Background• Everyday during peak hours there is a traffic chaos in front of the RP II gate

because of The Shri Ram School traffic– School in the center of residential complexes with no direct access to the main road– School involved in legal and non-legal battles with neighborhood communities –

giving very little room to maneuver– The school is growing - from 1200 about 5 years back to 1800 today – and 2400 by

next year • iamgurgaon - a citizen body has stepped forward to find solutions• The problem is being attacked from 4 directions

– Create a parking for about 70 cars near the fruit vendors– Try and creat alternate pedestrian access routes to the school– Try and promote the bus service– Manage the traffic flow better

• The scope of this group is to recommend and drive changes required in the traffic flow

Methodology Followed

• Brain storming with the larger group here• Observing peak hour traffic for 2 days• Informal discussions with other parents• Meeting with RP II RWA • Internal brainstorming

Issues creating the Chaos

• U turns by Pick and Drop cars• Right turns by (Buses, teacher cars, VIP cars, RP2

traffic). Also by RP2 traffic.• Alighting wherever – in front of gate, middle of the

road, from right side of car• Heavy trucks• Trucks from local market• Breakdowns• Pedestrians crossing and walking anywhere• Drop and pick by other school buses for RP2 kids

Traffic Flow Changes

• No U Turn and No Right Turns in School Zone (including School Buses and Teacher’s Cars)

• Parking and waiting STRICTLY in marked zones• Designated drop off and pick up zones for upto 9 cars• Designated drop off zone for other school buses• No trucks allowed• Pedestrian crossing only at designated places• Alighting only from the left side• No parent parking in front of school• Designated U turn points outside

Other Traffic Changes(Maybe more challenging)

• Buses to leave school only after 8:45 AM• No “VIP” status• Trucks from market area not allowed• Other school buses to drop at Windsor Gate• Service vehicle entry from Windsor Gate

• Zoning marked on road surface• Signage• Pedestrian crossing light• Road Divider• Speed Breakers (Requested by RP2)• Pavement modifications at the RP2 gate left turn

to allow buses to turn• Does not include changes required for the Parking

• 5 guards to enforce traffic discipline• 2 guards to manage pedestrian crossing• 1 overall supervisor/manager• 2 – 4 parent/resident volunteers for soft/hard talk• 2 – 4 student volunteers for soft talk• 1 parent volunteer for ongoing communication• 1 traffic policeman (if possible)• Doesn’t include– Parking lot attendants– RP2 Gate to School walk
