President’s Message

3

By Barbara DeGrawWhat a pleasant gathering in Julian last week as we recognized our membership with a day of fun. Charter Chapter members and very new members shared in outdoor activities. Steve Raney’s trained dogs are always the envy of every dog owner. We never tire of watching the running and splashing water retrieves as well as the discipline shown in upland retrieves. Tomahawk and knife throwing proved to be a highlight of the afternoon. Winners showed off their medals to the bystanders while the losers moved to the refreshments. Downing the archery targets proved tricky for most of us, however, the food and drink kept us all in good spirits.

Having just returned from the August National Board Meeting of SCI in Tucson, I am reminded, as members of SCI we become part of a strong worldwide hunting family. Members of SCI are indeed fortunate to be represented by the high level of professionalism displayed, in particular, by the members and staff of

SCI’s Government Affairs Committee and Legal Task Force. On a daily basis they work tirelessly, representing us on many fronts across our country, to defend our rights as hunters.

The SCI Foundations recently announced that SCIF contributed $330,000 to worldwide wildlife conservation projects in the final quarter of the last fiscal year. Living in such a global society it is imperative we have representation at both the national and international levels. It is our job at the chapter level to be supportive of the work of SCI and network with other chapters on concerns that may ultimately spread beyond our area. It is then our job as individuals to stay informed on local issues and when appropriate, promote our position to be “First for Hunters.”

Good luck where ever the fall hunting season finds you. We look forward to reports on those hunts.

Membership ReportBy Dennis Kerr, Membership ChairEach of us joined SCI and the San Diego Chapter for various and often different reasons. I joined after attending my first Auction and having a wonderful time, collecting some great bargains and meeting some very nice people. Soon after I became aware of SCI’s mission and goal of preserving hunting, and conserving wildlife and habitat and it dawned on me that Safari Club was more than just a good time with fun people.

Though each of us has joined for diverse reasons we all espouse SCI goals. The most tangible thing that each of us can do to support those goals is increase and maintain the number of members in our Chapter. If you know a hunter or outdoors person who is not a member, ask them to join. Our Annual Auction is a great opportunity to increase membership.

Another aspect of membership is retention. This translates into …“pay your dues.” If you are a hunter, SCI is the preeminent organization that represents your interests worldwide and is deserving of your continued support. You should have received or will receive a membership statement from SCI in Tucson. You can either send them a check, pay online at www.safariclub.org, or pay on the Chapter’s website at www.sandiegosci.org where you may use PayPal. When you renew you make a significant contribution to hunting and conservation.

Big Bore Boys Shoot — Fun in the Sun

4

By Hubert von der BeeckOn Sunday, July 31st, was another one of our semi-annual “BIG BORE BOYS SHOOTING” events for SCI-San Diego members at Project 2000 Rifle Range in El Cajon CA. Surprisingly, we were not only “boys” but had two ladies participating who knew how to handle a gun well - Ruth Hanson and Laura-Beth Buck. Ruth is going to British Columbia in September for sheep, goat, and moose and Laura is going on a South African buffalo hunt in three weeks time. Both wanted to practice a little more realistically before going on their trips. Due to some last minute cancellations, we were only 13 shooters plus family members, friends and on-lookers. Some regulars like Paul Scripps, Chris Crane, Josh Zigman, Keith Johnson, Pete Traphagen, Dr. Neuman, etc., could not make it. The upside of this low participation number was that everybody was able to shoot more. Each shooter went through three buffalo charges, two crossing boars runs, and two standing targets which gave everybody a chance to test his/her gun handling and shooting skills. There was a slight change with the charging buffalo target at this time.

We had built a cover (4 - 55 gal plastic drums) as an “African bush” behind which the shooter - with gun below waistline - was positioned so that he/she could not see the buff. On the command “charging buffalo” he/she had to step into the open, turn towards the oncoming buff, bring the gun to the shoulder, acquire the target, and then try to put a

bullet or two into the brain of the buff in order to stop it. This little “twist” made the whole thing more realistic, difficult, and rushing. The end result was that only one shooter, Jeff Buck, managed to get in a perfect brain shot. All other shooters would have been gored in a real-life charge. We also had a changed running boar situation because the range had lent out the wire device that we had used during previous events. To solve the problem, we just turned the charging

buff rails sideways, put a boar target on it, fastened a 5” balloon over the heart of the beast, and then had the sled running from right to left. Worked fine, and made it a difficult to hit, too. This was evident by the fact that only two shooters, Laura-Beth Buck and Jamie Mendoza, were able to pop the balloon with a clean heart shot. Jamie also served as our range officer to make sure that all of the shooting was done safely and efficiently. Thanks, Jamie! Afterwards celebration with beer, wine and food in the clubhouse courtesy of Barbara & Andy DeGraw. Their cured ham served with salad, potatoes, dessert and other goodies was delicious. Thanks to Pat Hermsen who provided different types of beer directly from the Ballast Point Brewing Co. as welcomed refreshments after 5 hours of “fun in the sun” at Project 2000.

Special thanks belong to Hermann Sledge, who has designed and built this rolling target machine and to his helpers, Tim Hanson and Rick Brookshire, who worked tirelessly throughout the afternoon to keep us shooting. The rest of the shooters were John Bahr, Brian Fletcher, John Littrell, David Maurer, Thomas Schiff and Hubert von der Beeck. This event is a great way to practice shooting under simulated but almost real hunting conditions. It is different from the bench shooting we all normally do to get ready for an upcoming hunt. Come and join us at the next “BIG BORE BOYS SHOOTING” event for a good time with hot guns, cool drinks and delicious food.

Pride – Hunter Safety Class

San Diego Chapter Legislative IssuesBy Jim Conrad, Legislative ChairmanAs your new San Diego SCI Legislative Chair, I’d like to introduce myself and give you a heads-up on my plans to keep you informed on important hunting and angling related legislative issues.

First of all, you’ll notice that the Legislative Update page of the chapter website at www.sandiegosci.org will continue to provide you with the recent news on federal, state and international political and conservation events. There is also a new Political Action page that provides links to a variety of other Websites that are widely recognized as leading sources for the very latest news on what’s happening in Sacramento and Washington DC that could affect hunting and angling.

Additionally, on rare occasion, you may be receiving e-mail “Call to Action” alerts regarding matters that are deemed to be of immediate and critical importance to the membership. I promise to keep these “Call to Action” alerts to an absolute minimum, so that you know that if and when you should receive one that this is indeed a matter of critical importance and that it requires your immediate attention and, hopefully, appropriate action.

By John Ehlers, Trophy Times EditorMike Barry and John Ehlers taught Hunter Safety at the Green Head Club August 6th and 7th. Twenty-nine new hunters took the class, passed the test, and received their Hunter Education cards. Congratulations to all the students who worked hard to get their cards. Wilt Williams and Ron Wade helped out with the cooking and shooting. Thanks guys! The Robertson family scored two 100’s, a 99, and a 97. They hold the record for highest family scores.

www.sandiegosci.org

Dear Chapter Members and Friends:

The San Diego Chapter of Safari Club International will present our annual Auction on February 18, 2012 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Our theme, Auction 2012: GO WILD! celebrates our commitment to promoting and protecting our hunting, fishing, and outdoor legacy. Don’t miss this outstanding event, which is one of the most popular fundraising events held on the West Coast. It always proves to be a grand and memorable evening with irresistible auction items, good food and great company. It also provides an opportunity to meet outfitters and merchants who cater to hunting and the outdoor sports. For the first time, we have invited many national hunting and fishing organizations to be both exhibitors and guests, which should add to the excitement of our event. Proceeds from the Auction provide the Chapter with funds to support conservation programs, educational opportunities and other worthwhile activities that sustain sportsman’s rights. We provide our local Wounded Warriors with days in the field, hunter safety courses through our Pride Program, and sponsorships for the American Wilderness Leadership Schools (AWLS). We also sponsor annual shooting events, support youth hunting and outdoor opportunities as well as worthwhile conservation projects. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE THIS EVENT SUCCESSFUL! Here are some suggestions as to how you can help. If you have taken an especially good hunting, fishing or outdoor trip you can contact the outfitter, explain the benefits of donating (see next paragraph) and ask them if they would consider a donation. If they are open to the idea, send them a form and notify Peter Traphagen, the Hunts/Trips chair and he will follow up with your outfitter. If you know a friend, business or associate that would have a quality item that you would like to have offered at the Auction please contact them and provide them with the appropriate form, either Hunts/Trips or the General Donation form. Explain to them the benefits of donating; tax deductible, exposure to sportsmen and women through our website, newsletter and Auction Program, and of course at the event. If you have an item or trip you would like to donate please complete the appropriate donation form and send it to Peter Traphagen for Hunts/Trips or Terry Wade for General Donations. In the past we have had donations of trips to vacation homes, rafting trips, Resort Hotel Rooms in Key Largo FL as well as merchandise and other quality items such as: jewelry, furs, paintings, bronze sculptures, optics and firearms. We will accept cash as well. Donation forms are available. Feel free to make copies for multiple donations and for others, who would like to support our commitment to preserving and protecting our legacy of hunting, conservation, education and humanitarian projects. If you have any questions contact one of the committee members below. Thank you in advance for helping make this a great event. See you on February 18, 2012, for the celebration of Auction 2012: GO WILD! San Diego Chapter, SCI is a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit organization. Therefore, contributions to the organization could be tax deductible. Please see your tax professional regarding the tax benefits of your donation.
