It also included a panel of suicide survivors in a segment entitled “Beyond Our Pain: Survivors of Suicide Speak Out”. Clark Flatt, President/CEO, Jason Foundation, Inc., facilitated the panel. Guests discussed how their experiences with suicide grief inspired them to community action and the care of others. Participants included Karyl Chastain Beal, Facilitator of the Parents of Suicides / Friends and Families of Suicides (POS-FFOS) online support forum; Jacky Jessop, Faciltator of POS-FFOS’s Australia/New Zealand Chapter; Cindy Johnson, Regional Director of Marketing for Tennessee Health Management, and Annette Lake, Community Activist. Photos from the Suicide Prevention Symposium are available at TSPN’s Facebook page, as well as the Network’s recently established Tumblr blog (see page 5). A selection of these photos are also featured on page 2 of this newsletter. The Network would like to acknowledge the many agencies and corporations who sponsored this event and made it the success that it was. A full listing of these sponsors is available on page 3 of this publication. We would also like to thank the presenters and speakers for their informative and thought-provoking comments. Special thanks is due to Trevecca Community Church for hosting the event and helping to coordinate the proceedings and to TSPN central office staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts to see this event through. Finally, we offer our sincerest thanks to the membership of TSPN at large for promoting and supporting this event. The Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network looks forward to further opportunities to bring suicide prevention information and resources to local communities and to the state of Tennessee at large. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) released the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM-V, but its debut was not without controversy. In advance of the DSM-V’s release, Thomas R. Insel, MD, Director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) announced that NIMH would be moving away from DSM diagnostic criteria in its research. In an April 29 blog post on the NIMH website, he argued that DSM-V criteria are based too much on symptom clusters rather than clinically tested measures. “(S)ymptom-based diagnosis, once common in other areas of medicine, has been largely replaced in the past half century as we have understood that symptoms alone rarely indicate the best choice of treatment.” While Insel is on record as stating that he did not intend a wholesale denunciation of the DSM, the post has been referred to as “a humiliating blow to the APA” (as described by Psychology Today) and a “kill-shot” (as labeled by the online journal Science 2.0). Meanwhile, the chair of the task force that developed the previous DSM slammed the inclusion of several diagnoses which could lead to unnecessary medication. Allen Frances, MD, who coordinated the creation of the DSM-IV, contributed an editorial to Annals of Internal Medicine warning that “several high-prevalence diagnoses at the fuzzy boundary with normality” may be exploited by pharmaceutical interests. For example, the removal of a “bereavement exclusion” from the criteria for major depressive disorder may lead to grieving but otherwise healthy patients being prescribed antidepressants. A new entry into the DSM, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD), pertains to children who demonstrate chronic outbursts and irritability—Frances and other critics worry that children who have regular temper tantrums will be medicated instead of counseled. The developers of the DSM-V addressed these and other concerns during a May 20 press release in San Francisco marking the official release of the manual. DSM-V task force chair David Kupfer, MD, of the University of Pittsburgh, defended moves criticized by Allen and others, arguing new diagnoses and refinements of old ones were necessary to prevent legitimate mental health complaints from being mislabeled or undiagnosed.

As part of TSPN’s continuing engagement with emerging social media, the Network has created “TSPN on Tumblr”, which will help promote TSPN projects and events. The Network’s Tumblr blog, available at tspnorg.tumblr.com, was created on May 20. Its first posts, following a brief introductory message, included photos from the Suicide Prevention Symposium (see page 1) and a promotion for the Disaster Distress Hotline (1-800-985-5990), occasioned by the devastating tornados which struck Oklahoma that same day. Future posts will include information on TSPN meetings, local and statewide outreach projects, and select reposts from other mental health and wellness blogs.

“TSPN on Tumblr”, along with TSPN’s Facebook page and Twitter feed (@TSPNorg), is part of a continuing effort to reach the next generation of mental health activists and engage them in suicide prevention and mental health projects. We encourage TSPN members and partner agencies with a presence on Tumblr to follow us and promote “TSPN on Tumblr” to interested contacts. We also encourage you to visit the Networks’ other online portals: our Facebook page, our Twitter feed, and the TSPN website (www.tspn.org).
