Tue 22 October 6pm - 7.30pmAUTUMN ART LECTURE

Travels with the Mughal EmperorThe Mughal Emperor Jahangir (r. 1605-1627) travelled across the empire throughout his reign. Whenever the court transferred between the imperial cities of Lahore, Agra and Delhi, the ruler and the elite camped en route in a vast, luxuriously appointed tented city with its own bazaars and workshops. At all times the court was deemed to be wherever the Emperor was, and its rituals and ceremonials continued during his extended absences from the major cities. This lecture describes the influence of Jahangir’s peripatetic life on the production of art for the court.

Andre Geim - Random Walk to StockholmAndre Geim was awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics jointly with Konstantin Novoselov for his work on graphene. On the other hand, graphene has acquired so many superlatives to its name that people started calling it a wonder material. Sir Andre will discuss how this research started and, then, try to explain why graphene attracts so much attention today. This is one of a number of events with Physics World, marking the 25th anniversary of the flagship magazine of the Institute of Physics.

If mayors ruled the worldThe issues dominating our headlines - global warming, terrorism, economic inequality - do not stop at national borders, but our chief means of addressing them remains the nation-state, a 17th century framework constitutionally unable, and temperamentally unwilling, to collaborate across frontiers to solve common problems.
