HELEN WRIGHT (UK)

I spent my holiday in Canada at my friend Tony’s place. He lives in a house on the beach at Lake Huron. Because I was in Canada, I expected to see a lot of wild animals. And I had one special wish. “I would like to see a bear,” I said to Tony. “Then we will go to the Rockies!” he replied. We bought the flight tickets and flew to Calgary. Then we hired1 a car and drove to the mountains. We spent a wonderful week in a chalet2 in the mountains. The landscape was beautiful, and we saw elk3 in the forest, salmon4 in the rivers and other fish in the lakes. Even a cheeky chipmunk5 came to us for food. But no bears!

We returned home to Lake Huron. We were tired after the long flight and soon fell asleep. But in the middle of the night we suddenly woke up. “What was that?” I asked Tony. I thought it was a burglar. “Did you hear that strange noise? Is anybody outside the house?” I took a big flashlight6 and Tony picked up his gun. We went out onto the bedroom balcony. I couldn’t believe my eyes! A big brown bear was looking for food in our waste bin7! I was shocked and shouted, “A bear!

Lake Huron is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. It’s the second largest, after the Lake Superior. Its surface is 59,590 km² (The Czech Republic is 78,866 km².)

A bear!” Actually, the bear was in shock, too. When it saw us, it ran away into the woods.

Tony said, “We’re lucky we didn’t meet it closer!” I went to sleep excited, thinking, “This was not a dream! I have seen a bear!”

Next day, in the local newspaper, we read, “A dangerous bear is going round our town!” Luckily, we never saw it again.
