URBAN HYBRIDIZATION

>> Edito.

Up to the beginning of the 20th Century, urban architecture focused on detail: window frames, textured gable tiles, finely crafted front doors, ironwork, basements… This decorative work was carried over into public spaces from street furniture (benches, bins, tree grates, underground station entrances…) to lighting poles. In my view, this diversity had and still has a double interest: it participates in the character of the place, forges its identity but also retains the attention of the passerby, calls out to them and breaks up the monotony of their wandering. In a word, this richness appropriately contributes to the attractiveness of a town. The minimalist tendency of the last decades has erased these asperities. In this circle of influence and under economic pressure, urban street furniture became uniform, with its most widespread monochrome color, the famous « Grey » irrespective of its geographical implantation. From Lille to Marseille via Helsinki, Casablanca or London, the support remains the same cylindrical-conical pole without identity... The time seems to have come to question this globalization in the precise field of public lighting.How do we give back depth, if needed, to these exterior objects? How do we propose decorative possibilities for pedestrians? How do we provide new services to users around this town network?What may the alternatives be that take into account the place, the project, the country without forgetting the current economic constraints? This is the first path we have chosen to offer you by developing this Urban Hybridization concept. We hope that it will find its own resonance at the center of your projects.

Concept //

Today lighting supports must no longer be considered as street furniture or equipment but as an element of the project, linked to a typology of lighting and an urban morphology.

It must now play a diurnal and nocturnal role, create luminous atmospheres, offer services to citizens and interact with its environment

In order to achieve this goal, we have conceived a range of decorative and/or functional objects designed to go with existing or new masts and allow in this way the qualification of public or private spaces.

Hybridization day & night //

It is to consider lighting supports differently and to reflect on the diurnal role that they can also play.

To do this, we propose to play with the diversity of materials, textures and colors to interact with natural or artificial light and the view that the user will have of their environment both at night and during the day.

This innovative approach takes into account their the solar orientation of the lighting support right from the design phase of the project.

Hybridization of colors and textures //

The combination and fitting of elements of different sizes, altimetry, materials and textures on a support provides an opportunity to « personalize » existing lighting poles or to differentiate one or several in a project.

The integration of these associations in an alignment of projected or existing lighting poles may create sequences and offer a rhythm and a signature to the considered urban space.

Hybridization of functions //

Elements of identification and ornament that make up this collection will permit new uses to passersby for the lighting poles by including functionality of service, comfort and luminous atmospheres...

Their regular positioning, their repetition, the neutrality of their shape and tone, participate in the trivialization of an installation.

The range of accessories has been reflected upon and designed to punctuate the space and break up this monotony.

The choice of objects, combinations, altimetry, textures and material must be coupled with sequencing work to define the musicality, the rhythm specific to each project...

Designed to be a punctuation element in the public space, this mask creates a diurnal and nocturnal atmosphere that qualifies the site.

Affixed on urban verticals, with a chosen rhythm and altimetry, this object redraws space by providing a new perception.

It may in this way offer a point of reference, identification or link between different urban developments.

the sculptural Mask //

This mask is designed like a decorative object with an external envelope that can be worked according to wishes to respond to the spirit of the site.This texture and surface work offers numerous interpretations. During the day, they vary according to the weather and the time of the day while at night, the artificial light reveals a more static game of shadows and lights.

According to the rhythm of its use in space, the choice of dimensions, this mask qualifies a place, draws an itinerary or creates an urban link.

The external envelope of this mask can be dressed with texts, photographs, drawings or graphics.It can be used to identify an itinerary or raise awareness of a detail in the urban development.At night, an optional lighting system makes it possible to continue reading while wandering along the itinerary.

the Plug //

A USB plug can be added to the lower part of the mask. This function is recognizable by affixing an international iconography on the mask.

It enables the user who is low on battery to connect their device (telephone, smartphone, tablet, computer).

This service can be coupled with seating to offer more comfort to the user.

the Lamp //

This relay light may be scattered over the area.It offers a contemporary version of a storm lantern that in olden times accompanied walkers during their wandering.

Its white opalized, central cylinder, lit at night, naturally creates a contrast with the crafted exterior cladding.This way of reading the object becomes recognizable at night and day. It offers in this way a unique signature to an itinerary, a square, a quarter...

the Lamp Shade //

This envelope dresses the projectors to transform a technical design into a more domestic style for the object at scale with the user.

In this version, the underside of this lamp shade is closed by an open worked disc which can be personalized.In the range, the object without the disc offers a possible treatment difference between the interior and the exterior of the lamp shade providing the site with a completely different atmosphere.In this case, its installation in the space according to a chosen rhythm will qualify the site.

The minimalist size of this seating facilitates their installation in shopping streets or avenues or places with a high frequentation such as around schools where waiting is often solitary, occasional and temporary.

Their open worked design pursues a work on shadows and light, natural and artificial. It enables the qualification of projects and offers a new punctuation in the lower part of the mast.

This Stool is particularly intended for short waiting time and places with little installation space available.

A lower version of the first Stool developed in the same philosophy. The patterns on the seating are made to measure to respond to the specificities of the project and provide their own light play.It participates in this way to the personalization of the treated spaces.

Priority should be given to this model when the waiting time is slightly longer, when more comfort is required or where more space is available.

the Adornments //

This first series of decorative accessories has been imagined to play with natural and artificial light by reflection or refraction of light or simply by contrast of shades or materials.Their use enables the passerby’s attention to be captured and break the monotony imposed by the regular spacing of the lighting poles.

Their delicacy, their positioning in space, the variation of their altimetry, the rhythm of the installation, provides a more playful even dreamlike dimension to the public space.

the Filters //

These accessories offer the possibility of creating temporary displays. During the day, the effect evolves with the weather, time, seasons. The unpredictable character of this event breaks up habits and provides changing decorative possibilities.At night, with the help of the artificial lighting, it offers another more static setting. The work using dichroic glasses provides colored effects. The open worked discs provided a set of graphic shadows.These two alternatives will bring the site to life in different ways.

This lighting column takes its esthetical inspiration from lounge lighting, while offering the efficiency of a lighting pole, necessary for the lighting of pedestrian spaces.

Its upper part is designed like an envelope that may be dressed on the inside with different elements or materials in harmony with the identity of the development project.

A monolithic sculptural support offering the possibility of personalizing its style and responding to local architecture or imposing itself with a singular design.

Two nocturnal lighting options are available to reveal the graphics work.

>> At night, backlighting of the column will reinforce by contrast the perception with of the motifs of this vertical. An additional dynamic scenario may be worked on by the design teams to bring the site to life and complete the occupation of the space.>> Up lighting from the interior will reveal the transparence of the vertical structure and project effects on the ground.In this configuration, depending on the environment, natural light may also create moving shadows.
