Together for Safer Roads (TSR) embarked on its first awareness initiative in April by aligning with The World Day for Safety and Health at Work on April 28, 2015. TSR worked with several member companies to celebrate and promote road safety through communications via internal events, social media and external communication efforts. The coalition provided a comprehensive toolkit to members that incorporated TSR’s core messages to be used in efforts in conjunction with World Safety Day and company safety initiatives. The toolkit included creative materials, messages, social media guidelines and posts, and World Safety Day communications tactics. The following report summarizes activities and results of participating TSR’s members.

Results Six members participated in TSR’s World Safety Day initiative—AB InBev, AIG, AT&T, PepsiCo, Ryder, and Walmart. Together, we engaged approximately 492,000 employees globally through in-person events and online activities. Countries engaged included Brazil, Canada, China, Mexico, Russia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. A range of activities were implemented from in-person safety training sessions to online promotions. Table 1 below provides a highlight of the activities implemented by member companies followed by a summary of each organization’s activities.

AIG AIG launched a section on their website dedicated to road safety: www.aig.com/roadsafety. The website includes a section on why road safety matters with an infographic, a pledge to help make roads safer (3,500 pledges), an overview of AIG’s road safety initiatives, and a page dedicated to TSR. AIG also released a road safety white paper, sent an email to its 65,000 employees around the world to raise awareness about road safety, and incorporated road safety in its national partnership with the American Heart Association (AHA). Specifically, 5,000 light reflectors and bracelets were distributed at Heart Walks in New York, Kansas, and Colorado.

AT&T AT&T focused on distracted driving for World Safety Day by leveraging its existing It Can Wait campaign through external and internal communications channels. External communications included content in a third party eNewsletter, and It Can Wait and AT&T social media channels (Facebook and Twitter). Internal communications included content on its Insider home page and Social Circle. AT&T also released a study showing that smartphone use while driving can go beyond texting, including social media and video chats

PepsiCo PepsiCo executed an employee awareness campaign by reaching out to its 271,000 employees. The campaign included creating materials and a communications toolkit to promote safe driving among local employees. Specifically, PepsiCo—

Walmart Walmart engaged more than 135,000 employees through more than 2,500 events globally. As part of Walmart’s Corporate Shareholders vendor fair and Logistics Breakout event, two trailers were skinned entirely with road safety messaging, with a dozen more in the near future being displayed at events across the United States. At the events, giveaways were handed out including 10,000 cell phone backers, 10,000 pens, 800 lanyards, 800 badge backers, 10,000 cardboard trucks, and 10,000 stickers. Also, all 60,000 United States trailers will have a TSR decal over time.

Conclusion World Safety Day 2015 was TSR’s first collaborative initiative as a coalition. Together, we engaged approximately 492,000 employees--and it’s only the beginning. TSR will be planning to repeat this effort in 2016, but on a larger scale. The Advocacy and Thought Leadership working group will begin planning next year’s event in fall 2015 alongside other road safety awareness and outreach initiatives. If you and your company would like to be a part of 2016’s World Safety Day, please contact the Advocacy and Thought Leadership Chair, Allison Goldberg at [email protected] or the TSR Secretariat at [email protected].
