Principal’s
Message
Another busy week at this outstanding public school.
On Tuesday, Basketball sessions continue, Self-defence
for years 5-10 Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, 9/10/11
Visual Design excursion to Orange Thursday,
Secondary street stall, Primary assembly and
MONSTER clothing giveaway Friday.
I have been very impressed with the skill and
professionalism of Miss Rona Jackson when coaching
sport. All sessions have been well planned, safe and
have been targeted to various skill levels. I understand
Rona is planning holiday sport coaching clinics. I hope
these are well supported because anything that
increases the opportunity for children in this town and
helps a local coach display their skills, should be
supported. I believe the theme park and movie theatre
are closed for renovations so these clinics will provide
a realistic alternative until these attractions re-open.
The Self-defence classes have been made possible
through a partnership between the school and the
P&C. These sessions are not designed to create
superheros but to allow your children to develop a
few strategies to survive a violent situation. Trundle
Central School is an oasis of civility but we are not
educating students for Trundle but the world. Many
people may wonder how self-defence classes fit into
the curriculum. It is simple, quality schools such as
ours take seriously our duty of care to students. A
student asked me last week if I have ever had a
physical fight. The answer is yes and I won my last one
by a colour bond fence and 100 metres. Most people
will have situations where they need to defend
themselves, a friend or family member. However, I
firmly believe civilised humans lower themselves to the
status of an animal if they attack another.
Unfortunately, some of our students may come up
against one of these animals, so a few strategies are
not a weight to carry.
The clothing give away has been made possible
through the school being proactive and seeking the
support of various organisations. Clothing is incredibly
expensive, therefore I encourage people to take
advantage of this opportunity for free quality clothing.
A gold coin donation would be appreciated but not
compulsory. This is not charity but the embracing of
opportunity and a fund raiser for your school. The
clothing will be available for inspection from 11:30am
on Friday this week.
The school through a partnership with Thread
Together has secured numerous pairs of quality shoes.
On the school Facebook page is a picture of the shoes.
These shoes can be inspected at the school and can be
purchased for a small donation to our bus fund. In
many cases the donation sought is less than 10 percent
of the retail value of the shoes. This is an opportunity
to purchase new shoes at a fraction of the retail price
and help the Trundle community and your school.
Primary Assembly is the culmination of a very hard
terms work. I have been very impressed with the way
all students have settled into positive work habits. Our
students are building the strong foundations needed
for future success. On Tuesday last week, I
accompanied Mrs Southon on an excursion to Dubbo.
Two things were made abundantly clear to me during
this excursion. First, the quality in terms of behaviour
and effort of these children is incredible. They are a
credit to their parents and this outstanding school.
Second, early primary school teachers definitely earn
their money. Between finding lost clothing,
remembering which student cannot eat bread, which
one does not like butter, the one that becomes car
sick, medication time for some, finding glasses,
refereeing which colour is the best and understanding
what the hell they are upset about, teachers actually
get time to teach. I was asleep on the couch by
7:30pm, a fact the minister found incredibly gratifying
and humorous.
Last week was Secondary Movie night and Primary
Social. The rules for both events are always available in
the newsletter prior to the events. This school always
follows a set policy because if the rules are bent for
one, it becomes the standard. I will always support my
staff at these events as they are an extension of my
beliefs and authority. In short, it is an absolute waste
of time arguing the point in relation to the school
policy. My interpretation of the policy through my staff
is what will be followed. Every parent has the right to
make a complaint about the school and I encourage
this to happen, if you feel you have a genuine
grievance. A complaint about a school following school
and departmental policy could be difficult to prove.
On Friday, I had the absolute pleasure and honour to
host a small working party of the Tzu Chi Buddhist
group. I am always intrigued by people who can
embrace a belief system and live a life of community
service.

This organisation donated exceptional school starter
packs to our K-3 students. I am very excited about a
partnership between this organisation and your school.
This group understands and supports the concept of
the school not only being the centre of quality
education in the town, but also a provider of facilities
and pastoral care. Possible projects I spoke about to
this group are: refurbishment of the senior room into
a purpose built learning space, establishment of a
community orchard and an extension of internal
irrigation capacity of the school to allow for the
establishment of a community vegetable garden. Many
of our roofs do not drain into tanks. I consider this a
waste of a precious resource, water. The idea behind
the community gardens is not to affect local food
businesses but to supplement the diet of our students
with fresh fruit and vegetables that would not normally
be purchased in the weekly shop. These vegetables and
fruit will not be wrapped in cardboard or plastic but I
assure students they are still ok to eat.
Last week I received a phone call from Holly from Life
Education. The school will take part in a partnership
with Life Education to encourage corporate support of
the Life Education movement. I absolutely believe in
Life Education and as a result I am pleased to support
this initiative.
Australia is an exceptional country. We have just had a
State Election without any significant violence or civil
disobedience. America, the home of democracy could
learn from Australia. If anything, the level of political
apathy in this country is dangerous. In Australia, we
have compulsory voting, a system that allows every
person equal representation in the political process. It
amazes me the level of informal or ‘donkey’ votes
where people deliberately make their vote not count.
It seems that many of our great grandfathers would
consider this unforgivable because they fought wars to
allow all of us to elect the government. I suppose we
could sit around and contemplate that by not voting a
person is exercising freedom of speech, which is also a
core value. I would like to think this school teaches
students to be active agents of change by formally
voting. Maybe those people who do not vote also do
not accept the gifts this country provides.
Observant people would notice that the school is
laying turf around the multipurpose court. This will
require more water in the short term to establish, but
after this period will be easily maintained. In reality, the
school grounds now need less water than when both
ovals were operational. The multipurpose court,
cricket nets and School to Work shed are now where
a football field was previously. This significantly
reduces our water requirements. I have spoken to
senior council representatives and they have assured
me that there is not a two hour restriction for
watering as the dam is metred. It is impossible for us
to keep this community asset in good condition with
only two hours two times per week. Consider the
mathematics. We have approximately 70 sprinklers
that are connected to the tank. Two hours does not
even complete one cycle of one line. The Brookview
Street units which deserve water as much as us have
less than 10. I am very willing only to water two days
per week but until there are restrictions imposed by
council, our whole oval will be watered, which
requires much more than two hours. I understand that
the water is a community asset. However, I am also
asking for some common sense in this debate and the
size of the area to be considered. Also the pump for
the dam has been non-operational for a considerable
period. Any water lost from dam is through
evaporation at this stage.
Recently, Mr Chris Harris a journalist that did a
wonderful story on our school wrote a very cutting
piece about spelling mistakes in school newsletters.
One of the people identified as having spelling mistakes
was Mrs Cara Cracknell, former principal of this
school. I believe this is very unfair as I still benefit from
the incredible work of Mrs Cracknell in developing
policy and procedure. It is not a valid assumption that
a few typos in a newsletter are the indication of the
literacy of a person. Indeed, I would think the
journalistic quality of the Telegraph would be more in
question than the skill of Mrs Cracknell.
Checking my spelling.

Ajax’s
Weekly Woof
Woof Woof awards: 500 happy woofs to our Buddhist friends at Tzu
Chi Australia. Your visit once again shows us that
people care all over Australia. The school packs are
amazing.
5 happy woofs to Jacko and the school to work
students for laying the turf around the multi-purpose court. This area is going to be a
community asset especially when the fitness trail is
finished. I am sure the boys appreciated my help
with digging holes. I am sure Jacko was counting
the number of trucks going to the tractor pull
when he looked at my work. There were at least
three trucks.
5 happy woofs to Lachlan Skipworth for picking up
the rubbish that was left on the oval last week.
Mate you could have left the crumbs!
15 happy woofs to those students who helped
when two students had accidents in the playground
last week. Our school had a bad week last week
but gravity can be a bugger.
20 happy woofs to Digger Anderson and
committee for the tractor pull. Southo said the
financial multiplier effect of a good idea on a
country town is not only measured in money but
the amount of awareness of our town. I think that
means happy people come back.
10 angry woofs to students not putting their food
scraps in the bin. As part of my community service
I have been eating the scraps but Southo said I will
need a reversing buzzer on my backside if I keep
going. I think he may need a mirror.
10 angry woofs to the people who decide it is alright to do burn outs in Gobondery street. It
appears not all humans have evolved rationale high
order thinking. There are young children that live
in that street.
Until next week, Ajax
Ajax likes to learn too!

Sun Safe Policy This term is a No Hat No Play term. Students
MUST wear a wide brimmed hat. This means that if
they do not have a hat, they cannot participate in
any outdoor activities including lunch time play. We
keep a small selection of spare hats for those
students who accidently forget their hats. These
hats are washed regularly but are not to be used every day by the same students. We will endeavour
to call parents to let them know their child has
forgotten their hat so that it can be found. Please
make sure you put your child’s name inside their
hat.
Year 1/2 Excursion Last Tuesday the Year 1/2 students, Mrs Southon
and Mr Southon participated in an excursion to
Dubbo. They watched the Gruffalo and enjoyed
lunch in the park together. Thank you to Mrs
Southon for organising this excursion for the
students and to Mr Southon for driving the bus.
Social Last Thursday night a social was held in Room 12.
It was a fabulous night for all the students involved.
Thank you to Mrs Southon, Mr Burley, Miss
Waterford and Mrs Cleal for supervising the event.
These opportunities would not go ahead without
teachers volunteering their time to organise and
supervise the event.
Basketball Sessions This week will be the final sessions of basketball.
These sessions have been a fabulous experience for
the students and we would like to thank Rona for
her expertise and patience.
Parent/Teacher Interviews The teachers are looking forward to meeting with
all parents next Tuesday 9th April for parent/
teacher interviews. This is a fabulous opportunity
for parents to discuss their child’s progress with
their classroom teachers.
Please fill in your chosen time slots, send them back
into school or call the school to arrange a time.
PSSA Girls Netball Trials Girls from years 5 and 6 will have the opportunity
to be involved in PSSA Girls Netball Trials with girls
from Tullamore next week. A note will be sent
home as soon as details have been finalised.
Assembly Join us for an assembly on Friday 5th April at 2pm in
Library. Each class will have an item to perform.
This is a fabulous opportunity to see what the
students have been doing in their classrooms.
Please see the attached flyer.

Secondary
Last week we had some new teachers from Forbes
High School who visited TCS to observe some
classes as part of their professional learning. Both
of these teachers commented on our students’
behaviour and engagement in an extremely positive
way. As always these comments are pleasing as
they are an external source of feedback on our
students and teachers.
Our chess team progressed to the next round of
the NSW Schools’ chess tournament with some
stunning victories and stubborn stalemates.
Congratulations to all student’s involved and Mr
Lynn for his organisation and coaching of the team.
On Thursday our Year 8, 9/10 Elective Art and
Year 11 Visual Design students will be travelling to
Orange to view the Archibald Portrait exhibition.
As well as taking in the exhibition our students’ will
also be undertaking a workshop. This is an
excellent opportunity which allows our students to
access such engaging activities and experiences.
Thanks Mrs Gray ans Mrs Williams for the
organisation of this excursion and Mrs Bridges for
her support in transport.
As previously noted in Mr Southon’s newsletter we
consistently try to offer extracurricular
experiences to school for our students. One of
these innovations is self-defence classes. While we
abhor violence we wish that our students have
some level of skill to keep themselves safe if that
unfortunate scenario ever arises. This week on
Wednesday Year 7/8 and Thursday Year 9/10 will
be having instruction on this at school. It is a credit
to the students’ maturity that we feel this can be
offered at school.
Finally a heads up for what will be a very busy next
Friday. We will be having the cross country in the
morning, followed by a Secondary Reward
Assembly in the middle session of the day. After
lunch our fabulous SRC will be running Easter
activities.
Any questions please contact me at school.
Have a great week

Secondary parent-teacher interviews plus
Next Tuesday evening we will holding our first
formal parent/teacher evening. I genuinely believe
that these are extremely important events which
assist in the formation of communication channels
between home and school. The old saying is that it
takes a village to raise a child and in the same sense
it’s not just the school which contributes to
children’s education. I often use the word team
when discussing our school community for the
simple reason that is what we are.
Please attend next Tuesday’s conference even if it
is just an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher
or a chance for a free sausage sandwich [big thanks to our awesome P&C for the last part!]. Also all
parents are welcome to see me in my position of
Head Teacher, even if I do not teach your child
specifically [Year 7/8 parents are welcome to come
and see me with any questions, comments or
antidotes].
