2250 Royal Canadian Army Cadets – Bracebridge, Ontario
TROOP SCOOP
For as long as I can remember, the Autumn has been my favourite season. The weather is cooler and changing Fall colours beckon us to get outside on the land and enjoy nature in all its glory. Fall also signals the start of the school/Cadet training year and new beginnings for all of us.
Speaking of new beginnings, at last year’s Annual Inspection, I spoke about a number of changes we were making to the program to enhance your Cadet experience. Our new logo is now available as a decal and has been used on our recruiting posters and our PT T‐shirt. I believe that the use of the logo has given the Muskoka Pioneers more recognition in the community and helped attract the many keen new recruits we enrolled this year. Stay tuned for more use of this logo. Other changes that we will be making include a major update to our website that will feature a chat/blog area for Cadets.
This fall we also completed our first Senior Leaders canoe trip. Aside from navigational and other bush craft skills, the seniors got a chance to get out on the water in Massassauga Provincial Park, which offers a different landscape than what we typically see in Muskoka. I’ll never forget standing around the campfire and listening to all the Cadets laughing while playing our memory game….”One fat hen and a couple of ducks”.

To me, that’s what Cadets is all about, making friends, sharing memories and striving to be your best. Speaking of being the best, the community feedback on our Remembrance Day Vigil was awesome!
The future of 2250 The Muskoka Pioneers is bright. I am proud to be the commanding officer of this unit. My hope is that the Cadets of 2250 are proud of who they are, and are not afraid to share their Cadet experiences with their friends, family and schoolmates.

Support Committee News
2250 Royal Canadian Army Cadets is sponsored by a Support Committee comprised of a dedicated group who volunteer their time for the benefit of the Cadets. The Committee is consistently working on a number of fund-raising initiatives to provide the Cadets with the resources needed for a full and fun year of activities. How do you help? They operate the canteen during training nights and organize the annual parade, tag days and other fundraising events. They also coordinate Cadet involvement in community events such as the Royal Canadian Legion poppy campaign. They meet monthly to discuss ongoing initiatives, and volunteer their time and skills in many other ways. Your help is always needed, no matter how much time you can give, and even if you think you have no skills to contribute. If you are interested in helping out with the Support Committee, please contact the Committee Chairperson, Laura Pepper at (705) 732-1772 or email her at: [email protected]

“To me, that’s what Cadets is all about, making friends, sharing memories and striving to be your best.”-Captain Hammond
I was asked to write about the Canoe Trip that I was a part of with the Senior Cadets on Sept. 24th, 2010.
When asked to be a part of the trip, I said yes thinking that I would have no problem; as I love camping, the outdoors, and I am a volunteer firefighter so nothing that the Cadets do should be too hard….(right?).
First of all I packed way too much stuff. When we unloaded our gear, and I looked around, all of the Cadets had very light weight bags, maybe 40 lbs. max. When I lifted up mine, it weighed about 85 lbs. I will never tell my son (Corporal Marsh) that he has to pack 5 pairs of socks on his next expedition; I now have no problem with him taking one pair and turning them inside out if necessary. Secondly, when morning call came, I was very surprised when in 5 minutes, all of the Cadets were awake, dressed, and their tents dismantled, packed away, and were sitting by the mess area with their rations already cooking. I still wasn’t even changed out of my P.J’s. Cadets are much disciplined in carrying out tasks fast and efficient.
I enjoyed the time with the Cadets; I was very impressed with their ability and knowledge of their tasks at hand. The navigation skills they displayed all along the canoe trip were very impressive, not to mention their leadership skills in taking orders and carrying out those orders with professionalism. We covered a lot of water with those canoes and I had a lot of help with the support of the Cadets to see it to the end. The word.......... “IRENE”….. “IRENE”……….. I still do not understand the meaning behind it, but it sure helped yelling it out of the canoe as we paddled for what seemed to be hours at a time. I did sneak in a little fishing which I love to do, and I appreciated the team work of Master Corporal Pepper in paddling up the slack…
To the left is a picture of a small version of the map that we used to chart our way from the Three Legged Lake Access Point to Spider Lake. The scenery was beautiful and I think we saw a snake on the shore when we were paddling by, but Captain Hammond said it was a pine cone. When we were all standing around the fire on Saturday night and Captain Hammond suggested a game to play… the night was filled with laughter and awe… as we had to test our memory on a game that was very challenging and
funny to play… “One fat hen, a couple of ducks, three brown bears…”I think I made it to five before I was eliminated.
On the paddle to home land, I was very excited to return to civilization, and was asked several times to slow down my paddling as we kept swerving and going in circles, which I can laugh about now and for years to come. The Cadet program offers wonderful adventures and training that I wish I had when I was young, and hope that this continues. I will remember and treasure this trip forever and I see why Cadets are very fortunate to have great leaders to guide and teach them to be the best that they can be.
If asked to participate in another expedition such as this…… ah… I would have to really think about it.
