Oakland bishop urges President to retain DACA

US ldquois a better place because of themrdquo Bishop Barber said Diocese hosting prayer and information night Sept 6 OAKLAND ndash Bishop Michael C Barber SJ has urged President Donald Trump to keep his promise to protect vulnerable children and youth and allow the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to remain in place echoing the appeal by other Catholic bishops and organizations ldquoThese youth were brought as children to this country by their parents often fleeing violence and oppression in their homeland Their hope was that they would find safety and a chance to live healthy and productive livesrdquo Bishop Barber explained ldquoWe cannot turn them out now Our country is a better place because of them They invoke the spirit of the American dream with great vibrancy and valorrdquo There are approximately 800000 young people who would be impacted by any changes to DACA They are economic contributors veterans of our military academic standouts in our universities and leaders in our parishes and communities ldquoIf the president makes the unwise decision to close DACA I reinstate our commitment to support our Dreamersrdquo Bishop Barber said ldquoWe need you You are part of our familyrdquo The Oakland Diocese will host a prayer service and information evening for those concerned about young people in the DACA program on Sept 6 at The Cathedral of Christ the Light The evening will begin with a rosary at 630 pm followed by Mass at 7 pm Bishop Barber will address the gathering following Mass and resources will be available For more information contact Cristina Hernandez diocesan Coordinator for Life and Justice at 5102678379 or chernandezoakdioceseorg The Diocese of Oakland serves two counties in the East Bay region Alameda and Contra Costa and includes approximately 400000 Catholics in 84 parishes
