Troika is the new asymmetric ‘flatglass’ floodlight from Thorn for250 - 600 Watt discharge lampsusing adjustable lampholders for arange of sports, functional andarchitectural floodlightingapplications.

This unique combination ofperformance and productfeatures make Troika ideallysuited to floodlightingapplications where highperformance must be matchedby effective control of lightpollution, for example, floodlitsports areas, indoor sports halls, swimming pools, airport aprons, docks, car parks, freight yards, and motorway service areas.Applications extend toarchitectural floodlighting whereuplighting and facadeillumination is required.

Whilst the engineering needshave been comprehensivelyaddressed, attention has also been paid to the aestheticsof the product, resulting in asleek housing with a simple style.

Its innovative reflector has beendesigned to optimise floodlightingperformance and the adjustablelampholder offers a variety oflight distributions making Troikasuitable for a wide range ofapplications. At the same time, the light output is finely controlledto minimise light pollution.

The single size body is used with a variety of integral gearoptions, giving a range of 250 to 600 Watts.

Employing the best in materialsand manufacturing technology,Troika also boasts features whichsimplify installation andmaintenance, plus a range of accessories, all combined to givethe best value in ‘flat glass’floodlighting today.

4

The term light pollution is used todescribe a number of adverseeffects which are undesirable by-products of many exteriorlighting applications. To some, light pollution prevents us seeingthe night sky, to others it is theglare from a badly aimedfloodlight. The main componentsof light pollution can be clearlyidentified and positive steps canbe taken to minimise their effects, including the correct selection oflighting equipment and propercontrol of the light output. Suchcontrol must be inherent to thefloodlight if it is to be effective.

Light trespass is the spillageof light beyond a designatedarea into an adjacent area. Atbest it is a waste of light andenergy. (see diagram 1)

It can be eliminated by properoptical design of the reflector sothat the edges of the beam aretightly controlled within therequired area.

Intrusive light or glare is theresult of poor control of lightoutput. The most commonexample is probably from sportslighting, where the intense outputof high power floodlights isvisible to neighbours inside theirown homes. This can causeirritation and disturbed sleep andin extreme cases could be adistraction to passing traffic.

This can be avoided if thefloodlight has a total cut off inthe light distribution near to thehorizontal such that neither thelamp nor the optics are visiblebeyond the designated area.(see diagram 2)

Sky glow describes the effectsof light escaping into the nightsky, which can produce a halo oflight above towns and othersignificant lighting installations. In addition to being visuallyunpleasant this has the effect ofobscuring the night sky.

With floodlights it is caused bytwo components. Firstly the directupward light from a floodlight. This can be eliminated by the useof horizontal ‘flat glass’ designs.Secondly, upward light reflectedfrom the ground. In sportslighting for example, grass canreflect around 10% while someartificial surfaces can reflect asmuch as 20 - 25%. Highillumination levels common tosports floodlighting applicationscan make this reflectedcomponent significant.(see diagram 3)

The solution is to light to thelowest average lighting levelconsistent with proper visibilityfor the sport and to achieve highlevels of uniformity. Floodlightinstallations that give highuniformity with a minimumnumber of floodlights can satisfythis requirement. Inherent in thissolution is the use of floodlightsthat have a peak intensity at ahigh elevation angle, combinedwith a cut off angle below thehorizontal.

Light pollution can be minimisedwith a well designed lightinginstallation if the floodlight offers a:

• precisely controlled light distribution

• peak intensity at a high elevation angle

• total cut off below the horizontal(see diagram 4)

• high levels of illuminance anduniformity

Light is directed across the ground where it is needed

Direct upward light emissions into the night sky are prevented completely

The light emitting surface of the projectorstays parallel with the ground

Designing installations withflat glass floodlights

The designer of a lightinginstallation can achieve hislighting objectives usingtraditional floodlights, free fromthe constraints of light pollutionconsiderations, by rotating thefloodlights from side to side, aswell as tilting them up and down.

However, when using ‘flat glass’floodlights, the lightingperformance must be achievedby using only the side to siderotational adjustment. If this failsto achieve the requiredperformance levels, there are alimited number of optionsavailable in areas where lightpollution is more sensitive:

• Do nothing and sacrifice lighting performance

• Increase the number of floodlights, so increasing installation and running costs, and sky glow from more reflected light

• Tilt the floodlights in the vertical plane, increasing light trespass and glare

• Increase the mounting height, which will lead to higher costs in the columns

6

Troika is an extremely efficient ‘flatglass’ asymmetric floodlight with alight cut-off close to the peakintensity angle.

It also offers a choice of fourdifferent light distributions foreach lamp option. The lightdistributions vary not only in theirdegree of asymmetry, but also intheir intensity and beam width.By mixing and matching the lightdistributions to individualinstallations, the designer canachieve the lighting objectiveswhile still retaining the ‘flat glass’in a horizontal position. (see diagram 1)

Troika’s unique optical system

Troika Variable 60-70 - usesa reflector in conjunction with avariable position lampholder, which provides three differentlight distributions, varying inintensity, beam width and peakangle intensity (Ipeak), from thesame reflector. These floodlightsprovide three different Ipeakangles between nominally 60°and 70°. They are ideal forapplications that requireillumination over a wide area, for instance tennis courts, multi-purpose sports facilities, indoorsports halls, car and lorry parks.(see diagram 2)

Troika Fixed 45 - uses adifferent reflector with a fixedposition lampholder, providing asingle light distribution per lampoption. The Ipeak angles of thesefloodlights is nominally 45° andis ideal for applications where asurface must be illuminated froma source with a degree ofincidence significantly below60°. The best examples areswimming pools and uplightingapplications, where a lower i-peak angle is required to avoidexcessive surface reflectance.(see diagram 3)

Note that the exact Ipeak anglesand distributions of Troikadepend upon the lamp optionselected. Please refer to thephotometric tables detailed onpages 12 and 13.

TROIKA ‘B’: with fixed lamp position; peak intensity angle of approximately 45°. Ideal for illuminating swimming pools.

Technical Information During the development process,as much attention has been paidto the physical design of theproduct as to the photometricdesign. The result is a floodlightthat simplifies and minimisesinstallation and maintenanceprocedures.

Lamp Position SelectionPunchmarks in the reflectoridentify the lamp holder position. The selected position of thelampholder can be checked byseeing which series of marks thelamp support bracket is adjacentto. For example, position 1 hasbeen selected in photograph 1,position 2 in photograph 2 andposition 3 in photograph 3.

To manually adjust the selectedlamp position is simple. Pull outthe brass toggle to release theadjustable fixing bracketallowing the lampholder andlamp support to be repositioned. When the lamp support bracketis adjacent to the desiredposition, release the brass toggle and manoeuvre thelampholder until it clicks andlocks into position.

Gear Tray InstallationTroika has been designed tohouse all control gear integrally. The gear trays are suppliedseparately and designed to ensure simple and rapid installation.

An Electrical Class I Kit can besupplied for installations whichrequire floodlights to be earthed.

Gear Canopy RespiratorThe circulation of air in the geartray can help to prolong the lifeof components and materials.

The integral ‘respirator’ device ofTroika allows air to flow in andout of the gear tray canopy, butwith a filter to prevent dustingress and a ‘chicane’arrangement to keep outmoisture, while maintaining theintegrity of the unit to IP65.

Adjustable StirrupThe adjustable and reversiblestirrup provides a multitude ofmounting options.

Stirrup Aiming GuideAn aiming guide is integratedinto Troika to assist the installerin achieving the ‘flat glass’position.

Stirrup Locking MechanismWhen the exact aiming anglehas been selected, the secondarystirrup locking device ensuresthat the floodlight setting will notbe altered by wind pressure orvibration.

GlassAccess to the lamp is via thehinged front opening glass, requiring only one person formaintenance.

When the glass is closed and thefixing toggles are slid back intoposition and tightened, thegasket between the glass and the floodlight body ensures theIP65 rating.
