Troy Music Department enters the dark

National Honor Society inducts new members

The Troy High School Muscial department took the audience into the dark on the night of May 5. The mood was set with thunder-storms that were be-ginning to roll into the area. The concert was held in the C.W Oliver Gymnasium at 7 p.m. The concert featured the middle school/high school band, the middle school choir, the high-school choir, and Ashley Stock playing the violin. The gym was deco-rated around the theme of “Into the Dark.” The decorations included sound-operated lights

that blinked when the band played and ar-ranged glowstick dis-plays. All of these artistic designs were visible because the gym lights were turned off. The middle school choir sang the song entitled “At Twilight.” As the choir sang, the lights in the gym were simultaniously turned off. “I really thought that this affect contrib-uted to the setting of the sun and how dark-ness dawns on you,” said audience member Mike Pralle. The mid-dle school choir also sang, “100 Years,” and

“Here’s to the Night.” The concert contin-ued with the high school choir singing, “I Will Follow You Into the Dark,” “In Noctem,” and “Counting Stars.” The band closed out the night with several songs that contributed to the darkness theme.

The first song was “Dark Fortress.” This song was also performed by the band at state competi-tion where they received a II or excellent rating. Another song that the band played was the “Night on Bald Mountain.” This piece is usually played by a

larger orchestra, but the band wanted to try something challenging. “I will definitely miss performing in concerts,” said senior band mem-ber Megan Schmille, “I guess in the end I will never forget the memories we made dur-ing our performances.”

NHS is an organiza-tion established to rec-ognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor students who have dem-onstrated excellence in four different charac-teristics: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The sponsor of NHS is Mrs. Jena Tharman. The ceremony started with a welcome from the out-going NHS president Trae Shelton. After the welcome, the 2015-2016 officers were initiated. They are Makayla Ross, presi-dent; Madison Marriott, vice president; Tucker

lar activities, grades, and community service. If their application passed, then they had to inter-view with teachers from Troy High School. Since all four of them had the qualifications to be in NHS, they were able to sign the scroll. Junior Megan Etherton called each new member up to receive a certificate from Mr. Jared Wigger, and then sign the scroll. The ceremony ended with a thank you, given by Lexi Norris on behalf of the entire NHS, to the parents of each NHS member. After the ceremony, everyone who attended was able to enjoy cook-ies and punch. “I am honored to hold

Morris, secretary; and Cailyn Anderson, trea-surer. Then, current NHS members lit the four candles represent-ing the four character-istics of scholarship, leadership, service and character. After each candle was lit, the NHS member who lit it read something about that characteristic. Next, senior Nathan Gaarder introduced the four new members. The new members are Isa-bella Miner, Cheyenne Wigger, Kassidy Ash-worth, and Lane Ether-ton. To be inducted into NHS, each one of the four had to fill out a lengthy application, fo-cusing on extra-curricu-

by Alexis Horner, Trae Shelton the position of president of NHS and I hope we can do some new activi-ties throughout our com-munity,” said incoming president Makayla Ross. The NHS will be work-

ing the annual fun day activities next Wednes-day, May 20. They will also be working at the 4-H Grounds during the Fourth of July activities.

Journalism competitors place at stateby Jennifer Keller

At the State Journal-ism Contest at Kansas University, May 2, eight out of 15 people placed. Jay Whetstine was the only one who took first place out of class 1A/2A. Whetstine won in the yearbook sports writing category. “It was a really cool experience, I enjoyed it, and I wish I would

have done it more than just one year,” said se-nior Jay Whetstine. Sophomore Brit-tany Klaus took sec-ond place in class 1A/2A for the news-paper design category. “It was great to ex-perience. It was fun, but also frustrating. I’m hoping to do it again next year and do just as well or even better,”

said sophomore Klaus. The following students achieved honorable mention: Braden Gross-man and Ben Wardlow for editorial cartoon, Nathan King for year-book copy writing, Ma-dyson Guffy for cutline writing, Kori Bennett for editorial writing, and Bailey Schofield for infographics. Some of the categories

had to be entered before the contest online, and some of them had to be done at KU. The students had to write newspaper articles about school pep rallies, editorials, sports, etc. The publication students took 6th over-all out of class 1A/2A. In February at region-als, everyone that entered something placed in at least one of these events

“I was really pleased with our top two fin-ishers, but I thought with so many qualify-ing for state we might have done better over all,” said Mrs. Martha-Jean Rockey, adviser. The contest is spon-sored each year by the Kansas Scholas-tic Press Association.

Troy High School Class of 2015 left for their senior trip Friday, May 8 at 5 a.m. They flew from the KC airport at 7:30 a.m. and headed to the Houston airport. After arriving in Hous-ton, they were picked up by a bus and imme-diately went to NASA. At NASA, there were two tours that the seniors could take and some students met an actual astronaut, who had been in space four times. There were also people giving airbrush tattoos. After NASA, they went to beach house 31 in Galveston, Texas, which was a two-part house just a block away from the ocean. After unpacking their bags, they spent the rest of the afternoon swimming in the ocean until they went to Walmart to buy fish-ing licenses and break-fast that they cooked for the next three days. Saturday morning, they

all had to wake up really early so Mr. McNor-ton made them omelets. After breakfast, they went to Pier 19 to get on the fishing charter. They went fishing on the Gulf of Mexico for four hours. They had to move three different times due to no one catching fish. Some students caught fish, and Destiny O’ Donnell even caught a bonnethead shark. After they got back from fishing, the se-niors went to the beach. They spent most of the afternoon at the beach and then they headed to the Kemah Board-walk in Kemah, Texas. They were able to ride rides, play carnival games, and go shop-ping at some shops. Sunday morning, they went to the Downtown Aquarium in Houston. Some students got to touch stingrays, while others were able to watch a diver in a huge aquarium full of fish and

a shark. For lunch, they ate at Hard Rock Café, where Abra Rush was given a cup and free des-sert for Mother’s Day. After lunch, they went to Houston’s National Science and History Museum. They took a tour through all kinds of fossils including dino-saurs, leopards, tigers, turtles, and fish. At the museum, they watched a 3D whale movie called “Secret Ocean” by Jean- Michael Cousteau. The next night, they went to Speedy’s Fast Track, where they were able to drive go carts, play laser tag, and play arcade games. Instead of regular-speed go carts, they used super carts which went much faster. They got back to their beach house late and stayed there for the rest of the night. Monday morning they woke up, cleaned their beach house, and packed all their suitcases. Af-ter they packed all their

stuff, they went to Gal-leria, a huge shopping mall in Houston. They spent the rest of their time in Houston until they had to go back to

the Houston Airport. Once at the airport, they had a half hour delay due to the rain. They got back in Troy around 6:45 that night.

“I liked going to the beach, and playing Uno with the students,” said secretary and senior trip chaperone Abra Rush.

“Getting to hangout with my classmates all weekend and not have any arguments,” said senior Valerie Mott.

As my high school journey comes to an end, another exciting journey is about to begin. High school has taught me a lot. No matter how badly you want out, don’t wish it all away. The people I have gotten to know and the situations I have faced have shaped me into the person I am today. I am going to miss walking through the halls of Troy High School and seeing all of my friends. It feels like just yesterday I was a lit-tle freshman, and today I am a graduat-ing senior saying goodbye to what I have known and embarking on a new journey.
