I’d like to welcome all of our new families and the entire M-A class of 2018. " Know the location of student bathrooms, lockers, and main thorough-fares.

" Use the premier planner provided to all students, and take Cornell-style notes in class.

" Decide where to eat lunch and whom to eat with during the first few weeks.

" Bring a snack to munch on in the late morning. " Learn how to operate a combination padlock (for hallway and PE lock-

ers).

From the Admin Support Team

For the past ten months, we have called on volunteer parents to help us run a whole slew of events. You have responded with the same generosity of spirit with every event. Whenever we have sent out a call for help, you have signed up unhesitatingly, often exceeding our requests. We are so fortunate to have the most loyal, re-sponsible, and efficient volunteer group anywhere. To those of you who are leaving M-A, thank you for all your contributions year in, year out, and happy times ahead. To those who will be returning next year, we hope you will join forces with our committee again. By signing up and showing up, each of you has made our job easy and made M-A a better place. Thank you, Admin Support volunteers!

From the PTA

As we write this final TriVocis article as PTA co-presidents, we are overwhelmed with gratitude to-ward the many dedicated volunteers who have made our job easier. We owe a huge thank you to our incredible board: Juliana Andersen, Shari Con-rad, Karen Fryling, Pam Howland, Brian LaPorte, Jackie MacDonald, Elena Stallings, and Parke Treadway. We also want to thank the volunteers who have chaired and staffed over twenty-five PTA committees. Whether it’s gathering volunteers to support administrative tasks, getting BearNotes out each Sunday, or running Challenge Day, M-A par-ents consistently step up and help our causes, which in turn helps our students. We leave the PTA in the capable hands of Juliana Andersen and Shari Con-rad, along with Kim Steere, Terri Muschott, Pam Howland, Cecilia Pinto, Parke Treadway, and An-drea Palmer. Please support them as you have us!

The PTA recognizes and thanks volunteers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. The Selection Committee for the PTA Adult Service Awards received many outstanding nominations, and not all nominees could be honored. We are pleased to announce the recognition of the follow-ing dedicated volunteers for the hundreds of hours that they selflessly give to M-A.

Adult volunteers needed next fall at M-A!

Freshman Challenge Day

October 27, 28 and 29, 2014 Challenge Day is coming to M-A for the eleventh year, and we need your help. This freshman event, which kicks off our year-long “Be the Change” program, is sponsored by the M-A PTA with support from the princi-pal, teachers, and administrative staff. The incoming freshman class will participate in this lifetime experience. Our goal is that at the end of the day, students not only will have bonded as a class but also will have torn down old stereotypes and become inspired to live, study, and work in an environment of compassion, acceptance, and respect.

Since 1987, the Challenge Day programs have touched the lives of over half a million teens nationwide. In fact, Challenge Day is the subject of the popular TV series If You Really Knew Me and was featured on the Oprah show, in the book Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul, and in the Emmy Award–winning documentary Teen Files: Surviving High School.

Challenge Day is a powerful, high-energy program in which youth and adult participants are guided through a series of experiential learning activities. The overall goals of the program are to increase personal power and self-esteem; to shift negative peer pressure to positive peer support; and to eliminate the acceptability of teasing, violence, and all forms of oppression. The Challenge Day programs are designed to unite the members of the school and to empower them to carry the themes of the program back to the greater school population. And it works! In the poignant words of a past parent volunteer and small-group facilitator, “I do believe that each time they see each other, it will remind them that they are not alone in their difficulties. I saw repeatedly throughout the day students realizing they are not the only one with various struggles. Then I saw their peers reaching out to assist.”

Adult participation is crucial to the success of these three days. The freshman class will be divided so that one-third attends each day, and we are looking for over 225 adult volunteers to help with this event. You can volun-teer either Monday, October 27, Tuesday, October 28, or Wednesday, October 29. Volunteer positions include small-group facilitators for four to five students (8:15 am to 3:30 pm), registration (8:00 am to 9:15 am), or lunch servers (11:00 am to 1:00 pm). Everyone is welcome, whether you are a parent of a freshman or of an up-perclassman.

As you are making your volunteer plans for the school year, please take the time to consider making a real dif-ference in the lives of our M-A teens in this awesome way. As previous participants, we can promise you that you, too, will walk away a changed individual. To volunteer for any position, please e-mail us at chal l [email protected] , specifying the position and time for which you wish to volunteer.

Thanks to our caring community . . . .  .  . Our 2013–14 efforts have allowed us to reach our goal of $2,000,000, up 12% from last year’s goal!

. . . Over 1,000 donors have participated, with 54% giving more than last year.

. . . Bid 4 Kids online auction raised a record $127,000. You can still join in the fun! Buy tickets to parties and events at www.maauction.org.

If you haven’t made your annual gift, please visit www.mafoundation.org or mail a check to M-A Foundation for the Future, PO Box 1228, Menlo Park, CA 94026.

Our final donor roll will be published in early fall.

The challenge ahead M-A students are counting on the Foundation to provide $2,100,000 for the year 2014–15 to fund essential programs—including smaller classes, more electives, a guidance counselor and the Partnership for Success pro-gram—which would otherwise be eliminated due to cutbacks. We will need the support of every family—veterans and newcomers alike—to meet this critical goal.

A warm welcome, a fond farewell For the 2014–15 year, the Foundation Board welcomes ten new members—George Garrick, Roscoe Jennings, Melissa Jorgensen, Baris Karadogan, Evan Lambka, Grayson Lane, Scott Lohman, Jackie MacDonald, Kim McNerney, Amy Paulsen, and Lauren Schoenthaler—who bring enthusiasm, energy, and a wealth of experience. This crew must fill the shoes of our talented departing members: Lexi Bisbee, Jeanne Connolly, Sara Griffin, Margie Klapper, Marci Coggins, Maggie Heilman, Kim LeMieux, Christie Tonsfeldt, Linda Itskovitz, Artis Montague, Susan Petersen, Paula Rash, and Elizabeth Wood. These dedicated parents have our deepest gratitude for many years of selfless service to M-A.

Watch for our summer newsletter in August. Until then, happy summer and many thanks for your generous support of the students of M-A!

Senior Awards Night

Honoring Outstanding Achievements    The annual M-A Senior Awards Night will be held on Tuesday, June 3, at 7:00 pm in the Performing Arts Center. During this inspirational evening, sponsored by the M-A PTA, many hard-working and talented seniors (and a smaller number of juniors) are honored for outstanding academic and extra-curricular performance as well as service to the school and community. Some of the awards will be a surprise, while many will be recognition for awards already received. Students will be recognized for a wide variety of scholarships, prizes, and commendations awarded by school and community groups. Last year, more than two hundred individuals were recognized.

Invitations will be mailed to families of students who will be receiving recognition. Awards to junior students will be presented early in the program (so juniors can go home to study for finals!), followed by senior awards. Refreshments will be served.

Congratulations to the deserving recipients!

Graphing Calculators at M-A

Graphing calculators are an integral part of math education at M-A. They are used in all classes beginning with algebra II and including AS algebra II, algebra II/trig, precalculus, AP statistics, statistics, and AP calculus AB/BC. Ninth-grade geometry students use scientific calculators in the spring semester, but some stu-dents get graphing calculators instead, knowing they will need them for algebra II. The calculators are allowed on the SAT I test, which is referred to as “calcula-tor neutral” because students may use a calculator if they wish but can solve all problems without one. The other standardized tests—including the SAT math subject test, AP statistics, and AP calculus (AB and BC)—require graphing calcu-lators. They are also allowed on almost all math contests.

The most versatile calculators for M-A math classes are Texas Instruments’ TI-83+ and TI-84 series. All teacher presentations will be made with TI equip-ment. Please do not buy other brands such as Casio and HP. The TI-83+ and TI-84s all perform well, but there are differences in prices and functions. The TI-83+ is what many students purchase. (I would not buy a new or used TI-83.) The TI-84 offers three times the speed of the TI-83+, an improved display, more RAM, and a USB port for students who want to transfer data between their cal-culator and computer. The latest, TI-84 Plus C, has a color screen and is re-chargeable. TI-86s are great, but they do not do statistics and are not recom-

mended. TI-89s will not be allowed on tests/quizzes at M-A.

Prices can vary tremendously depending on the store and the time of year. Calculators will always be considerably cheaper in August and early September, when many stores such as Best Buy and Costco carry them as loss leaders and sometimes sell them at or below cost. The prices can be as much as $30 or $40 less than during the rest of the year. I do not know what prices will be this August, but the TI-83+ can be as cheap as $80 during this brief one-month window. The TI-84s will cost approximate-ly $20 to $30 more than a TI-83+. Some students buy their calculators through eBay, where you can pay as little as $30 for a TI-83+ or $50 for a TI-84.

Math teachers encourage students to check out graphing calculators from the department if they choose not to purchase them. This year over 150 students have been using graphing calculators checked out from the Math Department.

If you buy a TI graphing calculator, please save the TI Technology Rewards symbol, which awards points for TI purchases. We can use these points for earning TI teacher-presentation equipment. Re-turn the points symbol to your son’s or daughter’s math teacher or to me in room D20, or mail it to me at 555 Middlefield Rd, Atherton, CA 94027.

Questions? Send them to [email protected]. Gregg Whitnah, Math Department chair

PSAT Prep All incoming junior year parents, please note: M-A’s Own PSAT/SAT Prep will open in mid-September for juniors to prepare for the October PSAT. Please be aware that the fall PSAT will be in the format that currently exists; the newly an-nounced format will not begin to operate until later. The for-mats of the PSAT and the SAT are identical, except that at pres-ent the SAT has a mandatory essay.

In addition to juniors, for whom the PSAT is designed, we will also accept those few seniors who need to take a late SAT. Sophomores have no need to take the PSAT since good scores are rewarded only when the test is taken in the junior year. Next year’s sophomores who know they will have sports or other after-school activities in the fall of junior year are best served by taking one of our two SAT preps in the spring of their sophomore year.

Prep classes meet on campus for five weeks, Mondays and Tuesdays, 3:30 to 5 pm, ending the week the PSAT is given. Our fee runs from $100 to $225 depending on the number enrolled. The fee includes all materials.

For Q&A, e-mail [email protected]. E-mail is much preferred over the telephone as it gives me a record and it enables me to be more efficient. If you must call, the number is (650) 323-4066.

Places are secured in the order of enrollment, so do not delay guaranteeing your student’s place.

Here’s to great scores for M-A’s juniors!

Jane King, director

Visual and Performing Arts

The Visual and Performing Arts Department thanks the Menlo-Atherton community for your continued support throughout the year. It was another great and successful year with plays, concerts, cabarets, competitions, exhibi-tions—all giving students the opportunity to express themselves creatively. We look forward to more opportunities and creativity next year.

Spring sports highlights

The Bears once again showed their claws during the spring sports seasons. Highlights for the teams (as of mid-May):

" Both the boys’ and girls’ varsity lacrosse teams advanced to their league playoffs following strong league play. The girls’ JV team won the WBAL title, losing only one league match and three games for the season.

" The baseball team began the PAL tourney after finishing third in the PAL Bay Division and were in position to qualify for the CCS.

" The boys’ tennis team won its sixth consecutive PAL Championship and advanced to the CCS semifinals for the first time since 1985, following a 6-1 win over Serra.

" The swim team had a strong showing, with more than twenty swimmers and divers competing in the CCS meet.

" All four track teams won the PAL dual meet title, and many individuals competed in CCS. " Boys’ golf qualified for CCS as a team and had one qualifier for the individual title as well. " The badminton team finished second in the PAL Ocean Division. " The varsity softball team had a much improved winning record and finished in the middle of the

PAL Ocean Division.

These top finishes, combined with strong showing by the fall and winter teams, should earn M-A its seventh Commissioner’s Cup in eight years. Congratulations to all our athletes and coaches for another outstanding year!

Senior athletes recognized

The Spring Sports Awards Night on May 21 honored our senior athletes. Sierra Sheeper was named Femail Athlete of the Year, Oliver Bucka and Zach Plante shared honors as Male Athletes of the Year, and Oliver Bucka was named Three-Sport Athlete.

In addition, more than twenty-five Bears will be continuing their athletic ca-reers as they head to college. Thank you to all the seniors for your leadership and dedication. Go Bears! Libby Beasley and Jill Roumeliotis, Boosters cochairs

9th Annual Big Bear Run Wrap-Up Big Bear hugs to all the fabulous runners, walkers, volunteers, and sponsors who helped make the 9th Annual Big Bear Run on Sun-day, May 4, a huge success! This year there were over 900 registered runners and 730 finishers who came out to support M-A Athlet-ics. The M-A Boosters granted over $120,000 for M-A’s 44 athletic teams this school year, funding critically needed uniforms, basic equipment, and $70,000 in coaching stipends for approximately 850 committed student athletes. Support for the Big Bear Run and M-A Athletic Boosters is a separate and necessary addition to the donations you may have already made to your athlete’s individual sports team. Individual team needs far exceed the amount any team can raise alone. In addition, many of the items funded by the Boosters are shared by several teams. Examples include the athletic trainer and equipment, electronic timing devices, canopies, and our new weight room. Congratulations again this year to the fastest male and female Bears, seniors Zack Plante and Taylor Fortnam. Fortnam won fastest female Bear all four years at M-A! Check out the race results and great Big Bear Run photos on the M-A Athletic Boosters’ Web site (www.m-aboosters.org). Congratulations to the lucky M-A student winners in the end-of-race drawing for an iPad Mini, Beats Head-phones, and various gift cards. Thank you for the contributions of new and gently used shoes, which have been donated to those in need. The race could not have happened without the help of many wonderful volunteers. The Big Bear Run Committee oversaw all the de-tails such as food, logistics, T-shirts, sponsors, publicity, and race planning. Thank you to committee members Kathleen Balestra, Libby Beasley, Alison Blank, Marci Coggins, Beth Henninger, Nancy Kessler, Liz King, Corby Locke, Maryellen McCabe, Nancy McMahon, and Jill Roumeliotis. An additional 75 parents, students and friends came out race day to help with set-up, regis-tration, food and water, course marking, and cheering the runners. Thank you to senior Madeleine Baier for her inspiring singing of “The Star Spangled Banner,” Danny McCabe as the M-A Bear, Alan Perry as our Race Rabbit, Principal Zito for the race start, Michele Culhane for keeping us in our places prior to race start, Mark Culhane as the race commentator, the M-A Dance Team for its great performance, and Mark Balestra for the fun race photos. Thank you to the Atherton and Menlo Park Police Depart-ments for keeping us all safe on the race course. Thank you to Jeff Child and Tom Hayse for marking our revised race course that triumphantly enters the track through the Media Arts Building archway. A big thanks to Brien Oliver and Keith Perkins and their M-A custodial crew for all the heavy lifting in race preparations, set-up, and take-down. Thank you to all the M-A neighbors for ac-commodating our race so graciously! Thank you to Freewheel Brewing Company for the space and equipment we used to prepare our food, Hobee’s California Restaurants for the delicious coffee cake, Bianchini’s Grocery for our fresh fruit, Liz King for guid-ing the design of the beloved Big Bear Run T-shirts, Fleet Feet Sports for our race bibs, and Occasions, etc… for our trophies and medals.

Save the date for the 10th Annual Big Bear Run: Sunday, May 3, 2015.
