TRANSCRIPT
On Sunday the 8th November, BDA’s cadet troop were marching with the Army Cadets. It was very moving to see Bobbi Bergen, De Andre Dawkins, Travoy Williams, Warren Nunn, Hayley Gerard and Cheyanne
Bristol-George as well as other members of Troop 209 participate in the honorary event.
It was an incredibly proud occasion for the troop who all remained silent and respectful for over an hour,

TROOP 209: A MARCH TO REMEMBER
On Wednesday we were privileged to have Jermaine Jenas an Ex- Professional Football player in to speak to approximately 40 students, which included the Boys’ Achievement students and Sports Colours students.
He spoke of his career as a football player and the struggles he faced in becoming a
player that reached pivotal heights,
eventually representing his country. He also shared stories from his childhood and how he overcame hard times at school.
The speech was inspiring and motivational to all. Hopefully the students can take the words of encouragement and apply themselves better in lessons. Turn to page 3 as we get up, close and personal with the
football star.
From Nottingham Forest to England Footballing Star!
When I first heard of the school introducing the ‘Stage Business’ programme, I wanted to be involved almost instantly. I’ve loved going to the Old Vic anyways, and to gain new leadership skills was going to help me immensely – and personally, I knew it would look really good on my UCAS form for when I go to university. I, along with eight other students, who were also chosen to be a part of the programme, were nervous, excited and we didn’t know what to expect. When I entered the theatre, I saw about 30 other students with the same anxiousness and eagerness we all felt.
Our BDA group were split up into groups of three and then were introduced to the other students – I thought they were fairly local (like we were, seeing the Old Vic is in Waterloo). But some of the nice and equally timid people we met that day came from across the country; some from Swansea and others from Leeds. It was strange and interesting how diverse and large this programme was, and that I was a part of that shared experience.
Throughout the day, I was learning brand new skills from professional writers, performers and directors; whether that was how to be prepared for the movements on the stage or how to adapt a scene to make it unique. My personal favourite workshop was led by a writer named Kenny, who taught us the useful techniques of story-telling and writing our own stories. I found this incredibly fascinating and since I am an English student,
it became really useful and informative for my own studies.
But most importantly, the end of the day saw our BDA group discussing, constructing and presenting our pitches on how to become good leaders – in particular on how to be great communicators. The Old Vic allowed us to gain inspiration from prominent figures and images to guide us, and this in itself I felt helped us tremendously. I already feel as though my leadership skills and my confidence have improved and by April, I would have had become a much better leader than I was before the programme. I am enjoying the programme and it is very exciting that soon we will go back to Waterloo and continue the experience.

women in the media facing some of
the gender stereotypes we have in

about some of the things that I think is
more sensitive”.

BDA SPORTS
Four BDA players took part last Saturday and Sunday in the 4 Stars Table Tennis Tournament at Cippenham Table Tennis Centre in Slough. NB: The 4 Stars tournaments are regarded as the highest ranking tournaments comparable to the National Championships finals.
Yassmine Al-Amrie was the BDA star of the weekend, beating England’s number 5 cadet - Tiana Dennison 3-2! This was definitely a highlight of the tournament,
Cacherel Mirjah-Mercer performed really well in the cadets’ competition, losing only in the quarter finals 0-3 with the eventual
winner of the tournament.
Israel Awolaja played in the very strong Junior competition but unfortunately, lost out in the last 16.
Robel Berhanykun really good win against a player better ranked than himself. Robel is quit new to the 4 Stars tournaments so we are sure that we will hear more from his performances.
Please also note that 4 players out of the 10 Greenhouse players that participated in the tournament were from BDA.

We are firmly back in the habit after half-term now, all the lessons are getting really productive and we have some great students reading some really challenging books! Particularly well done to Nuura Ali and Leah Strong from 8A for finishing Smart by Kim Slater after Mr. Crowley set up a competition you both did amazingly!!!
If you would like to support your year 7 child in reading and quiz taking you can come and view a lesson on Tuesday November 17th, it would be lovely to see as many parents as possible coming to join in!
Just another reminder that the library clubs are still going and we would love to loads of you there:
• Manga Club on Monday (for year 7) and Wednesday (for everyone) after school,
• Craft Club on Thursdays after school,
• Games Club on Friday after school,
• 6th Form Book Club Friday lunch time.
Lifters by Joe Craig
Adaq and his sister, Maya are an expert team of pickpockets, but Adaq is starting to have doubts about the way they live. When his sister convinces him to lift one last wallet it leads to some unbelievable consequences. After witnessing a murder
and being chased by police Adaq realizes he has been unknowingly drawn into a major crime! Will he make it out unharmed?
This book was so exciting! I couldn’t put it down. From the very first page there is non-stop action and you really fear for Adaq’s life at times! It has a very mysterious ending and this means you can make up your own mind what happens to all of the characters. I’d love to hear what you guys think happened!
