Please send articles/adverts for the Village News as email attachments. Please keep it simple. Use Word or jpeg formats. No headed paper. Do not send photographs, as these don't work on our printer. Keep to black and white print. Do not send anything containing
colour, such as logos, adverts or copies of posters, as these do not reproduce well, and usually require a lot of amendment and time! Please don’t send PDFs, I can’t transfer them into the newsletter software. We want your pieces for inclusion to look good and we do our
best, but please bear in mind the limitations of the available equipment. Please also check dates in your e-mails and/or hard copies are correct.
Please do not wait for the deadline if items are available prior to that date as early receipt can help with production

The Haselbury Plucknett Charities Registered Charity No 201573
Who we are, and why: The Haselbury Charities were founded to support the poor, the elderly and the sick of the parish, and to help fund education and work tools for young people. With low interest rates, the trustees have only a small amount to give out each year. We aim to give grants where the need is greatest and we will consider all applications. For example, if you are struggling to pay heating bills, or to afford fuel and parking for regular hospital visits, you may wish to apply for a small subsidy. Applicants can telephone the correspondent to the Trustees in strict confidence on 01460 73141 or can write to: Haselbury Plucknett Charities, c/o Stonehayes, Haselbury Plucknett, TA18 7PH. How you can help: Count your blessings and consider villagers less fortunate than yourself. There may be some people in the village who are in a position to support the Charities financially. This could be done by way of a bequest included in a will, or by a monetary gift as a “thank you” to the village, in the knowledge that only genuine deserving cases would benefit from such a generous gesture. If you have a big birthday coming up, or some celebration, you may want to support these charities in lieu of gifts. The Trustees can be contacted as above.

My worst Christmas? One Christmas morning, I woke up, I ran into the living room

This is the first time in my lifetime that we are having a General Election
in December, with all parties making bold promises about the way
forward in tackling the climate crisis, funding our public services, creaking
local authorities and our future relations with our neighbours in Europe.
At times like this the story of Christmas can be especially significant.
After all it is a celebration of something remarkable being born –
a king born in a stable, welcomed not by fawning courtiers but shepherds come down
from the hillside; born to a young ordinary couple in less than promising circumstances,
but seen as the source of hope in the world by wise men from far away. It is the moment
when two worlds clash; the world of the Herods and Caesars, of wealth, intrigue and
power and the world of life and love; the stories of Christmas are not pipe dreams but
rather a proclamation of a different way of being with each other in the world. What we
see in the birth of Jesus is the chance to follow a different path.
What we celebrate at Christmas is not just something that happened a long time ago but
is very much about now. We are invited to let the Christ child to be born in us. During
the season we will sing the carol with the line ‘O holy child of Bethlehem be born in us
today’. That is the hope - that our lives will be filled with the compassion, the wisdom,
the joy that accompany this particular birth.
Through the wonderful season of Advent, we wait expectantly for the light to be born in
ourselves, hearing the words from the prophets that speak of new possibilities being born
in us and in the world around us.
If the commentators are right, this election is going to be close with lots of tactical
voting; sometimes in pursuit of the common good we must think bigger than our own
self interest; let the Christmas story, in all its mystery, open hearts and minds to the
possibility of living compassionately, doing justice and walking gently on this earth.
With every blessing for these wonderful weeks ahead,
Jonathan Morris

Wednesday 4th December at 7.30 pm
Speaker: David Sutcliffe
Topic: Winter Customs
At the Bible Christian Centre, Haselbury
Members’ competition: a wrapped parcel (for swapping)
A live performance of a love song by Daisy Duck – not what you’d expect in
Haselbury, but in November we were treated to that and some of Ellie Baer’s more
poignant songs. Ellie also told us about her life, starting as the child of one half of
a famous duo, the Turner Twins, and then writing country music and children’s
educational songs for cartoons. As a singer-songwriter and actress, she became a
voiceover artist, then a producer. Composing, singing and family are the main
loves of this talented lady. We enjoyed a real treat.
David Sutcliffe will enlighten us about winter customs at our December meeting,
and we’ll share a light buffet supper as well as exchanging pretty parcels.
That should get us in the mood for Christmas.
January meeting:

The 25 rain days produced 145mm (5.6 inches) of rain, being 156% of average.

A very brief AGM took place & saw the existing officials reappointed
but with members put on warning that they would need new
appointees for 2021 as the existing incumbents felt it was time some
new faces were in place.
The usual wine & cheese was available and the attraction of this was seen when
Elizabeth turned up late, having already been to one AGM although the other one
whilst nearer to home, had no refreshments after the business was completed!
Our December meeting is on the 10th (a week earlier than usual) when Mary
Benger will give a talk on how to make Gardening Easier. I doubt she will be
recommending we concrete over our gardens but, we would all welcome some tips
on making the job simpler no matter how much enjoyment we get from our
gardening. The meeting will conclude with the usual festive buffet supplied by
members.
January 21st will see Christine Stones give a talk entitled Water, Power, Prestige
and Beauty in the Garden. Christine has worked for the BBC and has a Masters
Degree in Garden History. With this varied background and experience we should
be able to look forward to an interesting start to the 2020 season.
Visitors and new members always welcome and with the new subscription year
(£5pp) starting in January now is the time to come along and meet us.

There is a collection point for waste paper – bundled newspapers or magazines –
near St Michaels church. If you follow the path from the main church gate towards the
farm along the churchyard wall you’ll see an old greengrocer’s shed on your right

proceeds go towards the grass cutting in the churchyard.

Droning On
Getting out of the car one afternoon I heard this buzzing noise overhead. I looked up
and flying around at about 50ft was a Drone, well I had never seen one of these at such
close quarters so I stood and watched till it landed nearby but out of sight.
I went indoors thinking to myself that whilst I knew drones should not be flown near
people I was unaware of the actual rules and was considering how best to check these,
with a view to an article in the News if space permitted, when a Policeman arrived at
my house. He said that he had been flying the Drone and noticing my interest thought
it best to come and explain.
His Drone unit is based in Bristol and is called out to assist with searches for fugitives
or missing vulnerable people when their low flying and easy manoeuvrability is
preferable to a helicopter and is also far cheaper. The pilots are fully trained and
licensed to fly at low level in built up areas. He showed me the Drone which cost
some £6K and the camera that they use, cost £8K and it can also carry heat seeking
equipment if needed.
Whilst the person they were looking for that day was found by other resources it is
comforting to know that such a facility is available when needed.
For information and for anyone who may receive a Drone for Christmas the rules are
readily available on the internet (it would appear that they also cover model
aeroplanes). Basically drones must not be flown above 400 metres or within
50metres of a person, vehicle or building not under the fliers control.

Whilst the club is not quite in hibernation we are catching our breath before work starts in the new year for our players and ground staff. A huge thank you for all those who supported the bonfire and firework night despite the horrendous weather for most of the Saturday. It was a question of just carrying as our pyrotechnic team were unable to offer any alternative dates. Once again many thanks go to Ian Mogg for the build of the bonfire. We are holding a Christmas Bingo at the pavilion on Tuesday 3rd December with doors opening at 6.45pm. There is a fine selection of festive prizes for house and line winners. Youth players please keep an eye on club web site or Spond for details of winter coaching which should be starting late December. News of our cricketer’s playing abroad this winter. Alex Eckland has returned to Adelaide CC and started well for them. Jack Henderson our overseas from New Zealand is currently not playing whilst he recovers from a shoulder injury. Finally Perrott Monkeys our village skittle team play at the pavilion on Friday nights and would welcome any support if you wish to visit the club for a drink and catch up. Haselbury in Bloom 2020
Following on from our 2019 success in South West in Bloom, when
Haselbury Plucknett received a Gold award and a further discretionary
award for Exceptional Community Effort, a meeting is to take place at the
Bible Christian Centre on Tuesday 21st January 2020 at 7.00pm to discuss
next year’s entry.
In 2020 it would be a real bonus if another route around the Village could
be shown to the Judges. So, if you wish to showcase the area where you
live, have any ideas on how other parts of the Village could be developed,
skills you would like to share, or you would just like to contribute to our
efforts in next year’s competition, please come along.
Contributing can take up as much time as you wish and could include
organising a “Doorstep Challenge”, or something similar, providing plants
for a Plant Stall at the May Fair, helping with planting, watering, weeding
and deadheading or simply taking part in the Village clean-up days.
Whatever you feel you can do, your help and your support would be
welcomed.

Do something amazing in 2020.
For many, the start of a new year brings an opportunity for reflection, fresh
starts and change - but could you change a child’s story this year?
For over 500 children in Somerset, spending time at home isn’t possible
right now, which is why we urgently need more foster carers to offer safe,
loving homes to our children in care. Foster carers can make a real
difference to children’s lives. They help them through tough times and give
them the support they need to achieve their full potential.
Fostering is not a one size fits all. There are a variety of different avenues
within fostering to match the vast and sometimes complex needs of the
children in our care, and the lifestyles of our carers; from the dedication of
long term fostering over a period of years, to the flexibility of respite
providing care just one weekend a month. In return our carers receive
ongoing support and training, a dedicated social worker and a weekly fee
and allowance (amounts vary – please speak to our team or visit the website
for details).
If you’re aged 21 or over and have a spare room, along with the time and
patience to support a Somerset child in care,
visit fosteringinsomerset.org.uk or call our team on 0800 587 9900 to find
out how you could help change a child’s story. There is no upper age limit,
and things like your gender, sexual preference or marital status are not
important – you just need the right qualities and mindset. Alternatively,
come along to our next information evening and find out more about
fostering over a coffee and cake. Costa Coffee, 8 Townsend Shopping Park,
Shepton Mallet on Tuesday 14th January 2020 from 7-9pm.

Wadham School Chaplaincy Report
Firstly, apologies that I have not written a report for so long. This half term has been a
long but busy one. I am now able to be in school for two full days which is making a
big difference to the role and the support I can offer. During lunchtimes on a Monday
and Thursday the Chapel is open to any students who want to come and chat, play
games and on a Thursday enjoy sweet treats. This has been a great way to build
relationships where students feel that they can talk to and trust me. I have the privilege
of being able to spend time mentoring a few students from various year groups,
providing a listening ear and sounding board when they need it. Not only am I able to
provide this for students but also staff. The role of Chaplaincy is one that I am learning
as I go for no two chaplains' roles look the same but it’s a joy and a privilege to be able
to serve God, the school and community in this small way. Thank you so much for your
support, encouragement and prayers. If you would like to know more, please do get in
touch with me- [email protected]
Prayer Points:
Please continue to pray for the re-organisation of the school system in the area.
We are due a SIAMS inspection this term, pray for leadership team , and all those
that will be involved in the inspection.
Please continue to pray for me. That I will be inspired by the Spirit as to how best
to share God’s love throughout the school community. For wisdom in
supporting students and staff. And for God’s power to sustain me in my role.
Pray for the whole school community. If you would like a copy of the school
prayer calendar, please email me and I will be happy to send you a copy – each
day suggests one aspect of the school community to pray for.

Winter is now with us. Tawny Owls are calling - what a lovely sound that is -
and the birds are back at our feeders in increasing numbers with the voles
and mice scurrying in to take any fallen morsels.
On the down side, there is a really nasty avian disease called Trichomonosis
which has been decimating our finch population over the last 10 years or so.
It mostly affects greenfinches, chaffinches and bullfinches but sparrows
and goldfinches are also susceptible. A sick bird will tend to stay close to
food and water as it is starving and thirsty but cannot swallow. It won’t fly
far and food debris may be seen around it’s beak. It’s breathing is fast
and bubbly. A very sad sight. Unfortunately we cannot help these birds but
we can try to stop the disease spreading.
The disease is spread through contaminated food and water. If a sick bird
has been trying to feed, any food it has come in contact with will also be
contaminated. The same applies to water. We can help by cleaning all
feeders and water containers regularly with eco friendly detergent and
rinse with boiling water. Clear up any debris on the ground and move
feeders around. If we can have 2 sets of feeders then one can be left to
dry thoroughly after cleaning while the other is used.
It is advised that if you see a sick bird, stop feeding for 1-2 weeks so that
the birds will disperse [hopefully to the fields or non infected feeders
elsewhere). Your regulars will come back!
As ever, the Group would love to hear from you.
