Flatonhisbellyinthemainair-conditioningductdirectlyabovethem,SamPeltonaimedhisSigSauerbetweenthesoldier'sexpressionlesseyes.Thestate-of-the-art,multi-milliondollaroperatingroomwouldn'thavebeenunusualifithadbeeninalargehospitalinamajorcityanywhereintheworld.ButthisORwassmackinthemiddleofthejunglesofCentralAfrica.

"ObviouslyIwasbroughtallthiswayforareason,"Bethwassayingalittledesperately."Justtellmewhy.There'snoneedtothreatenmewiththescalpel."Whenshegotnothingmorethanablankstare,shedraggedinadeepbreath,heldit,thenletitoutslowly."Who'sincharge?You?"sheaskedtheguywiththeblade.

Twomoreuniformswerestationedatthedoor.Aseventhman,presumablytheanesthesiologist,stoodhunch-shoulderedandmuteattheheadoftheoperatingtable,clearlytryingtomakehimselfasunobtrusiveaspossible.

Wasn'tgoingtosavehissorryass.Samwasready,willing,andfreakingabletoblowtheplacetosmithereensatthefirstopportunity.OncehehadBeth.Onceshewassafe.Droppingdownnow,gunsblazing,whilepersonallysatisfying,mightgetherkilled.Thatwasariskhewasn'twillingtotake.

Godforbid,Thadiwehimself?Chillsofpureterrorchasedoverherskinmakingthefinehairsonherarmsandthebackofherneckstandup.

Shehadn'tmeanttofallsleep,buthalfanhouraftershe'dcometotheroom,thelightshadsuddenlygoneout.She'dfoughtexhaustionandlost.
