car themed strips of a Political cartoon that I make a habit to read every day I just had to include them in my column this month. Especially

since the strip is poking fun at my side of the political aisle AND at a decidedly inferior product that was pushed out of Morris Garages (on that last point I would expect that all Triumph Owners regardless of their political philosophy can find to be a piece of that much sought after common ground.)

I sent a message to the artist asking if and how I might obtai permission to include them in an issue of the DCTRA newsletter. I was really surprised to get a responce the very next day!

His responce...

“Dave, please do use it! I’m a former Aus-tin-Healy owner.”

10 TRIUMPHS WERE DRIVEN TO THE MEETING!

VISITORS: There were no visitors or guests.

It is November already! Where has this year gone? Wheels of Britain, The B.E.A.T., Triumphest 2011, and the Vintage Voyage have all come and gone. Soon the Christmas light tour and the DCTRA Christmas party will be coming up. That will be wrapping up another year and ready to start the cycle again next year.

Many hours of committee work have been spent by George Durkin, Marie Thompson, Linda Nicholson, Cathy Nuss, Betsy Kavash, John Reynolds and I. A lot has been accomplished toward our own Triumphest 2012 event. I’m re-ally quite pleased as to how much has been done ant to the results. The venue, theme/logo, bro-chure, events (so far), registration form, web site, they are all shaping up well and I think we will be proud to hear everyone attending exclaim “What an enjoyable event! ‘Can’t wait until Triumphest 2017!”

We have a new Membership Coordinator, Trudy Crable. She is updating our membership list to reflect our new members and the correc-tions to our addresses and phone numbers that you gave me at the last meeting. Those of you who were not at the October meeting, would you please email or snail mail any corrections to your listing on the present membership list that you find on our DCTRA web site. We want to get this new list as accurate and up to date as possible. Some of you may have noticed in the last print out that the “dues-pd-to” records weren’t quite current. Trudy is matching her records with John Reynolds, Treasurer, to revise the list. Those that are shown to be in arrears and verified with the Treasurer’s records will be contacted to bring those memberships current.

My sister has just celebrated 10 years as a cancer survivor. She is a pretty girl with a beau-tiful personality. I would like to know how many people really read this column. When you see me at the meeting, privately ask me: “How is your sister?” Don’t tell anyone else. This will just be our little secret. If you can’t be at the meeting,

send me a private email ([email protected]).

See you at the meeting on November 8th.

MINUTES: The September 13, 2011 minutes were approved as published in the newsletter.

TREASURER: John Reynolds was not present. Gene Glenn reported on the club’s account bal-ances. $81.79 in expenses for Armand and Ann LaCasse’s pool party were paid out.

MEMBERSHIP: Trudy Crable asked everyone to update their membership information. She hopes to have a current list online soon. Everyone welcomed new members Don & Trish Lockman from Peoria (1977 Spitfire) and Al Elisco who has homes in both Flagstaff and Phoenix.

NEWSLETTER: Dave Riddle was happy with the newsletter articles he received. AAHC: John Horton reported that he had attend-ed the last meeting which was held at Sanderson Ford in Glendale. The November meeting will be held at the museum at the Scottsdale Pavilions. All interested club members are welcome to at-tend.

OWNERSHIP UPDATES: New members Don & Trish Lockman said they had just gotten their 1977 Spitfire six weeks ago.

Jim Bauder has a friend in the Triumph Travel-ers (San Francisco area club) who has a TR3 for sale – call him for more information. EVENTS: Matt Reynolds was not present to report on events. Several members announced upcoming events that club members might be interested in. Check dates and get more informa-tion in the newsletter and on our website: www.dctra.org

TECHNICAL: Armand LaCasse had nothing to report.

John Horton said getting undercoating off the underside of a TR3 is a BEAR! Jim Hughes sug-gested media blasting. Marie Thompson said the Eastwood Company has a solvent that works very well.

Jim Hughes described a clone TR3 temperature gauge he purchased on eBay recently. He was very impressed with the quality and price. He also displayed pictures of progress on the TR3 he bought in 2007, said he started the engine for the first time today and hopes to have it on the road very soon.

OLD BUSINESS: John Horton said that he sent Graham & Angela Stretch, who live on the Isle of Wight, UK, a dash plaque and shirts dating from the 2007 Triumphest. Graham was very help-ful advising on Triumph technical matters during their last visit.

Jim Bauder delivered Gene Glenn’s gold award that he won for his TR4 at Triumphest 2011.

NEW BUSINESS: Jody Kerr reported on a car show he attended back East recently held by a Cape Cod British car cub.

Ron Gurnee recommended CAR CLEANERS DETAILING in Mesa. He said they did a fine job on his car.

Jim Bauder gave away some MAGUIARS TIRE GEL.

TRIUMPHEST 2012 REPORT: George Durkin reported that the registration forms are nearly ready and will be posted to the website soon.

We are still looking for a venue for the autocross event. Stu Lasswell is checking out some po-tential sites but any help would be appreciated. A suggestion to hold both the Funcours and the Autocross on Saturday was discussed and no conclusive decision has yet been reached.

Linda Nicholson displayed some poster-size pic-tures of her car and suggested having a “Gallery of Triumphs” display at the resort. She had infor-mation on getting the posters made at Costco.

With no other business, the meeting adjourned at 7:40 p.m.

OpinionPhotos: Jim Bauder

The short article quoted below, appeared in an issue of the ‘Triumph Sports Owner’s Asso-ciation’ (TSOA) newsletter, exact date unknown, in the early ‘60s. I was a member of the TSOA and kept this article. Along with other clippings from the newsletters, I also have several full is-sues of them, but unfortunately far from a com-plete collection. I was in the Navy at the time and felt that I had limited storage space so I appar-ently kept only what I considered important.

At the time I owned and drove a ’57 TR3A, This car, with its race number 8, can be seen in the collection of early ‘60s race pictures, in a series titled ‘Halls Driver’s School’ on the DCTRA web site. This car was my daily driver and it was equipped with over-drive. This article partly ex-plains my long time infatuation for the Laycock de Normanville electric over-drive!

“OVER WHAT A fried of ours ordered a new Spitfire the other day. Going over the list of options, we came to over-drive. Our friend stopped short. “What’s that?” he asked.

We’re aware that most sports-car own-ers are aware of what an over-drive does, how it works and when to use it. But we discovered that quite a few of the uninitiated haven’t the faintest idea what the unit is all about. Many owners have gotten so used to it’s dependability they just take it for granted. So we asked a couple of Triumph’s technical men to give us a capsule explanation in layman’s language. Basically, Triumph’s Laycock de Normanville over-drive is a means of reducing an engine’s revolutions per minute (RPMs) while maintaining a desired forward speed. In O-D, the RPMs are reduced 25% in the Spitfire and about 22% in the TR’s

The first thing to notice is quieter engine operation. This is due to lower RPMs, which increases engine life. Lower maintenance cost is an added bonus, along with an increase of about

12% in gas mileage.

You can think of over-drive as giving you seven speeds forward. In effect 2+, 3+, and 4+ gears on the TRs. You can use it extensively in traffic, often accomplishing the desired speed by simply going in and out of over-drive without touching the ‘gear change lever’. On the Spitfire and Triumph 2000 sedan, O-D works in 3rd and

Page 9: TRiumph TRumpeter - DCTRATRiumph TRumpeter î Triumphest 2011 ... Triumph 2000/2500/2.5 Register ... that he won for his TR4 at Triumphest 2011. NEW BUSINESS: Jody Kerr reported on

top gears only.

It is not necessary to disengage the clutch when going in or out of over-drive. And of course, it can’t work in first gear or reverse, and second on Spitfires and 2000’s

If you have a friend who’s thinking of buy-ing a Triumph, suggest that he order over-drive installed at the factory. It’s quite a job to have it done later, and costs twice as much. Over-drive is a big plus when you trade in your Triumph for a new one

Now that we are once again into that wonderful time of the year I’m hosting a “Drive-In” Movie Night for DCTRA.

In the past we did this in the parking lot of a friends company and showed the movie up on

the side of the building. This time I’m moving it here to my House.

The movie has not yet been selected - may just make it a surprise. Will it be a newer “contempory flick or an older classic? It will cer-tainly be looking to make it “car” themed.
