MIDDLE EAST

My perspective is unique, both as the vice consul for Israel in San Francisco,

and as a Bedouin and the highest-ranking Muslim representing the Israel in

the United States. I was born into a Bedouin tribe in Northern Israel, one of

11 children, and began life as shepherd living in our family tent. I went on to

serve in the Israeli border police, and later earned a master's degree in

political science from Tel Aviv University before joining the Israel Foreign

Ministry.

Paul Posnak, the Jewish pianist who can bridge the gap between classical music and jazz, will take you on a musical and historical journey that is both entertaining and informative. Dr. Posnak’s phenomenal pianism, and his many years of professional research, have made him America’s foremost exponent of authentic Classic Jazz Piano. He performs, improvises upon and defines each style: Ragtime, Stomp, Danza Cubana and Stride, along with Popular and Classical Jewish music. Classics by Scott Joplin, George Gershwin, Thomas “Fats” Waller and Jelly Roll Morton alongside musical pictures of Jewish life by Lazar Weiner and the Danzas Cubanas of Ernesto Lecuona.

Dear Members: As we enter this joyous Holiday Season of Passover (Pessach), Yom Hatzmaut, and Shavuot, we also remember that during these happy days, there are also sad days, such as Yom Hashoah and Yom

Hazikaron. These days are to remember the past, reflect on the realities of today and inspire us to look at better future. As it is said, we cannot continue to move forward, if we do not know where we are coming from. Although it is a sad day to remember the Holocaust; this past April 1, our Congregation was the host to more than 400 high school students from throughout Miami-Dade County Public School System. These students listened to a very emotional five hour program organized by The Holocaust Education and Documentation Center, a local organization that was very dear to our principal benefactor, Jack Chester (z”l). Ten students and a teacher were joined at each table together with a holocaust survivor within the Olemberg Ballroom space. Each survivor was able to explain to these adolescents, his/her horrible experiences during the Nazi years, as well as his/her joy for being among the G-d chosen ones that were able to escape, survive and be liberated by the Allied Forces. In attendance were also Jewish veterans of the United States Army, who participated in the liberation of the concentration camps. Rabbi Abramowitz opened the ceremony explaining his experiences as a US Army Chaplain and his subsequent relationship with these survivors. Among those survivors present were members of our Congregation, such as Lucy Kalusin, our first, first lady and Leo Rosner who wrote a book: The Holocaust Remembered, a Child Survivor’s Account of Imprisonment and Redemption 1939-1945. In his dedication of his book to me, Mr. Leo Rosner wrote “Keep the faith, never give up hope, always remember and never forget. It is interesting that these words are the same ones that we need to always circle in our minds, when we also think about our Cuban Hebrew Congregation-Temple Beth Shmuel. Thanks to the welcoming people of Cuba, most of our members and their families were able to escape the horrors of the Nazi regimen and live very happily, although struggling a lot at first, in a beautiful island surrounded by noble, caring people of all ethnic groups who have always respected the way we are. It is interesting that during my first term as President in 1992, there were changes in Cuba allowing again open religious practices. This policy change led Rabbi Shmuel Szteinhendler to be the first official Rabbi to travel to the Island to revive the very small Jewish

Community that was left. He was sponsored by the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), and organization that we also support. Now during this second term, it seems that rapid changes may occur in Cuba as a result of our new US President, Barack Obama. Because of our heritage, and our excellent reputation, there is an interest in our organization. During the last few weeks we are getting calls from the media and academicians. Of course, we are cautious in the way we speak, because our by-laws prohibit us, as a religious organization, to become involved in politics or in controversial political debates or arguments regarding the United States, Israel, Cuba or any other country. As Cuban Jews we need to be proud of our triple heritage, and it is extremely important that we maintain our organization strong. Dramatic historical events may occur during the next few months. For this reason, it is important that we maintain our doors open as an active independent organization, as we have proudly done for the last 47 years. Therefore, I would like to remind you that if you have any forthcoming “simchas,” think of your second home as the place where to bring your family and friends, so that you may be blessed for a long, healthy and happy life, together with those dear to you. Follow the lead of other members who have already celebrated their life cycle events with us. Please talk to them and you will feel how excited they still are, and what a memorable occasion that day was for them. During the next few weeks, we will have an event to show our historic video presentation which covers our arrival in Cuba, our exodus to the United States and our life in Miami during almost five decades. We are also preparing cultural and educational programs in addition to our religious activities. In the meantime, if you have any balances in your account, whether it was for pledges, during Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, High Holiday seats, Yizkor donations, membership dues or any other service received, please forward your check quickly. As you start your vacations during the next few weeks, please drop your check in the mail box on the way to the port or airport, or even better, bring it to the office personally. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS by Rabbi Mayer Abramowitz

The UN was founded in April of 1945. With World War II winding down, virtually all of mankind eagerly looked for world peace to spring forth from that body. I recall a special TV program in which the UN sought a formula to create a lasting peace in the world. In that TV show each of the fifty founding members of the UN fed their problems - economic, political, and border disputes - into a huge computer. As the computer was digesting these problems, bells were clanging, lights were blinking and suddenly, all quieted down as a printout was rolling out of the computer. The UN president, took the printed message and read it to the gathering. The huge audience was stunned when the president read the printout: “To attain to a world peace mankind must live in according to the Ten Commandments.” The holiday of the Ten Commandments - Shavuot - will soon be upon us. This year, Shavuot falls on Friday and Saturday, May 29 and 30. We will read the Ten Commandments and learn that its message is and was meant for mankind. There is a midrash which may recall the TV Show I described above. That Midrash states that as each of the Ten Commandments was called out at Mt. Sinai, it was immediately translated into the seventy languages of mankind. We Jews have been called The People of the Book. As such we are filled not only with a sense of pride but with a sense of responsibility for living in accordance with the ethical, theological and ritual precepts expounded in the Ten Commandments.

At the same time, Rabbi Mayer Abramowitz also mentioned works by this renowned visitor, and finally, our President, Marcos A. Kerbel, gave him a warm welcome. Under the theme of the evening, “The Boom of Anti-Semitism and Anti-Israel in Latin America. Who is behind the impulse and why”, Mr. Montaner started detailing the differences between anti-semitism, anti-israelism, and anti-zionism, as well as its reconciliations; reviewing world history and its connection with the Jewish people, to finally end up in the Latin America of today, discovering and outlining for us the way that the president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, uses these three factors previously mentioned in his insane campaign to export his “Socialism of the 21st Century” to the rest of the Continent.

Right after the conference, there was a question and answer period led by Mr. Salomon Garazi, and where all the attendees had an opportunity to ask Mr. Montaner direct questions regarding various topics related to anti-Semitism in the world, especially in Latin America, and as expected, some of the questions were directed at the Cuban Government’s position with respect to Israel and the Jewish Community. At the end of the evening, Carlos Alberto Montaner, humbly interacted with the audience. He stayed to sign some of his books that were available for sale in the lobby of our Temple, and that had been brought for sale as a courtesy by Ediciones Universal, whose proprietors, Mr. Manuel Salvat and his wife, were kind enough to attend to the sale and who had the wonderful gesture of donating part of their profit from the sale. We thank them for their donations to our Temple Cultural Fund. We also want to thank all the members of our Board of Directors, Women’s League, Israeli

For those who haven't heard, the first week in March has been designated as Israel Apartheid Week by activists who are either ill intentioned or misinformed. On American c a m p u s e s , o r g a n i z i n g committees are planning happenings to once again casti-gate Israel as the lone responsible party for all that maligns the Middle East. Last year, at UC Berkeley, I had the opportunity to "dialogue" with some of the organizers of these events. My perspective is unique, both as the vice consul for Israel in San Francisco, and as a Bedouin and the h i g h e s t - r a n k i n g M u s l i m representing the Israel in the United States. I was born into a Bedouin tribe in Northern Israel, one of 11 children, and began life as shepherd living in our family tent. I went on to serve in the Israeli border police, and later earned a master's degree in political science from Tel Aviv University before joining the Israel Foreign Ministry. I am a proud Israeli - along with many other non-Jewish Israelis such as Druze, Bahai, Bedouin, Christians and Muslims, who live in one of the most culturally diversified societies and the only true democracy in the Middle East. Like America, Israeli society is far from per-fect, but let us deals honestly. By any yardstick you choose - educa t iona l oppor tun i t y ,

economic development, women and gay's rights, freedom of speech and assembly, legislative representation - Israel's minorities fare far better than any other country in the Middle East So, I would like to share the following with organizers of Israel Apartheid week, for those of them who are open to dialogue and not blinded by a hateful ideology: You are part of the problem, not part of the solution: If you are really idealistic and committed to a better world, stop with the false rhetoric. We need moderate people to come together in good faith to help find the path to relieve the human suffering on both sides of the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Vilification and false labeling is a blind alley that is unjust and takes us nowhere. Y o u d e n y I s r a e l t h e fundamental right of every society to defend itself: You condemn Israel for building a security barrier to protect its citizens from suicide bombers and for striking at buildings from which missiles are launched at its cities - but you never offer an alternative. Aren't you practicing yourself a deep form of racism by denying an entire society the right to defend itself? Your criticism is willfully hypocr i t ical: Do Israel 's Arab citizens suffer from disadvantage? You better believe it. Do African Americans 10 minutes from the Berkeley c a m p u s s u f f e r f r o m disadvantage - you better believe it, too. So should we launch a Berkeley Apartheid Week, or should we seek real

ways to better our societies and make opportunity more available. You are betraying the moderate Muslims and Jews who are working to achieve peace: Your radicalism is undermining the forces for peace in Israel and in the Palestinian territories. We are working hard to move toward a peace agreement that recognizes the legitimate rights of both Israel and the Palestinian people, and you are tearing down by falsely vilifying one side. To the organizers of Israel Apartheid Week I would like to say: If Israel were an apartheid state, I would not have been appointed here, nor would I have chosen to take upon myself this duty. There are many Arabs, both within Israel and in the Palestinian territories who have taken great courage to walk the path of peace. You should stand with us, rather than against us. Celebrating Isaac Epelbaum’s 70 th Birthday at Temple Beth Shmuel

Happy Birthday Papi Love, your daughter Annette

Papi, there aren’t enough words to describe the gratitude I have for all that you have given me and all the life lessons you have taught me. Most importantly, you have taught me to love unconditionally and that family comes first.

You have shown this to me my whole life, but now as an adult I can really appreciate these principles when raising my own children. I know I am all grown up now, but I know that I still need my papi. Knowing that I can count on you for anything, whether it’s taking care of my children when I’m traveling with Mark or just changing my light bulbs and air filters is indescribable. These actions go unnoticed by most, but for me I am very thankful and grateful for all that you do. Just last month when i was away with Mark, you and mommy moved into my house and took care of my kids. It was nice to come home to a home cooked meal (thanks mom) and newly lit up lights in my hallway and family room.

You have also taught me the value of a dollar. Growing up, you worked 6 to 7 days a week. We lived a very simple life, taking the city bus everywhere, eating at home most nights of the week and only buying things when we really needed them. I couldn’t understand your ways at time, but now I can appreciate the value of a dollar, as well as, hard work. In today’s day and age, it is a constant struggle to maintain a simple life and teach our children the value of a dollar.

My children may not always have the simplest life as most of you who know me would agree. Between ice hockey, figure skating, girl scouts, basketball, tennis, gymnastics and Hebrew school my life is crazy. But with all this craziness, I have taught them the value of a dollar and hard work.

We definitely go out to dinner more often than I did as a child, but my kids know what they can order and what not to waste money on. They have also learned to save their money for things that are important to them instead of wasting it on nonessentials. These lessons obviously come from you. I know we tease you about your spending habits or should I say, lack of spending habits, but after working hard all your life I can appreciate your concerns and your life goals.

Because of your careful planning, you can relax a little and be proud of your accomplishments.

Nothing was given to you nor were things ever made easy for you. From a young age, you worked 6 to 7 days a week in Cuba. You then left Cuba as a newlywed and moved to Chicago. There you worked as a truck driver. You worked until you and mommy couldn’t take the cold. You then left Chicago and moved to Miami Beach. Here you owned a clothing store which was not very big in size.

Regardless of its size, you worked enough to pay for Linda, Nelson and myself to go to college and graduate school without student loans. A task today which seems impossible. You also bought us our first cars, gave us beautiful weddings, sweet 16’s and bar and bat mitzvahs. These are just a few things you did for us. I hope one day to do the same for my children with the examples you have given me.

I can go on and on describing what a wonderful father you are and continue to be, but this service must go on.

I just want to tell you again, how grateful I am for having you as my father and my friend. I love you with all my heart. Happy 70th birthday.

A los israelíes los acusan de tener pocos muertos y heridos en el enfrentamiento con los t e r r o r i s t a s d e H a m a s . Quienes así razonan suelen u t i l i z a r l a s p a l a b r a s "desproporción" o "asimetría" en un tono indignado. Mientras varios centenares de palestinos árabes han perecido o han resultado lesionados debido a los bombardeos, las bajas israelíes son apenas una docena. Los críticos de Tel Aviv -entre los que muchas veces se percibe un rancio tufo antisemita- no aclaran si Israel debe aumentar su cuota de cadáveres, o si debe reducir la de los árabes para encontrar una proporción razonable de sangre que satisfaga el curioso prurito equitativo que los embarga. Tampoco precisan el número moralmente aceptable de bajas permitidas para lograr que cese la lluvia de cohetes que desde hace años cae constantemente sobre las cabezas de los civiles israelíes.

E s t a d e m a n d a d e "proporcionalidad" no deja de ser sorprendente. Hasta el surgimiento de este conflicto los libros de historia nacional siempre habían mostrado una gran satisfacción y cierto orgullo chovinista cuando el ejército propio conseguía infligirle al enemigo un alto número de bajas frente al escaso precio pagado por "los nuestros". Israel es el único país del que se espera un comportamiento diferente y, en efecto, lo tiene: no conozco otra nación que avise dónde y cuándo va a bombardear para que los civiles evacuen el territorio. Conducta, por cierto, en la que también actúa asimétricamente, dado que los terroristas de Hamas, siempre empeñados en causar el mayor daño posible, nunca avisan cuándo o dónde van a lanzar sus cohetes contra las poblaciones civiles judías.

Israel, en cambio, no tiene el menor interés en causar víctimas. Todo lo que pretende es frenar los ataques de Hamas de la única manera que está a su alcance: eliminando a los terroristas y destruyendo los arsenales que poseen. No hay otra forma de enfrentarse a estos sujetos. Hamas no es una organización política con la que es factible llegar a acuerdos, sino una banda fanática decidida a erradicar del mapa a Israel, objetivo por el que sus miembros están dispuestos, incluso, a convertir a sus propios hijos en bombas humanas con el objeto de matar a los odiados judíos.

Esta es otra asimetría muy im por tan te . Los j ud íos construyen refugios bajo tierra en todas las casas cercanas a las fronteras, cierran las escuelas y esconden a los niños ante el menor peligro, viven como una tragedia nacional la muerte de un solo soldado, hacen todo lo posible por rescatar a sus prisioneros y protegen a la población civil de las consecuencias de la guerra. Las autoridades de Gaza, a contrario sensu, borrachas de violencia, disparan al aire i r r es pons a b l em en te s us ametralladoras para mostrar alegría o tristeza (provocando numerosos heridos), no vacilan en montar sus cuarteles u ocultar sus armas en escuelas, mezquitas y hospitales, utilizan escudos humanos para p ro tegers e , r ec ur ren a terroristas suicidas y premian con dinero a las familias de estos "mártires".

¿Por qué esa diferencia? Probablemente, por razones religiosas. La visión de la muerte y del dolor varía entre las diferentes culturas. En el mundo árabe, o por lo menos entre sus segmentos más fanáticos, la guerra contra el infiel es un deber, el martirologio es un honor y una

oportunidad para que los varones más agresivos y peleadores puedan ganarse un cielo muy peculiar lleno de sensualidad, vino y hermosas mujeres. De ahí el escaso valor que le conceden a la vida propia o a la ajena. Por eso no ponen el menor empeño en proteger a la sociedad de los rigores de la guerra, ni les importa el dolor que pueden causar cuando un terrorista se inmola dentro de un autobús escolar lleno de niños judíos.

Una semana antes de que Hamas renunciara a la tregua y arreciara los ataques con cohetes contra el Estado judío (la gota final que provocó el estallido del conflicto), me encontraba en Israel invitado a dar una conferencia en la Universidad de Tel Aviv. Como parte de los contactos que organizaron los anfitriones, visité el Wolfson Medical Center para conocer el programa "Salve el corazón de un niño". Quedé muy conmovido. Se trata de una fundación dedicada a operar del corazón a niños muy pobres, la mayor parte de ellos procedentes del mundo árabe. Casualmente, me tocó presenciar el arribo precipitado de una bebita de cinco días de nacida, pequeñita como un grano de arroz, a la que había que intervenir de urgencia para evitar que muriera. La acompañaban su madre, una señora enfundada en una burka negra que sólo dejaba ver sus ojos llorosos, y su marido, un hombrecito rústico, con barba, que miraba s o r p r e n d i d o e l t r a t o increíblemente afectuoso con que un grupo de médicos y enfermeras se ocupaba de la pequeña. Hace un tiempo escribí que el Estado de Israel quiso ser Atenas y lo obligan a portarse como Espar ta. Mantengo ese criterio.

Antes de la independencia israelí los judíos asumían que desde Sión se irradiaría paz, luz y saber. Estaba aún lejos la soberanía sobre el terruño ancestral, pero durante la refertilización, reconstrucción y reforestación que desencadenaron los pioneros en esa olvidada provincia del Imperio Otomano, también se establecieron instituciones académicas, científicas y artísticas. La lista de obras realizadas en pocas décadas es apabullante, porque inc luye teat ros , orquestas, institutos técnicos, una red de escue las , centros de investigación, la universidad de Jerusalén, conservatorios, el museo Bezalel, huertas, granjas y fábricas. Consolidaron una mentalidad vinculada al trabajo y la creación mediante la erección de ciudades grandes y pequeñas, kibutzim y moshavim, desarrollo vial, excavaciones arqueológicas.

No me gusta ser apologista, pero hay hechos demasiado evidentes que se tratan de negar falazmente. Como argentino, envidio a Israel. Y lo d igo, aunque suene a "políticamente incorrecto" en estos días de dolor, confusión y odio.

Israel fue uno de los hechos progresistas más notables del siglo XX. Extensiones desérticas se convirtieron en jardines. Fueron plantados bosques donde sólo había colinas peladas. Documentos del Foreing Office detallan las columnas de árabes provenientes de Egipto y Siria

que inmigraron a la entonces Palest ina bajo mandato británico para beneficiarse de la industriosidad sionista.

Pese a la ausencia de recursos naturales y la pobreza inicial, fue maciza la decisión de poner las bases de un Estado que fuese productivo, democrático, pluralista, con libertad de expresión, igualdad de la mujer y majestad de la justicia. Significaba una revolución en el Oriente Medio, que generó asombro y luego animosidad entre los sectores más q u ie t i s tas d e t o da l a región, incluidos los judíos ultra-ortodoxos que allí vivían desde hacía siglos. Por eso dirigentes regresivos como el Mufti de Jerusalén, viajaron a Ber l ín y Zagreb, para fotografiarse e inclinarse ante H i t le r y Ante Pave l ic , prometiéndoles liderar la "solución final" en Medio Oriente limpiándolo de judíos.

El renaciente Israel arraigaba en la tradición de los profetas, pero también en la herencia que provenía de Atenas. Ben Gurión fue un lector incansable de los clásicos griegos. La ciudad de Pericles era un modelo que se articulaba con la tradición bíblica y talmúdica. No obstante, pese a que se quería edificar algo semejante a la Atenas de Pericles, hubo que entrenarse para los combates, como los espartanos. Se debía lidiar con un océano hostil. Entonces surgieron personajes bravíos como Leónidas. Se formó un ejército estrictamente popular, donde cada ciudadano debía poner el pecho para defender a su familia. Si no se era también Esparta, no se podía sostener Atenas. Era -sigue siendo- una cruel paradoja.

La mentalidad de Esparta, sin embargo, jamás asfixió la de Atenas. Después de la

independencia (año 1948), pese al racionamiento por falta de víveres, y tener que recibir espectrales sobrevivientes del Holocausto -además de los 800 mil judíos expulsados de todos los países árabes como expresión de venganza por la derrota militar-, se fundaron más universidades, más teatros, más conservatorios, editoriales, periódicos, centros culturales, numerosos museos. Se realizaron descubrimientos de trascendencia en el campo de la biología, la agricultura, la genética, las comunicaciones, la química, la informática. Muchos israelíes recibieron reconocimientos internacionales, entre los cuales figuran varios premios Nobel.

En casi un siglo y medio de afiebrada actividad pionera, ese diminuto fragmento del globo terráqueo vibra con el espíritu de una resucitada y asombrosa Atenas, pese a que los vecinos y una parte enceguecida del mundo la quieren borrar del mapa y la obligan a portarse como Esparta.

García Granados, embajador guatemalteco ante la ONU durante la independencia de Israel, escr ib ió que la legitimidad de este país arraigaba en su extraordinaria potencialidad constructiva y la no tab le au todefensa d e s p l e g a d a p o r s u s ciudadanos. "Israel no fue un regalo, sino que ganó en buena ley su lugar entre las naciones". Su vocación no es la guerra, sino vivir en paz para seguir creando. Por eso, cuando Egipto aceptó la paz, Israel le devolvió hasta el último grano de arena del Sinaí, un territorio tres veces más grande que el suyo propio. 1. The flag of the United States of America, when it is displayed with another flag against a wall from crossed staffs, should be on the right, the flag's own right [that means the viewer's left --Webmaster], and its staff should be in front of the staff of the other flag.

2. The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. By "half-staff" is meant lowering the flag to one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff. Crepe streamers may be affixed to spear heads or flagstaffs in a parade only by order of the President of the United States.

3. That the flag, when carried in a procession with another flag, or flags, should be either on the marching right; that is, the flag's own right, or, if there is a line of other flags, in front of the center of that line.

4. The flag of the United States of America should be at the center and at the highest point of the group when a number of flags of States or localities or pennants of societies are grouped and displayed from staffs.

5. When the flag is displayed on a car, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender.

6. When hung in a window, place the blue union in the upper left, as viewed from the street.

The Fourth of July was traditionally celebrated as America's birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as 'Flag Birthday'. In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as 'Flag Birthday', or 'Flag Day'. Inspired by three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 - was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.
