“We have surrounded ourselves with so many Houston ties which gives us an opportunity to do a much better job recruiting the Houston area,” Haywood stated. Haywood said the goal is to become champions and that starts with changing the culture of TSU football...”from a discipline and social aspect, to learning how to compete and play the game, then working out in the weight room. Once we have buy-in, we’ll be champions,” emphasized Haywood.

Texas Southern fans are extremely proud of their school and Haywood said they will soon have a football program to brag on as well. Some members of the Maroon and Gray chapter showed their support immediately, by handing over a few unexpected checks for the new head coach and his football program.

Tigers win big over Prairie View at home, Lady Tigers remain unbeaten in SWAC play

The Texas Southern Tigers basketball teams continued their winning ways January 9 in the H&PE Arena with impressive victories over the visiting Panthers of Prairie View A&M University. The Tigers dismantled the Panthers 64-38 to remain undefeated in conference play (3-0) and remain tied for first place in the SWAC. The Lady Tigers remained unbeaten in the SWAC (3-0), as they defeated their rivals 72-65.

Orlando Coleman led the Tigers in scoring with 12 points and 4 rebounds on 5-of-11 shooting. Texas Southern never trailed and took control of the game from the opening tip, scoring the

first 11 points of the game. The run was capped off by a Brian Carey 3-pointer just five minutes into the first half. It was a team effort, as TSU received solid performances from Chris Thomas and Derrick Griffin. Thomas had 9 points and 9 rebounds on 4-of-7 shooting, and Griffin had 8 points and 9 rebounds on 3-of-6 shooting.

The Lady Tigers win pushed their current winning streak to six games. Senior center Keiana Vines scored a career high 29 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Vines was aided by Brianna Sidney's 16 point, 4 assist, and 2 steal effort, along with Toni Cheadle's 10 points and game high 9 rebounds.

The Lady Tigers will take their winning streak on the road and the Tigers will have a first place showdown as both programs will face the Jackson State Tigers Saturday, January 16, in Jackson, Mississippi.
