Auto industry analysis website TrueCar, Inc., offers car buyers a simple promise: by visiting TrueCar.com, you will find better information on what people in your area have been paying for cars than you would on your own. TrueCar leverages its access to information on car sales and industry trends to compile a range of statistics with the goal of helping car buyers find the best deals.

In May 2013, the site reported that ratings for its TrueMPG measure of fuel efficiency had leveled and were showing a year-over-year gain of 0.4 miles per gallon. One of the company’s analysts explained that high fuel prices were pushing consumers toward purchasing models with better gas mileage and that even larger, less-efficient models were showing improvements.

TrueCar’s report also broke down gas mileage numbers by manufacturer and region. U.S. manufacturers trailed their counterparts in Europe and Japan in average fuel mileage ratings, while cars from South Korean manufacturers boasted the highest average TrueMPG, at 27.3 miles per gallon. TrueCar calculates TrueMPG by using the mileage ratings applied to each vehicle by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and weighting them by monthly sales.
