• Applications of Advanced Feature Track Winds• Tropical Cyclone Intensity Monitoring using the
HES– Estimates of HES resolution requirements using
GOES-8 imager data
• Implications of improved thermodynamic measurements
Estimation of HES Horizontal Resolution Requirements Using GOES-8 Imagery
• Analyze IR brightness temperatures from recent intense Atlantic hurricanes
• Degrade resolution from 4 to 8, 16, 32, 48 km• Determine impact on eye temperature• Surface pressure estimate from HES would require
eye temperature down to ~500 hPa (~0 oC)• Result: HES resolution of 4 km is highly preferred
over 10 km resolution for TC analysis– Similar analysis with MODIS data underway to
eliminate possible diffraction effects on the results
Impact of Horizontal Resolution on GOES-8 Brightness Temperature in the TC Eye (4 km resolution required for some storms)
Hurricane Mitch with 4, 8, 16, 32 km Resolution (GOES-8 Channel 4)
Eye temp vs horizontal resolutionfor 7 recent major hurricanes
