We have a winner! after a year of searching, south australia’s inaugural Fashion at the Races title has been won – by a Queenslander! Brisbane local

amy Robson arrived in adelaide on centrebet sa Derby Day (saturday, May 5) to rendezvous with her Perth-based father. That’s when a family day at The Races

quickly turned into to one of the most memorable days of her life. amy entered the last Fashion at The Races qualifying heat in the final hour and was chosen as the sa Derby Day Finalist, securing her a place in the afternoon’s state Final. hours

later, she had won the keys to a Volkswagen Polo!

up against 14 other Finalists, amy’s autumn-inspired outfit (pictured above front left, made by her grandmother) received a unanimous tick from the judging panel. close behind her was Kangaroo island cup Finalist, alex hecker, whose on-trend

navy and camel ensemble won her a $3000 Liza EmanuELE shopping experience as Runner-up. also recognised was Mount Gambier Finalist Tahlia

Gabrielli, whose qualifying outfit won her the adelaidenow People’s choice award following an online voting poll in the two weeks prior to sa Derby Day. across the board, the finalists stepped it up a gear. not only did they beat over 800 entrants

throughout the year to make it to the Final, they put sa racing fashion on the map, taking the standard of racewear to a national level and attracting racegoers from

Wednesday, august 1 is the day to crack open the champagne. Why, you ask? This is the day that every

horse in australia celebrates its birthday. strangely enough, all thoroughbreds have the same birthday so their ages can

be standardised for comparison due to the historical lack of records of actual birth days. in the northern hemisphere

this is January 1 and in the southern hemisphere it’s on august 1. This means that after the first time a horse is alive on august 1 it is considered a yearling. The next

august 1 therefore counts as its 2nd birthday, even though it could conceivably be one year one day old. Technicalities

aside, we love any excuse to throw a party!

ocated six hours north of Adelaide, quite literally in the middle of nowhere, Roxby was built in 1987 to service the giant Olympic

Dam Copper Uranium Mine. And with industry came an influx of workers - some temporary, others who settled permanently.

President of the Roxby Downs Racing club, stuart cormack, moved to the area in 1992. Back then Roxby was home to just 2500 people, but as even the tiniest of sa communities have proven, a rural town is nothing without a racecourse.

in the early 1990s a course as rugged as the outback surrounding it was constructed, but it functioned only as a gymkhana club until the first registered race in 1994.

coincidentally, stuart cormack’s horse acrobat won that race. at the time stuart was a young storeman out at the mine with horse shares in adelaide.

“i was new to the town when the club was being formed so i went under the radar. i was a part owner of acrobat and it won the first registered race. when it backed up the next year for a second place, the club realised my interest and nominated me on the committee in 1995. i’ve been there 17 years without a break,” he said.

To younger south australians, Roxby downs is as much a part of our state’s fabric as port lincoln or murray Bridge, but anyone born before the 1980s will know it hasn’t always been that way. Just 25-years ago the Roxby we know today did not exist.

he’s also been the club President for 11 of those years and has witnessed the growth of both the town and the sport.

“when we first started out the residential population was at least 50 percent of what it is now. we had small crowds,” stuart said.

“as the town’s gotten bigger, more companies have come, and more people, so our crowds have sky rocketed. in the 1990s we’d have around 400 to 800 and now we consistently get 2000 to cup Day.”

held annually in august (this year saturday, august 4), the Roxby Downs outback cup is unique for several reasons - the most obvious being the red dirt track.

“it’s very red!” stuart said.

“it’s hard to prepare the track because the sand gets blown off.

“we have to re-sand it every year. it doesn’t take much rain up here to wash it away. That’s the biggest challenge.”

Despite its remoteness, the Roxby cup is also one of the most popular destination race meetings in sa. and according to stuart, we have the mine workers to thank. he believes camaraderie among the miners and the town’s isolation has created a laid back community atmosphere in Roxby that has made cup Day a favourite among racegoers.

“we’re a mining town, not a farming community. it’s not prim and proper, it’s a mining town race meeting,” he said.

“we have mine workers and those returning to the district once a year who make a weekend of it, which is a massive spend for the town. it’s a real celebration. we start with the annual calcutta on the Friday and on cup Day everyone is involved. we have the local scouts and footy clubs helping us out.”

But after two decades living in Roxby, stuart has observed that it’s not just the original miners, but their children and the next generation of workers enjoying the races.

“it’s great to watch events like Fashions on the Field because you see the youth that’s blossomed in our crowd,” he said.

“There is quite a turnover of young people, but there’s also the second generation of permanent residents who are now of working age - they’re all at the races having a good time. They’ll be the ones who take over the club.”

not that stuart’s ready to stop. For him, the love of racing isn’t just the sport itself.

“i like the industry - the enjoyment for punters and the people who just like a day out,” he said.

“without sounding corny, the remote communities that have a big race day, it just adds so much to the community. it goes a long way for people to enjoy living in that area. it feels good to be involved in organising something like that.”

1. “start with the basics. chair covers, linen cloths and simple table decorations are the simplest ways to make your marquee look upmarket.”

2. “Put some thought into catering. Many of the package marquees at Balaklava provide breakfast on arrival as most people get there at 10.30am. it’s always a nice touch to be greeted with a bacon and egg muffin or a croissant and a glass of champagne. Breakfast is also quite unique to the races.”

3. “choose a theme and match it to the event. corporate signage is becoming very popular on the front of the marquees as it is a great way to advertise your company and set the theme. Printed flags, hats and gift bags are other good ways to incorporate a theme. attention to detail is what will make your event stand out from the others - your guests will appreciate the extra effort.”

4. “use colour - i prefer black and bright colours as white can sometimes look like a wedding. Flowers are perfect for this.”

5. “Make it comfortable. it’s nice to have areas set aside with ottomans and cube furniture so people can relax and talk. also, the table decorations need to be small, especially if it’s a sit down meal so people can see across the table.”

TAKE THE nO-fUSS OPTIOn:For a hassle free day at Balaklava, some racegoers might prefer to wine and dine in the large corporate marquees that cater for between 200 and 600 people. Kerry says there are plenty of options for groups of all ages.

“There are quite a few packages that do sit down and buffet style meals so you can choose one to suit the atmosphere you’re after. For the young crowd there’s the colts & Fillies marquee which is situated in the middle of the track this year. The cocktail club and Belldale Ball are other options for the young ones to party trackside. some of the local bars in adelaide also have their own marquees and they organise the whole day for their customers. This year we have a new bar that has joined us - the Marina sunset Bar at Glenelg will have its own DJ and transport, with food and drinks also included in the package.”

he dust has barely settled at Morphettville after the inaugural fashion at The Races State final on

Centrebet SA Derby, and already a new season is alive and kicking. Leading the charge are racegoers from the South East. On Sunday May 6, Brigette Cox became the first Limestone Coast Semi-finalist at the Scott Group of Companies Millicent Cup, and on friday May 18, Elizabeth Gunn was crowned as the first fashion at The Races automatic qualifier at the Scott Group of Companies Mount Gambier Gold Cup.

Back at FaTR headquarters, preparations are in full swing for an even bigger season. saFM’s hayley Pearson has been named as this year’s Fashion at The Races ambassador and the major prizes have just been announced. The winner of the 2012/2013 Fashion at The Races title - to be held on south australian oaks Day at Morphettville Racecourse next year - will drive away in a Mini Ray, while the Runner-up will receive a $3000 wardrobe from new fashion partner Perri cutten. in total, 15 Finalists will be selected from 26 race meetings throughout the year. we hope to see you there!

ntroducing Hayley Pearson, our new fashion at The Races Ambassador for 2012/2013. Often touted as one of Adelaide’s best-dressed

celebrities and a natural public speaker, SA-born Hayley was a shoe-in for the role.

hayley first established a career on radio in adelaide before moving interstate to host programs in Queensland and Melbourne. in 2010 she returned home to host saFMs top rating breakfast show ‘hayley, craig and Rabbit’. now mum to 7-month old austin, hayley is also a regular correspondent on channel Ten’s ‘The Project’ and has fond memories of dressing for the races.

“Growing up in adelaide, i have so many great memories of the oakbank Races, all of which involve fashion!

“i absolutely love fashion and have always thought that dressing for the races is unlike any other event. i’m really looking forward to checking out some of sa’s most fashionable men and women at different racing events. i think south australian racegoers are so much more stylish and fabulous than all the other states!”

“i attended the first Fashion at The Races Final on sa Derby Day in May and was blown away by the outfits. i can’t wait to see what sa can produce this year.”

WHAT’S yOUR BEST RACInG fASHIOn TIP?

“To me, the races are all about class and style with (of course) a touch of personality. i’ve heard that velvet and felt are big this winter and so i’ll be looking out for this season’s trends over the coming months. The number one rule i learned growing up was: Girls, we can’t show leg and cleavage. it’s one or the other! i need to remember that, too, when dressing for my first racing carnival in september.”
