Tufts Professor Amos Emerson DolbearInvented the Telephone at Ballou Hall

1864: Dolbear invented a “talking machine” identical to Bell’s original electromagnetic receiver and transmitter – a sound-powered telephone. If Dolbear had patented his device, Alexander Graham Bell would never have been heard of.1

1874: The first phone call was made by Tufts professor, Amos Dolbear, from Ballou Hall. Dolbear already had a working telephone when he became a professor in 1874. It connected his lab in Ballou to his home on Professors Row and allowed him to alert Mrs. Dolbear when he was on his way home for lunch.2

But someone beat him to the patent office...

Permanent Magnet Receiver

Even though Bell was making substantial progress, Dolbear believed he was about to cash in. “Let us make some money,” his friend Percival Richards told him. But Dolbear’s aspirations for short-term gains were dashed. In the first week of January 1877, he learned that Bell had constructed a telephone device employing roughly the same technology Dolbear had used—and Dolbear was led to believe that Bell had already patented it.  When Dolbear later found out that Bell didn’t apply for his patent until January 15, 1877, he suspected foul play. “I suppose that I shall lose both the honor and the profit of the invention,” he fretted.3
