Bryant & Sons of St. Martin topped at 215p/kg twice – the 630kg steer realising £1,354 to Chris Dale of Dales Family Butchers, Helston; the 557kg heifer bought by R.J. Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow. Two cows achieving 148p/kg with the giant 938kg South Devon x for Messrs. D. Trewern & Son of St. Levan making a whopping £1,388 to David King of Exeter. Friesians to 123p/kg for Chynoweth Farm Partners of St. Allen, with a 788kg cow from Mr. C.M. Phillips of St. Mawes dearest at £930, both bought by Dawn West Devon of Hatherleigh. A fine entry of store cattle which included two small herd dispersals with almost 300 store cattle on offer. Grand 2 year old cattle from Messrs. M.D. Curtis & Son of Gunwalloe saw pairs of Limousin x steers to £1,105 and British Blues to £1,095, also claiming overall top price heifer at £1,100 with a Limousin x. A run of nice Herefords from Messrs. Harris & Sons of Wendron under 2 years old saw oldest bunch of four steers to £990. Pure South Devon 14 month old steers from Lello Bros. Ltd of Kehelland saw top pair reach £985 with same age Limousin crosses for Mr. W.L. Hollow of Towednack seeing top trio £940. Last Spring’s Limousin x 14 month old calves from the herd dispersed on behalf of Messrs. R.H. & R.D. Richards of Sparnon Gate saw dearest bunch of four steers to £885 and top heifer pair hit £855. Four 10 month old Limousin and South Devon cross steers for Miss R. Harris of Ruan High Lanes sold at £790 and £780. This week on the heifer side were well-grown 18 month old Friesian heifers for Mr. J.L. Sampson of St. Buryan which sold keenly to £890. SPECIAL BEEF SUCKLER SALE (86 HEAD) Auctioneer – Patrick Dennis

The Special Beef Suckler Sale included two small herd dispersals for local farmers. The first on behalf of Diddy Farms of St. Stephen, St. Austell saw his herd of Pedigree Charolais and pure bred Charolais sell extremely well with top cow and calf to £1,700 with other notable prices being £1,500, £1,450 and £1,430 with the average standing at almost £1,400.

Just over 20 cows and calves for Messrs. R.H. & R.D. Richards of Sparnon Gate, Redruth, mainly commercial types, but some Pedigree and all with Spring-born Pedigree “Chytodden” Limousin-sired calves at foot sold well with a top price of £1,340 for a Charolais outfit. Their overall average was almost £1,100.

An entry of young South Devon bulling heifers from Lello Bros. Ltd of Kehelland, Camborne sold to an extremely good trade topping at £905 and averaging around £850.

Trade was harder this week with higher numbers of lambs being marketing and the associated seasonal dip in averages. The lighter weights were less sought after, as reflected in the prices. With 130 lambs over the notified entries, buyers are keen to stress the importance of notifying us of your entries. The premium heavyweights were commanding top money selling to £97 for a smart pen of eight 47.8kg lambs from Messrs. W.S. Gay & Son of St. Allen, purchased by J.V. Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station, closely followed twice at £96 for pens from Messrs. N.A. & J.R. Phillips of Restronguet and heavies from Messrs. J.E.
