From the PastorDear Friends,

Christmas in July? Well, not really. But there are some things we do in July to prepare for Christmas. One of these is thinking about the Giving Tree program, whereby parishioners purchase gifts and gift cards for those who otherwise won’t have much in terms of Christmas gifts. In the past, gifts have gone to those served by the PORT ministries and Casa Catalina, as well as to Veterans organizations. Th e past couple of years we have just put notices in the bulletin asking people to get gift cards that we then distributed to these organizations. I think it is worth trying to make this more meaningful and personal again. Th ose who organized the Giving Trees in the past have retired from this ministry, and so if we’re to do this I’ll need a few people to volunteer to take this on. We will do this at both of our sites, and the tags usually need to be put out in November with a later November or early December return date (so that the gifts can be sorted and arrive at the right places in time for Christmas). I would be happy if a small team of people came together to oversee this- so how about anyone interested letting me know. Once I have a sense of who can work with this, we’ll gather for a short meeting and then the group will be “off to the races.”

As usual, summer is fl ying by. Th e work on the Saint Gabriel bell tower continues, though it is slow. Th e fabrication of some of the bricks is taking a little longer than we thought it would. I guess it doesn’t really matter how long it takes, as long as it gets done… and as long as we get the rest of the money we need to pay for it. If you have not yet made a donation for this project, would you please consider doing so?

Th is week I met with an architect and contractor to continue conversation about getting elevator access to our Nativity of Our Lord church. I had said that once the bell tower project was underway, I would turn my attention to accessibility at Nativity. I expect I’ll have some information to share by September or so, as I would really like to gear up for a Fall campaign to raise what we need for that project so we can get that started.

May your week refl ect the encounter with Christ

we experienced at Mass today!
